I love the fact that Sam asked how tf cas got the colt, and dean was like 🫣 it.. it was under my pillow. 😔 he came into my room and he played me 😥 and Sam DOESN'T EVEN QUESTION THAT?? Directors
I think that it could be at least funny considering garvez in the episodes directed by cast members.
Adam Rodriguez
He directed three episodes: 13x16, 14x8, 16x4. In the first, Last Gasp, we have to say that we don't have a lot of garvez... but we have a lot of Penelope screen time. And it's interesting to consider exactly this: the way Adam conceives PG. The dresses she wears, beige! Her shoes... At the end, we have a little garvez moment, when Penelope asks Luke if he can help her with her box. We also see Luke staring Pen, so happy that he claps his hands.
In the second, Ashley, we have a lot of garvez moment, because Luke can't go on the field. Emily tells him that he has to work with PG, then the named arrives, but her focus is on Rossi. Luke says that they will be lab partners, with a love gaze. But she replies in a harsh way and runs away. Then, we see them working together at the case. He is about to answer, but Garcia interrupts him and says that she is saying the same as Luke, but with more chutzpah, wit, and eloquence. He smirks. Then, almost at the end, they have a great idea to solve the case. After it, they set the brief room, Luke says that they are a dynamic duo, but she refuses to hit his hand, and replies that they will never be a duo, plus, he didn't help, he must force her to weire beige, deny all unicorns things... to make her admit that. Then, she gets a text and asks his help. At the end, we discover that it was for prepare the engagement party for Rossi and Krystall. Luke starest her almost all the time, waiting, asking, begging for get a hug from her. She allows him, and he kisses her cheek first. Rossi pats his back. He brushes her arm, when they detach. It's interesting that in S14 the relationship between them is friendlier, but in this ep, directed by Adam, we see the queen of ice again. Maybe because he character loves to be teased by her?
In the third, Pay-per-View, they work together. Luke reaches her in her office. She says that she has to ask him something; he replies that if is to babysitting Sergio again, he needs med for his allergies. She thanks him in her way and he smirks. Penelope is digging in Tyler Green life and has found that he was the last who saw his sister. She shows her idea to Luke, asking his opinion. He replies that it's a great idea. She seems surprised and says that rumors say he was difficult to work with... but she start them. He smirks again, then tells her that she should talk with Emily after the brief. But she refuses it, saying that he should do it, because it involves him. They argue until they reach the team. But start again when the discussion is over. Emily is confused by their behave. Luke introduces PG idea, then she finally is able again to talk. He still shows his support for her, and gives her a little shot when Prentiss says that it's a great idea. But she is worried that she can talk with Tyler, after the last time. Luke replies at her place, that the answer is yes, but Pen says that she is not sure. Then we see Penelope and Emily watch Luke making the cognitive interview. Green asks, in a rude and desperate way, to never say her (Penelope) again. Luke turns around and looks at the girls, probably especially at Pen.
Joe Mantegna
He directed six episodes with garvez: 12x7, 12x19, 13x9, 13x18, 14x6, 16x3. In the first, Mirror Image, we have an important moment for them, even if it seems just funny. Penelope is worried for Tara, but discovers that it's just an experiment (and a bet), to see how much she can keep a confidence. Luke says that he bets her for 6. She, really angry and disappointed, leaves the room saying that they all suck, especially the Newbie. Luke seems not so happy. Then we see them working close, with the rest of the team, on the case.
The second, True North, has just them interacting for the case.
It's the same for the third, False Flag. Luke asks twice for information; that's all.
The fourt, The Dance of Love, is Rossi centric, with also Krystall. We don't see them interact, they are in the same room only during the brief. To be honest, we see Luke picking up Garcia calling, but not her, zero frame.
