in the context of other poliziotteschi flicks thinking back on la polizia ringrazia just makes my head spin like there you have the "good" policeman realizes the system is corrupt archetype and all the other routine components to it but this movie just takes that and gives depth to them and makes every character's motivations very ambigous and layered. it really feels like reading an essay, you have to really pay attention to understand what is being said which is something i used to not like that much but i've been enjoying lately so it was a hit for me like so much that i was very taken aback by all this. it's just hysterical to me that this very genre movie could have this complexity like pack it up francesco rosi.......
#sad to report that enrico maria salerno belongs with those fascist italian actors that actually made good movies..... sometimes#ah but ever since i found out that information i think of his violent summer cameo where he plays jean louis trintignant's father and he#jumps into frame with a bald head and black shirt delivers one deranged monologue and then leaves. perhaps that was not even in the script#and he just did that bc that's how he was behaving casually#fascinating times#oh and there's a lb review from a user i'm not even mutuals with where they review a salerno movie (seasons of our love) and someone in th#comment section asks do you think salerno and gian maria (volonté) got along on set considering salerno was a fascist? dhhdxgghxudbjwkshdjk#maybe not but then again gian maria had bigger things to worry about concering that movie like his BLEACHED eyebrows. unexplicable#yes i have many grievances

Bandidos (Guns of Death, 1967)
"You've been a good teacher."
"A good teacher doesn't teach you to kill."
#bandidos#guns of death#italian cinema#spaghetti western#1967#massimo dallamano#romano migliorini#juan cobos#enrico maria salerno#terry jenkins#maría martín#venantino venantini#marco guglielmi#cris huerta#massimo sarchielli#jesús puente#antonio pica#roberto messina#egisto macchi#although he'd worked as a cinematographer for the best part of a decade (including on Leone's Dollars trilogy) this was Dallamano's first#film as director (and his only western; he's better remembered now for his work in gialli and horror films). it's an extraordinary debut‚ a#visual tour de force with a craftsman's eye for detail and some inventive editing flourishes (of note is an unnervingly long pan across the#aftermath of a train massacre in the opening scene). hyper violent‚ but not flippant with it; the film has a body count to rival most war#films‚ but it's rarely meaningless and is given appropriate weight. Salerno gives a typically strong performance as the marksman legend#whose wounded hands prevent him from getting the revenge he burns for (a typically romantic conceit for the genre) and Venantini is#wonderfully‚ maliciously other worldly as the nemesis who more closely resembles a demonic apparition than a bandit.#it may not have the universal appeal of some of the biggest films within the genre‚ but this is a punchy‚ sharply shot blood soaked#vengeance thriller with some unexpected pathos and real emotional heft‚ and some remarkably unexpected moments#not least the mortally wounded gunman‚ suddenly transfixed by a reproduction of The Death of Sardanapalus‚ seized by the insane#notion of bringing some of the surrounding women with him on his journey to hell; it's the kind of thing you just don't get in every film

This was pretty crazy but I liked it because I looked at it as a fine work-of-art from the 60s. Also, some big-name actors in this movie.
