Kashmir Hillâs âYour Face Belongs to Usâ
This Friday (September 22), I'm (virtually) presenting at the DIG Festival in Modena, Italy. That night, I'll be in person at LA's Book Soup for the launch of Justin C Key's "The World Wasnât Ready for You." On September 27, I'll be at Chevalier's Books in Los Angeles with Brian Merchant for a joint launch for my new book The Internet Con and his new book, Blood in the Machine.
Your Face Belongs To Us is Kashmir Hill's new tell-all history of Clearview AI, the creepy facial recognition company whose origins are mired in far-right politics, off-the-books police misconduct, sales to authoritarian states and sleazy one-percenter one-upmanship:
https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/691288/your-face-belongs-to-us-by-kashmir-hill/
Hill is a fitting chronicler here. Clearview first rose to prominence â or, rather, notoriety â with the publication of her 2020 expose on the company, which had scraped more than a billion facial images from the web, and then started secretly marketing a search engine for faces to cops, spooks, private security firms, and, eventually, repressive governments:
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/18/technology/clearview-privacy-facial-recognition.html
Hill's original blockbuster expose was followed by an in-depth magazine feature and then a string more articles, which revealed the company's origins in white nationalist movements, and the mercurial jourey of its founder, Hoan Ton-That:
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/03/18/magazine/facial-recognition-clearview-ai.html
The story of Clearview's technology is an interesting one, a story about the machine learning gold-rush where modestly talented technologists who could lay hands on sufficient data could throw it together with off-the-shelf algorithms and do things that had previously been considered impossible. While Clearview has plenty of competitors today, as recently as a couple of years ago, it played like a magic trick.
That's where the more interesting story of Clearview's founding comes in. Hill is a meticulous researcher and had the benefit of a disaffected â and excommunicated â Clearview co-founder, who provided her with masses of internal communications. She also benefited from the court documents from the flurry of lawsuits that Clearview prompted.
What emerges from these primary sources â including multiple interviews with Ton-That â is a story about a move-fast-and-break-things company at the tail end of the forgiveness-not-permission era of technological development. Clearview's founders are violating laws and norms, they're short on cash, and they're racing across the river on the backs of alligators, hoping to reach the riches on the opposite bank without losing a leg.
A decade ago, they might have played as heroes. Today, they're just grifters â bullshitters faking it until they make it, lying to Hill (and getting caught out), and the rest of us. The founders themselves are erratic weirdos, and not the fun kind of weirdos, either. Ton-That â who emigrated to Silicon Valley from Australia as a teenager, seeking a techie's fortune â comes across as a bro-addled dimbulb who threw his lot in with white nationalists, MAGA Republicans, Rudy Guiliani bagmen, Peter Theil, and assorted other tech-adjascent goblins.
Meanwhile, biometrics generally â and facial recognition specifically â is a discipline with a long and sordid history, inextricably entwined with phrenology and eugenics, as Hill describes in a series of interstitial chapters that recount historical attempts to indentify the facial features that correspond with criminality and low intelligence.
These interstitials are woven into a-ha moments from Clearview's history, in which various investors, employees, hangers-on, competitors and customers speculate about how a facial-recognition system could eventually not just recognize criminals, but predict criminality. It's a potent reminder of the AI industry's many overlaps with "race-science" and other quack beliefs.
Hill also describes how Clearview and its competitors' recklessness and arrogance created the openings for shrewd civil libertarians to secure bipartisan support for biometric privacy laws, most notably Illinois' best-of-breed Biometric Information Privacy Act:
https://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/ilcs3.asp?ActID=3004&ChapterID=57
But by the end of the book, Hill makes the case that Ton-That and his competitors have gotten away with it. Facial recognition is now so easy to build that â she says â we're unlikely to abolish it, despite all the many horrifying ways that FR could fuck up our societies. It's a sobering conclusion, and while Hill holds out some hope for curbing the official use of FR, she seems resigned to a future in which â for example â creepy guys covertly snap photos of women on the street, use those pictures to figure out their names and addresses, and then stalk and harass them.
If she's right, this is Ton-That's true legacy, and the legacy of the funders who handed him millions to spend building this. Perhaps someone else would have stepped into that sweaty, reckless-grifter-shaped hole if Ton-That hadn't been there to fill it, but in our timeline, we can say that Ton-That was the bumbler who helped destroy something precious.

ChatGPT and the movie âHerâ are just the latest example of the âsci-fi feedback loopâ
by Rizwan Virk, Faculty Associate and PhD Candidate in Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology at Arizona State University
In May 2024, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman sparked a firestorm by referencing the 2013 movie âHerâ to highlight the novelty of the latest iteration of ChatGPT.
