Hello my pals
Let's talk the Southern Isles
Now, the only picture we have from there is this one:
This one Gazette snippet:
And the vague description in "A Frozen Heart".
But I would like to focus on the one picture we have, from "Frozen Fever" and no, it ain't about Hans, it's about everything around him.
Now, let's remember the date. It is June. It is Summer Solstice.
Look. At. The. Trees. Those trees aren't just late with their leaves, they look dead.
And now look at the ground. Look at the sky. Look at the gate which looks like ruins.
And the Gazzette says it is a "beautiful, clear day". I am sorry, that is what you are considering "a clear day"?
Now, it is probably just an animator's way to show us how bleak Hans' life is now, but this + what we know about their king from "A Frozen Heart" gives me the vibe of...
This.
I may be reading too much about it, but I don't think this kingdom is fine.

The Snow Queen (Hans Christian Andersen) "Magic ice gets into a boy's heart and makes him incapable of caring for others."
A Frozen Heart (Elizabeth Rudnick) "A novel adaptation of Disney's 'Frozen' which reveals and unpacks Prince Hans' backstory as he changes from a decent young man who abhors his family's violence, manipulations, and abuse, to the villain who uses all of those tactics to take advantage of Princess Anna, as in the film. He realizes that his behavior is abhorrent, but his need to be loved and accepted by his father and brothers outweighs his sense of decency, and he does whatever he feels is necessary to take the throne of Arendelle."

What did Hans do for his father in 'a frozen heart'?
There's this part in the book where he's talking about collecting taxes off of people and then someone told him they couldn't pay it so he did something and he felt really disgusting afterwards but I'm wondering what it was or was it intentionally kept ambiguous so you could imagine the worst.

2015 was the year when I properly got into the fandom (though only for myself at the time). It was then I started hoarding Frozen books 😅
What should not be forgotten from 2015 is the Frozen retelling "A frozen heart" by Elizabeth Rudnick which presented unique perspectives on Anna's and Hans' sides of the story (but sadly nothing from Elsa's or Kristoff's). It's still among the best Frozen novels imo, and very special in the way in which it added depth both to the events in the movie, the actions of the Frozen characters (especially Hans and his crazy plan which he had to change every minute) as well as info about a bunch of background characters. It is definitely worth reading if you already haven't!
Frozen Through the Years
Yearly Spotlight: 2015
Written by @secretsofthestorymakers
After Frozen’s massive success in the previous two years, Disney wanted to do more with it. On March 12, Disney announced that they were going to produce a feature length sequel to Frozen.
In addition to this, the short film Frozen Fever premiered alongside the live-action Cinderella across the US on March 13. This short film excited fans with a new Frozen story, including an original song and new outfits for all the characters. This, of course, led to a whole new wave of merchandise. Frozen Fever and Making Today a Perfect Day became an instant hit with fans, who were excited to have new Frozen content.
Disney also released the collector’s edition of Frozen on DVD and Blu-ray, which included a printed 28-page booklet containing concept art and behind-the-scenes information about the creation of the story. Various Disney parks had temporary Frozen attractions in 2015, such as Frozen Fun at Disney’s California Adventure and Hong Kong Disneyland and Anna and Elsa’s Frozen Fantasy at Tokyo Disneyland.
The Frozen franchise grew very quickly as more and more chapters of the franchise were announced, promising a story that would continue several years into the future.

She began to walk around him slowly, scrutinizing. She had to admit he wasn’t terrible to look at, even for a human. She could have created far worse.

Elsa giving Anna time to process her new looks! 🤭
She was surprised by Elsa's new appearance. Her sister wasn’t just different, she was transformed. The woman standing there was the most beautiful person Anna had ever seen... Elsa looked, well, stunning. No, it’s more than the dress and the hair, Anna realized. She looks… free.
— A Frozen Heart by Elizabeth Rudnick
Then, with a magical flourish, Elsa created a new dress for herself, too. It was a long, frosty, pale green gown.
“Whoa!” Anna said.
— Frozen Fever: The Junior Novelization adapated by Victoria Saxon
The Water Spirit washed Elsa onto the shore and she stood there—tall, glistening, ethereal. Anna stopped before she reached her sister. It looked like her, but she was different.
“Is it really you?” Anna asked, not sure what to believe, thinking maybe her eyes, or her brain, were playing tricks on her.
— Frozen 2: The Junior Novelization adapated by David Blaze
I noticed Elsa does a thing where she stands in silence for a moment whenever she shows herself to Anna after a significant outfit change. We know it's because she is also glad to reunite with her sister, so they have an exchange of smiles and soft eyes— In Frozen 2, Anna literally thought Elsa died so, of course, she needed a moment to take in seeing her again.
But I like to think it's also because Elsa's giving her some loading time to process her new magical girl transformations 😆
Elsa doesn't like to show off, but I wonder if she ever gets excited to show Anna her new looks (as sisters often do), but is still somewhat shy to present herself for the first time! It's like when you're finally done getting ready for an event or a date, so now you have to exit your room and let your family see you lol
We also know that the Frohana does good-naturedly tease Elsa's extravagant sense of style which I think adds another layer of wholesomeness to it ♡

A friendly, summer reminder that, first of all, Hans knows Oaken, and secondly, he is now, cannonically, a proud owner of at least one pair of trousers without legs.
And my hand itches in general direction of my pencil.

