I get why it happened but I really do think we missed a trick when low(ish)-power consumer electronics switched from AA/AAA/C/D/CR2032/CR1616/LR44/whatever batteries to bespoke lithium packs and USB charging ports. Why couldn't we live in a world where interchangeable, rechargeable cells became dominant instead. (e.g. eneloops, etc.)
I don't wanna have to scour eBay and Amazon and so on looking for replacement parts when my devices stop holding a charge; I wanna get that shit from the grocery store.

Title: Another 90s Camera: Olympus Camedia C-2000 Z
DeviantART Version [CLICK ME!]
Hello, January! Sorry for the long delay, though. Because I have a lot of things that happened at the beginning of 2024. And GOOD NEWS, I've bought something that makes my PC bring back to LIFE, after 7 months of being inactive (since Jun 9th, 2023)! 🖥️🔧😀 Although I'm still working on the topic, maybe I'll submit it this Feb 2024! 😁
Right now, it's time for my 1st throwback item share of 2024, with this neat-old camera (as my improvise).🙂
• Here's another '90s camera, this is the Olympus Camedia C-2000 Z 📷 inherited from my late grandpa named Jim, who passed away on Jun 6th, 2020 owing to complications, as well as the victim of the COVID-19 virus. Once again, R.I.P, grandpa Jim. 😔⚱️🥀 Believe it or not, I used this '90s camera for submitting on dA, back in Jan 2010. 🙂📸🖼️
Here are my snapshots from the 2010s, so far using the 90s Olympus cam: ○ Jan. 4th, 2010 #1 - [CLICK ME!] ○ Jan. 4th, 2010 #2 - [CLICK ME!] ○ Jan. 19th, 2010 - [CLICK ME!]
BTW: #1: All these three we're stored to my dA private storage, but at least I've already posted on tumblr, couple of years ago.
(and) #2: Also, picturing & submitting these photos on whole "January" calendar was utterly coincidence. 😊📸
1st & 2nd Image(s) [took photos on Jan 19th, 2023]: ↑
• Anyways, the 90s Olympus cam possessed 2.1 megapixels of camera 📷✌️, which was pretty clear & and crisp at the time. However, as of 2024, it is considered a pretty low megapixel that no other modern high-quality companies make that, anymore. 🤷♀️ Except for cheap gadgets, of course. And when you compare to your (flagship/mid-range) smartphones 📱/digital cameras 📷 that possessed a whopping 150+ Megapixels, and sometimes 200+ megapixels for the Pro-DSLR camera brands 📷🖼️ speaks volumes to the consumers. It was simply an evolution of the camera lens. Today, like the brick phones from the 90s, the 90s cameras we're now a relic status of the past, meaning no one's using them, anymore due to outdated hardware. They now act as a throwback collection, which simply refuses to throw the trash 🚯, like this ancient 90s Olympus camera. 📷🫳 But hey, if your 90s camera still functions, then you're lucky to used it, but please be careful. 😉
• So, what about the "Olympus" 🇯🇵📷 brand? What happened? Are they still producing cameras? 🤔 Well, according to "quora.com", quote "Olympus has announced in June 2020 that it is selling its camera division to Japan Industrial Partners (JIP) and will exit the camera business altogether. The sale to JIP was completed in January 2021, and the new company created from the sale is called OM Digital Solutions." This means the Olympus camera brand is already off the camera wars; with Canon, Sony, and other Japanese camera brands still running the camera business. However, the Smartphone cameras became more advanced than the old-style digital cams. Here's hoping, that the digit cams will have the same treatment, or maybe still be around in case the smartphone's camera pixels weren't enough, in terms of the raw image.📷🤞
3rd & 4th Image(s) [Took photos on Jan 29th, 2024]: ↑
• Uh yeah, I forgot that the camera includes a soft case fitting for this model. And look, my paper dolls were delighted to see a throwback camera & they wanted a snapshot using it. 🙂📸 Yeah, but it's no longer working 📷❌, and I tried (using 4 Eneloop AA Batteries) 🔋🔋🔋🔋🤷♀️. So much so, that I decided to pretend to take snapshots with the old cam while taking photos with my actual camera from my current smartphone (Honor 8C). Was that a coincidence? 🤔 I'm not so sure 😅, but they're delighted. 😊
Well, that’s the end of my topic, more things to come this 2024. 😊

I’ve been volunteering at a local nature preserve where there are motion cameras set up, and the video captures have been illuminating: coyotes, mule deer, bobcats, bears... and of course there are dozens of animal cam vids on TKSST. So when we discovered signs of animal activity in our back yard, we wanted to know: Opossum? Skunk? Raccoon?
