I completed Anne Brontë's Agnes Grey in one day yesterday. I'm in a book hangover, but here are my initial thoughts on the novel, as well as on Anne:
- Anne is an underrated Queen, but I already knew that from The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, her second novel. If only she hadn't died at 29! Agnes Grey was her first foray into novel publishing, and proves how much she developed her talents in the interim between itself and Tenant, which most people would agree is much better.
Yet, for a debut novel, Grey is nevertheless impressive. Her acute observations and descriptions of social experiences are some of the most clear I've ever read, and she was as adept in her satire as Jane Austen. After reading both her novels, Emily's only, and more than one of Charlotte's (Jane, and currently 1/4 through Villette) I can say she's certainly the most moral and progressive Brontë, and maybe even the most socially intelligent. There's a lot of humor in this book, and despite some of the dark themes, it never feels miserable.
Anne was a remarkably resolute woman, which comes through in both her heroines; even when they are oppressed and trapped in the most dire situations, they consciously refuse to adopt a victim mindset, instead trusting in their own strength and resilience. After enduring much suffering, both heroines trust in their faith, focus their energy on creating good lives for themselves, and by doing so achieve happiness in the end.
Anne Brontë's heroines are true examples of female stoics in the original philosophical sense, capable of great empathy and feeling as well as self-control and self-discipline. The Anne Brontë heroine has a quiet confidence about her. She champions moderation and common sense, not because she is boring or easily written off by the misogynistic epithet of "prude," but because she has witnessed true chaos and experienced true misery, and these things have served to make her more calm because she does not internalize them but triumphs over them. She has decided to learn from life's lessons and seek a life of tranquility, simplicity, and faith.
- This novel has everything! We've got the (literally designated) not-so-reformed rake in Sir Thomas Ashby (and what a rakish name that is), we've got some demonic children, we've got a sexy country parson, religious discourse, depictions and poignant criticism of classism, sexism, marriage, animal abuse, etc.
- Mr. Hatfield is basically Mr. Collins from P&P. Matilda rejecting him was golden.
-- The beginning of this novel, summarized: "I can't wait to meet these amazing children I've heard so much about! Gee, I really hope they aren't sociopathic animal torturers! What are the odds, am I right?"
-- No wonder the Brontë's didn't succeed in setting up their own school -- being a governess or teacher was simply horrible back then, as it largely still is today, and I think for the most part some of them simply weren't cut out for the job to begin with -- which is saying nothing bad about them or their abilities. Maybe if they lived today they would have done well as teachers or professors with a little more modern structure and having workers rights, etc...
-- I like the short length of this novel! It goes by very fast, and I read the first 100 pages or so myself very quickly, and the rest in audiobook format, but this is very rare for me. I've become accustomed to the Brontë family "language." I'm glad I didn't start with this novel though; I think it's easier to appreciate Agnes Grey after reading their "greatest hits" (Tenant, Jane, and Heights). It definitely isn't my favorite Brontë novel but then again I don't have a favorite. They each fulfill slightly different functions yet have many overlapping themes, so it's difficult to rank them.
-- I think one of the reasons this novel may not be as popular as it could be is because the first half of the novel is generally bleak and this may cause people to give up. The narrator's life generally improves in the second half of the novel, but still, Grey does not have as much dramatic "umph" as does what I hereby dub the "Brontë Greatest Hits Triad" (Heights/Tenant/Jane) which all will prefer. Still, the novel is worth reading for any Brontë fans as it is good and contains many of the Brontë tropes we all know and love. It also stands as a marked contrast to Anne's second novel The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, and makes me appreciate that novel so much better.

This is broadly true, but I just want to add a couple of caveats to it, as these assessments always do the dirty on at least one side (as I’m doubtless about to do to the Brontës, but hopefully only to a small amount.)
Not only were Austen and the Brontës writing at different times, they were writing in a completely different *context*. Yes, they were both women, and yes they were both the children of parsons, but Patrick Brunty was an Irish immigrant (against which group there was prejudice) who worked as a curate in a remote, rural parish and had a houseful of children. George Austen, was a rector, and although not wealthy, was part of the lower gentry, and had connections and family across various genteel families across the south of England - and through her brothers she had access to a wide social circle. Even when her family were impoverished, Austen’s great fear and horror was of having to work as a governess, but her straits never became that desperate. Not only did Charlotte and Anne both work as governesses, Charlotte certainly also worked as a school teacher (I know at least one other sister did, but can’t remember off the top of my head.) Austen was sent (if only briefly) to Reading Abbey Girls’ School - a fairly prestigious establishment. The Brontës attended the Cowan Bridge school as ‘charity children.’
