@dee-the-red-witch and @rustbeltjessie both tagged me for a 5 favorite songs game recently and unfortunately this is a fraught effort bc my 5 favorite songs don't even remain consistent across listening to 5 songs HOWEVER I will respond with the first 5 songs I thought of (which will probably be some blend of associations and recent listening!)
Nemesis, by Shriekback [youtube]
Only Anarchists Are Pretty, by World/Inferno Friendship Society [youtube]
This Land, by Gary Clark Jr. [youtube]
100% (110% Fucked Remix), by Angelspit (Combichrist remix) [youtube]
The Chemical Worker's Song (Process Man), by Great Big Sea (covering Ron Angel) [youtube]
Shoutout to Welcome Me (Indigo Girls), Shine On (Apoptygma Berzerk covering House of Love), and No Diggity (Blackstreet) which I also thought of, but are technically more than 5.
I guess I'm supposed to tag people now? I pick.... @firstruleofmethclub @belovedgoofball @taran-wanderer @quannaix @vinegartree @tromboneralert @wildhaunt @crypticcripple and @amerillo342

Honestly I am still equal parts impressed and amused that REO Speedwagon's 1981 hit Take It In The Run is one of the best models for how to healthily address conversations about infidelity in contemporary(ish) pop culture.
Heard is from a friend who/Heard it from a friend who/Heard it from another you been messin' around
Establishes the conversation topic as well as why the topic is on the singer's mind
They say you got a boyfriend/You're out late every weekend/They're talkin' about you and it's bringin' me down
Details of the behavior that is causing the singer concern and the impact those rumors are having on his emotions
But I know the neighborhood/And talk is cheap when the story is good/And thr tales grow taller on down the line
Establishes that the singer recognizes the fallibility of rumor and is not immediately accusing his partner of cheating
But I'm telling you babe/That I don't think it's true babe
Establishes that the singer is willing to trust his partner in spite of people's talk
And even if it is keep this in mind
Denotes that a (potentially difficult) boundary conversation is about to be begun
You take it on the run baby/If that's the way you want it baby/Then I don't want you around
Clearly states the singer's personal boundaries - he acknowledges his partner's full agency to pursue whatever dynamics they wish, while unequivocally stating that if those dynamics include infidelity then he will not continue being in a relationship with them
I don't believe it/Not for a minute/You're under the gun/So you take it on the run
Reaffirms previous statements that the singer sees the rumors as only rumors unless they're proven otherwise, and also reaffirms the singer's firm relationship boundary
And like...this kind of clear and non-confrontational conversational framework is the sort of conflict resolution style most people have to be coached on to do well. The person from whose POV Take It On the Run is sung from has an unexpectedly mature approach toward talking about relationship conflicts.
#This is a post I've wanted to make for MONTHS but just kept forgetting cos I pretty much only hear the song while driving#And that's a TERRIBLE time to be posting online#REO Speedwagon#Take In On The Run#Endreal vs. music#(sort of)

"I'll Be" is just "Iris" for socially well-adjusted 90s moms

Ohhhhhhh my god I totally forgot to mention this the other day but on Wednesday I was running some errands and listening to the radio in the car and heard the wildest thing - did y'all know someone did an English version of Despacito?
#I mean the proper song was there too but it's like it'd been dubbed over by some autotuned-to-hell American twink#Endreal vs. music#Radio gaga

Could you imagine being Bob Dylan's kid and instead of coasting on that reputation you have the brass balls to go out and write one of the defining alt-rock songs of the 90s

@taran-wanderer @wildhaunt or any of my other tunefully-inclined mutuals/followers want to help me ID a song?
I heard it on the radio the other day while driving so I couldn't reverse search it then. Remembered details are:
Woman vocalist
Bluesy instrumentation
Reminded me of Nights in White Satin, if it was a vintage country song
Pretty sure chorus included lines "you know that I love you" and "don't understand" at different points

Why didn't I checked out Dwight Yoakam sooner? Sarah Shook literally namedropped him in one of her songs. That's like a recommendation in a whiskey glass right there.

My favorite thing about deep blue something is that the guys in that band look nothing like the kind of people you would expect to perform deep blue something's music
Like, tell me this isn't a 2004 nu-metal band
