19th Century Vampire Lit I'm Gonna Read
Because I've lost my mind.
Most of these texts were found with the aid of these two posts. I did not include any of the stories listed as "not technically about vampires," except for "Let Loose," because it concerns a specter seeking blood, and "Vampirismus," because it's called "Vampirismus."
A strikethrough indicates that I've already read the work. Bold text indicates that I cannot find an English translation, whether online or for purchase. If you know of English translations of any bolded titles, please let me know.

The Blood of the Vampire, Florence Marryat (1897)
*"Dracula's Guest" was first published in 1914 but was written either concurrent to or before the writing of Dracula.
I'm going to be honest. When I began, I thought there were four nineteenth century vampire stories. Five if you count Dracula's Guest. I've made a huge mistake.

François Truffaut and Alfred Hitchcock in Hitchcock/Truffaut (Kent Jones, 2015)
Cast: Alfred Hitchcock, François Truffaut, Bob Balaban (voice), Wes Anderson, Olivier Assayas, Peter Bogdanovich, Arnaud Desplechin, David Fincher, James Gray, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Richard Linklater, Paul Schrader, Martin Scorsese. Screenplay: Kent Jones, Serge Toubiana. Cinematography: Nick Bentgen, Daniel Cowen, Eric Gautier, Mihai Malaimare Jr., Lisa Rinzler, Genta Tamaki. Film editing: Rachel Reichman. Music: Jeremiah Bornfield.
I urge anyone who's interested in movies, and not just interested in Alfred Hitchcock or François Truffaut, to see the terrific documentary Hitchcock/Truffaut, beautifully put together by Kent Jones and Serge Toubiana. Although the focus is on Hitchcock, and to a lesser extent on Truffaut, the film constitutes an invaluable lesson on how to make a movie, particularly what a director does to grab hold of viewers and manipulate their thoughts and emotions. Hitchcock's techniques were unique, of course, derived from his own interests and obsessions as well as from his experience as someone who began his career directing silent movies, which taught him how to tell a story through images. But the comments in the film by contemporary filmmakers like Wes Anderson, David Fincher, and Richard Linklater on Hitchcock's techniques, particularly Martin Scorsese's analysis of Vertigo (Hitchcock, 1958), open a new perspective on their own works.

For the native country asks: 11, 12, 22~
(Thank you for providing me for a quick break in between essay writing! Love you)
11. favourite native writer/poet?
Oh boy. Do you have 4 hours? My favourite poem is "Il pleure dans mon cœur/ Comme il pleut sur la ville", but I appreciate more Paul Eluard's poems ("Sur mes refuges détruits / Sur mes phares écroulés / Sur les murs de mon ennui / J’écris ton nom / [...] Liberté").
In terms of narrative/prose writers... Oof. I have a BA in French Literature, AND I've been living mostly in libraries and bookshops since I was 5. So, um. I love French literature. The master writer of French kids of the 2000s is the regretted Pierre Bottero with his series "Ewilan" (a must read). Lately, as I am deep in essay writing about culture and stuff, I've been reading some Malraux, especially his 1966 speech that you can find here and that is absolutely amazing. Big fan of Alexandre Dumas and Théophile Gautier in the 19th century, Fred Vargas and Nancy Huston in the 21st, Eric Orsenna and Eric-Emmanuel Schmidt in the 20th... Don't have time to go in-depth too much right now, but anyone, do feel free to send me asks about French literature!
12. what do you think about English translations of your favourite native prose/poem?
Ooooh, bad, bad. I generally prefer original versions of what I'm reading, and if I don't know the language, I'm very careful to look up what bilingual people say about the translation. Some time ago, in one of my literature class, we were talking about a French text, I don't remember which one, and the prof showed us the original text and then a translation (in Spanish), and oooow, the translation completely lost the point of the text, none of the lyricality of it had been transposed. (I am a snob when it comes to languages and literatures, I am well aware of that) Other than that, I don't read translated French writings in English, so I don't have anything else to say.
22. what makes you proud about your country? what makes you ashamed?
*snorts in French* Let's start with ashamed because oh boy have you been following French news lately? Macron is an asshole, the gouvernement is full of idiots, thieves, criminals and racist pieces of shits, society still has a problem with its colonial past (hello racism, hello xenophobia), and it's paradoxically very proud of its culture while being almost illiterate, the pretentiousness of French people, the hypocrisy...
But it's also a beautiful country that has made and still makes amazing creations, has a long history of humanism and intellectualism, a history of hospitality and fiery defence of its people and its values (without any irony and knowing well how horrible it was, I would have loved to live through the Révolution in 1789). Good food, good bread, good pâtisserie. Excellent literature and music. Beautiful landscapes. I hate France as much as I love it, but I would not go back to live there even if you pay me.
Send me another not-US ask and I'll do the Moroccan version!
#replies#skater110599#native country asks#rapha talks#about france#i am such a snob in these answers i'm sorry it's this art critique dossier i'm writing it's corrupting my brain#send me asks and i'll do morocco next#thanks for dropping by!#love you lots tammy

(...)". Read the full article

Death and Burial: Vampires and Werewolves - Emily Gerard
And the Creature Came In - Augustus Hare
The Tomb of Sarah - F.G. Loring
And then there is this book which I don't even know if I can read, because I've yet to find an English translation and don't know if it even has one:
Der Vampyr – Novelle aus Bulgarien - Hans Wachenhusen
Are there any others I'm missing? Are any of those not actually vampire stories or not from the nineteenth century and I've been misled?
As to why the nineteenth century: I think if I tried to read all vampire stories EVER it would take the entire rest of my life and then some, and also early vampires are fascinating to me because all the standard tropes were not yet in effect.
As to why I'm doing this at all: Who even knows. I need things to distract my brain.

CLOSED! Preliminary Hot Vintage TV Men List
Alright folks! We have one week left on submissions for the Hot Vintage TV Men's Bracket! As promised here is a list of all the Hot Vintage TV Men who have been submitted and passed our preliminary eligibility checks. There are a handful of guys on this list and one or two not on it that we are currently still debating on so reminder that this list is not final and subject to change.
Currently we have 231 Hot Vintage TV Men!
Also in advance of the competition I'd like to remind anyone submitting propaganda for someone that starred in a show that aired only partially during our timeframe or was under 18 for a part of a shows filming, to please make sure you are only submitting propaganda that is from within our timeframe and when the actor was 18 years or older. This is also just good to keep in mind in general as several people submitted actors for shows that aren't eligible for our tournament either because it was outside our time period or in one case the actor was underaged for the entirety of the show (though many were eligible for other shows they were submitted for). We do our best to screen for these things but sometimes it's hard to tell or it’s a show we don't personally know well enough so we appreciate help from y'all letting us know if you do catch anything.

Jacques LE NY