It's a totally different thing for the fifth, Luke. We see Luke so annoyed when Phil, his best friend, asks about her, because he wants to try with the blonde. Then, when Alvez reaches the BAU, he meets Penelope, who wants to know all about the big moving. She is really happy for him and Lisa. But, the most important thing is that Luke lies to her, when she asks if Phil asked about her. Then, the latter says JJ to tell Garcia he says hi, and Luke seems not happy again. PG and Luke interact a lot in this episode, even if just for work. He then refuses her support, just asking her to keep Lou for a while, after Phil death. Garcia is not happy to dig in Luke private life, she is so worried for him.
In the sixth, Moose, we have just little shades, because Luke can't behave when Penelope is around. She makes a joke, she speaks, she tries whatever... he smirks.
A. J. Cook
She directed two episodes with garvez: 14x13 and 16x8. The first, Chameleon, is a Rossi centric episode. We still have a little moment, that has zero sense for the plot. Rossi, in a no-good shape, arrives at the BAU, and meets Penelope and Luke, that are talking, close. They also exchange a gaze, when he leaves. Then they talk once during the brief.
The second, Forget Me Knots, has an interesting garvez scene. Penelope reaches Luke and Tara, that are talking about the case. He asks her if that is all she could find; she calls him sir, and replies that will keep search. But, wait. Garcia doesn't treat bad Luke, so he asks directly her where is the snark. He expected it. She replies that he is funny and to be less hard on himself, then leaves. Luke, shocked, says to Tara "She is getting some", and the woman agrees. The three interact again, just for work, two times, during the episode. Considering that JJ is the number one fan of garvez, maybe I expect more by her actress.
Aisha Tyler
She directed three episodes: 13x6, 14x9, 16x7. In the first, The Bunker, we have some shades. Garcia and JJ are looking for a new apartment for the IT; then Matt, Spencer and Luke arrive in different moment. Alvez asks her if her cat has things, she replies yes, then, when he declares that he is all for living only with the things you really need (looking at her), she agrees, but nobody believes her. They interact again almost at the end, when the team discuss about surviver life style. Then, again, at the end, when they come back.
The second, Broken Wings, is a Tara episode. It's not so amazing then that they interact only one time, about the case, in the middle of the episode.
The third, What Doesn't Kill Us, is the most interesting for garvez content. Even if Penelope and Luke don't interact, it's still important for the plot (sigh), because at the end of the episode we have a kiss between Tyler and Garcia, and, after the credits, even worst. But this will have consequences, during the series, that will involve garvez.
Matthew Gray Gubler
He directed three episodes with garvez: 12x6, 13x17, 14x5. Only in the first, Elliot's pond, we have some little shades. But I'm not totally sure that is because of MGG, and not Adam, who couldn't hold his crush on PG character. When they discover what happened to Hotch, Luke and Penelope are close (really close, their bodies touch each other). At the time that Garcia is about to crying, his gaze is magnetized by her. Then, on the jet, we have two other shades: her "my brain's a little lunky" joke, and "Bones cool name ever". At the end of the ep, when the team is celebrating Emily new unit chief, they are close (and we can guess with their arms around shoulders).
In the second, The Capilanos, they don't interact, and not even talk about the case; it's a waste, if you remember that Penelope is scared by clown. In the third, The Tall Man, we have just a neutral interaction, during the brief; it's not so weird, considering that is a JJ episode.

i agree with you completely about berens, but can you expand on any specifics about how he fails to grasp dean?
Gladly.
Generally, Berens writes Dean as meaner, angrier, and/or more resentful than a lot of writers. His characterization of Dean calls to mind this post, where Dean’s feelings and actions aren’t totally out of bounds or ooc yet are just different enough to feel off to me. One example would be 12x19, where Dean is dismissive and rude when Cas finally returns, berating him for not responding to his and Sam’s phone calls before stomping off, continues to be a bit standoffish when Cas tries to talk with him, and then after Cas steals the Colt and leaves, says they should “kick his feathered ass” and then literally does get physical with Cas when they find him, slamming him up against the hotel room wall. Dean can be angry and lash out like he does here, but in this ep it feels excessive and off-putting. If Dean was rude to Cas at the beginning but then cooled down, or he was nicer at the beginning and then lashed out at Cas in the hotel room, those situations might work for me; it’s that Dean’s low-level pissed for most of the ep and this being his entire emotional range that feels frustrating. I do think Jensen softens Dean with his acting in this ep, and Berens’s tries to soften Dean in the writing by presenting his anger as an expression of him being worried, but Dean comes across like an angry jerk more than anything else.