Within days, actor Scarlett Johansson, who played the voice of Samantha, the AI girlfriend of the protagonist in the movie âHer,â accused the company of improperly using her voice after she had spurned their offer to make her the voice of ChatGPTâs new virtual assistant. Johansson ended up suing OpenAI and has been invited to testify before Congress.
This tiff highlights a broader interchange between Hollywood and Silicon Valley thatâs called the âsci-fi feedback loop.â The subject of my doctoral research, the sci-fi feedback loop explores how science fiction and technological innovation feed off each other. This dynamic is bidirectional and can sometimes play out over many decades, resulting in an ongoing loop.
Fiction sparks dreams of Moon travel
One of the most famous examples of this loop is Moon travel.
Jules Verneâs 1865 novel âFrom the Earth to the Moonâ and the fiction of H.G. Wells inspired one of the first films to visualize such a journey, 1902âs âA Trip to the Moon.â
The fiction of Verne and Wells also influenced future rocket scientists such as Robert Goddard, Hermann Oberth and Oberthâs better-known protĂ©gĂ©, Wernher von Braun. The innovations of these men â including the V-2 rocket built by von Braun during World War II â inspired works of science fiction, such as the 1950 film âDestination Moon,â which included a rocket that looked just like the V-2.
Films like âDestination Moonâ would then go on to bolster public support for lavish government spending on the space program.
youtube
Creative symbiosis
The sci-fi feedback loop generally follows the same cycle.
First, the technological climate of a given era will shape that periodâs science fiction. For example, the personal computing revolution of the 1970s and 1980s directly inspired the works of cyberpunk writers Neal Stephenson and William Gibson.
Then the sci-fi that emerges will go on to inspire real-world technological innovation. In his 1992 classic âSnow Crash,â Stephenson coined the term âmetaverseâ to describe a 3-D, video game-like world accessed through virtual reality goggles.
Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and innovators have been trying to build a version of this metaverse ever since. The virtual world of the video game Second Life, released in 2003, took a stab at this: Players lived in virtual homes, went to virtual dance clubs and virtual concerts with virtual girlfriends and boyfriends, and were even paid virtual dollars for showing up at virtual jobs.
This technology seeded yet more fiction; in my research, I discovered that sci-fi novelist Ernest Cline had spent a lot of time playing Second Life, and it inspired the metaverse of his bestselling novel âReady Player One.â
The cycle continued: Employees of Oculus VR â now known as Meta Reality Labs â were given copies of âReady Player Oneâ to read as they developed the companyâs virtual reality headsets. When Facebook changed its name to Meta in 2021, it did so in the hopes of being at the forefront of building the metaverse, though the companyâs grand ambitions have tempered somewhat.
Another sci-fi franchise that has its fingerprints all over this loop is âStar Trek,â which first aired in 1966, right in the middle of the space race.
Steve Perlman, the inventor of Appleâs QuickTime media format and player, said he was inspired by an episode of âStar Trek: The Next Generation,â in which Lt. Commander Data, an android, sifts through multiple streams of audio and video files. And Rob Haitani, the designer of the Palm Pilotâs operating system, has said that the bridge on the Enterprise influenced its interface.
In my research, I also discovered that the showâs Holodeck â a room that could simulate any environment â influenced both the name and the development of Microsoftâs HoloLens augmented reality glasses.
From ALICE to âHerâ
Which brings us back to OpenAI and âHer.â
In the movie, the protagonist, Theodore, played by Joaquin Phoenix, acquires an AI assistant, âSamantha,â voiced by Johansson. He begins to develop feelings for Samantha â so much so that he starts to consider her his girlfriend.
ChatGPT-4o, the latest version of the generative AI software, seems to be able to cultivate a similar relationship between user and machine. Not only can ChatGPT-4o speak to you and âunderstandâ you, but it can also do so sympathetically, as a romantic partner would.
Thereâs little doubt that the depiction of AI in âHerâ influenced OpenAIâs developers. In addition to Altmanâs tweet, the companyâs promotional videos for ChatGPT-4o feature a chatbot speaking with a job candidate before his interview, propping him up and encouraging him â as, well, an AI girlfriend would. The AI featured in the clips, Ars Technica observed, was âdisarmingly lifelike,â and willing âto laugh at your jokes and your dumb hat.â
But you might be surprised to learn that a previous generation of chatbots inspired Spike Jonze, the director and screenwriter of âHer,â to write the screenplay in the first place. Nearly a decade before the filmâs release, Jonze had interacted with a version of the ALICE chatbot, which was one of the first chatbots to have a defined personality â in ALICEâs case, that of a young woman.
The ALICE chatbot won the Loebner Prize three times, which was awarded annually until 2019 to the AI software that came closest to passing the Turing Test, long seen as a threshold for determining whether artificial intelligence has become indistinguishable from human intelligence.
The sci-fi feedback loop has no expiration date. AIâs ability to form relationships with humans is a theme that continues to be explored in fiction and real life.