High-end night vision, motion-triggered trail cams can be expensive, so I was really happy to find this affordable, highly-rated Vikeri 4K 32MP trail cam. Its settings tailor resolution, activation speed, video length and more, and it comes in a weather-proof case with a sturdy strap, SD card, and starter batteries. (I did, however, also order more rechargeable Eneloops.)
This nature-observation tool is a fantastic educational activity for the whole family, and it was ridiculously fun to find a few videos waiting for us after the first night. 🦨
Get this trail cam

I've been seeing some similar themes in the tags on this post and wanted to respond to a few of them.
"Do people really not have a device that can act as a radio?"
When I talk about "a radio," I do not mean a device that can also listen to radio stations. A car, a laptop, etc. I mean a dedicated radio - whether that's a little pocket size one like I have or an old school cd/radio boombox (ideally with back up batteries) or a hand crank emergency radio - things like that.
The reasons for this are that I think people would benefit from having a radio in their home to listen when they would otherwise use a streaming service and in emergencies when internet and cell towers often to go down and listening via data is a no go.
I think there are people - and it's not just younger people, it's all ages - who almost don't believe me when I say that those things often fail in emergencies or they think it happens to emergencies that don't tend to happen to them. I've heard stories of towers failing in mild snow storms (Texas Snowstorms 2021), wildfires (Canadian Wildfires 2023), and mass shootings/violence (Boston 2013). Hell, windstorms (no tornados) knocked our internet out for almost a week last spring.
So yes - very few people in my life at least have a dedicated radio.
"I don't have the space."
Check if your phone manufacturer and carrier have unlocked your phone's FM capabilities. Mine hasn't but many do. If so you can use an app like NextRadio to tap into it. Test without data to confirm it's actually working. Congrats on the new radio in your pocket!
If you have even a little space, pocket radios are a great option. They get great reception for their size. I am literally living in a walkout basement surrounded by retaining walls so thick I struggle to get internet from our router - but I can get crystal clear stations from 50 miles away. Unfortunately, most still take batteries so it's a plus if you already have some rechargeable batteries or space to charge them.
If not, some mp3 players (some of which are real tiny) and Walkman style CD players also have FM radio capability and usb-c or mini charging. The quality is a little lower in my experience but if you're in a city or other ideal spot to get signal, then it should work fine.
"You can listen to right wind talk shows and pick apart their arguments." or "You can listen to all the unhinged right wing takes people are hearing in your community."
If you want to listen in a genuine attempt to empathize with and understand the media ecosystems your neighbors are in - I think that's a great endeavor honestly.
If you want to listen to pick things apart, prepare to fight with people in a way that will never change their minds but make you feel "right" and "good" - don't. I mean obviously I can't stop you but like - don't.
Like I am a longtime Leftist, but I don't even listen to Left wing talk radio. Because just like Right wing talk radio, it's meant to keep you angry to keep you listening. It's meant to scare you so you feel like listening will keep you safe. It doesn't really matter what side of the political spectrum it's on, it's not great for you.
Give a shit about your nervous system. Don't self harm it. Hypervigilance isn't productive, it kills.
For those who are curious this is my radio - wish I had a better link but even the company website sends me here.
Not the cheapest, it was a birthday gift. I upgraded to the reel antenna later since it gives me a little more flexibility in my small, underground room lol. I don't usually listen with headphones personally but they work just as well as an antenna. I use eneloop rechargeable batteries that my partner found deeply on sale one Black Friday.
You Should Get A Radio
I want to convince you to get a radio. It can be a pretty cheap one - you can sometimes thrift them even - just something to listen to the music and shows that are literally streaming completely for free all around you right this very moment.
Libraries get a lot of love - deservedly so. They are such a frugal resource for entertainment and the community at large. I would argue that radio is very similar.
Find New Music
Radio can introduce you to music you never would have run across otherwise. Spotify and the like have a goal of getting you to listen for as long as possible. This incentivizes the alorgithm picking your music recs to stay very safely within your known listening profile. But since a radio station is broadcasting to a large number of people, not you individually, you're more likely to run into music you personally wouldn't have picked but actually enjoy.
Not to mention that if you're in the US at least, you're very likely within range of a public broadcasting station which not only has local and national news, but various music shows as well - World Cafe is a treasure. College radio stations, if you have one nearby by, can be hit or miss, but in general, it is a great way to find local and very niche music you wouldn't hear played anywhere else. If you're in a city, you very likely have a couple of hyperlocal low power FM stations - many who serve communities who don't speak English and who have their own unique music programming. I also enjoy a lot of the adult contemporary and "oldies" stations I can get near me.
