Daniel presenting Betty with a Blobby award in 4x13 reminds me of Andrew Garfield describing Emma Stone
Daniel: “Betty is a force of nature. A positive one, like sunshine, but a force nonetheless. I think we’re all very lucky to have her shining on us…”
Andrew: “She was like a shot of expresso. She was like being bathed in sunlight…”
Can you say endgame?

The last day of the Faire, the sky was overcast, with rumbles of thunder in the far distance. As Mayor Nat stepped up to the podium set up in front of town hall, a small crowd gathered to hear the announcement. She proceeded to declare Pandora Flowers as the winner of the costume contest, and withdrew the sword to present to the winner of the tournament, Morgan Vovk.
Before she could, though, Quinn Buckley from the commune ran up on stage and grabbed the microphone from the podium.
“Listen! You have to listen. This, all of this, is because of a being far greater than us! It sent the creatures from the woods to test us! To separate the weak from the strong. It judges us because it wants us to be ready before it reveals itself. We have to listen! We have to—“
Sheriff Henry attempted to take the microphone from her, but she struggled against him, still shouting into the microphone.
“It’s real! I felt its presence! Those that listen will be saved!”
Thunder rumbled, closer than before, much closer. A loud crack of lightning illuminated the sky, blindingly bright. Beyond the clouds, briefly visible in that split second, loomed a shape, unrecognizable and massive, both bulbous and gangly. As quickly as it appeared it was gone, and what remained was the sizzling body of Tristan Wilde, struck by the lightning. The sky opened up, then, as thunder boomed directly above, and rain and hail pelted the town.
“It’s there! You all saw it! It’s real! We have to submit!” Quinn wailed, as Henry attempted to pull her off the stage. “I can prove it! I can walk amongst them untouched! I’ve been chosen! You can be chosen too!”
Her cries fell away in the deafening downpour, and those that had gathered scattered to find shelter in the nearest buildings. Whether or not they saw something or, if they did, if they believe what they saw, remains to be seen.
The storm raged on through the night, as the creatures wandered the streets unperturbed by the rain and hail. The lights of the town flickered and then, as lightning staggered across the sky, everything went dark.
(Those that ran to find shelter found themselves stuck for the night. Below you’ll find the (randomly selected) groups. You can choose for your characters to have seen the shape in the sky, to have not seen it, or to have seen it and not believe it.
Everyone can continue/finish their event threads, as all this took place on the final day of the Faire (the 29th). You may also time-jump threads, headcanon threads, or make new threads for the plot drop. The event officially ends on August 5th, at which time please do not make any more event starters, however you can continue all threads until completion.)

Part 1
Mark bangs his head against the wall behind him, once twice, a third time. The thumps somehow coincide with the tick of the second hand on the wall clock across from him. He guesses that it makes sense. Coach Suarez has always said he has good rhythm, that it helps him to time his breaths well.
Head a little sore, he pauses, but the pent up energy coursing through his body finds its escape through his foot this time, the good one. He counts in his head, while exhaling. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. He takes in a deep breath through his mouth. He starts again. One. Two. Three. Fo—
“Mr Everest?” His foot tapping comes to an abrupt halt as he looks up at the young lady standing with a clipboard in the walkway. She looks a bit familiar, young enough to be a student worker. Maybe they’ve done a class together. He searches through the files of old class registers in his brain to see if he can come up with her name.
She seems to take his lack of response as acknowledgment enough or maybe it’s because he’s literally the only person waiting. Whichever one it is, she motions to the office with her head, “Ms Lewis will see you now.”
He nods, pressing both hands into the arm rests to propel him out of his seat. He groans at the exertion and he doesn’t have to look at the girl behind him— Emma, his brain provides in triumph— to know that she’s offering him a look of pity. He avoids facing the look head on by turning to pick up the crutches leaning against the wall beside his chair. Fitting one under each arm, he makes sure they're comfortable before he looks up again.
The look is still there, but he’s had enough time to school his features into a mask of mild gratitude. He offers her a small smile that he’s sure looks more like a grimace as he hobbles towards Ms Lewis’ office door.
“Thanks, Emma.”
The look she gives him is more shell-shock than pity now. Maybe she didn’t expect him to speak. She nods jerkily before ducking her head and hightailing it back to her desk. He suspects it’s more that she didn’t expect him to know her name. He doesn’t know why, people always seem to be surprised when he remembers their names. It’s one of his talents, alongside a 55 second 100m freestyle. Except, maybe now it’s his only talent, what with the whole crutches and foot in a cast situation. He wonders if there’s an education fund out there that would give him a scholarship for that ability.
Ms Lewis’ door is only slightly ajar. He stares at the gold plate hung on it with her name carved in and steels himself for what’s to come. He counts again, inhaling as he goes. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Then he lets it out slowly. One. Two. Three. Four. Five.
It doesn’t get rid of all the tension in his shoulders, but he supposes that this is the best it’s going to get. So he taps on the door with a crutch, his attempt at knocking, and pushes it open after he hears the resulting, “Come in!”
“Good morning.” His greeting is as subdued as his mood.
Despite this, Ms Lewis offers him a friendly smile and Mark really tries to return it. Something in the softening in her eyes tells him that he’s not fooling her.
“Good morning, Mr Everest.”
She gestures to the chair opposite her, but it’s pushed under the desk. With one hand occupied by holding the single crutch supporting his body weight, he struggles to pull the heavy chair out with his other hand. Before he can even let out a sound of frustration, Ms Lewis is up and pulling the chair out for him.
“Thanks,” his voice is quiet as he lowers himself into the seat.
She waves a dismissive hand and offers him another smile, but his expression stays neutral this time. This is not Ms Lewis’ fault, but he still doesn’t have to be happy about this situation. They stare across the table at each other for a beat and Mark tries not to squirm.
“So…” she begins and his heart rate is already picking up in anticipation of what he knows will be bad news. “I think we should just get straight to it.”
Mark nods and Ms Lewis picks up a folder on her desk, before opening it and sliding it towards him.
“So I’ve read through the terms of your scholarship again and it’s clear. Even though your grades haven’t suffered as a result of your accident, you have to be engaged in a school-sanctioned extra-curricular activity.”
Mark glances at the document in front of him, the terms of the agreement arranged in a neat list and his and the bursar's signatures ascribed to the bottom.
He huffs a sigh of defeat.
“Will they at least let me finish the semester?”
Ms Lewis shakes her head. “I'm afraid not. The stipulation is that you have one month after the report has been sent in to provide evidence of change.”
Mark physically deflates, but Ms Lewis goes on, “I’ve spoken to Coach Suarez about your return…” she pauses to acknowledge the dubious look that Mark is sure is etched on his face. “Yes…well…I wanted to know all our options.” She shrugs. “Because of the nature of your injury…” she gestures to his cast, “she said it would be disingenuous for her to mark you as participating since… forget competing, you wouldn’t even be able to participate in any of the practices.”
Mark’s head falls into his hands. He doesn’t have the energy for this today.
“Fortunately, all is not lost.” Mark's head snaps up at the promising tone Ms Lewis has taken. Despite his best efforts, hope swells in his chest.
“At this time of year, not many clubs are willing to admit a new member.”
“I understand.” Mark takes a deep breath as his eyes fall to his folded hands. He forces the fingers on his right hand to stop picking at his cuticles and he takes a deep breath. He needs to brace himself for the devastating news. One. Two. Thr—
“I did some digging.”
Mark’s eyes are still fixed in his lap. He starts again. One. Two. Thre—
“You have two choices.”
He holds his breath.