A few years after âHer,â âBlade Runner 2049â featured a virtual girlfriend, Joi, with a holographic body. Well before the latest drama with OpenAI, companies had started developing and pitching virtual girlfriends, a process that will no doubt continue. As science fiction writer and social media critic Cory Doctorow wrote in 2017, âScience fiction does something better than predict the future: It influences it.â

Healthcare Market Research: Why Does It Matter?Â
Healthcare market research (MR) providers interact with several stakeholders to discover and learn about in-demand treatment strategies and patientsâ requirements. Their insightful reports empower medical professionals, insurance companies, and pharma businesses to engage with patients in more fulfilling ways. This post will elaborate on the growing importance of healthcare market research.Â
What is Healthcare Market Research?Â
Market research describes consumer and competitor behaviors using first-hand or public data collection methods, like surveys and web scraping. In medicine and life sciences, clinicians and accessibility device developers can leverage it to improve patient outcomes. They grow faster by enhancing their approaches as validated MR reports recommend.Â
Finding key opinion leaders (KOL), predicting demand dynamics, or evaluating brand recognition efforts becomes more manageable thanks to domain-relevantâŻhealthcare market research consulting. Although primary MR helps with authority-building, monitoring how others in the target field innovate their business models is also essential. So, global health and life science enterprises value secondary market research as much as primary data-gathering procedures.Â
The Importance of Modern Healthcare Market ResearchÂ
1| Learning What Competitors Might Do NextÂ
Businesses must beware of market share fluctuations due to competitorsâ expansion strategies. If your clients are more likely to seek help from rival brands, this situation suggests failure to compete.Â
Companies might provide fitness products, over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, or childcare facilities. However, they will always lose to a competitor who can satisfy the stakeholdersâ demands more efficiently. These developments evolve over the years, during which you can study and estimate business rivalsâ future vision.Â
You want to track competing businessesâ press releases, public announcements, new product launches, and marketing efforts. You must also analyze their quarter-on-quarter market performance. If the data processing scope exceeds your tech capabilities, consider usingâŻhealthcare data management servicesâŻoffering competitive intelligence integrations.Â
2| Understanding Patients and Their Needs for Unique TreatmentâŻÂ
Patients can experience unwanted bodily changes upon consuming a medicine improperly. Otherwise, they might struggle to use your accessibility technology. If healthcare providers implement a user-friendly feedback and complaint collection system, they can reduce delays. As a result, patients will find a cure for their discomfort more efficiently.Â
However, processing descriptive responses through manual means is no longer necessary. Most market research teams have embraced automated unstructured data processing breakthroughs. They can guess a customerâs emotions and intentions from submitted texts without frequent human intervention. This era of machine learning (ML) offers ample opportunities to train ML systems to sort patientsâ responses quickly.Â
So, life science companies can increase their employeesâ productivity if their healthcare market research providers support ML-based feedback sorting and automation strategies.Â
Besides, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and animal care facilities can incorporate virtual or physical robots powered by conversational artificial intelligence (AI). Doing so is one of the potential approaches to addressing certain patientsâ loneliness problems throughout hospitalization. Utilize MR to ask your stakeholders whether such integrations improve their living standards.Â
3| Improving Marketing and SalesÂ
Healthcare market research aids pharma and biotechnology corporations to categorize customer preferences according to their impact on sales. It also reveals how brands can appeal to more people when introducing a new product or service. One approach is to shut down or downscale poorly performing ideas.Â
If a healthcare facility can reduce resources spent on underperforming promotions, it can redirect them to more engaging campaigns. Likewise, MR specialists let patients and doctors directly communicate their misgivings about such a medicine or treatment via online channels. The scale of these surveys can extend to national, continental, or global markets. It is more accessible as cloud platforms flexibly adjust the resources a market research project may need.Â
With consistent communication involving doctors, patients, equipment vendors, and pharmaceutical brands, the healthcare industry will be more accountable. It will thrive sustainably.Â
Healthcare Market Research: Is It Ethical?Â
Market researchers in healthcare and life sciences will rely more on data-led planning as competition increases and customers demand richer experiences like telemedicine. Remember, it is not surprising how awareness regarding healthcare infrastructure has skyrocketed since 2020. At the same time, life science companies must proceed with caution when handling sensitive data in a patientâs clinical history.Â
On one hand, universities and private research projects need more healthcare data. Meanwhile, threats of clinical record misuse are real, having irreparable financial and psychological damage potential.Â
Ideally, hospitals, laboratories, and pharmaceutical firms must inform patients about the use of health records for research or treatment intervention. Today, reputed data providers often conduct MR surveys, use focus groups, and scan scholarly research publications. They want to respect patientsâ choice in who gets to store, modify, and share the data.Â
Best Practices for Healthcare Market Research ProjectsÂ
