Marewrew - Ukouk Remixes Pt. 02 - dub remixes of songs from Ainu vocal quartet's album Ukouk. Round Singing Voices of the Ainu 2012​-​2024

This is the second package of remixes for the hypnotic folk music of the Ainu a cappella group Marewrew. Pt. 02 is dedicated to Dub remixes, featuring Elijah Minnelli and Peter Presto on a 7" single. The digital package is complete with remixes by Cloud Management, Contact Field Orchestra, and Andi Otto. Marewrew (pronounced: Ma-leoo-leoo) is a female vocal group that sings traditional Ainu songs. The music of the long-suppressed people from northern Japan has been a particular focus of the Pingipung output in recent years. Following various re-releases by Umeko Ando, the late grande dame of traditional Ainu music, the spotlight is now on the a cappella music of Marewrew, which by the way means ‘butterfly’ in Ainu. Attentive listeners will recognise the voices, as some of the band have already performed as backing singers on recordings by Umeko Ando. Their a cappella versions of traditional Ainu music shed a whole new light on the fascinating songs that have been passed down through generations exclusively through song. 'Ukouk' means 'round singing', which refers to the form in which Marewrew perform and record. Many of the songs are set as tightly interwoven canons: one starts, the others join in, but slightly out of phase: Almost like dub echoes, except that they are sung and not created in post-production.

The event will see performances from теплота, memotone & Elijah Minnelli, with the night being soundtracked by resident i-sha, showcasing her trademark dark & shapeshifting style. The night will feature ethereal dub from Minnelli’s mixing desk, the full spectrum of memotone’s eclectic jazz palette & the work of теплота, hybrid improvised techno suspended between physical and digital worlds.

It also marks the release of Skynned, теплота’s new record on AM, which comes out on February 3rd.

I spent yesterday afternoon exploring a silent and deserted goods yard under moody grey skies in the heart of Vienna. The dried-out vegetation, ominous clouds and sultry air lent a post-apocalyptic mood to my wanderings, as did the complete absence of activity in what must have once been a noisy and bustling logistics depot.

It's a location that makes for a fascinating meander but is hard to photograph successfully. Multiple parallel lines send the eye hurtling towards their convergence at the vanishing point. Almost every photograph taken is a slight variation on the previous picture, so I was glad of some monumental street art courtesy of a recent 'Festival for Urban Aesthetics' by callelibre.at to break up the visual monotony.

I discovered a small museum at the edge of the site. It only opens for a few hours on a Thursday- a fortunate coincidence!

Translated from the museum's website- 'Despite its size, the Northwest Train Station seems to have largely disappeared from the consciousness of the Viennese. Before the area has to give way to a new residential quarter, the eventful history and present of this last logistics hub close to the city center will be brought to the attention of a broader public in an on-site exhibition.'

Conspicuously absent from the museum's exhibition (and unlikely to be commemorated in the subsequent development) was mention of the deportation of 3000+ Jews from Nordwestbanhof between 1943-45 (https://atelierjadeniklai.com/portfolio/bmp-vienna/).

This omission seems particularly insensitive considering the goods yard is directly adjacent to Leopoldstad, which remains the heart of Jewish life in Vienna.

It is equally disappointing that none of the 19th-century industrial architecture will be incorporated into the future redevelopment- peering through the Crittall-style windows revealed loft-like interiors that are perfect spaces for ateliers and studios.

Breadminster’s Elijah Minnelli presents a new collaborative project with outsider artist and Zàchmanién woodwind player LANSIED NECHDELANI,“ze-hood de-sham lichdal” (“I Hope The Goats Come Back”)  which comes as part of a Breadminster County Council initiative to provide internet to towns around the world with similar population sizes to that of Breadminster. Elijah and Lansied first met online and were able to collaborate via the newly created broadband connection to Lansied’s hometown; Elijah took an immediate shine Lansied’s style, admiring his minimalist approach and 'accomplished naivety', using it to form the melodic basis of this bass-driven, melancholic 'call to the sky.' The title of the track translates to “I Hope The Goats Come Back," and speaks of Lansied’s worry at the sudden recent pilgrimage of the local herd. These Biblical undertones both resonate sonically within the track and coincide with the tracks release date; that of the Jewish High Holy Days The B-side is a full live Dub cut performed by Elijah, who deconstructs the track into a pseudo-spiritual nothingness that scuttles happily around the speakers.

Breadminster-based DJ/Producer Elijah Minnelli has been making a splash in the world of broadcasting thanks to his monthly show on Soho Radio. Elijah’s previous release “Bebé Durmiendo Cumbia” saw his left-field dubby production being played on radio and championed by the likes of Andrew Weatherall and Laurent Garnier. Elijah’s unique angle, which champions vintage calypso/mento/cumbia/beguine alongside left-field dub & reggae cuts, has cemented him a cult fan-base consistently placing him in the top 10 of Mixcloud’s Global ska chart.

Elijah has DJ’d both internationally and at home, where his eclectic feel-good selections from calypso to dub have proved a hit with a diverse range of audiences.