Notes from Outlook for Economics Job Market 2023-24 NABE
06/10/2023
Jeff Ferris, Senior Manager and Economist, Amazon
Shilpi Mukherjee, Senior Economist, Keystone Strategy
Gustavo Suarez, Assistant Director, Division of Research and Statistics, Federal Reserve Board
Shalyce Tyson, Human Resources Specialist and Recruitment Coordinator, U.S. Census Bureau
Moderator: Emma Zetterdahl, Senior Manager, Economics Research, Spotify Advertising
This was actually a really helpful panel, hosted by mostly economists and people really close to economics research. I liked that they had a mix of people in consulting, tech and the government, and they gave a good picture of industry research in general. Specifically, attendees learned what skills private industry and the government are looking for in an economist.
Consulting and tech seem to be looking for causal, IO and time series at the moment. There is room for micro and macro theorists but they often tend to have some special skill that is related to working with data. They were clear that working with datasets seems to be the daily responsibility of most newly hired economists in industry and government. Machine learning and working with data are great skills to have now, and should be highlighted briefly either on the CV or with a link to a project on github. There was some discussion on making sure we show we are clearly practiced at thinking about economics problems and not just working with data, but I think the key takeaway is to be good at both.
Causal and structural estimation are critical since places in industry tend to have big data, and there is a lot of scope for different analyses. Structural is important to sort of pare down the question. Causal is the most generalizable.
For PhD versus MA, the opportunities are slightly different. Many times the economist role seems to be defined for someone who has a PhD. There are roles for MA students (e.g. survey statistician at the Census, data scientist at Amazon), but the idea for the economist position is to hire someone who has done some rigorous thesis work.
So what does the job look like for a new economist? In consulting, you'll be working with a supervisor on some project and performing some analysis that is assigned to you. This tends to be very technical and usually involves working with data. As you work your way up, you begin identifying the problems and choosing the problems. At the top, you decide broader direction in terms of which types of analyses work and which don't. In tech, you'll be handed a variety of tasks with little ambiguity to simply execute until you work up. Once you have more responsibility, you yourself might start scoping projects that have some more ambiguity. The more leadership you have, the more ambiguous the problems become. As you become a leader you become someone who chooses the direction.
The general consensus seems to be that as a fresh economist you'll be working on problems that have been identified and defined by someone else. Once you become a leader, you become the one to define the problems.
Hiring process: (1) In tech there are two phases. First, a phone screen, walking through a set of technical problems. Next, some more technical questions, questions on aptitude for leadership and how you approach problem solving. Don't bring up your job market paper as much for tech. They want to see how well you can approach a new problem (2) At the census: Submit resume and get certificate. Interview. (3) In consulting, specifically at keystone. First, there is a technical portion and you often discuss your job market paper. Next, there is an on-site interview. You might look over some technical problems with some company leadership. There is a behavioral portion as well. (4) At the Fed, you often start with AEA interviews. From there you receive flyouts. You present your job market paper, talk to the other economists there. They want to see your technical skills and communication abilities.
Overall, a very informative panel! A thank you to all the panelists who provided the information.