Legal requirements affecting healthcare data analysis, market research, finance, and ethics vary worldwide. Your data providers must recognize and respect this reality. Otherwise, gathering, storing, analyzing, sharing, or deleting a patientâs clinical records can increase legal risks.Â
Even if a healthcare business has no malicious intention behind extracting insights, cybercriminals can steal healthcare data. Therefore, invest in robust IT infrastructure, partner with experts, and prioritize data governance.Â
Like customer-centricity in commercial market research applications, dedicate your design philosophy to patient-centricity.Â
Incorporating health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) will depend on real-world evidence (RWE). Therefore, protect data integrity and increase quality management standards. If required, find automated data validation assistance and develop or rent big data facilities.Â
Capture data on present industry trends while maintaining a grasp on long-term objectives. After all, a lot of data is excellent for accuracy, but relevance is the backbone of analytical excellence and business focus.Â
ConclusionÂ
Given this situation, transparency is the key to protecting stakeholder faith in healthcare data management. As such, MR consultants must act accordingly. Healthcare market research is not unethical. Yet, this statement stays valid only if a standardized framework specifies when patientsâ consent trumps medical researchersâ data requirements. Healthcare market research is not unethical. Yet, this statement stays valid only if a standardized framework specifies when patientsâ consent trumps medical researchersâ data requirements.Â
Market research techniques can help fix the long-standing communication and ethics issues in doctor-patient relationships if appropriately configured, highlighting their importance in the healthcare industryâs progress. When patients willingly cooperate with MR specialists, identifying recovery challenges or clinical devicesâ ergonomic failures is quick. No wonder that health and life sciences organizations want to optimize their offerings by using market research.Â

As we stand on the brink of a technological revolution that will fundamentally alter the way we live, work, and relate to one another, the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the job market is a topic of intense debate and speculation. In this era of rapid change, understanding the potential shifts and preparing for the future is crucial for individuals and organizations alike. The Double-Edged Sword of AI AI's influence on the job market can be viewed as a double-edged sword. On one side, AI promises to enhance efficiency, reduce human error, and unlock new realms of innovation. Automation can take over mundane, repetitive tasks, freeing humans to focus on creative, strategic, and more meaningful work. This shift has the potential to improve quality of life and open up new career paths that we can scarcely imagine today. On the other side, the rapid advancement of AI technologies brings the fear of job displacement. Roles that are heavily reliant on routine tasks, across sectors such as manufacturing, administrative work, and even certain aspects of customer service, are at risk. The concern is not just about job loss but also about the widening skills gap. As AI evolves, the demand for digital literacy, technical skills, and adaptability increases, leaving behind those who cannot keep pace. The Sectors at the Forefront The impact of AI will not be uniform across all sectors. Industries such as healthcare, finance, and education are poised for significant transformation. In healthcare, AI can assist in diagnosis, personalized treatment plans, and managing patient data, augmenting the capabilities of medical professionals. Finance will see smarter algorithms for risk assessment, fraud detection, and customer service. Education will benefit from personalized learning experiences and AI tutors, making education more accessible and tailored to individual needs. However, these sectors will also face challenges, including ethical considerations, privacy concerns, and the need for robust regulatory frameworks to ensure that the deployment of AI technologies benefits society as a whole. Preparing for the Future The key to navigating the AI revolution in the job market lies in preparation and adaptability. For individuals, lifelong learning and skill development are paramount. Embracing a mindset of continuous learning and staying abreast of technological trends will be essential for career resilience. Skills in critical thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence will become more valuable as these are areas where humans excel over machines. For organizations, the focus should be on leveraging AI to enhance human work rather than replace it. This involves rethinking job roles, investing in employee training, and creating a culture that encourages innovation and adaptation. Policymakers play a crucial role in ensuring a smooth transition into this new era. Implementing policies that support education and training programs, foster innovation, and protect workers' rights will be critical. Moreover, there's a need for dialogue between governments, businesses, and educational institutions to develop strategies that address the challenges and opportunities posed by AI. The Path Forward The AI revolution offers an opportunity to reimagine the future of work. While there are challenges ahead, proactive preparation and a focus on the human aspects of work can lead to a future where AI and humans coexist in synergy. By enhancing our unique human capacities and harnessing the power of AI, we can create a job market that is more dynamic, inclusive, and fulfilling for all.

Hey! Just checking in and letting everyone know things have been really good. My family is doing well, even planning on finally going on vacation. Work is good, still crazy and weird as ever and I'm currently going through my yearly retraining. My health could be better, I'm still getting lightheaded due to LBP but nothing serious like before, I just need to watch my hydration levels and eat a bit more salt.
Luna and the kittens are so big now! I doubt you'll recognize them. They grew up so fast and they're little monsters. I love them. I'll get some photos of them soon.
