More bad (or in some cases pretty good) Xmas movie reviews here! I’ve tried some odd ones.
EDITED TO INCLUDE:
Christmas on Mistletoe Farm: This was EFFING CUTE. Super British. Quirky kids in hand knitted stuff and big Wellies. Baby barn animals everywhere. Comedic English overacting. As charming as a mouse in a teapot. I would watch it every year twice. The colors alone are scrumptious. 9/10
* Christmas Inheritance - As stereotypical as Christmas romance movies get. Small town, lonely innkeeper, main character returns to town to find the magic of Christmas by helping with some pageant or festival or whatnot. Bland but mainly pleasant but stop making characters do that slow head shake while sincerely singing thing, it’s weird . 4/10
A Christmas Movie Christmas - A fun swing at typical Christmas movies. Christmas magic transports two sisters into a Christmas movie of their own where they wake up every day with their hair and makeup already done and cookies already baked. Parts of it are funny, but it led me to the disturbing revelation that all B actors wear false teeth. 6/10
Christmas Chronicles 2: I was excited for this. Hot Santa, Belsneckel, Yule Cat. Nope. Bad. Please don’t bother, you’ll soil the first movie. 1/10
Dash & Lily : in spite of being about New York, this short series is really good and sweet. It’s a scavenger hunt of literature and romance and the art of loving your own weirdness against the backdrop of Christmas. It’s charming and colorful. Definitely not perfect, it is a high school aged series based on YA romance and that can sometimes lead to “youthful” acting, but it is good and I appreciated it and the music was superb. 9/10
Noelle - dang, I really liked this. It seems a discredit to say it’s like a gender bent Elf, but that is the broadest definition. Very warm and loving. 10/10
Scrooge: A Christmas Carol - this is the animated Netflix version. I have mixed feelings. I thought they took the art in some really interesting places. I thought the music was pretty terrible. I thought they did the lower budget animation thing where some characters look amazing and some look poorly thought out. I thought Scrooge was weirdly hot. 6/10
Mickey and Friends: Duck The Halls - Newer style of Mickey Mouse animation that is part Ren and Stimpy and part midcentury modern, which is awesome. Donald Duck stays in the snowy north for the winter and literally falls apart from the cold, lots of body horror. Hilarious. 10/10
Jingle All The Way - I know, it is weird that as a 90s kid, I had never seen this. I was promised a bad movie and I’m slightly disappointed that I loved the hell out of it. From Arnold expecting us to believe that he works in mattress sales and saying “you’re my numbah one custahmahh” with a cheesy grin to a brawl of underground gang Santas to Phil Hartman having the balls to hit on Arnold’s wife and moaning obscenely over the phone about how good her cookies are while Arnold yells “PUT DAT COOKIE DOWN”, it’s all amazing. But really the best part is the unexpectedly complex buildup of a real hero/villain relationship - the connection, the offer of friendship that gets rejected, the ensuing battle that becomes an insane bid for revenge, culminating in a real costumed fight that ends - in the true spirit of Christmas - with the police hauling away a grown man in a latex bodysuit clutching a toy he has ruthlessly stolen from a child that would grow up to become Darth Vader. 15/10

Alright that's it. Marvel really hit rock bottom with Nightcrawler. Not a single member in the X-Office knows what to do with him anymore. Like yes he references Spider-Man a lot, yes they have similar powers and yes he has many values similar to Peter's. But for crying out loud. Having him masquerading as THE Spider-Man is the stupidest next step in this in-universe reference. Why is this even a thing. Where's Spidey?? AND WHY DOES KURT REPLACE HIM OF ALL PEOPLE??? Sure they've met before but they're barely acquaintances and Peter wouldn't put his responsibility on New York on anyone other than himself.
Kurt's costume is the most useless thing about this mess: The whole point of Spidey's is to conceal his identity... What does the one Kurt has conceal exactly? Every specific physical trait that relates to him is visible! How many people in the Marvel universe have a spaded tail, elf ears, two toes, three fingers and make a BAMF sound while goddamn TELEPORTING?? Which idiot wouldn't know who's behind that mask in one meeting?
Also. Do I really need to bring up how unfortunately placed Kurt's tail is on the spider symbol. How unfortunately shaped it is in that placing. Has nobody at Marvel noticed this
It is a bizarre choice among a whole bunch of other bizarre choices for Fall of X. I’m guessing one of two things are going on:
One from a marketing standpoint. Nightcrawler’s not the only mutant mixing with other Marvel characters (although I do believe he’s the only one taking up another’s mantle), so this may be a huge plug by Marvel comics marketing. Attempting to boost comics sales by mixing other Marvel properties together and maybe in preparation for the x-men’s MCU debut. Naively thinking that all MCU fans also read comics.
Or, based on the synopses I’ve read for a number of the Fall of X books, the mutants appear to be once again ‘public enemy number one’ with many of them possibly missing/dead/out of commission. Therefore Nightcrawler may actually be keeping his mutant identity hidden or not advertising at least. On the other hand he could be promoting mutants as heroes by taking on a role that the public support and doing what Kurt does best, be a huge ham. It’s also possible that Peter Parker may be out of commission. So Nightcrawler could also be filling in for him.
Whatever the reason, it will make for some interesting speculation until the book comes out in September.

The 1970s - part 3
Punk
Punk fashion originated in the late 70s. Punk rock stripped rock and roll back to its foundations. The punk ethos is primarily made up of beliefs such as non-conformity, anti-authoritarianism, a do-it-yourself ethic, anti-consumerist, anti-corporate greed, direct action, and not "selling out". The clothing represented a darker and harsher view of reality.
Vivienne Westwood’s controversial ‘Destroy’ T-shirt, 1977. The Destroy T- shirt was meant to be an angry condemnation towards government, religion and fascism.
English punk icons Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren opened the infamous SEX / Seditionaries shop on Kings Road and ultimately deconstructed British fashion, mixing X-rated silk screens, bondage gear, vinyl, rubber and safety pins with iconic English fashions such as plaid kilts and tight stovepipe trousers.
In America, The punk style was more laid back and not as exaggerated as it was in England. It was amplified by bands such as the Ramones, Blondie, and Richard Hell and the Voidoids. However they opted for a more laid back look with tight jeans, leather motorcycle jackets, sneakers, and ripped t- shirts.