I've been summoned!
I think it is an interpretation matter, because, let's see:
"Caleb had married a few years before, and his wife had given birth to their first son soon after, which took a great deal of pressure off the remaining sons to produce heirs".(1)
Now, "a few years before" means, I think, more like 2-4 years [Hans is 17 in this expert and Caleb's wife is pregnant with a second one here as well] so in my opinion - the oldest may be max. 7 years old during Frozen, but I think more like 5. And it sounds like Caleb was the first of them to have a kid of his own and when a baby was born, everyone got off of the remaining Westergaard's backs with "marry, reproduce, marry, reproduce marryreproducemarryreproduce" nagging. Which "hadn't stopped some of them, of course"(2). I am not sure about this "some", but well, twins are out.
Also, "All of Hans's brothers, except the twins, were now married with children"(3), there is no exception for Lars, but I understand where are you coming from. There:
"(...) any news on when I might become an uncle again? I am hoping your child might like me at least."
Lars laughed. "If Helga has anything to do with it, the only person that child will like is her".(4)
So it looks like, indeed, Lars' kid isn't there yet. But I'd offer a very simple explanation for it, which is not a canon but ties both parts together - I think it may be interpreted as Helga being pregnant with their first one at this time.
All of this said, you do you, of course! If your interpretation is different, let it be, of course. I am just here to blabber about my own headcanons.
1. Rudnick Elizabeth, "A Frozen Heart", Paper Rocket (Paragon Books Ltd), 2016, p. 31
2. Ibidem.
3. Ibidem
4. Ibidem, p. 40
I keep seeing people portray Hans’ nieces and nephews as little kids and this is fair. That said in The Frozen Heart it’s said that all of Hans’ brothers, with the exception of Lars and the twins, all had kids. And Hans was seventeen at the time. So it is not outside the range of possibility that Hans’ age gap with his oldest niece and/or nephew is, like, seven years.
In short Hans should have a brigade of teenagers who are mean to him.

There Will Come Soft Rains (Ray Bradbury) "This a short story that has been adapted many times, including into a graphic novel. It takes place post nuclear apocalypse, where a futuristic home does its daily routine, despite the devastation outside. At some point, the family dog, riddled with tumors, crawls into the house and dies. It's very depressing. It implies the house would have continued doing this routine forever, except it catches on fire. With no one to stop it, it burns down."

"Your sister is dead, because of you... " 💔
Made a simple edits for one of my favourite Frozen novel "A Frozen Heart" by Elizabeth Rudnick...💙
This novel's practically a Frozen retelling novel but with Anna and Hans perspective, and this is the reason I love this novel so much 💕 It's having more details compared with Frozen Junior Novelisation, like we know the name for many characters in Frozen: those dignitaries who participated Elsa's coronation, two guards of Weselton and more, which I'm glad and excited to know more details that is not in the movie 💙 And I honestly think we need another novel to focus on Elsa's pov 🤔
About the edit concept, there's nothing new as technically I was editing a Frozen poster 😂 I was planning to place Kristoff, Sven and Olaf in the edits but it doesn't work well, and the main focus for this book were only Anna and Hans (and Elsa imo) so I excluded the rest. Honestly I've tried edited the rest in it and it really looks like for Conceal, Don't Feel but not for A Frozen Heart lol 😂 Also I didn't add any details because there's nothing new needed to be included, there's no letter, no newspaper, no necklace like other novels 😅 But it's normal since it's a Frozen retelling novel 😂

Care to share some of your headcanons about The Southern Isles and its royal family?
Sure!
So I go off Elizabeth Rudnick's "Frozen Heart" book for the most part, so yeah Han's whole family is kinda aweful, makes sense why he'd turn out that way :/
For his family, his father is King Gudbrand, and his mother is Queen Honoria (her younger sister Constantina is the mother of Prince Charming in Cinderella)
Here's what I had in my notes for his brothers and their families, names that are bolded come from the book
Caleb--Crown Prince of Southern Isles and heir to the throne, married to Princess Irina of Westberg, they have two daughters and a son
Peder-King Consort of Ingvarr, two daughters
Lars--Prince Consort of Westerberg, Daughter is Princess Cassandra
Ruddi/Runo-- Twins. Married at one point to duchesses but Outlaws now (yes they're the Stabbington Brothers, don't @ me it works and it's funny)
Elias--King Consort of Norberg, wife Queen Abigal and daughter princess Chloe
Mateo, Mikkel and Marius--Triplets. All married to minor nobility of various kingdoms, 2 boys and a girl between them
Theodor--married no children
Esben married no children
Hans was a suprise baby (and an unwanted one at that 💔 )
Yeah basically his family supplies grooms to half the kingdoms in the Everrealm xD
The Southern Isles was originally people by a banished group from one of the Northern kingdoms, back in the Everrealm's viking days, after they fell out of favor with the current king.
Their leader originally owned a fiefdom in the west of the country, hence his surname "Vestergaard" which became "Westergaard" over the years.
The power of the Southern Isles used to be a bigger deal in the old more warlike/sea faring days, both for their navy and as a needful port/place of defense. But as times and technology changed they've fallen by the wayside, and have tried to retain their failing power through alliances, but the king is very bitter about his sons all being Consorts only and not kings by right. Heck of a guy :p

Anna giggled. “Are you kidding me? I have enough trouble dancing as it is. I don’t need help looking less graceful.” She paused, as if weighing her next words. Then, in a rush, she said, “You make me look graceful.”
Her honesty surprised Hans, and he found himself saying the next words before he could stop himself. “You make me look happy.” Instantly, he wished he could take it back.