The Ads Aren't Targeted
On most stations, you'll hear some ads. Some stations you'll hear more than a few. But none of those ads are based on an ever growing mass of information being collected about you and your listening habits to decide what specific ad you're most likely to actually act on. They're just...an ad. When you turn it off, it can't follow you around until you actually buy it.
Also, if you're listening to local stations, a lot of the ads are for local businesses in your community; places owned by your neighbors and the people you live with. For me, it's been a nice way to be reminded of what places exist in my community since I usually go to my regular haunts and nothing else.
Frugal and Fun
Radios can be pretty cheap. I see them in thrift stores pretty regularly around here and you might be able to try Marketplace for one. Mine was a birthday gift and I paid a little more to upgrade the antena later. Mine uses rechargeable batteries but I think they make ones that are just straight up rechargeable now.
Since I can't control the music, I'm not turning to it to skip through music or pick a different playlist or look up a given artist I want to hear because I just remembered they existed. I'm more present, whether I'm just listening to the show or pairing it with something else (recently it's been knitting or solitaire games).
Similar to the way that libraries can be one way you decrease your reliance on subscription culture, radio is another. Especially for public broadcasting stations, the programming is always changing, there are new shows every week, and there are often ways for you to get involved. It's another form of entertainment that often gets overlooked.
It's Screen Free
Not much to say here. It's just a big plus to me. I'm trying to take more breaks from screens and make the time I do spend on screens less addictive. I like that I can throw on a radio station and listen to a show without ever having to resist the urge to check email or something.
Vital in Emergencies
Have you thought of how you'd get information during an emergency if the internet goes out? Radio is a great option and still regularly saves lives. In the event of emergencies, local radio stations are often some of the very first people to get information on where shelters are being set up, where resoruces are being distributed, and how to stay safe through the course of the event. Depending on the event, emergency managers will actually bring in radio equipment to keep broadcasting going if there's been damage to a tower and even set up temporary/mobile station up to get the word out if there's not a local station they can partner with.
On days when the weather isn't looking so great, I often have the weather band radio turned on so I can get the latest NWS forecasts and hear when a watch is issued - phones usually only get warnings unless you go out of your way to sign up for more. And out where I live, I usually don't even get those since cell signal is spotty.
It's a great investment in your safety that you can also enjoy whenever.
Conclusion
Buy a radio. Especially if you're looking to get away from subscriptions and cut costs. You can own your radio - you can't own Spotify. It's also just something I think everyone should have since it's such a vital resource in emergencies.
ETA: I am a young millinial. I grew up with radio and remember a time before the internet so I'm not saying any of this as if I'm discovering it. It's more I've been not only enjoying it a lot lately but reminded that a lot of people aren't aware of everything it offers so I wanted to share that in case it was news to anyone.

Work Details
Software
"Future SUSHI" includes two robots serving as the restaurant's managers, each engaging with guests.
The face of the artist, Etsuko Ichihara, was captured via 3D scanning and replicated in full-color resin to create masks for the robots. These masks, combined with motion programming that mimics Ichihara's movements, simulate a dystopian human clone using current technology.
The robots feature chest-mounted tablets that display menus mimicking the UI of Japanese sushi restaurants. They cyclically make and serve sushi while sequentially introducing every item on the menu. After presenting the last item, the robots experience a memory scramble, prompting them to restart the menu presentation from the beginning.
Another smaller robot is equipped with multilingual support to accommodate a global audience. This robot reacts to voice recognition from the audience to recommend sushi items and intentionally incorporates bug-like behaviors, such as sporadically revealing a different personality.
The robots utilized in the installation are humanoid robots from Softbank Robotics, specifically Pepper and Nao. The application development software used is Choregraphe.
[From Curator's critique by Dr. Lena Fritsch, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford]
Ichihara's use of humanoids, which have also appeared in a number of her past works, mirrors Japan's interest in linking humans or animals with technological objects, often in a light-hearted manner.
I agree with technology researcher Sone Yuji, who has examined Ichihara's works through the lens of Japanese "techno-animism", arguing that there is a strong tradition of animism in Japan: it can be found in a "wide range of phenomena, beliefs, and practices, accounting for a wide range of spirits, gods, ancestors, ghosts, or malevolent monsters. Expanding on this idea of animism, a sense of social agency that blurs distinctions between organic beings and inanimate objects, and between humans and technological things, can also be assigned to the man-made-something that indeed appears to be deeply rooted in Japanese culture. Ichihara's art combining elements of Shintoism, Buddhism, and traditional culture with cutting edge technology represents a distinctively Japanese approach that cultural anthropologist Ann Alison has found in technological toy creations such as the Tamagotchi, defining it as the "animist unconscious".
