He gave pause to actually think about her words, it's only respectable for a productive conversation when you try to see the others perspective, but still he shook his head with a light shrug, "not really, I've served my country, I'm pursuing a dream career, I think I've lived." Perhaps without the context of having to accept his potential death at a young age, it was hard to explain that feeling to her. He was prepared to die for years and to be prepared to face death, he had to be content with life first, and he was.

Ashton wasn't entirely sure what was happening as she continued to talk, "thank... you?" His reply slow and hesitant, body tensing up uncomfortably at the hand to his knee though he did his best to hide it well, what is one suppose to reply to that? "I'm not joining Sada's club or whatever that is though if that's what you're saying," he had to put it out there.. just in case this was another one of Sada's games she's trying to play with him. But despite all that, she did indeed have some profound words to share of her own, to which Ashton did soften his tone and replied in earnest, "I won't, thank you for the... um, sound advice. One to bring into the new year I guess." If anything he could at least meet one of her requirements he wouldn't mind a road trip out to a new stargazing location, one to put in his to do list for the year.

He could see the light at the end of the tunnel to be left alone again as her friends came up to her, hopefully pulling her attention away from him. "Oh- uh.." he didn't have a good excuse to worm his way out of this situation, he was not prepared for these, and so Ashton let's himself get pulled up to his feet for whatever picture they wanted to take, "okay.. sure, I guess." A corner of his lips tried to at least pull into a small smile, hoping to hide the awkwardness before the camera snapped. "That good enough?"

Eyes following his hand as he pointed to the door, her brows furrowed in confusion. She couldn't just leave, so much rested on tonight and the exposure, and really it was one of the few times a year their family spent... sort of together. Besides, who just left a party like that?

Those same furrowed brows gradually rose higher and higher as he spoke, taken a little aback by the near constant stream of pessimism that she'd ever heard in her entire life. "Isn't that like... exhausting, though? Always like... expecting the worst thing and being all on edge for it? Okay, like.... say the world ended tomorrow... sure you'd be prepared to stay alive... but would you have lived?"

Lifting her glass to clink it against his own and taking a little sip, Ember sighed and shook her head. "You're so cute, and you could go far with... all of this you have going on..." Motioning to all of him, she let her free hand fall onto his knee with a light slap. "There's so much more to life than doom and gloom and what-ifs. What's the point of it if you can't enjoy it? See the world, see the stars from different places, meet different people, taste different foods. I hope you don't just hide away all the time. It's a shame to keep that face all to yourself."

Locking a little wink on him, Ember moved to stand up, brushing any untoward wrinkles from the front of her dress as she composed herself back into her social media personality as her friends started to come over with their cameras. "Oh! We should take a picture together!"

SABAA TAHIR’S NEW BOOK HAS A TITLE, RELEASE DATE, SYNOPSIS AND A COVER.

Oh, and the AEITA and ATATN got revamped covers as well! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. One might ask why though, because there’s no denying that the old ones were gorgeous. WEll, Tahir shared in an Q/A with Mashable that there have been discussions about new covers, and that she really wanted to see Laia at them.

“I really wanted a to see a brown girl on these covers. And I wanted her in a position of power. How often have I seen book covers with a hero dead center? All the time. But how often is that hero a POC? Not often enough. I wanted this beautiful brown girl to be in that classic hero’s pose — center stage, looking right at you, like a badass.”

As a white person, I can’t comprehend just how important it is to see oneself represented on the covers of the books you love, because I do it all the time. But I do know how important good representation is and with these books, Tahir now doesn’t only do it with the story but also the covers and oh gods, I love it. READ THESE BOOKS EVERYONE. Even if you won’t do it for the glorious diversity, do it for the awesomeness that is the story. Because it’s SO DARN GOOD. Ready to see the new covers? (You probably already have, but just in case you haven’t.) HERE THEY ARE.

I’m usually not a fan of seeing characters on the cover, but this is definitely an exception. I AM IN LOVE WITH THESE NEW COVERS. And yes, I will find a way to justify owning more than one copy of AETIA and ATATN. SO BEAUTIFUL I WANT TO CRY.

I’m almost done screaming about this, but first, the summary.

Her response was slightly perplexing to Ash, eyebrows furrowed with confusion, shrugging at her question back, knowing how he'd answer himself, he could be doing so many better things compared to being at a party. But maybe it's just a life he didn't understand. And perhaps he never will. Still, he continued that line of thought, pointing out to the front door that led out to a quiet peaceful night while the snow fell, "but what's really stopping you from just.. walking out of this party?" Ash could probably do the same and he will, but since he already got himself tangled up into this by mistake, might as well enjoy the free alcohol.

Ash let her push his shoulder, not really budging much from it, "at least I'll aim to live." Being in a past job that had your life constantly at risk, had him simply appreciating being able to live day by day. Sometimes, surviving was enough. Though he didn't expect her to understand and so he didn't elaborate. "Interesting... analogy, but okay," he shifted slightly in his seat, "just staying prepared for the worst case scenario for the year." Anything could happen really, tomorrow the world could end and no one would see it coming. Between a glass half full and a glass half empty perspective, Ashton was always more of a there's water in the glass and what can they do with it kinda guy, a realist.

"Ah, so you're a fashion designer?" Ashton didn't know much about the Wexleys and for good reason. Tobias was the extent of who he knew in the family and Ash preferred to keep it that way. "Sounds like a year to look forward to," he raised his glass, "to your perfume and fashion line this year." Not that her products will ever be within his sights, interest or price range. "And uh.. your highlights."

"What else would I do?" His question caught her off guard, and it was obvious just from the expression on her face that idea of just not going hadn't even crossed her mind. Between her social media presence, her tabloid presence, and her social circles, not attending a party could mean social suicide. "I mean, I couldn't get out of this party even if I wanted to, it's like tradition or whatever. My parents love throwing it." It was really the only time she ever saw her mother invested in the building at all, but her father always seemed to buzz with the idea of giving a night of Christmas spirit to all their tenants.

"Survive? Pfft. that doesn't even sound like fun." What some might have seen a dismissive statement, was spoken with obvious jest, a hand reaching out to give a playful push at this shoulder with her finger tips. "Good work in that optimism. If all you think about and worry about is all the icky bad stuff, then that's all you're gunna notice. It's like... trying to see the DJ through the crowd if you put yourself at the back of it." She'd even managed to have fun at the fyre festival, but even for her it had been a struggle.

"Oh! I'm launching my own perfume brand and we're hoping to expand my fashion line to Europe. Fingers cross." Holding up her hand in demonstration, her pride in 'her' accomplishments practically pouring from her. "That and I was thinking highlights. You know... just around my face."