My analog life is going well, got a lot of things I've been procrastinating out of the way at last, been dabbling in analog photography with my brother, bought an instant camera, been buying analog media, and doing some gardening as Spring is just right around the corner. I started a carnivorous plant terrarium, and one with some collected moss and lichen. Really interesting to just observe them, you find details about them that are fascinating all the time, and just watching them thrive is satisfying. I'm also going to order some mushroom spores (oyster variety) and create a kino-terrium, an enclosed space to watch the develop of the mushroom. Since they grow so fast, they'd be a good subject for time-lapse photography. And the results will be delicious mushrooms to stir fry.
I got a lot of things planned. I'm even thinking of buying supplies from the labs to start my own bioluminescent algae tank for my home. They're the same thing as what you'd find during the blue tide. I think a jar of them plus the grow lights are just under $15 from the supply station, and are readily available year round, since some employees make glowing ornaments during Christmas.
Speaking of the labs....
I'm currently collaborating with Brun on a project that involves early warning detection systems for flood prone areas. A huge issue in our region. They're devices that stay dormant until activated by rain water, and they're shaped like trilobites! It's a perfect blend of Brun's love of future engineering and my love of a prehistoric aesthetic. In fact he knows me so well, he bought me a mini mammoth plushie for my birthday last year. It's so cute. I have to think about what I might get him. I was thinking one of those retro tin robots. I think he'd get a kick out of it considering he works with robotics and ai.
Annnd that's about it. I'm still unsure when I'll be coming back to this blog. I'm still working on why social media is causing me so much dread and anxiety. I think the culture in it is to blame, it's more hostile I think, and while that hostility isn't aimed at me, I still feel it secondhand. Might be part of my empathy trait. The bad vibes are affecting me and my mind is like "yeah, I don't need that energy in my life", and I've always been one to follow my gut instincts about that sort of thing. Maybe when people on social media chill out and learns to live more peacefully, I'll come back.
In the meantime, I'll enjoy my time out here, more or less living in the past part time. It's a much more simpler era, that is until I have to come back to civilization for supplies and such. I wish I could find a way to stay this way permanently.

If you ever wonder how I go about patching the timeline, here's a rough idea of how my thought process works in written form:
Based on HW2 trailer, energy well panel can be seen in SL facility elevator so assume SL to be point of introduction for Mimic
SL split in 2 instances in Parlourverse: SL past non-game sets up intro of Afton to assume overarching antagonist role thru Lucian, SL game-ver follows Meera as Eggs Benedict
Cassie mentions dad had wrench, wrench matches panel, panel appears in Ruin and HW2âs SL
Float Cassie Dad from Meera-era SL to pre-employee purge SB, re-visit when HW2 releases
Mimic source?
Mimic AI contains data of all animatronics, mimicked Afton(?), learning by watching or assimilating (Elder Afton Remnant was destroyed by FuriRosa in PizzaSim location, Elizabeth salvaged the larger fragments of Emelia but needs to find data sources to recreate Elder Aftonâs memories and consciousness somehow (creates motive to want Mimic developed and learning from Afton data))
when was the most amount of data gathered to feed Mimic for Parlourverse? UCN
UCN arc location: underground SL facility, multiple entry points based on FNAF4/SL map overlay
Meeraâs original entry via Rental facility was destroyed, so UCN entry point must be someplace else (pizzeria? No, pizzeria appears to be same as the PizzaSim location, requires Henry intervention) Afton house? (could work, may have been abandoned by this point)
how did Router get in then? Track his movements from Fazbear Frights to SL facility, he escaped dispelling in FNAF4 arc and went looking for Lucianâs last location for revenge (cross-reference original timeline) (Emelia getting out created a tunnel that let Router in)
Elizabeth had all animatronics built from data stored in mainframe, same info was given to games division for HW and SD (she kept going back to the UCN location to salvage what she could of the animatronics, the ones made by Elder Afton would have data about him that she needs)
Mimic AI potentially emerged as a result of fusing all that data into a âparentâ node for programming behaviors in the games for the animatronics (mixed into all the parts scanned in were the original Afton made animatronics, allowing Mimic AI to assimilate data about Elder Afton)
servers holding it are locked with energy well panels while Elizabeth attempts to have it trained to focus on mimicking Elder Afton and ârestoreâ him
(where is master file? He escaped the facility during UCN arc with Elizabeth to be installed into Pizzaplex as the governing AI; a copy of him went into the games division server but was consumed by Mimic over time so Mimic now can mimic Lucian Master File (this is important because itâs a flawed mimic as MF removed things from himself that Digi retains))
So where is Mimic AI right now?
A.I. is housed in servers at game studio branch, producing coding for the SD animatronics. The game coding was scrubbed after Alex gained access to the source code and cut the network connection between it and the Mimic so he could quarantine it in-game and destroy the code.