Elf Bar Nicotine Content: A Flavorful Journey Through the Clouds
Welcome to the whimsical world of Elf Bar, where each puff is not just a mere inhalation of vapor but a ticket to a flavorful carnival! With a riot of flavors that could rival your grandma's secret candy drawer, Elf Bars have become a go-to for vape enthusiasts who like a bit of zest in their zest. But let’s not just skate over the icy tip of this vape iceberg. Each Elf Bar packs a punch with its nicotine content, making every drag both a taste adventure and a nicotine rendezvous. Buckle up, as we delve into the depths of Elf Bar nicotine levels, explore its audacious array of flavors, and uncover some truths that might just cloud your judgment (in a good way)! Understanding the Nicotine Numbers Elf Bars aren't just about sending tastebuds on a rollercoaster of delight; they're also about delivering a specific nicotine hit that meets the needs of different users. With nicotine strengths typically set at 2% (20mg) and 5% (50mg) per unit volume, these devices cater to both the light-hearted puffers and the serious cloud chasers. But why these numbers? The 2% version is like a light summer breeze—enough to give you a taste but not enough to knock your socks off. Meanwhile, the 5% is akin to a gusty wind on a stormy day, providing a robust nicotine experience for those who crave intensity. Each puff from an Elf Bar is carefully measured to ensure consistent nicotine delivery. This precision allows users to manage their intake more effectively, which is crucial for those transitioning from traditional smoking to vaping. Plus, knowing you're getting a precise dose with each drag is like having a trusty map while navigating the mysterious vaping lands—a true comfort! A Flavor Fiesta One does not simply vape an Elf Bar without commenting on its spectrum of flavors. From the lush Mango Milk Ice to the zesty Blue Razz Lemonade, each flavor is a testament to Elf Bar's commitment to variety and quality. Imagine this: one moment you're on a tropical beach sipping Mango Milk Ice, and the next, you're at a sunny fair with a tangy Blue Razz Lemonade in hand—what a wild ride! But it's not just about the variety. The intensity of the flavor mixed with the chosen nicotine level creates a unique vaping experience. The flavors are engineered to complement the nicotine strength, ensuring that neither overwhelms the other. It's a delicate dance between flavor and strength, and Elf Bar vapes lead it masterfully, spinning you into a cloud of satisfaction with every puff. Market Mosaic—Who’s Vaping What? The distribution of nicotine strengths across different markets is intriguing. While some regions may favor the light and breezy 2% Elf Bars, others might lean towards the bolder 5%. This distribution is not just a matter of taste but often aligns with local regulations and cultural preferences. For instance, markets with stricter nicotine regulations might see higher sales of the 2% variety, while areas with a more laissez-faire approach might puff more of the 5% offerings. Understanding these preferences helps Elf Bar to tailor its products to meet the distinct needs of diverse populations. It’s a bit like being a world-class DJ, knowing exactly which track to play to keep the party jumping, whether it’s a rooftop in New York or a beach party in Ibiza. Health Haze—Navigating the Nicotine Fog As with any product containing nicotine, there's a cloud of health considerations surrounding Elf Bars. It's important to understand that while vaping can be a fun and flavorful experience, nicotine is a highly addictive substance. The ease and enjoyment of pulling an Elf Bar out and puffing away can sometimes obscure the visibility on this serious aspect. The choice between the 2% and 5% nicotine options should be informed by an understanding of one's own nicotine tolerance and needs. New users particularly should approach the higher nicotine content with caution—like dipping your toes in the pool before diving in. Health professionals generally advocate for using products like Elf Bars as a step towards reducing nicotine dependence, rather than as an endgame recreational activity. Conclusion Dive into the vibrant world of Elf Bar vapes, where each puff is not just a flavor explosion but also a precise dose of nicotine, available in strengths of 2% or 5%. This article explores the intricacies of Elf Bar's offerings, from the vast spectrum of flavors like Mango Milk Ice to Blue Razz Lemonade, to the way nicotine levels vary by market, reflecting local tastes and regulations. It highlights the importance of understanding these variations for both enjoyment and health, emphasizing that while vaping can be a delightful sensory journey, the nicotine content demands responsible usage. Whether you're a vaping novice or connoisseur, understanding the specifics of your Elf Bar can greatly enhance your experience, ensuring each drag is as satisfying as it is safe. FAQs 1. What nicotine strengths are available in Elf Bars? Elf Bars primarily come in two nicotine strengths: 2% (20mg) and 5% (50mg) nicotine by volume. This range caters to both light users and those who prefer a stronger nicotine hit. 2. How many flavors does Elf Bar offer? Elf Bar offers a diverse array of flavors, ensuring there's something for everyone. Popular options include Mango Milk Ice, Blue Razz Lemonade, and a variety of other fruity and refreshing flavors, each designed to provide a unique vaping experience. 3. Can Elf Bars help me quit smoking? While Elf Bars are not marketed as a cessation device, many users utilize them as a transitional tool to reduce their smoking habits. The controlled nicotine levels allow users to manage their intake more effectively compared to traditional cigarettes. However, consulting with a health professional is recommended when using vaping products as part of a strategy to quit smoking. 4. Are there different Elf Bar models with varying nicotine contents? Yes, Elf Bar models vary not only in flavor but also in nicotine content, depending on the specific model and the market in which they are sold. This variation helps to accommodate different preferences and legal requirements across regions. 5. Is vaping an Elf Bar safe? Vaping an Elf Bar, like using any nicotine-based product, comes with health risks due to the addictive nature of nicotine. However, Elf Bars are regulated and manufactured to ensure quality and safety in their consumption. Users should vape responsibly and be aware of the nicotine content they are inhaling to manage potential risks effectively. 2023: A Year in Movies
Since 1999, I’ve logged every movie I’ve seen, in the theater, online, or at home on video. In 2023 I saw 79 movies, down 5 from 2022. Eighteen of the movies were new releases viewed at the theater, another dozen or so were big screen classics at TPR’s Cinema Tuesdays. My favorite new movie in the theater was “Killers of the Flower Moon.” My favorite new-to-me movie from a previous year that I discovered was Carlos Saura's “Carmen,” featuring transcendent flamenco dance numbers. I watched the new Indiana Jones movie twice this year; I think it's in the Top Three of Indiana Jones movies for me.

The Power of Music in Christmas Videos
The power of music in Christmas videos cannot be underestimated. When it comes to video production, editing, and filmmaking, music plays a crucial role in setting the tone and evoking emotions in the audience. Who doesn’t love watching a Christmas movie with a mug of warm hot chocolate?! Christmas videos are known for their festive and joyful atmosphere, and carefully selected music can enhance these feelings. The right choice of music can create a sense of nostalgia, warmth, and excitement that is synonymous with the holiday season, and enjoyed by people all over the world. Videographers and filmmakers understand the importance of incorporating music into their video content. It helps to establish a connection with the viewers and enhances the overall viewing experience. Whether it’s a heartwarming family gathering or a lively holiday celebration, the right musical accompaniment can bring these scenes to life. Music also helps in creating a cohesive narrative within Christmas videos. It adds rhythm and pacing to different scenes, guiding the audience through various emotions and story arcs. From background tracks that subtly support the visuals to impactful musical moments that heighten dramatic or joyful moments, music has the power to elevate any Christmas video. According to FiveThirtyEight , who analysed songs on IMBD, Jingle Bells has appeared in 373 movies! Can you think of any movies this song has been in? What’s your favourite Christmas song? In the Shot Blast Media office, we always get excited about getting into the wintery season and being able to start watching Christmas films! We love singing along to our favourite soundtracks too! The following three films have some of the most iconic Christmas music used in their soundtracks. 1. The Snowman (1982) The Snowman is a beautiful silent film, based on Raymond Briggs’ book. It is the ultimate proof that a great soundtrack is what makes a movie. The movie is composed by Howard Blake, and he managed to capture unbelievable soundscapes and detailing within the film. The most known song from this movie is, of course, ‘Walking In The Air’, which is a wonderful piece of music that captures the essence of the film for everyone watching it. 2. Love Actually (2003) This classic romcom, featuring multiple well-known actors, including Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman and Keira Knightley, has a fantastic soundtrack that its audience loves! One of the most enjoyed pieces of music from this movie is Bill Nighy’s iconic ‘Christmas Is All Around’, which I’m sure everyone sings along to in their living room! 3. Elf (2003) Another quintessential Christmas film, which stars Will Ferrell as Buddy the Elf, the protagonist of the movie. Set in New York City, this Christmas staple features multiple wintery songs, including ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ and ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’. I bet you can’t help but sing along! In addition to Christmas soundtracks enhancing emotions and storytelling, music also contributes to brand recognition for businesses. Companies often use specific songs or melodies in their Christmas videos as part of their branding strategy. This helps create familiarity among viewers and strengthens associations between the brand and positive holiday experiences. Creating Christmas themed video content for your brand or company is always an engaging way of getting the attention of your target audience, and accompanies your business increasing website visits, leads and sales. In conclusion, when it comes to creating impactful Christmas videos, videographers should not overlook the power of music. By carefully selecting appropriate tracks that align with the desired mood and message of their video content, they can create memorable experiences for viewers during this festive season. Caring for Elf Ear and Bambino Cats: Tips and Guidelines
As beloved pets, cats have long maintained a special place in our hearts. Each breed has its own distinct characteristics and personality. Elf Ear and Bambino cats are two different feline breeds that have drawn notice due to their uncommon morphological characteristics. These breeds need specialised care because of their alluring appearances to ensure their health and wellbeing.