Hardware
This installation comprises a combination of multiple devices:
[Food Samples]
The future sushi has been recreated using the traditional food sample technique from Japan's food industry. The artist interviewed scientists about future food trends and related scientific technologies, combining this evidence with their imagination to conceive and create future sushi under the policy of "half science, half fantasy." A total of 18 types of sushi were produced.
Here are examples of Future SUSHI.
- 2030 / Cultured Fish Meat SUSHI BABY - A sushi larva being cultured in a petri dish, very popular among citizens. Eating is prohibited since it is a companion sushi.
-2050 / Second Stomach Install Sushi - A sushi that assists gastrointestinal functions of mankind with a degenerated digestive organ.
-2070 / Deep Sea Fish Sushi - As a result of marine resources depletion, deep-sea fish are now served for human consumption. Not so sure about freshness and taste so deep-frying is recommended. Eating it raw is unsafe.
[Sushi Plate devices]
Illuminated sushi plates themed around "Future Sushi" were developed. Magical circles created by laser cutting shine with small LEDs, imagining the sushi appearing in the present day through a portal from the future society. Devices made by 3D printing are embedded in the underside of the plates, powered by Eneloop batteries, and can be switched on and off. The coloring is designed to match the form of each sushi.
[Sushi conveyor]
The sushi conveyor, symbolizing the representation of automation and the relentless flow of time prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, was chosen for its relevance. Using real conveyor chains for sushi ensures stable operation.
[Magical dystopian security gate] As a boundary marker of the dystopian worldview, a security gate stands at the entrance to Future SUSHI. When humans pass through, it detects "future contraband," causing magical circles to light up randomly. Implemented with Arduino, infrared sensors, and Neopixel, it reacts to human passage through the gate. Only children are exempt from the contraband detection (with an exclusion setting for children's height).
[Other objects of the installation] -Mysterious Sushi Showcase: A showcase that contains replicas of such futuristic ingredients as brains, cultured salmon roe, artificial wasabi, and natural fish aged for 70 years.
-Future SUSHI Price List: A list of future SUSHI prices. The currency is NY (Neo YEN), and prices are estimated to be 100 times the current prices due to inflation. With the note: "Survival tax and oxygen charges are not included.”
Technical Requirements
[Equipment provided by the artist]
Essentials: - 18 food samples of futuristic sushi - 18 rotating sushi plates - Eneloop batteries (AAA) x20 and a charger
Items to send according to exhibition requirements: - Humanoid robot / Softbank Nao (for overseas exhibitions, a smaller robot will mainly be used) - Robot face masks - Rotating conveyor (for overseas shipping, a lighter and simplified mechanism will be considered; for a previous exhibition in Graz, Austria, a full-scale product conveyor was sourced locally, so using the same fixture might be possible) - LED mechanism for magical circle gate, circular acrylic, Arduino - Other decorative items and equipment can be provided as needed - Note: For a minimum package excluding the robot, shipping costs from Japan to Austria are approximately 450€ (based on previous exhibition experience in Graz). Items can be customized according to budget and exhibition content
[Equipments by Ars Electronica]
- 1 monitor - 1 PC for robot control - 1 display fixture for the robot - Fixture simulating an airport gate - Power supply
[Space requirements]
- A space of 5m x 5m is desirable, ideally with at least one wall - A dimly lit space is preferable for LED visibility
[Required persons and support]
- Having staff familiar with the robot control app (Choregraphe) is desirable; the operation is straightforward and can be performed by anyone - Daily battery replacement for sushi plates is necessary
[Notes]
- The design and content of the exhibition can be flexibly adjusted according to budget and space requirements

Me 🇵🇭: Mmmmm! These trio of Mickey D's we're pretty damn good! I've already tried these three meals 🍔🍟🍦😋, with the "Quarter Pounder" was so juicy as the "Big Mac" (which I also tried that, too) before! And you know what, I remember ordering two Quarter Pounders at the McDo 🇵🇭 for the price of one! 🍔🍔😋 His purchasing Duracell batteries for his XBOX ONE controller, on the other hand, sounds a decent choice. However, he should it buy a long-lasting "Rechargeable" batteries (like my "Eneloop"), instead. Just saying. 🔋🎮😊 Nonetheless, I could imagined that I'm playing XBOX games with him, while we're munching our Mickey D's! Yum-yum! 😁
My mom gave me a quarter pounder hamburger and fries from McDonald’s.
Plus a Duracell batteries for my XBOX ONE controller. I wish I had a Duracell charger so I don’t get more batteries…