Another moment of Dean being very angry and resentful would be the final scene in 13x03, when he and Sam talk about Jack. I’m not super Destiel inclined, but I can see why people would want to read Dean as in love with Cas here. If Dean is in love with Cas, his intense anger and resentment is still a lot, but it’s easier to take if it stems from Dean seeing the man he loves die in front of him. If Dean isn’t in love with Cas, then Dean becomes a super angry and resentful guy who unfairly blames Jack for Mary and Cas’s deaths, and isn’t able to rightly blame the guy responsible, Lucifer. Dean being angry and even resentful isn’t out of bounds character-wise, and he is grieving Mary and Cas (in whatever way one reads it), but again the writing feels… excessive, oversized, to me. Maybe that there’s nothing on Sam’s end to counter-balance it? Dean is the angry/resentful one and Sam is the forgiving/accepting one, in a way that seems to simplify the emotional range for both of these characters. (There's also how this conversation somewhat reframes season 4/5, which I think contributes to why Sam & Dean are being characterized as they are, but I'm still mulling this over.)
I also really struggle with how Berens frames (and seems to understand) Dean’s childhood and his emotional issues stemming from it. 12x14 comes to mind, in how he writes the Mary – Dean emotional conflict. There’s this exchange at the beginning of the ep:
MARY: I'm doing this for you. I'm playing three decades of catch up here. DEAN: And we're not? How do you think this has been for us? We're your sons, and you've been gone. Our whole lives, you've been gone. You said that you needed time. No, you said you need space. So we gave you your space. But you didn't need just space. No, you needed space from us. MARY: That's not true. Dean, I'm trying – DEAN: How 'bout for once, you just try to be a mom? MARY: I am your mother, but I am not "just a mom." And you are not a child. DEAN: I never was. So between us and them – MARY: It's not like that. DEAN: Yeah, Mary, it is. And you made your choice. So there's the door.
And then this one at the end of the ep:
DEAN: [to MARY] When I thought something might've happened to you, nothing else mattered. MARY: Dean, the things I said – DEAN: No, Mom, you were... It's not your job to make my lunch and kiss me good night. It's – We're adults. You're gonna make your own choices, even if I don't like 'em. Even if I really, really don't like 'em. That's just something I'm gonna have to get used to. Okay, Mom? MARY: [ Whispers ] Yeah.
I’d heard through the fandom grapevine that Berens didn’t write Dean saying “[he] was never a child” and this was Jensen’s adlib, which seems to be true (it's not in the Production Draft). Surprisingly, I’m going to say something nice about season 7 here, and it’s that Glass got it in 7x04, when he writes Dean saying: “You and Sam. I just – you know, hunters are never kids. I never was. I didn't even stop to think about it.” Dean not being a kid (while being a kid!!) is the keystone to understanding his childhood, and the tragedy of Dean being forced to take on adult responsibilities and emotionally support John when he was too young. To have a character with that backstory tell his actual mom, in what’s framed as him opening up in a mature way, that it’s not her job to be his mom anymore is… a kind of stomach churning writing choice, imo, even if I do believe Mary’s obligations to Sam and Dean post-resurrection are a complicated question. All of this leads me to think Berens does not fully grasp Dean’s parentification and what it means for him as a character, which is a major reason why his emotional arcs for Dean don't work for me.