In this article by Sphynx World, we’ll look at the crucial advice and standards for taking good care of Elf Ear and Bambino cats.
Recognising the Breeds Elf Ear Cats: Also called American Curl cats, elf ear cats are distinguished by their unusually curled-back ears that resemble the pointed points of elf ears. The warm and friendly characteristics of these endearing felines make them wonderful companions. To avoid infections and pain, however, their ears need special care.
Bambino cats are a relatively new breed of cat that are distinguished by their small legs and sparse or hairless coat. These adorable, energetic cats are little and have a kitten-like appearance all their lives. Although a distinguishing feature, their tiny legs might limit their mobility and comfort.
Tips for Caring 1. Veterinary care: Elf Ear and Bambino cats require regular trips to the vet in order to stay healthy. Due to these breeds’ distinctive characteristics, they might have certain health issues. Regular check-ups guarantee early issue diagnosis and enable rapid treatment.
2. Elf ear cats’ curled-back ears need to be cleaned frequently to prevent wax and dirt buildup. Use a wet towel or an ear cleaner that your veterinarian has prescribed to gently wipe the ears. Avoid forcing anything far into the ear canal because doing so could harm it.
3. Bambino cats’ hairless or sparse coat necessitates specific care to preserve the health of their skin. Their skin can be kept clean with regular baths using a mild cat-specific shampoo. Your veterinarian could also suggest moisturising treatments to stop dryness.
4. Nutrition: Both breeds require a balanced and suitable diet. Based on the age, activity level, and any particular health issues of the cat, consult your veterinarian to select the optimal feeding strategy. Their entire health is enhanced by proper diet, which also supports the maintenance of good skin, fur, and ears.
5. Environmental Enrichment: Use interactive toys, scratching poles, and climbing frames to keep your Bambino or Elf Ear cat mentally and physically engaged. These breeds may have high levels of energy, so it’s important to give them opportunities for play and exploration.
6. Hygiene: Regular brushing can assist Elf Ear cats avoid matts in their silky fur. Due to their lack of fur, bambino cats may need extra cleaning to avoid oil buildup on their skin. For advice on grooming procedures, go to your veterinarian.
7. Health Monitoring: Watch for any alterations in behaviour, eating patterns, or outward appearance. Effective treatment can result from early identification of potential health problems. Regularly check on their ears, skin, and general health.
8. Socialisation and Bonding: Both Bambino and Elf Ear cats are renowned for their amiable and loving personalities. Spend time with them, play with them in an engaged way, and show them loving affection. Positive exchanges deepen your relationship with your feline friend.
In conclusion, unusual cat breeds like Elf Ear and Bambino cats enrich their owners’ lives with elegance and joy. Their total health and happiness depend on us giving them the right attention, love, and care. Keep in mind to speak with your vet for advice that is tailored to the specific requirements of your cat. Elf Ear and Bambino cats can flourish as cherished members of your family for many years with the correct care.

Chapter 13,
The Ambush
*2nd Person POV. The morning after Serafina leaves*
The next morning you awoke to the desert sun shining in your tent.
“What do you mean she’s gone!?” you hear John’s voice snap with anger. You peek out of your tent to see the boys all standing around under the desert sun but Serafina was nowhere to be seen. John stood in front of Freddie, his hands fuming with his purple magic while his sons Seraffel and Thor stood behind their father, the same look of anger across their faces.
“I’m saying what is true. She’s gone on her own path.”
“What is it with you fucking Nagas and your riddle talk!? Where exactly did our mom go!? And I swear to god if you don’t start making any sense I’ll freeze you so bad you won’t start to thaw till the next Ice Age!” Seraffel warned.
“Always barking but never biting. Really Seraffel you’ve threatened me thousands of times since your hatching and you’ve yet to hold up to that threat. No matter how old you were.” Freddie spoke nonchalantly, like he didn’t even care for the ice dragon’s threat. You walk up to Brian and ask him.
“What’s going on here?”
“It would appear that Serafina has gone off on her own somewhere. John and Serafina have rarely been apart from one another, the longest I’ve seen them be apart is when Roger and I were first sent by Freddie to save them.”
“Freddie please just—just tell us where our mom’s at? She could get captured or-or killed!” Thor pleaded.
“Your mother can handle herself. Right now she needs to go on this path on her own.”
“Fred normally I would agree on with what you say but this is no time for a pissing contest! Grindelwald knew we were in New York, who’s to say that the rest of his family or even his spies could be out here looking for us right now!? What if her power alone is not enough?” Roger said as he paced back and forth with worry.
“For someone who claims to care for her you seriously underestimate her Roger dear.” Roger halted in his spot to stare at the Naga. “Serafina’s path lies on a different path than ours for the moment. This part of her journey will come to pass with what we need for the final phase of ending Grindelwald’s followers once and for all. Now will the four of you get your heads out of your arses and understand Serafina is more than capable of taking care of herself and isn’t some fragile little maiden that always needs protecting!”
Freddie’s eyes glowed a fearsome yellow and his voice grew deeper and more snake like.
“Now then, we should reach the Medjai coven by the sun’s highest point if we leave now. Burn the tents and get rid of any evidence of our trail here.” Freddie slithered onward.
As the boys went on with Freddie’s orders, you then ask Brian once more.
“Will she be okay?”
“Serafina is unlike any other witch I’ve met before. Elf or otherwise. She has power unlike anything I’ve ever seen. If I had to say who I should be more worried for, I’d say it’s whatever poor unfortunate soul crosses her path.”
Once the site was cleared up of any of your traces, you continued onward to the Medjai covenant. It felt like an eternity had passed until finally as you all came up over a hill and just down below, several village stood there in the middle of the desert.
“We’ve arrived.” John spoke as he urged his black stallion onward. You followed behind him, then his sons, Brian and Freddie, while Roger flanked in the rear.
As you all approached the entrance into the village, several men in black garb with most of their faces covered, held up their wands towards you guys ready to strike.
“Waqaf!” one of the guards spoke up. Your horse whinnied and reared on it’s hind legs. You held onto the reins as tight as you could as you tried to calm your horse down.
“Whoa, whoa boy whoa easy!” you tell your horse. John’s horse nickered and anxiously paced forward and back.
“We’re not spies! We’re friends with your covenant leader Ardeth Bay. My name is John Deacon and these creatures are my friends.” The guards looked at one another suspiciously when a stern but warm voice proclaimed.
“Let them pass!” soon riding on top of a camel was an Egyptian man with long black hair, two Arabic tattoos on each cheek and one across his forehead, and chocolate brown eyes. He sported a mix of a goatee and beard which went well along his strong jawline.
He was a big man on the muscular side, probably standing at around 6ft, maybe a couple inches. But it was the way he just seem to carry himself that made it seem like he was a true leader, a chieftain maybe.