Where is the Mimic animatronic? Trace back events to locate most probable period it could have been constructed and where, then path forward to determine where it ended up.
---------
That's as far as I got as my brain got distracted so now I have to sit and reel it back in and think about the mechanical part of the Mimic.

Navigating the Changing Landscape: Key Trends for Today's Job Seekers
The world of work is evolving rapidly due to technological, economic, and social shifts. For job seekers, this means new career opportunities but also new challenges. Tracking and understanding the latest trends is essential for job seekers to navigate the employment landscape effectively.
Recognizing these trends also allows employers to align their hiring practices with what today's candidates value most. This article will break down key developments shaping the experiences of job seekers in the modern era.
The Importance of Tracking Job Seeker Trends
Job seeker behaviors and priorities are not static. As the workforce and workplace culture changes over time, so do attitudes toward work. Ongoing trends reflect transformations in how people search for jobs, where they focus efforts, and what they expect from potential employers.
For job seekers, recognizing these trends allows tailoring of resumes, skills development, and more to align with employer priorities. When individuals showcase relevant skills and experiences sought by companies today, their candidacy becomes more competitive.
Key Job Seeker Trends to Follow
Technological Advancements Changing the Job Search Process
Online job boards like GradSiren increase accessible career opportunities for freshers and experienced candidates. Customized profiles allow matching with suitable roles.
Job seekers use job sites not just for listings but also for networking, company research, content sharing, and building an online professional brand.
AI plays an increasing role through resume screening, automated video interviews, and candidate evaluation algorithms. This provides efficiency but requires balancing human interaction.
Growing Popularity of Remote and Hybrid Work Models
Surveys consistently show over 75% of workers now want remote or hybrid work options. Many became accustomed to location flexibility during the pandemic.
Fully remote roles offer total flexibility. Hybrid arrangements blend on-site and remote work to balance benefits.
Companies insisting on fully in-office roles may struggle to attract applicants who desire flexibility.
Prioritizing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Today's job seekers closely evaluate a company's diversity, equity and inclusion efforts when considering roles. They prefer employers who demonstrate real action on raising DEI.
Offering benefits supporting marginalized groups, transparent diversity statistics, anti-bias training, and review of inequities signals commitment to progress.
Companies lagging on DEI initiatives will have a much smaller talent pool to recruit from amid increasing candidate scrutiny.
Growth of the Freelance "Gig Economy"
Over 35% of the U.S. workforce now participates in freelance "gig economy" roles, with projections of continued increase. The flexibility to choose one's projects and hours has great appeal.
Freelancing is a temporary income source while individuals search for traditional full-time employment.
However, gig roles often confer fewer employee benefits and protections. Unpredictable income also poses challenges for workers.
Emphasizing Continuous Skills Development
Today's candidates understand the need to continually gain new skills rather than remain static in one job long-term. Employers facilitating ongoing career development are most attractive.
Workers independently take online courses, earn certifications, and build capabilities not just to change jobs but also to progress within roles.
Companies providing upskilling support and defined paths for internal mobility have a competitive edge in recruiting.
Factors Influencing Changes in Job Seeker Attitudes
Economic Growth Cycles: In strong economies with low unemployment, applicants have more leverage and higher demands. Recessions reverse this dynamic.
Generational Differences: Younger Millennial and Gen Z job seekers have expectations shaped by the technological era they grew up in. Priorities differ from older generations.
Technological Disruption: Developments like AI recruiting tools, virtual reality practice interviews, wearables tracking applicant biometrics, and more will transform jobs seeker experiences.
Cultural Shifts in Attitudes About Work: Discussions around mental health, work-life balance, and flexibility lead employees to expect employers to provide a healthy work culture supporting well-being.
Persistent Challenges Facing Job Seekers Today
Intensely Competitive Job Market: The oversaturation of qualified applicants means intense competition for available openings. This job seeker struggle has intensified coming out of the pandemic.
Skills Mismatch Between Employers and Applicants: Employers frequently request qualifications exceeding what roles require. Meanwhile, applicants cannot develop skills fast enough to keep pace with demands.
Mental Health Impacts: The strain and uncertainty of job-seeking take a psychological toll. Financial duress and rejection worsen mental health issues. But taking time to recover risks being left behind.
Continued Discrimination and Bias: Despite diversity initiatives, marginalized groups still face substantial barriers to equal opportunities. Achieving systemic change remains gradual.
Looking Ahead: The Future Job Seeker Landscape
As cultural acceptance grows, insisting on fully on-site roles will severely limit applicant pools. Hybrid arrangements will likely become the norm, appealing to work-life balance priorities.
While momentum on DEI is building, much work remains to create equitable access to opportunities. This will continue gaining focus from socially conscious job seekers.