What I’m saying is, Austen was specifically higher up the social ladder than the Brontës, she moved in different circles and had vastly different life experiences. Her experience of stately homes was as a guest - not the most illustrious one - and she received a proposal from Harris Big-Wither, who was the heir to extensive estates. Now, this would have been a very advantageous match for her, and perhaps ‘better’ than she could have expected given her social position, but it was not by any means unfitting, or shocking. This is not to say she wouldn’t have encountered snobbery because of her rank, or relative poverty in her circle, and she absolutely had a match with a man she cared for deeply forestalled because neither of them were wealthy enough to support it. BUT, she was very much a part of that world - in a way the Brontës were not.
The Brontë’s’ experience of those circles were as employees, or poor relations - at least until after the publication of Jane Eyre, in any case, by which point Emily and Anne were dead.
Politically, as well, the environment was very different. Austen was writing at a time of enormous social conservatism- especially in her class of people - in the aftermath of the French Revolution, when being visibly subversive was quite dangerous to someone’s prospects, not just maritally but in terms of career. This threat was very present not just in the Revolution and the Napoleonic war, but also in the Romantic movement, and it’s challenge to the sexual and marital mores of the time. Meanwhile, a lot of social energy was going in to extreme and conflicting worldviews around questions like Empire and Abolition, the birth of Capitalism (this is a simplification) and the Protestant Work Ethic, ‘Enlightenment Philosophy’ and the cult of Sensibility, the industrial revolution and its impacts, and religious non-conformity. Meanwhile, ideas of ‘decency’ and ‘propriety’ were being thrown to the winds by the sexual behaviour not only of radicals like the Romantics, but also of the aristocracy - and crucially, the royal family.
In terms of the literary background, of course Romanticism and the cult of Sensibility were very present, also present were novels of Terror - the formation of the Gothic as a genre. In the context of all this, I always feel it’s important to consider Austen not as a reactionary or a conservative, but a realist. She was writing satirical, social realism *against* the excesses of thought and behaviour she saw around her, knowing how personally dangerous those feelings could be. Austen is very concerned with what each individual in a situation can *afford* to do, or express, or accept, or reject.
She also, I suspect, saw a lot of silliness, as young people around her ‘tried on’ the personas of Gothic Heroine, or Romantic Firebrand in very inappropriate circumstances, as well as a handful who risked ruining their lives in that way - and knew not only how ridiculous it could be, and also how very much they had to lose, by mistaking where they stood, or what the odds really looked like. What I’m sort of getting at is that while Austen *was* concerned about virtue, and propriety - she was far more interested in writing social realism, and the incredible dangers of getting it wrong. As someone who had lost a great deal of material comfort and security, someone who only tenuously remained part of the only world to which her education had prepared her to belong, I think she observed very acutely not the world as it should be, or could be in imaginings - but rather as it was - and then imagined possible happiness within that world. But the eternal caveat is there as a warning in the adults and side characters - unless your standing and wealth are beyond any possible criticism, in the upper middle class world Austen inhabited, you only get one roll of the dice. Her heroines cannot afford idealism.
Yet they exercise it anyway. I also always find it very interesting when people quote that, “it is vain to be satisfied tranquility…” quote when comparing the Charlotte Brontë to Austen, when that is, quite literally, the crux both of more than one Austen novel - particularly Mansfield Park - and her own life. @warrioreowynofrohan notes that Austen takes it for granted that women will want to marry - but it’s important to remember that Austen herself did not ever marry, despite the enormous financial pressure to do so. Because Austen more than anyone is aware what a ‘bad match’ brings, and is pretty straightforward about the drunkenness, infidelity, emotional abuse, cruelty, neglect, and (again, in Mansfield Park) domestic abuse that can happen if someone marries ‘unwisely’. In fact, within the boundaries of her genre, she’s pretty straightforward about a lot of stuff, hidden under diffident and satirical language around seduction, spousal abuse, poisonous home environments. In Northanger Abbey there is more than a hint that General Tilney is physically as well as emotionally abusive to his children and late wife (or has been historically) and I am always convinced Fanny and Edmund covertly discuss the possibility of Mary having been sexually abused - but that’s a theory not a certainty.
What she wants for her heroines is less propriety than suitability, not just in temperament but in possible future. She cannot and never will condone the type of match that leads, for example, to people losing their friends, family, inheritances, or simply social standing, because that inevitably leads to resentment, and possibly abuse. (I feel like this is the key around Mr Elton and Harriet, not just that Emma is a snob, but that they both would have been made to suffer for it socially, in a way that would have been unbearable to them both.) This may sound sort of silly, or reactionary, but… in Austen’s world, miracles don’t happen - that’s not her genre. Plucky, good-hearted girls cannot overturn the social order simply through virtue and kindness. The beautiful girl who marries the dashing sailor has to deal with poverty and discomfort when he is invalided out - he doesn’t save an admiral and get a commission.