“This man is under my protection. Anyone who tries to even lay a curse upon him shall face immediate exile, do I make myself clear?” the way his voice commanded these guards, it just made goosebumps come across your arms. The guards put their wands away and bowed with their left feet forward and their right arms crossed over their chests, hands going right over their hearts.
He then turned to John and soon his camel and John’s stallion stood face to face of each other.
“Welcome back my friend, it’s been a long time.”
“I wish the circumstances could be better Ardeth.”
“Well, it is most definitely an upgrade from being lost in the desert for days on end without water and hardly any food.” John chuckled embarrassingly but then the two men clasped hands with each other in a firm handshake.
Then they taking back their hands, kissing the side of their index fingers and placing it on their foreheads before placing their hand before their lips once again (must be an Arabic greeting).
“You and your friends have had a long journey not only from your last hideout but also across the desert. Come, satisfy your hungry and quench your thirst. And for two of your companions, regain their energy.” Ardeth said the last part as he looked to Roger and Seraffel who both looked practically exhausted.
“Thank you Ardeth. We appreciate you giving us a place to rest and regroup.” John thanked him. Ardeth bowed his head before urging his camel forward. You all follow behind the leader of the Medjai sorcerers and as you enter the village, you can see hundreds of Arabic witches, wizards and young children running about going about their day.
Some were selling robes, others had potions and spell books for sale, animals were also being sold at what almost looked like a petting zoo setup but it also had dogs, cats and falcons in their cages. Horses and camels were also on sale at the shop, each wearing a price board around their necks as they went about either pacing around the fence, drinking their water, or eating the food provided for them.
This entire marketplace was just a buzz with people. As you passed by, some of the Medjai wizards and witches looked at you and your friends. Some were in awe, others were skeptical, and the rest held respect as they bowed their heads to you and the others.
Soon you arrived at a large tent. It seemed a pretty good decent size (maybe about 8ft long and 13ft. wide) for all of you to fit inside. The front flaps were a stripped pattern of cream and, at least to you, an earthy kinda brownish-red. The rest of the tent was an earthy tone of dark green and brown stripped pattern.
You all unmounted off your rides and Ardeth walked up to the tent and opened it up for you all.
“Enter my friends, eat and make yourselves at home.” John bent down to take his shoes off before entering inside the tent. Brian did the same thing and gave Ardeth an Elvish thank you by placing his hand over his heart and bowing his head. Ardeth did the same motion and Brian entered inside.
Roger, Thor and Seraffel, then Freddie followed behind after Brian. You undid the last of your laces on your shoes and set them down beside the rest of the shoes that aligned the tent.
“You are the human savior the Naga Freddie has foreseen, aren’t you?” he said to you.
“Well—I don’t think I’d go so far as to say that. I mean yeah I did save John and Serafina’s sons from being imprisoned for all eternity but—other than that I’m not really all that special.”
“I disagree. You have a strong powerful aura within you. You may not yet realize it but it’s in there.” His strong, calloused hand gave your shoulder a gentle squeeze of reassurance. “Every creature on this earth whether mortal or mythical has that power. It’s only up to those brave enough to seek it out. Not all heroes are of just one image.”
He walked back over to the flap of the tent and opened it up for you to walk inside. You enter in and soon Ardeth follows right behind you.
Whoa! This tent was bigger on the inside! Various and beautiful kaleidoscope-like patterned quilts hung along the walls of the tent. There was a pool at the center of the tent and that’s where you saw both Seraffel and Roger, half naked, in the pool rehydrating themselves after being under the hot African sun for the past couple of days.
Thor was just drying off his wet hair (probably just getting out of the pool himself) wearing a white Arabic tunic. Freddie was curled up under the shade fast asleep, while Brian and John were conversing quietly to themselves.
“Hey (n/n) get in the water’s amazing!” Seraffel called out to you.
“It was amazing till you nearly froze it over yah overgrown icicle!” Roger snapped.
“Oh whatever you’re made out of water yourself you’re fine.” Seraffel waved off nonchalantly. You shook your head at seeing those two argue pettily.
“Maybe later guys.” You gave them an answer.
“I apologize for what happened with my guards out front. We’ve been needing to increase security for our coven.” Ardeth said as he went over to the kitchen to make some drinks for us.
“We understand Ardeth. My grandfather—is resilient.” John spoke lowly.
“He is. Unfortunately, it was not your grandfather or his followers that I was referring to.” At hearing this, most of you all look up at the leader of the Medjai sorcerers confused.
“What—do you mean then?” questioned Thor.
“It would seem Grindelwald has finally convinced an even greater foe to side with him.”
“Who?” you ask.
“The Shadow Sorcerers.” At hearing that name, everyone in the room went frigid with fear. Even Freddie’s eyes had opened at hearing their name.
“Who are the Shadow Sorcerers?” you ask.
“A separate branch of one of the most powerful and most dangerous wizards and witches. They branched off during the time of Thomas Deacon, they viewed his radical thinking of submitting themselves under the Sorcerer Supreme’s rule unlawful. So they branched off, became their own branch of sorcerers.” Freddie first explained before John joined in.
“Once my grandfather became Sorcerer Supreme, he tried to sway the Shadow wizards not as pawns, but an ally. A secondhand ally you may call it. Some of the Shadow covens agreed and allowed some of their students to transfer into our school. To study our way of magic. But they made for certain that they would never submit themselves under the rule of the Sorcerer Supreme. At least not without something to gain from it.”
“They value their pride more than anything else in the world. But it would seem some of the Shadow covens have decided to go fully under Grindelwald’s thumb. Their source of magic comes from the most ancient and most darkest of all magic. Using their very own shadows as an extension of themselves in order to take down any enemy.” Ardeth said.
“The Shadow coven takes their inspiration of their magic based on the animals that you humans refer to as Nocturnal animals. Even basing each specific family off the Latin name of said animal. I’ve even seen the Shadow Sorcerers even control other beings to their will by using their own shadows against them. A few of my people before the massacre learned that the hard way.” Freddie said.
“How many Shadow sorcerer covens are there?” asked Thor.
“There are 10 main covens of Shadow Sorcerers, and then depending on the Nocturnal animal they are inspired to emulate, the covens get subdivided into classes based off the species. The covens with the most subclass are the Felines, Rodents, and Mammalia clans.” John answered his youngest son.
“So that means we’re screwed.” Seraffel exclaimed angrily.
“Not necessarily my young ice dragon.” Ardeth added. “I said that some of the covens have joined Grindelwald. You see there are some that have remained either undecisive or wish to remain neutral. But I’m afraid the ones that did join along with Grindelwald, are one of the most strongest Shadow Sorcerers of all.”
“Which coven classes joined alongside him?” Brian asked. Ardeth sighed and said.
“I—truthfully do not know the exact number. But the one that has been skulking around here lately come from the Corvus clan.” You noticed John clenching his hand into a fist and even saw it tremble.
“So what do we do now?” asked Seraffel.
“Right now my friends you rest. And I strictly ask that you do not leave this tent as the sun sets. The shadow wizards tend to do their hunting at night. And whatever you do; Never. Turn on. The lights.” With that, Ardeth left you guys alone to your thoughts.
“Damn. Siding with the Shadow Sorcerers. Grindelwald must be getting desperate if he wanted to ask for their help.” Roger said.
“Does Grindelwald fear the Shadow Sorcerers?”
“To an extent. My grandfather is many things, a coward is definitely not one of them. But he is aware of who is powerful than even him. He must’ve sueded them to a deal that not even they could refuse.” John said. He lowered his head down to his hands and run his fingers through his hair anxiously. “I just hope and pray to Merlin that Serafina’s at least not in Egypt anymore. Or at least nowhere where a Shadow wizard could be.”