Developments in VR recruiting, expanded AI capabilities, biometrics tracking, and more will transform how job seekers interact with employers. Ensuring ethics around data use will be crucial.
As automation changes workplace skill demands, job seekers will need continuous learning opportunities throughout their careers. Companies investing in upskilling will lead the way.
Reduced stigma and increasing workplace burnout will compel employers to prioritize emotional well-being through new policies. A healthy work-life balance will attract top talent.
Conclusion
Tracking emerging trends among job seekers provides crucial insights into the evolving employment landscape. Both individuals looking for work and companies hoping to attract talent must recognize these developments and shifting expectations. Also, modern job boards like GradSiren are essential for today's job seekers. Their customizable searches and alerts notify you of new openings matching your qualifications and keywords so you can instantly find and apply for relevant opportunities.

Ecarden: Machinery of the Heavens
Ecarden is a very advanced and high-tech world, populated by a single biological sentient species self-named the engrath. Technically, there is also a bunch of sentient AI which was made in spite of the ban, but we will talk about those later. Despite a clear sci-fi focus, Ecarden has an unexpectedly vintage and even art deco look, with a great balance of urbanization and the preservation of nature as it is.
The entire Ecarden is divided into 22 autonomous cities called Districts, which in action are full-fledged states, forming together a strong alliance ruled by Ecardian Council. The common language, which was created at the beginning of the Era of Watchmaker, left all of the older languages in the past. However, each District possesses its own culture, laws, and general appearance. Power (except for the judiciary) belongs to the parliament and the Governor (aka the head of state), each elected for a five-year term.
And, perhaps the most important thingâŠ
Ecarden is a world, where there is a rightful God!
*** Main characters
The main events take place in the 4th District in the backdrop of a few sudden serious problems, hence the main characters: the God themself, the Clergyman of the 4th District, his assistant AI in a body of an android, as well as the Governor of the 4th District.
As a deity, Watchmaker can shapeshift to any form, however, they rarely use this ability, dwelling on the images familiar and tested by time.
Watchmaker is the creator of the universe, but not the origin of the life existing in it (appearance of which, by the way, had become a real surprise for them). Being a demiurge, they are not a "God" in the sense in which we are accustomed to using this word, and for this reason, they call themself Watchmaker by analogy to the profession of a master-creator of the time mechanisms. In Ecarden Watchmaker acts like a full-fledged patron of arts and sciences, who with their own free will is ready to help with the development of the world and provide assistance with technology. They're considered the "Blind God", which means that they aren't a deity reigning over the world and watching over everything and everyone, but rather simple architect who knows about what is happening from the interactions with the Clergymen, who are mediators and representatives of each District, the most outstanding engineers who create the most advanced technology under Watchmaker's guidance. As a patron, Watchmaker presents the most important discoveries and innovations to the public, participates in ceremonies (such as Governor's inauguration, for example), and leads the main holiday of Ecarden named Thanksgiving Day, giving parting words and wishes for the next year, while maintaining a festive atmosphere.
***
Even though Eve and the other employees of the Complex have their uniforms, mostly it isn't forbidden to wear casual clothes, which he does quite often.
Zhaneeve Hezenlight is a Clergyman of the 4th District, a talented engineer in several fields, and a little bit practicing bionic. Most call Zhaneeve simply Eve, including employees of the Complex themselves (not to mention his close social circle).
His duties, like any other Clergyman, include:
Application in the development technologies which already exist and solving current problems with their help;
Development of completely new technologies (optional);
Periodic reports to the Watchmaker about what is happening in the headed District.
In addition, as one of the most competent bionics, he is also responsible for carrying out the most serious and urgent prosthetic operations and, in fact, mechanization in these cases.
On paper, each Clergyman is the head of the Complex of their District, the research center in which most of all development is carried out. In reality, Clergymen are very busy people, and each Complex is led by its deputy, leaving only the most important issues to the Clergyman.
Positive and kindhearted, always young in his soul (and a bit like a fashionista) Eve does plastic surgeries twice as frequently as any other engrath, heâs nonetheless quite a responsible person and tries to lead Complex and all the work going on there in the best way possible.Â
***
Helper uses his small size and funny robotic look as an advantage. To display his emotions, he uses emoji or emoticons, sometimes reaching a completely absurd look.
Helper is an AI in Đ° body of an android. He was created by Zhaneeve and originally was planned as a simple robot for small assignments, but Eve's creative approach (and his reluctance to do everything "according to a template") led to an unexpected result â AI gained consciousness and an edgy personality.
Possessing highly doubtful morals and being an obvious nihilist, the outwardly sarcastic and unfriendly assistant is the complete opposite of his creator. Barely recognizing any kind of authority, he doesn't perceive Eve as his creator, and even less as his boss, and works with him in a cooperative on a basis more similar to that of a friend, which doesnât bother either of them as of yet.
