A Random M*A*S*H Episode Idea: Pickles
Tumblr media
M*A*S*H Masterlist
Full credit to my sister for brainstorming this with me. I thought it would be fun to share.
This would be an early season episode, I'd say season 2
Basic premise is the USO tour is coming through so all the guys are excited, but the nurses not so much
While it is entertaining, the tour is decidedly not for them and so most of them are opting out to skip it; Margaret and Liz leading the charge on it
This leads to the nurses trying to figure out what to do for their entertainment, when Liz comes up with an idea
Men can have an opinion on most anything, but Hawkeye Pierce is the first man she's met who has an opinion on *everything*
It starts very simple; she expresses that she's not a fan of pickles
Hawkeye is shocked, how can a woman from Philadelphia not like pickles?
Liz claims that she likes them fine, but she doesn't love them
Hawkeye is insistent that she just hasn't had a good pickle
Liz counters that she's from Philadelphia, she's had a good pickle
Hawkeye is incensed by this, but their argument is cut short before they can continue
Liz then confidently walks over to the nurses and says, "your entertainment for the evening ladies, if Captain Pierce asks you if you like pickles, no you don't"
Leading up to the USO tour coming through Hawkeye then proceeds to question every woman in camp about pickles to which all of them say, they're not a fan
This starts to drive him crazy, and introduced the B-Plot of the episode of Radar trying to land a date
Hawkeye promises to help if Radar can get a jar of good pickles to camp so he can prove once and for all that pickles are great
Various shenanigans ensue; Margaret also lying to Frank about the pickle situation because she knows he can't keep a lid on it and psychologically torturing Hawkeye is the most fun she's had a in a while
Radar having to jump through various hoops to get a jar of pickles to the unit
Trapper trying and failing to have Hawkeye let it go and focus on the fact that they're all about to be left basically unsupervised with the USO girls
This culminates in Hawkeye getting alone with one of the USO girls and asking her, "This is gong to sound crazy, but what are your thoughts on pickles?" She then answers, "Oh I hate them." Hawkeye then has a full break down saying, "You have no idea how sad I am to hear you say that."
She insist she doesn't like the crunch, Hawkeye argues that the crunch is the best part, she then says, "If I knew my night would end up like this, I would have went with the clerk. I'm leaving!" Hawkeye calls after her saying, "Fine! Enjoy your jelly on untoasted bread!"
He then arrives back at camp to see all the nurses and Liz happily eating out of a jar of pickles; it really was so thoughtful of him

#OTD in 1616 – Death in Rome of Aodh Mór Ó Néill (anglicised as Hugh The Great O’Neill), 3rd Baron Dungannon and 2nd Earl of Tyrone.
Born in 1550, Hugh O’Neill (Aodh Mór Ó Neill) was the second son of Mathew Ceallaigh the illegitimate son of Conn Bacach O’Neill who had submitted to Henry VIII in 1542 and was regranted his lands with the English title 1st Earl of Tyrone. Mathew Ceallaigh had been murdered by his half-brother Shane the Proud O’Neill who also drove the elderly Conn out of Tyrone and into the Pale in 1559 where he…

David Tennant, The Ghost Of Benjy O'Neil, and the Queen!
A few days ago I wrote a bit about David Tennant's role as Benjy in The Ghost of Benjy O'Neil (1989).
If you've read it (and if you haven't, what are you waiting for?) you'll have learned an incredibly freaking cool bit of trivia, and that's this: David performed in front of Queen Elizabeth II!
But if you read it (and believe me, there's a lot of other interesting stuff in the post I'm not sharing here at the moment) you'll also have learned that during my research I also thought I found a photo of David with the Queen!
But I wasn't sure.
Here's the photo in question:
Tumblr media
from the Daily Record, 3 March 1990
From my article: "In the forefront of this picture with the Queen are the Jigsaw Dancers, a group of developmentally challenged dancers from East Kilbride. Behind the Queen, the Duke is greeting a pair of girls, one in a long dress, and the other in a short haircut. But it’s the tall young man standing behind the girls, and slightly behind and to the right of the smiling young man with a painted face in the very center of the photo, who interests me the most. We only see his left ear, but we can see his jawline and the way his hair curls around the nape of his neck."
Now, thanks to Robert McAteer (who’s been an absolutely essential part of my research about this play, as not only was he its Production Coordinator, he was also in attendance at the gala) I can confirm: the photo at the end of my post was David!

#OTD in 1600 – O'Neill engages Mountjoy's forces in the Battle of Moyry Pass.
In September of 1600, the Irish forces of Hugh O’Neill, whom the English had made Earl of Tyrone, were in rebellion against the crown. Two years earlier O’Neill and his principle ally “Red” Hugh O’Donnell had routed an English army under Sir Henry Bagenal at Yellow Ford, expelling the English completely from the lands of O’Neill. Now Charles Blount, Lord Mountjoy, was marching on Tyrone with…

Watching Stargate Atlantis for the second time and having watched SG-1 for the first time previous to this I have issues with some of the Atlantis Characters.
Weir was part of Stargate Command for a short time but supposedly read all the mission reports (she mentions this numerous times). And I’m sure McKay read his fair share including anything Carter wrote, but knows very little of the Stargate and Ancients. Had he even been through the gate before this?
So why in Sanctuary Elizabeth didn’t understand what happened when the Ancient ascended and went through the Stargate I don’t know. She’d have known all about what happened to Daniel.
And in Before I Sleep Weir and McKay don’t know about time travel being possible when Weir at least would’ve known about SG-1 travelling back to to the 60s and again when they went back to Ancient Egypt. McKay would’ve read Carter’s work on this at least.
Sheppard’s team seem to go into situations haphazardly to say the least. Every episode I’m watching I’m thinking how SG-1 would’ve handled it. O’Neill would’ve blown that wraith hive ship to pieces at the start of the series but not before Carter and the Asgard created a virus to destroy all wraith ships in the process.
And in Home didn’t anyone think it weird that Stargate Command said the Asgard were just developing a ship that could travel that far to check on them? The Asgard and Stargate Command had that technology for years before that. That whole storyline about not being able to get back is crazy when the Asgard and Stargate Command have ships with hyperdrives.
Sheppard seems to be a character that’s thrown in at the deep end being the only Major and the only highest ranking officer after the first couple of episodes. He flew O’Neill into Antarctica right at the start and didn’t even know about the Stargate. Any Major going into that situation should’ve at least read mission reports and gone with SG-1 on a few trips through the Stargate. Why only send one Colonel and one Major to Atlantis? Carter as Captain knew more than he did.
My thoughts for now at least…