“She’ll be fine John. She’s stronger than you realize.” Brian comforted the anxious young wizard.
For the rest of the day, you all rested and pretty much stayed inside the tent because after traveling the desert for 2 days none of you even thought about wanting to go back outside.
When the sky became dark, it was as Ardeth said, no lanterns or lights were coming on in the camp. Not even lights from the tents or houses nearby were up.
“Man, Ardeth wasn’t kidding. Not a single Medjai has their lights on.” You said as you came back into the tent.
“Then we must do the same.” Brian said. He went up to one of the lanterns and turned off the flame candle inside. Roger did the same to his side of the room, and on and on until finally the entire tent was nothing but pitch black.
You adjusted yourself on the soft red velvet couch (well it felt more like a bed with how big it was).
“Goodnight everyone.” You say. They all reply with a goodnight and soon you all fall into a silent sleep.
‘(Y/n).’ a ghostly whisper calls out to you. You moan and try to go back to sleep but the voice calls out to you again. ‘(Y/n)~’ the soft gentle coo of this man’s voice reminded you a lot of your grandfather. The grandfather you lost back in the War.
He had moved to a small town of Leuven in Belgium after remarrying a woman named Pamela Janssens. She was nice and she really helped your grandfather out of his depression when your grandma died of a heart attack. He enjoyed the Belgium countryside and the people were nice to him even from being from America.
But when the German troops invaded Leuven, you were told by your mother (who was the daughter of your grandfather) that he had been shot and killed by a German soldier and Pamela had been raped before being brutally murdered and then their house was burned to the ground.
Your granddad was like a superhero to you. Even in his old age, he never let anything bring him down. That’s why he was able to still pick you up even as you became a teenager. When you received word of his death from Pamela’s sister, it crushed your entire world.
‘(Y/n)~’ the voice called to you again. No it—it couldn’t be him. There’s no way.
“Granddad?” you whisper as you sit up.
‘It’s me.’ You gasp and quickly hop off the couch. ‘I’m here.’ The voice called out again. You peek outside of the tent but it’s nothing but pitch black outside. The crescent shape moon hardly gave off any light but it was then a small blue flame stood before you. It danced and you swore that it had eyes staring up at you.
A trail of them soon popped out, leading away from the village. Something in your gut didn’t seem right but there was a magical force that was just beckoning you to go forward.
‘Hummingbird. It’s me.’ No way…..it—it was him. Only one person ever called you hummingbird and that was your grandfather. You then find yourself walking out of the tent and followed the trail of blue flames, each one of them disappearing as you walked through them.
*3rd Person POV*
Freddie’s eyes snapped open as he looked up in time just to see (Y/n) leaving the tent.
“Roger! Roger!” Freddie hissed quietly. Roger groaned and turned his back on Freddie, burying himself under his pillow. “Thor! Seraffel!” the dragons only kept snoring softly, well Thor was. Seraffel was mumbling incoherently in his sleep.
Rolling his eyes, Freddie decided it was up to him to get their human savior back. He peeked his head out of the tent, his tongue sticking out to taste the air, hoping to get a scent of where they had gone.
He left the tent and soon spotted some fresh footprints leading away from the village.
“Damnit!” he slithered forward following the footprints as fast as he could, hoping it wasn’t too late.
A few feet from the village, he soon heard the sound of wings flapping. Quickly finding a rocky ledge to hide under, he soon saw 4 figures land down a few yards away from him and soon the figures of 4 men in black robes stood there.
However one of them kept out his black feather wings out and he spoke to the three men.
“With them separated it’ll be easier to take them down. But leave them alive—for now.” The three wizards soon took off on foot now to find (Y/n). Each going a different direction in hopes of ambushing them.
Freddie kept his eyes on the leader who merely just stood there, scouring the entire desert sand. There was something off about this Shadow sorcerer just standing there, he had to be plotting something.
Suddenly out of nowhere Freddie felt three steel blades being shot into his back. He arched himself but as he turned around he was caught by surprise as the figure of the leader fired some type of gas at him, all the awhile saying BOO!
Freddie swatted the air but it was too late. His vision soon started flashing back to the day his entire race was killed.
“Aww, having trouble?” the leader’s voice (sounding thunderous, haunting, almost demonic). Freddie saw the leader’s eyes glowing the same haunting blue as Thomas Riddle Deacon’s eyes. The very same cold blue eyes that stared back at him as he slaughtered each and every Naga. “Watch the stars, have a drink!”
Freddie began thrashing around trying to get rid of this horrifying memory but all he kept seeing was blood spurting, the flash of green light, and the agonizing screams of his family. He soon felt some sort of liquid being dumped onto him as the Shadow Sorcerer continued to taunt him.
“You look like a snake who takes himself too seriously.” His palm soon sparked out a blue fireball and as Freddie finally went calm for a split second to look up at the wizard, he told Freddie. “You want my opinion? You need to lighten up.” He threw the blue fireball at Freddie and soon he was being burned alive.
The leader soon disappeared into the shadows as Freddie screamed in pure agony. The blue flames eating away at his coils like a hot grinder slowly and torturously burning away every inch of his skin. Somehow he managed to send a telepathic cry for help to John who immediately woke up.
“Freddie!” John shot up exclaiming which soon woke everyone up. Brian’s elvish hearing soon heard Freddie’s torturous screaming.
“Come on!” everyone soon left the tent and raced to help the Naga. Suddenly all the lights in their tent came on and the shadows soon came alive.
Razor sharp teeth and red eyes surrounded them as they now felt themselves being bound by the shadows. John tried to break free but he soon heard the very same thing happening to the tent next to them. And the home after that, until the entire Medjai was either screaming in terror or with their last dying breath.
“Hello John, remember me?” soon entering the tent with Ardeth also trapped within his grasp was a lean stature man with short black hair, ice blue eyes, a strong jawline and skin as pale as the moon. He looked to be about his mid-30’s possibly even 40s. But it was his voice.
His voice that was soft and lulling like a lullaby, but it held an icy, haunting tone to it as well.
“Jonathan Corvus.” He smirked.
“It really has been too long. How’s little Fina been?” John snarled softly but soon let out a groan as he felt himself being squeezed tighter by Johnathan’s magic. “And you know, it is very surprising to not see her here with you. I mean back at school you guys were—heh stuck together like glue.”
“Dad, you actually know this son of a bitch?” Seraffel asked.
“Now that is quite rude. Didn’t your parents ever teach you manners?” A shadow spear shot out and struck Seraffel in his thigh. He let out a painful scream.
“Seraffel!” Thor screamed. Seraffel groaned and growled in pain.
“Dragons always were quite brutish for my taste. But I guess that’s why you and sweet, sweet Fina adopted these monsters. Freaks till the end.” The shadow spear slowly went deeper into Seraffel’s thigh. The blood now starting to ooze further down his pant leg, he threw back his head trying to hold in his agonizing screams.
“What do you want from us Corvus!?” John demanded.
“Well truthfully we were ordered to take you and your little band of monsters to see your dear old grandfather but it seems we’re one short. So—you’re coming with us till you tell us where Serafina Black is.”
The last thing any of them ever saw was pure darkness as the shadows wrapped around them till they couldn’t breathe.
*2nd Person POV*
You kept following your grandfather’s voice until you came out towards the Nile River. Whatever light from the moon directed itself into the water, almost giving it a crystal like glow to it. Panting after running so hard you couldn’t hear your grandfather’s voice anymore.