Basically, Helper is something in between an omnipotent intelligence and a 7-year-old child (his real age), has his own Vlog, likes rap, and is quite good at it.Â
***
Dark clothes are quite rare for a visually light EŃarden, and yet Nahash approves only two colours in his clothes which are black and burgundy.
Nahash ĐĄerdes is a Governor of the 4th District. In general, heâs a rather serious and domineering man, one might even say harsh but he does an excellent job, for which he is very much loved by the townspeople. As the head of an almost full-fledged state, he bears a huge share of responsibility, and in practice also the entire executive power, which, however, doesn't bother him that much. He had changed his name and hides any true information about his past, had some traumatic experiences throughout his life that caused PTSD nightmares which make Nahash suffer from insomnia.
Officially, Eve is Nahash's personal bionic, who solves all issues regarding his mechanization, but in reality, these two are connected by a love affair something⊠more.
***
Character's voice canons
Saint Motel â Eat Your Heart Out
This song perfectly reflects cheerfulness, love for playing the guitar, and, to some extent, even Eve's philosophy.
Slide â See Thru Blue
Nahash's voice is usually a little bit more bassy, but he almost always talks to Eve in exactly this way.
Son Lux, Mitski, David Byrne - This Is A Life (male)
Watchmaker has an exceptionally polite manner of communication, as well as calm, measured speech. However, their voice changes slightly from time to time, similar to their appearance.
***
And finallyâŠ
Small typing of characters according to the lyric heroes from the song The Oh Hellos - Soldier, Poet, King, which isn't a canonical display of their professions, remains very indicative for understanding what all three of them are.

The Evolving Role of Human Resources in the Digital Age
In the digital age, where technology is reshaping industries and workforces, the Human Resources (HR) field is undergoing a transformative shift. HR professionals are no longer confined to traditional administrative tasks; they are becoming strategic partners, leveraging technology and data-driven insights to optimize talent management and drive organizational success. This article explores how Human Resources is evolving in the digital era, its challenges and opportunities, and the key strategies HR professionals must embrace to thrive in this dynamic landscape.
The Digital Transformation of HR
The digital revolution has dramatically impacted HR practices, streamlining various processes and introducing new methodologies. Human Resources Management Systems (HRMS) and Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) have become integral tools for managing employee data, recruitment, and performance evaluations. Additionally, cloud-based platforms enable remote collaboration and real-time analytics, empowering HR teams to make data-driven decisions.
Data-Driven Decision Making:Â With the abundance of data available, HR professionals now have access to valuable insights to optimize talent management. From predictive analytics for identifying high-potential employees to evaluating workforce diversity, data-driven decision-making helps HR foster a more inclusive and effective workplace.
Automation and AI:Â Routine administrative tasks like payroll processing and employee onboarding can now be automated, allowing HR professionals to focus on more strategic initiatives. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used for candidate screening, creating personalized learning paths, and predicting employee turnover.
Employee Experience and Engagement:Â Digital tools enable HR to enhance the employee experience by providing self-service portals, personalized learning modules, and real-time feedback mechanisms. Engaged employees are more likely to be productive and committed to the organization's mission.
Challenges in the Digital HR Landscape
Despite the transformative potential, the digital age presents some unique challenges for HR professionals.

Skills Gap and Training:Â The rapid pace of technological advancements has resulted in a skills gap, where employees' expertise may become outdated. HR must invest in training and upskilling initiatives to bridge this gap and keep the workforce competitive.
Balancing Technology with Human Touch:Â Technology can streamline processes but must be balanced with a human touch. HR professionals must balance digital interactions and maintaining a personal connection with employees.
Strategies for Thriving in the Digital HR Landscape
To harness the full potential of digital transformation, HR professionals can adopt the following strategies:
Embrace Digital HR Solutions:Â Implementing HRMS, ATS, and other digital tools can simplify processes, enhance efficiency, and provide valuable insights.
Develop Data Analytics Expertise:Â HR professionals should build their analytics capabilities to extract meaningful insights and inform strategic decisions.
Prioritize Employee Experience:Â Designing a positive employee experience that aligns with the organization's values and culture will foster engagement and retention.
Embrace Agile Work Practices:Â Adopting agile work practices enables HR teams to respond swiftly to changing needs and opportunities.
Invest in Continuous Learning:Â Encourage a culture of continuous learning and upskilling to equip employees with the necessary competencies for the digital age.
As the digital age reshapes the business landscape, Human Resources is evolving from a traditional administrative function to a strategic partner. Embracing digital solutions and data analytics and focusing on employee experience are critical components of this transformation. While challenges like data privacy and balancing technology with human touch exist, HR professionals can thrive in the digital HR landscape by adopting proactive strategies and staying attuned to the ever-changing needs of the workforce.