My thoughts as I’m watching 24 seasons of law & order svu:
Season 12
I needed a bit of a break after binging 11 seasons. So, back to this. 12x01, dude seriously asking Stabler if Benson is single. As if Stabler actually would give him the go ahead. Bailee’s apology was really heartfelt there… what I really want to know, is what happened with Bailee’s character after this episode. Did she stay? Was she ever happy? Guess we’ll never know…
12x02, I want to know how they got the kid to talk. Benson and Stabler walking away from Henry Ian Cusick, rolling their eyes, is one of my new favorites. There was no need for the two of them to be that close together after they cleared all the perps, but I appreciate that they are. Well, Henry being the good guy was too good to be true. So we have both of Kabby being rapists on SVU.
12x03, Stabler calling out the perp for not washing his hands after using the urinal is a small but important thing for me. Not sure how I feel about the stalking of the perp. So did this episode inspire Mariska to talk about the backlog issue, or was it the other way around? Yay on judge Donnelly being back.
12x04, I always like a good excuse for TV shows having to change up sets, so bursting pipes are fun. Stabler looks so happy when he gets to be a special debuty U.S. Marshal. Finally got to the scene with Benson pointing her gun out of the moving car and Stabler pulling her back in. How did they get their badges back? They left it at the U.S. Attorney’s office…
12x05, I like the characters grappling with the new set. Also, Munch in a uniform is fine. Olivia on shrooms is great! First Stabler saves Benson's hair from being cut, and then he catches her when she faints, go Stabler! And yet again, no Stabler at Liv's bedside in the hospital. Stabler pretending to be high makes the whole episode even greater.
12x07, Benson and Stabler just ignoring Cragen's order to see Huang as always, until they eventually cave. I liked Stabler talking Benson down, when she thought Bello’s character was her half-sister. Entrance of Clavin.
12x08, well, that beginning was eerie. Dana is back, that’s not gonna end well for Stabler. And he got shot. Actually the first time this season he got injured. At least Benson is there to make him feel better. Poor Dana, that court scene was really well acted.
12x09, Paxton is back! Did not expect Paxton to be in the bed, assumed it would be Benson, this makes it better. Stabler looks so smug when Fin is talking about the penis pump. Stabler is terrible to Paxton in this ep.
12x10, the ADA was right, saying that partners can be closer than married couples. Bello is back. Love that Stabler would have backed Olivia up, if she went against her obligation in order to keep Calvin. The last scene started cute with Benson, Stabler and Calvin. Elliot trying to hold Olivia back and Calvin being taken away was sad though.
12x11, Tucker has it out for Stabler again. Sometimes Benson is not a good influence on Stabler.
12x13, Stabler going UC as sex addict, that’s all. Stabler never even denied that Olivia was his girlfriend, just saying. And he only got slightly injured here.
12x15, Munch and Fin eavesdropping with the spy tech is actually funny. And then Liv uses it. Elliot making fun of the perp is quite enjoyable.
12x17, Paxton was killed. At least we got a Stabler/Benson hug out of it.
12x19, Benson and Stabler undercover as a married couple, doesn't get much better than that.
12x21, Casey is back, literally out of nowhere.
12x22, John Stamos as Ken is just creepy. Props though, for accusing Elliot of wanting to get Olivia pregnant. Just logistically, how can he afford child care for 47 kids?!? Domestic Benson and Stabler with the dinner scene was cute.
12x23, poor Elliot. Here comes Tucker… communication in the Stabler marriage seems to be working.
12x24, loved the last shot of Elliot and Olivia looking at each other, whilst everyone else hustled. Absolutely hate, that it’s gonna take another 10 seasons until Stabler comes back.

AND YET-- the script takes a different tact:#its still DEAN but its another way to go about things: he Wants Cas to go with him. his bedroom is too intimate but he wants Cas to be near.#its just setting up another instance of time spent together OFF SCREEN. its canon but its open to our imaginations.