“Granddad?” you called out. “Granddad!” again nothing but silence. Suddenly something whooshed behind you. “G-Granddad?” soon a figure appears out of thin air. He had a black hooded cloak covering himself from whatever light there was and he just stood there silently for what felt like eternity. His hands slowly came up and you were frozen with fear at just who was now standing a few feet away from you.
John’s grandfather, Grindelwald Deacon.
You quickly take out John’s wand from your hip and aim it at him. Even though your hands and legs were trembling with fear you tried to stay strong.
“You stay right there! I know who you are!”
“(Y/n) (L/n). I am not here to hurt you.” His soft whisper of a voice said to you. Hearing him speak in the flashback was one thing but now that he was actually standing here before you it—it made you feel……cold. “I only want to help.”
“Help me?!” you snapped quietly.
“Yes.” He told you. “You are so very, very far away from home. Far away from everything that you know, far from those that you love.” You thought back to your family. You hadn’t even really been keeping them updated on everything since you took the job in trying to discover John and Serafina’s secret club.
No, no he’s manipulating you! You’ve seen this before with John the night Serafina’s family was slaughtered don’t. fall. For it!
“I said don’t take another step!” you warned. But your façade was easily dropping as your hand trembled even worse. And still, he kept walking closer and closer to you.
“My child, I would never see you harmed. Unlike with what the Naga has told you.” What? What is he talking about. “Dear one, it is not your fault that your very birth was planned to go along with the Naga’s plan for vengeance. It is not your fault that you were forced into this world, if you were siding alongside me I would ensure that you were free to live your life. A world where your very existence is not meant to satisfy someone else’s gain.”
Even though you wanted to strike this man down, no matter how much rage and fear was starting to build up within you…….he was right.
Everyone so far has kept calling you the ‘Human Savior’. You didn’t ask for any of this. And why did it have to be you? Sure you might have gone along with it but now—now it was starting to feel like a game to you. That your only purpose for even existing was just to satisfy Freddie’s plan.
“I—I……” you loosened your grip on your wand. Grindelwald’s hand slowly comes up and wraps his fingers around John’s wand.
“You are an innocent. So go now. Leave this place, return to the life that you know.” With that he apparated into smoke and disappeared from your view.
You debated and debated long and hard. Yes you had come this far already but—was it really worth it? Why did it have to be you? Why couldn’t someone else take this job? Clearly John and Serafina have something to gain out of saving all these creatures as well as their entire community, why did you need to be involved?
Suddenly something pierced right through your back. Although no blood spurted out from you, you still felt like something was piercing your very soul. Your right arm suddenly shot out and twisted itself inward.
What—what was happening to you? You tried to resist but each time you did, you were forced to contort and twist about until you were pulled to your knees.
“What’s…….”
“Thought you would realize just what we were? Guess Muggles really are as stupid as they come.” Soon coming out was a strong-bulky looking man who had shadow-like tentacle arms coming out from behind him, his hands seeping out a black aura (much like John and Serafina’s magical aura).
“Shadow sorcerer.”
“Oh look it does speak.” You narrowed your eyes at the insult but your eyes were forced to go wide-eyed. “Such manners, nothing but beyond neanderthal anger. Running about like starving goblins.” You soon felt yourself being lifted up into the air, still unable to gain even the slightest ounce of control back.
“What did—you do…..with my…..friends?”
“The same thing I’m about to do to you, muggle.” In a flash, the shadows shot right towards you until you were cocooned in complete blackness.

12 Prompts of Christmas - #10 Santa
TEN - Santa
Standing on the New York City sidewalks wearing jeans and an oversized red Santa coat, Richard Castle gathered together the group of pre-teens trailing behind him and lined them up against the side of the building to address them. They were all festively dressed in some way: one girl had a headband that also mimicked elf ears, another had a hair clip fashioned out of a Christmas wrap bow, and a third wore a festive sweater beneath her purple coat. Rick’s own child was fully decked out with a green ribbon in her hair, Christmas tree shaped earrings, and bells tied onto her shoes with red ribbons.
Smiling down at them, he asked, “Okay ladies, are we ready?”
“Yeah!” they chorused back to him.
“Great. Then we’re all ready to go but remember: stay close to me while we’re inside. You wouldn’t want someone to accidentally think you’re a police officer,” he told them with a dramatic wink.
“Dad,” his daughter, Alexis, groaned.
Rick held up a finger signaling for her to hold on a moment. Then, he donned his red Santa hat and from his pocket he pulled out a white fake beard which he hooked on using loops that went over his ears. Once it was in place, he reminded her, “Not Dad—Santa.”
Now fully outfitted, Rick led the parade of kids into the police station, proud he was getting to spend his afternoon not only helping the hard-working members of the NYPD, but also teaching impressionable young girls an important lesson about giving back and being kind.
Inside the police station Rick walked up to the welcome desk and pleasantly said, “Good afternoon.”
The cop at the desk eyed him a bit suspiciously and asked, “Can I help you, sir?”
“Yes, I called ahead. Richard Castle. The elves and I are here to deliver Christmas cards to the brave officers of the NYPD,” he said, stepping aside and gesturing towards the four girls clustered around him, who each held a shopping bag filled with goodies.
Now smiling, the female officer nodded and reached for the telephone on her desk. “Ah, right. Hold on, I’ll call an escort for you.”
“Thank you very much.”
The group waited patiently for about five minutes before a woman dressed in a black business suit approached them and asked, “Hi, I’m Denise from PR; are you from Spenser Academy?”
“That’s us!” one of the girls exclaimed.
The woman smiled at her, then addressed the group as a whole, “Well on behalf of the NYPD I’d like to thank you for your generous gifts. What have you brought us today?”
“We have about three dozen holiday cards and some handmade ornaments and decorations to hang up if that’s okay,” Rick said to Denise.
“Absolutely! We appreciate everything you’re willing to give to us. Let’s go to the third floor, okay? they haven’t had any Christmas visitors yet.”
“Have you had many other schools visit this year?” Rick asked as they shuffled their way towards the elevator. He knew there were several other groups from Alexis’s grade as well as the one above hers participating in the holiday cheer project, though some were donating décor and cards to fire stations and hospitals as well as the NYPD. He also believed other private schools in the city were participating in similar projects.
“Just one other one here so far, but I’ve had several others at other precincts.”
“That’s nice. It’s such an important time of year to give back.”
“I agree. You’re a teacher at the school?”
Rick checked and put his hand on Alexis’s shoulder. “No, no—parent volunteer. This is my daughter, Alexis.”
“Hi,” the young redhead said demurely.
Denise smiled down at her. “Hello. Well, we do appreciate your time.”
Rick nodded in appreciation. He had always enjoyed volunteering at Alexis’s school and never really thought of it as a chore or even an obligation. As someone who loved children, he found it a joy. Plus, as his career enabled him to be both a full-time writer and a full-time stay-at-home Dad, he always felt a duty to volunteer for what he could because he knew that many of Alexis’s classmates had two working parents, and it was not always possible for them to chaperone field trips or organize bake sales like he could.
When the elevator’s doors opened again and Denise led the way out into the hall, Rick asked her, “What department is this?”
“The homicide division.”
“Ah,” Rick said hesitantly. While he wouldn’t have minded poking around that floor, he wasn’t sure it was entirely appropriate for ten- and eleven-year-old girls. Nevertheless, their visit was not intended to be a long one, so he stepped forward and turned so he could address his group. “Well, okay ladies, here we go. How about…Paige and Hannah hand out the cards while Alexis, Ryder, and I hang up some decorations, okay?”
