Blog 1: Talks and Tales with CMU Students

Experience

Walking around the Central Mindanao University campus in high heels is a feat in its own right! Symbolic, if I do say so myself. I felt like a woman on a mission to conquer the world. Jokes aside, perhaps one of the most unforgettable parts of the experience, when we roamed around to interview students to find out their ails and pains, was the exhilarating feeling of approaching strangers. As someone who loves to talk a lot, I have a strange aversion to talking to people I do not know. This activity was something entirely new to me, enabling me to go beyond what is comfortable and explore further into unventured places.

Our group decided to go in pairs to interview the students, assigning each pair to reach 15 respondents or above.

College of Veterinary Medicine

The first students we interviewed were from the College of Veterinary Medicine. One of them shared his problems with the lack of internet access and service throughout the campus and expressed enthusiasm to subscribe to services that would solve the problem. He also added that he experienced problems with excessive heat inside their classrooms due to poor ventilation and the lack of fans and air-conditioners; the other student shared problems about single-use plastics and suggested biodegradable packaging alternatives.

College of Business and Management

Three students from the College of Business and Management shared three different problems they observed: the first one talked about the poor ventilation in their classrooms, making their classes uncomfortable due to excessive heat; the second one pointed out the lack of healthy food sold in canteens and suggested the selling of homemade healthy products as solutions; and last one expressed problems with waste management.

College of Engineering

In the College of Engineering, we interviewed five students who also offered four different insights: the first one talked about the lack of proper waste management and disposal, the second one expressed his dissatisfaction with lack of equipment in their college laboratory, the third student elaborated on the lack of proper garbage disposal observable around the campus and suggested the addition of more trashcans to solve the problem; the last two engineering students, on the other hand, talked about the problems with single-use-plastic that constitute most of the waste generated around the campus and suggested a solution to solve the problem in the form of making alternatives that are more environmentally friendly.

College of Forestry and Environmental Science

Lastly, we interviewed four students from the College of Forestry and Environmental Science. Two of the four students stated that one of the major problems in the campus relates to waste disposal and management, while the other three expressed their problems with transportation, expressing their desire to have the habal-habal drivers back in operation.

Reflection

Different students really do have different perspectives based on how they live their lives. This perspective may alter the way they view the world, and as a result, they may see things differently from the others. One issue may hold more weight for one student than the other—it all depends on how much they think these issues will affect them. Upon approaching different students from different colleges, I was able to connect to a lot of people despite the short time we spent talking. I had the chance to have a glance at their thoughts and found out the various problems that could be transformed into opportunities to make profitable solutions.

Learnings

The total interviews conducted by all members in our group is 55, featuring fourteen classifications of problems they encountered in the university. The most prevalent appear to be waste problems, which was the answer of 28 students and constitutes 53.8% out of the total. The second in rank are the transportation problems as mentioned by 7 students and constitutes 13.5% out of the total. It is followed by ventilation problems (9.6%); printing, insufficiency of educational tools, internet problems, and security problems which each constitutes 3.8%. Ranking the lowest are the problems only experienced by one respondent out of the 55. The aforementioned problems are: mental health problems, illegal businesses, lack of healthy food options in canteens, difficulties in student schedule tracking, lack of water fountains, and the low visibility of the grey road humps (1.9% each).

As evident above, since waste problems rank the highest out of all 55 responses, the solutions with the highest probable marketability are those that address problems with waste management, segregation, and production. This opens opportunities to recycle materials that are in excess and are common pollutants to create products that would transform these trash to treasures.

Throughout the multiple meetings we had as a class in our entrepreneurial mind course, one of the most important learnings I had was to take risks. But, these risks must be backed with facts and figures--numbers and analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats around one's desired home for a new business. Interviewing a lot of students opened my eyes to all the possibilities out there. Opportunities are everywhere, we just have to learn how to look the right way.

Throughout my two years in college, I was frequently asked, "what makes studying business interesting?". Well, I myself have also asked that question before and I honestly, at first, couldn't find the right words to answer it. So as a business student, studying business is interesting because business education is not confined to textbooks only but extends to practical experiences that have real impact. That is why I am really happy that courses like Entrepreneurial mind is offered not just to business students but to other students as well, because it is a great way to train and produce young entrepreneurs which could be potentially the future of our economy. And I am much more happy that I had the opportunity to also take this course.

So on the first day of our Entrepreneurship class, I learned that, understanding entrepreneurship requires not just exploring it from an academic perspective but also how it works in the world outside the four walls of the classroom. I believe that the true entrepreneurial learning happens when we step outside the four walled room and apply what we learned there in the real-life setting.