Whereas the Brontës were writing in the Gothic genre, where exceptional cruelty, implied or directly alluded to rape, seduction, and ‘shocking’ subjects such as illegitimacy, violence, murder, suicide, incest, etc, were all far more acceptable fodder. I’m not saying that they didn’t deal with them in remarkable, new, or groundbreaking ways - but stuff like Udolpho, The Monk, Mathilda had this as their stock in trade. Charlotte and Emily (I don’t know Anne’s work so well) were also writing in a broadly Romantic tradition, which meant that great declarative expressions of non-conformity, resistance, and strangeness were… sort of expected. Again, I’m not saying what they did with it wasn’t remarkable… but it doesn’t strictly make them more progressive than Austen, because again as @warrioreowynofrohan says, it’s a false comparison. The Victorian Gothic (and the earlier Gothic, but slightly less so) gives a space for the impossible desire of the heart to be met, for the miracle to occur. Rochester and Jane are able to marry *not* with her marrying up in to his class, but her suddenly coming in to a living which allows them to live in hers. Cathy the second and Hareton can marry and settle their generational trauma (perhaps - perhaps not) and restore innocence to Wuthering Heights.
In direct opposition to Northanger Abbey, where the very idea is dismissed as grotesque, Rochester literally has his wife locked up in the attic.
As such, there is space for violence, and vehemence, and wish fulfilment, without the complicated social consequences which Austen would inevitably have seen in all these situations, because she was acutely aware of how all the tiny permutations of rank, wealth, fashion, and connection shaped her characters’ ability to live in a social world, and the embarrassment, difficulty, and inability to cope that came about when it was changed.
(And I will say that both Lizzie, and to a lesser extent Jane *do* marry up, although not dramatically so. The title ‘gentleman’ covers a variety of sins - their father is of a similar, if slightly higher class/less wealth and fashion than Bingley, and notably lower than Darcy, who has noble relations. Their mother is a merchant’s daughter. The whole book is about the consequences of their father marrying ‘down’, and the difficulty that causes in their ability to marry ‘up’ or even on the level. Until he inherits Longbourne, Mr Collins would be a step down for both of them.)
(I could also write a whole big essay about the morality in Mansfield Park through this lens cos I fucking love that book, but I’ve gone on long enough. Loved the above comment in general, sorry to be a pedant.)
every day I log onto tumblr dot com and I have to see people claiming charlotte bronte wasn't a feminist unlike their totally unproblematic fave jane austen and I am physically unable to grab them by the shoulders and giving them a good shake and it makes me real sad

what i find particularly remarkable about emily brontë is that she was exceptionally religious- so much of her poetry, for instance, focuses more on the idea of mystical union with God than it does anything romantic or even very human in nature- “no coward soul is mine” is, truly, at its heart, a mystical or even metaphysical poem:
There is not room for Death Nor atom that his might could render void Since thou art Being and Breath And what thou art may never be destroyed.
a number of scholars have falsely said that emily was too individualistic and therefore, too pagan, to be properly qualified as a christian mystic (mildred dobson specifically), but its a fairly ignorant understanding of mysticism: mysticism is inward searching that opens out into the divine all, which is God, and most mystics- most women mystics- certainly (and almost universally) had individualistic and pagan elements to their spirituality, hence why they were continually under scrutiny as heretics or blasphemers, and their writing frequently takes on an apologetic quality, in that it is explaining the validity and sanctity of their inward experiences with the divine with the aim of disproving accusations of heresy.
mysticism is what gives us the answer of how a painfully reclusive and unusual young woman, raised in a rural manse by an anglican parson, could produce something as brutal, demonic, and absurd was wuthering heights. emily is apart from her sisters not in genius but in content: since charlotte and anne drew from personal experience for their work, from where does emily gain her inspiration? from mysticism, because it is mysticism that allows us union with both divine and demonic in equal measure- female mysticism is not particularly beautiful or feminine, it is brutal and bloody and inherently exceptionally erotic. it is julian of norwich seeing christ bathed in his own blood, teresa of avila being pierced by a seraph’s spear, angela of foligno drinking from christ’s wound, catherine of siena having her heart replaced with christ’s own.
catherine’s declaration that “whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same” is a mystic’s statement. but it is a mysticism in the perverse, something absurd and bataillean, because catherine rejects heaven in favour of earthly union, and finds herself inimitably tied to heathcliff- whose name and “demonic” descriptors make him a creature entirely, bound to the earth. but this does not denote a pagan mysticism: it is merely an extension of that what is, proof of bataille’s statement that the desires of the saint and the voluptuary are one and the same: to be consumed in such totality that there is no boundary between self and other.