Their girls swapped their shopping bags around to match up with Rick’s duty assignments and then the two with the holiday cards scampered off. Meanwhile, Denise directed Rick and the remaining two girls to a room centrally located on the floor. “You can hang your decorations here in the break room.”
“Perfect. Thank you,” Rick said to her and led the way inside the room. It was empty save for an officer talking on a cell phone, who walked out the opposite door when they entered. Rick led the girls over to one of the tables in the room and they opened up their shopping bags and began to unload the decorations. From the bag he carried, Rick pulled out a few rolls of tape. He handed one to Ryder and told her to hang up the snowflake decorations they had on the break room windows. Then, he turned to his daughter and asked, “Do you want to hang up the snowmen?”
She nodded. “Yeah, let’s put some on the cabinets,” she said, pointing towards the kitchenette in the room which had a sink along with a counter that had a coffee maker, toaster oven, and microwave. Off to the side was a refrigerator, all of which was surrounded by cabinets.
“Sounds good.”
Alexis put a snowman centrally located on each of the doors to the bottom row of cabinets. Then Rick brought a chair over from one of the tables so she could climb up on it and reach the upper cabinets. She was still too short, though, so he had to help hang the last row of snowmen.
He was about halfway done when he heard the breakroom door swing open and a female’s voice say, “Oh! I didn’t realize anyone else was in here.”
“Yep, sorry; we’ll be done in a minute,” Rick said as he struggled to get the sticky tape out of the dispenser.
“We’re decorating!” Alexis said.
“I can see that,” said the female voice.
With the last snowman tacked into place, Rick stepped back, helped his daughter off the chair, then quickly grabbed it so it was not in the way if the woman wanted to access the kitchenette counter. “Sorry about that,” he said again, only glancing briefly in her direction, “Alexis, what else do you want to hang up?”
“Let’s put the stars on the refrigerator,” she suggested.
Rick hesitated and glanced over his shoulder to see what the woman was doing. When he saw her at the coffee pot, he agreed with, “Okay, but let’s make sure not to stand in this nice lady’s way.”
“Oh, it’s fine; I don’t need to get into the fridge,” she assured them. With her mug now full of coffee, she turned to face them and Rick finally met her eye. Immediately, he felt like he’d been smacked in the chest. Her face…he knew her face, but from where?
“Are you a police officer?” Alexis asked the woman as she hung up the stars.
“A detective, actually.”
“Ohh!! I’m in fifth grade, but I might want to be a detective when I grow up—a private detective, just like Sherlock Holms!”
“Oh wow, that’s neat!” the detective said.
“Santa, I finished hanging the snowflakes. Santa? Santa!”
“Wha—oh, sorry Ryder,” Rick apologized, when Ryder tugged on the sleeve of his coat. He’d been too busy staring at the female detective wondering where he’d seen her before. “What do you want to hang up next?”
“Um…maybe some of the garland chain along that window ledge?”
“Sure thing.” Rick walked over to the shopping bags and pulled out the long chain of “garland” the girls had made, which consisted of round circles of alternating light and green construction paper all stapled together to form a chain. “Alexis why don’t you come and help Ryder once you’re done with those stars?”
“Okay, Da—Santa!” She grinned at him then ran past him to help her schoolmate.
When Rick turned back around, he was pleasantly surprised to see the female detective was still in the breakroom, eyeing him curiously. “Sorry, ah, this is our first year as a decorating committee; we’re a little rough around the edges.”
“Oh, that’s okay. I think what you’re doing is really nice. Are you…are you also associated with the two girls running around giving away Christmas cards?”
The writer frowned behind his Santa beard. “Oh no are they running? I told them not to run.”
She laughed and said, “It’s fine,” but the words barely registered in his mind because with her laugh came the solid recognition he’d been seeking. Yes, he definitely recognized her, but he could hardly believe it was her—her—the woman he’d encountered so briefly their interaction felt more like a dream.
So caught up by the sudden recognition, Rick failed to realize he’d gasped, “Oh—it’s you!” out loud until her brow wrinkled and she asked, “Excuse me?”
“Sorry, sorry. I mean—you’re Kate, aren’t you?”
Her brow crinkled further. “Do we know each other?”
“Yea—oh, sorry. Crap! Sorry!” he grunted as he tried to strip off his fake beard and hat, which until that moment he had forgotten that he was wearing. No wonder she didn’t recognize him!
With his face fully exposed her confused expression melted into one of surprise. “Oh! Rick. H-hi.”
“Hi,” he echoed, his grin a bit dopey. Once again, he had run into this mysterious, beautiful woman by chance and he could not say he was remotely disappointed about it. Since they’d first met, five Decembers prior, he’d thought about her occasionally over the years, mostly over the holidays, but occasionally during trips out to his beach house since the water combined with the vacation atmosphere connected it and the lake cabin in his mind. He’d never gotten to the point of actually trying to find her, but he’d thought about it several times. Now, it appeared fate was nudging him and he wasn’t going to deny it.
“We’re done!”
His daughter announcing the completion of their task pulled Rick back to the present and he stammered a bit. “Oh, um, ah, yeah—is there anything left to hang up, girls?”
“No,” Alexis said. She gazed around the room and frowned slightly, adding, “I guess we didn’t have that much to decorate with.”
“Oh no—I think it looks much more festive in here,” Kate chimed in.
Rick gave her a grateful expression then turned back to the girls. “Okay, ladies, why don’t you gather up the bags and tape dispensers and then let’s go find the others, okay?”
“Thank you for decorating our break room,” Kate said to them before heading towards the door. Before she could open it, Rick stepped towards her.
“Wait! I mean, um, how are you?”
Looking slightly amused she said, “I’m okay, how are you?”
“Good, good. Um, I was just…well, wondering if I might be able to take you out for coffee and, um, pick your brain a little bit about the NYPD. Always doing research,” he confessed with a little shrug. In reality his heart was racing, and he felt like a teenager again. God, what was he doing? He wasn’t even trying to ask her out on a date as his romantic situation was…complicated…at present.
She arched an eyebrow at him. “If I recall correctly: you already did that.”
He shrugged one shoulder. “But you weren’t a detective then.”
She chuckled lightly and then waited about seven seconds before agreeing, “Okay, sure. Coffee.”
“Great!” Rick said, elated. He fumbled for a moment, trying to get his wallet out of his back pocket when the bulky Santa coat hung down over it, but he managed. Then he handed her a business card and said, “Call me, please? we’ll set something up.”
She took the card with a nod. By that time, the girls had collected their bags and had joined them at the breakroom door, so Kate pushed it open and let them all walk out. As they did so, Alexis wished her a merry Christmas and she reciprocated with, “Merry Christmas to you, too; and thanks again for the decorations.”
“You’re welcome!” Alexis said cheerfully.
After giving Rick a head nod, Kate walked off. He watched her disappear into the crowd of her coworkers until the high-pitched squeal of a ten-year-old girl drew his attention and he knew he needed to get back into chaperone-mode before the girls caused too much more chaos for the homicide floor.

Alright.
There are a lot of conflicting emotions about having The Music Man kicking out Beetlejuice from the Winter Garden. Although I am bitter that one of my favourite musicals is being replaced in favour of money and two big names is just.. not sitting right, but I am open to everything and trying to look at everything with open eyes and an unbiased opinion.
Did Will Blum’s influence this a little? Yes.
Was the post a little unsound and unprofessional? I think so but it brought up some great points.
Yes, I agree. The fact that you are selling a name instead of a GREAT show is disrespect to the source material. Hugh Jackman is an awesome guy and his tenure as the Boy From Oz is forever embedded into Broadway his(her)story as being a stepping stone for Hugh’s career. Also you have Broadway star, Sutton Foster, another big name who, if you are a theatre lover, can’t help but fawn and scream in excitement.