I also learned is that Entrepreneurship is more than just starting a business, it is an innovative journey, where people can go beyond what their mind thinks and imagine and turning these imaginations into reality thereby opening realms of opportunities which can lead not just to personal growth but also giving impact to the society as a whole. And lastly, it was made clear to me and to the class that our journey with this course will be more that just an academic endeavor. It was an invitation to transform our thinking, to constantly be curious, to challenge our limits, and to unlock our potential as future business leaders and innovators. The Entrepreneurial Mind Journey

The journey sometimes felt like a slow walk on silver pavements. Sometimes it felt like a breath-stealing sprint that never let me have a break to see how far I've gone. In simpler words, the whole experience in this subject felt like a whirlwind of good and nerve-wracking emotions.

The first day of our class for the Entrepreneurial Mind subject was a nostalgic experience. It was like returning to a home I used to live in, bringing both warm and melancholic feelings about my past and the future I never pursued. I didn't feel regretful of leaving the College of Business and Management. It made me realize how people can be happy in different places for different reasons. How flowers can flourish in different environments. The discussions and activities in the subject were both familiar and strange. Some of the discussions were topics I already learned in the past, but the performance tasks were completely out of what I was used to.

Pitching Experience

The final pitching was bombarded with unexpected occurrences. We all had designated tasks divided according to our skills and fortes. I was assigned to the financial planning, but two hours before the pitching, we had to change the presenter because the one originally chosen by the group fell ill and was rendered unable to present. My groupmates encouraged me to take up the challenge, and so, with less than an hour of practice, I had to brave my way through the experience and give my best for the group.

We brought the prototype of the product we created: crafting paper out of mahogany leaves. In the Philippines, where mahogany poses a threat to biodiversity as a non-native species, we saw an opportunity to turn a challenge into a triumph. By harnessing these overlooked leaves abundant on our university grounds, we unveil a marvel: crafting paper of unparalleled quality and conscience. With each sheet, we rewrite the narrative of paper production. Gone are the days of ecological compromise. In its place stands a sustainable alternative, born from the resilience of nature herself.

One of the highlights of my experience in this subject was the creation of our promotional video. I was able to take a breath from writing a mountain of papers for political science and was able to act as a Barbie with a purpose. I had fun acting in the video and at the same time raising awareness about mahogany leaves and environmental preservation.

Lecture Series

The culmination of our journey with the subject was the Entrepreneurial Mind Lecture Series Program 2024 which featured a stellar lineup of speakers with a wide range of expertise in related but distinct fields discussing an abundance of topics. With the lecture series, I now have a better understanding of startups and businesses. The topic of conversation included how businesses grow quickly at first and eventually settle into a fairly stable state. Furthermore, not everyone who begins to sell products is launching a new business. The start of an entrepreneurial endeavor is associated with the term startup. It goes hand in hand with presenting something fresh and inventive. One of the most intriguing things I also discovered is that you cannot sue someone for allegedly stealing their inventions.

Parting Words

As this chapter ends, one of its greatest impacts is that it strengthened my bond with my friends. We were able to work together to accomplish great things. We learned, we laughed, and we improved together. We enjoyed the journey, and are now ready to move forward.

Entrepre-NEER-ship: The Interview

On our second week, we were tasked to interview at least 50 individuals. We were to ask them what they need and how they want it to be. Our group consist of 6 members and so we tried to interview 10 people each. I interviewed 10 random people (students, faculty & staff of CMU) about our business venture which is a workstation in CMU. I won't be naming the people I have interviewed but here's a recap of there answers:

Person 1 would like a work station that is open 24/7 especially during examinations and has basic necessities such as food, water and good internet connectivity.

Person 2 emphasized the necessity of a versatile work station that could accommodate a meeting.

Person 3 stressed the significance of a quiet and distraction-free environment in a work station to enhance productivity and focus.

Person 4 shared her desire for a work station that integrates seamlessly with existing office infrastructure, facilitating efficient workflow management.

Person 5 emphasized the importance of a work station design that can be easily customized to individual preferences and tasks.

Person 6 emphasized the importance of aesthetics in a work station, advocating for a sleek and modern design that inspires creativity.

Person 7 emphasized the importance of durability and easy maintenance in a work station to ensure longevity and cost-effectiveness.

Person 8 expressed excitement about a potential work station, highlighting the importance of ergonomic design for long coding sessions.

Person 9 emphasized the importance of cost-effectiveness and scalability in a work station solution to accommodate varying budgets and needs.

Person 10 emphasized the need for a work station that maximizes space efficiency.

During our interview, I have learned that each person’s ideal workstation may vary, so a balance of these features can create an inclusive and functional environment. Interviewing people to gather their opinions imparts valuable moral lessons. Empathy and respect are crucial. Treat interviewees with empathy, understanding their perspectives even if they differ from your own. Respect their time and willingness to share their opinions. Active listening is equally important—truly hear what they say, validate their experiences, and learn from their insights.
