Guiding Emily Premieres: Friday, September 8 at 9 pm ET/PT Synopsis: Emily (Grey’s Anatomy’s Sarah Drew) sees her life veer off course after an accident leaves her permanently blind and she struggles to cope with her new reality. Meanwhile, a potential guide dog named Garth (voiced by Will & Grace’s Eric McCormack) faces his own struggles in the training department. With Garth by her side Emily takes on her biggest challenge yet, opening her heart. Blood & Treasure’s Anthony Cupo and Nancy Drew’s Sharon Taylor also star.
Haunted Harmony Mysteries: Murder in G Major Premieres: Friday, September 22 at 9 pm ET/PT Synopsis: Former orchestra conductor Gethsemane Brown (Sister, Sister’s Tamera Mowry-Housley) moves to the Irish countryside to teach music at a boarding school. Oh, did we mention that Eamon’s actually a ghost hot to solve his murder? Supernatural’s Adam Fergus also stars.

Mystery Island Premieres: Friday, September 29 at 9 pm ET/PT Synopsis: London Police psychiatrist Dr. Emilia Priestly (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Elizabeth Henstridge) needs to take a relaxing break from her stressful job, so her wealthy friend invites her to Mystery Island, an immersive murder-mystery-themed resort hosting a special retreat for the original investors. Viewing itinerary.
My winter break began on December 7, 2024, and will conclude on January 6, 2025. Within that time, I have watched an unhealthily excessive amount of television.
I began my break my marathoning the entirety of The Boys, a television series created by Eric Kripke that turns the superhero genre on its head, presenting superheroes as hedonistic, amoral abominations whose capacity to amplify human suffering is unmatched due to their unnatural abilities. The show was, to put it mildly, pure heroin. I devoured all of it, despite some creative lapses in the characterization and story taking place near the end. Plot contrivances and questionable writing choices could not, however, overcome the overall solid execution of a brilliant premise.
Once I had watched all extant seasons, my life become purposeless, droll, and I had to find new ways to self-entertain. Thus, in the following order, I watched these films: Emilia Pérez, a 2024 musical centering on the experiences of a Mexican transgender former cartel sicario directed by Jacques Audiard; two 2007 Westerns, the genre-defying adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men by the Coen brothers, and Paul Thomas Anderson's tale of avarice, There Will Be Blood; Conclave, a 2024 thriller mystery by Edward Berger depicting a tumultuous papal conclave; Elizabeth, the 1998 biopic depicting the ascendancy and early reign of Elizabeth I, Queen of England and Ireland; Pulp Fiction, Quentin Tarantino's sophomore film from 1994; and Nosferatu, this year's unsurprisingly mediocre adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula.