We all know and love Hugh Jackman as the Wolverine/James Howlett/ Logan, that’s what people associate him as such. Fun fact he played that role from 2000-2018. Wolverine is known to be big, all muscle and raw strength, but in the theatre world we know him as a musical theatre actor. Jackman first claim to international's fame was in 1999 when he played the leading man, Curly McLain, in the film adaptation of Oklahoma! He played the titular character Peter Allen in Boy from Oz in 2004 which he won a Tony for and Jean Valjean in the film adaptation of Les Miserables in 2012 while that wasn't the best adaptation of that musical, they did include Broadway and West End actors which was awesome! And lastly the most recent entry musical/film role was P.T Barnum in The Greatest Showman, Jackman went on tour last year singing songs from The Greatest Showman and some other songs from other musicals he previously worked in. He is an amazing vocalist, actor and dancer. His performance in Boy From Oz says as such in a review by Charles Isherwood: praising Jackman but panned the show: "Jackman is giving a vital and engaging performance in this pitifully flimsy musical almost in spite of the material he’s been handed. It’s a sad waste of an exciting talent." I’m pumped.
Sutton Foster is a Broadway actress that is well known for her two-time Tony award winning performance as Millie in Thoroughly Modern Millie. She has also roles from other shows such as: Chess, Funny Girl, Les Miserables, Anything Goes, Grease and MANY more. I knew her best as Reno Sweeney from Anything Goes, her vocals are nothing but extraordinary and her acting is nothing to sleep on, she is an excellent dancer and I cannot help to try and recreate in my bedroom when I’m alone. You can say all you want about her, but she is one of the Broadway actresses I know from the top of my head, alongside Patti LuPone, Sierra Boggess and Liza Minelli. She is also the younger sister of Hunter Foster of Little Shop of Horrors and Urinetown fame. Foster is going to be amazing as Jackman's partner in the upcoming production and honestly as a fan, I am so excited!
They are both triple threats but.. no one knows a lot about the Music Man. It is a classic and has been around since the late 50′s.
Broadway, coming into the new decade of 2020, is becoming more MODERN. All these new musicals that have come out during this past decade might not have made it to Broadway but they are more aligned with the changing times and modern settings. Though there are musicals based on films from the 80′s that reach out to that generation and reintroduce them into that mind space they were in back in the day.
American Idiot, great musical, angsty music but has that throwback niche to that rebellious stage some, or not most, of us went through in the 2000′s.
Elf, that also starred Will Blum at one point, is fan service to those who love the holiday season and those who loved the film that came out in 2003. I haven't listened to it yet BUT I WILL EVENTUALLY.
Heathers, we all love the Heathers. Also Winona Ryder, who played Lydia Deetz in the 1988 Beetlejuice film, starred as Veronica Sawyer. Like Elf, IT BRINGS INTEREST TO THAT GENERATION SO THEY COULD BUY TICKETS TO THIS SHOW THAT WAS BASED ON A FILM THEY WATCHED AS TEENS. Also can we just forget about the horrible rendition of Candy Store done by the cast of Riverdale? That never happened. NEVER. HAPPENED.
Beetlejuice, Come From Away, Ghost, Once, Book of Mormon, Finding Neverland, Newsies, Kinky Boots, Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, Big Fish, 21 Chump Street, Amélie, Be More Chill, Hamilton, Head Over Heels, Lazarus, School of Rock, Something Rotten!, Tuck Everlasting, Waitress, Anastasia, Hadestown, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Prom, Ain’t Too Proud, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Frozen, Mean Girls, Six, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, The Lightning Thief, Jagged Little Pill, Moulin Rouge!, The Cher Show, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, & Juliet, Mrs. Doubtfire.
These are SOME of the MANY shows that came out this decade!
Some musicals are entirely satirical so that was a niche for audiences who love the weird and messed up humour, some musicals are named after the films or shows they were based off of. So old audiences can take interest into coming to Broadway, okay I get that because again, nostalgia, some are entirely original or had little to no source material! Some are based around history, some about civil rights issues and some of them are jukebox musicals that appeal to people who like those artists.
Broadway has always been conservative and prefers to play it safe when it comes to opening a new productions and the dominant audiences have been older and more traditional. So that stereotypical Broadway show people think of is just that, the lead character getting their “want song” in, a lot of dancing, internal or external conflict that ultimately gets resolved with cheerful songs and set pieces. Although newer audiences want those boundary pushing shows so CAN get introduced to musicals like the Music Man, it means nothing if they were never introduced to the strange and unusual first. Everyone wants to advance to find that next big thing but they can’t do that when it is all safe but we did get some of them with Cats, Beetlejuice, Carrie, Matilda The Addams Family and more.
I totally get the interest of bringing back a musical that hasn’t been on Broadway for 20 years (last performance was in 2000) and it is a great way to reintroduce an old piece back into the world again, but it was at the expense of new artists making their Broadway dream a reality. The decision to evict, not close, evict Beetlejuice from the Winter Garden was a big mistake by the Schubert Organization. The Schubert Organization is one of the biggest landlord of theatres in New York, they at least own 17 Broadway theatres. Here’s the reason why they’re so successful:
They don’t keep shows that don't bring the cold hard cash. It’s show business, it has always been about the business and never about the show. As much as we could scream and shout to keep Beetlejuice in the Winter Garden all we want, it is unfortunately their decision to keep them or boot them out. We all know that productions have to be approved by a theatre organization so that production can be leant one of their many theatres, they show also had to keep up a total of sales from tickets above that number per week. As all of you know, that’s what happened with Beetlejuice. Ticket sales dried up and fell way below the amount. There was talk around the theatre community that a production of the Music Man was in the works with Hugh Jackman as the lead. So... they saw Beetlejuice as dead weight and sought out to cash in on Hugh Jackman’s name and fame.
There was a lot of problems from the show but most of their problems came from the critics. Mixed reviews was all the show got but the biggest blows came from the New York Times and Ben Brantley saying that the show never came to that same conclusion of home and belonging like other Broadway shows. This killed their ticket sales cause everyone goes through those reviews before they see a show. However that’s the thing, Beetlejuice never wanted that. The entire creative team and the cast knew that what they had was entirely unconventional, like it was their way sticking of the middle finger at the word conventional.
There's no doubt that the Music Man, Hugh Jackman, Sutton Foster and the cast and creative team will be amazing at the Winter Garden and it is highly unfortunate that the eviction of Beetlejuice was done for the sake of financial greed. I’m glad they were only evicted and not closed, the show IS still on and the public demand for the show is high. I know a lot of us hate the decision but what could you do? It’s all about the business aspect of Broadway and never the show.
Even though Beetlejuice had its problems with its opening following the Harvey Weinstein controversy, having the Music Man revival during this time of political conflict is a little awkward. Let’s trade a sexual, murderous demon for a eulogized conman.. that seems right.
I’m sure the show will be fantastic but the circumstances leading up to the opening is shady and not shining a good light for the Schubert Organization but lets not hate the actors and the creative team of the Music Man, they didn't do anything wrong. Instead, point that dislike to corporate greed, but is okay. The show is not closed and is only evicted from the theatre. Eventually they will find a new theatre on or off Broadway for everyone’s enjoyment again! Also that National Tour is coming up in Fall 2021 I believe, I personally can’t just fly to New York but I will be watching the National Tour if it does roll by where I live.
Keep safe my friends 💚🤍🖤
