Building Custom Stool Seats from Scrap Wood
youtube
Things I Used in This Project: ISOtunes Bluetooth Hearing Protection Ultimiate Workbench Plans CrossCut Sled Titebond Original Wood Glue Rockler Surefoot Clamps Triton Router Infinity Spiral Bit Carpet Tape Triton SuperJaws Large Compass Large ROS Palm ROS Triton Router Table Infinity Round Over Bit Infinity Chamfer Bit Push Blocks Bench Cookies Dust Collection Cart RIDGID Round Shop Vac Universal Small Port Hose Kit Dust Right Separator Wipe On Poly
These seats are actually something I’ve been wanting to tackle for a while. They are inspired by a fabulous NY based furniture maker named Ethan Abramson. He has these stools he builds that he calls Maze Stools, that are made from different woods and have a very random yet elegant look to them. With Matt Cremona and I only having a single day to knock something out, I figured it was the perfect project. I also thought it would be cool to incorporate a scrap from Matt’s shop so I told him to toss something into his suitcase for me. Of course, it being Matt he brought me a beautiful piece of airdried walnut that he milled himself.
To get started we rounded up some other cut off of hardwoods from my lumber rack. I had two good chunks of walnut then found some maple and Matt found some small pieces of curley maple. We divided them up then started playing with our designs. The great thing about this project is there is no right or wrong, mine is pretty simple whereas Matt went a little crazier with his, even throwing some end grain into the mix.
Since we are dealing with scraps, almost all the boards are different thicknesses. Later we will plane our seats down but right now I just got the boards close by resawing them at the bandsaw.
I was aiming for my seat to be around 14” so while I was building up mine I would use a tape just to make sure I was getting the weigh and height needed on the initial build up. Once that looked good, I started playing with adding more to the design. I wanted a strip of maple across the top so I grab a thinner strip, placed it where it looked good and used a pencil to mark on the bottom walnut, it’s location. Then I took it over to the table saw and cut along these pencil marks. This allowed to insert the maple strip where I removed the material.
With the general arrangement of our seats figured out, we started on the first glue up. Since I don’t yet have a jointer, we used my crosscut sled at the table saw to get the glueing edges nice and flat then started clamping things together. This part is a little funky because lots of things are cut at angles so they want to slip and slide once you start applying pressure with the clamps. But! We both played with it enough and got things to hold together.
After letting that set for an hour or so, we unclamped our pieces and started cleaning up the edges for round two. On mine, I just cut the left side flush so I could add another board Maple to the edge. Then Matt cut his slides flush to add more walnut and curley maple to both sides.
After letting round two glue ups dry, Matt attached the adjustable circle cutting router base to the router, then we turned these funky little creations into circles. You can see we placed a spoil board below the seat just to protect my new workbench top, then used carpet tape which is a strong double sided tape, to hold down the seat. Matt’s glue up was a tad bit smaller than mine so he went with a smaller diameter for his seat. We used a spiral upcut bit made by Infinity to make this cut, and since it’s pretty thick we took three passes to cut all the way though.
One tip to remember if you do this project is to attach your seat upside down, so that what will end up being the top of the seat is facing the workbench. This will make the screw hole from attaching the router in the bottom where it will be unseen instead of the top.
With that done, next we moved the seats and the SuperJaws outside because next step was to dish out the seat some. For this we were using my power carvers with the sanding attachment on them. To give a visual reference to follow, we used a compass to pencil on an offset line then just started sanding away material.
And I’m curious on what other methods there are for dishing out seats that might be quicker. Although this process wasn’t too bad. Matt only took about 15 mins to get his dished, then enjoyed the nice Texas weather while I took a little bit longer to complete mine.
Anyways, back to the project…..next we cleaned up the dish and also the edges with the palm ros sander. Or well, I used the sander, Matt used the spokeshave. Which I think proves power tools and hand tools can be friends. Just sayin….
Before applying finished, we took our seats over to the router table and used a 1/2” round over bit to round off the top edge. This not only looks a little nicer but will also make it feel nicer on the back of the legs when actually using the seat. Then something I did on mine is I placed a small chamfer on the bottom edge of the seat.
After he signed the bottom, he applied two coats of Danish oil. And my goodness that’s pretty.
Matt and I actually made these back in August and two seats is just not enough for my shop. So I decided to make some more, but I loved the concept of including scraps from friends and having a piece of them in the shop. So for the past few months, if I knew I would be seeing a friend, I would tell them to toss a scrap into their luggage for me and I’ve come away with quite the haul. I ended up with enough to make at least six more stools so that’s what I did.
I mixed and match the pieces to get a modge podge sort of look, but I also tried to maintain good aestics with color coordinating. One thing I didn’t pay any mind to is grain direction. Wood of course expands and contracts so typically you want to keep the grain all going the same way so it moves together and doesn’t bust apart, but these pieces are so small I don’t think it will create an issue. But hey, we’ll see. The two Matt and I made this summer are still looking perfect if that’s any indication.
Something I made this go round to help with visualizing is a cardboard cutout. I used 14” as a template then could place this ring over my working piece to see if I liked the direction it was going or where on the board I wanted the circle placed.
You can see that I placed a small sheet of wax paper under each one of my glue ups, this is just to keep me from gluing it down to my workbench. : ) Each seat had at least two glue ups, if not three but since I was building so many I was easily able to keep busy making another while things were drying.
Of course this is a really great project to use up some smaller scraps but I think this would be a really fun group project. Call up some woodworker friends, everybody bring one or two pieces of wood and gather in somebody’s shop (whoever has the most clamps) then spend the day building a seat for your space while enjoying friends company then everybody gets to leave with a momento that’s useable.
It’s really cool to look them all at the end and see just how varied each one can be. It’s also funny to see what they look like after all the glue ups….at this point I was thinking “hmmmm, these are funky to say the least”. But I will tell you that after cutting them down into a circle, they look muuuuuch better.
Now since I had so many, I used double sided tape to temporarily secure all of them down to my workbench and this made going over each one with my sander a little bit quicker rather than placing them one by one into my SuperJaws.
Next up, will be making some bases to go with these tops. I have a pretty fun idea I can’t wait to try out, so stay tuned for my next video to see them complete. Big thank you to my friends and viewers who contributed a scrap for these seats.

The 19th Annual PPG Syracuse Nationals
There’s just something magical about the sound of a hopped-up V-8 to raise your adrenalin level. Couple this with the chance to hit the open road during the summer months and the combination is endless for the potential trips you could take. Regardless of whether it’s to a local cruise night, a highway run to simply knock off some miles, or planning a trip to a national event, one thing for sure is that seat time in your hot rod or custom makes the journey extra special. Pulling into town to check into a large event raises the cool factor to the highest level.
Wayne Earle | 1951 Chevy | Gasburg, VA There’s something cool about a lowered Chevy custom that commands your attention. Kentz Kustomz set the stance and added just the right amount of allure, including frenched headlights and a custom grille with power coming from a warmed-over 350ci Chevy mill. The PPG Sun Kiss coating and panel-painted roof completes the look.
This year’s PPG Syracuse Nationals celebrated its 19th anniversary as one of the largest rodding events on the East Coast. If you dig hot rods, customs, classic trucks, muscles cars, restos, and race cars the assemblage of horsepower on this three-day weekend festival was enough to leave you breathless. Visually you were greeted at every corner by a virtual kaleidoscope of candy-coated colors, giving you a perfect base to see just where the weekend would take you.
Randy Weaver | 1931 Ford | Sandy, UT Chopped, channeled, and laced with attitude, this Model A packed a healthy dose of venom thanks to the team at Weaver Customs. Sitting on a custom chassis complete with a Heidts IFS, it showcased a 401ci Ford V-8 with twin-turbos rolling on wheels from Detroit Steel. The subtle Axalta Sand Bronze vibe added a level of classic elegance.
After checking in to get your credentials, a cruise over to the pristine New York State Fairgrounds sets the stage for the event as it unfolds across well over 365 acres. The massive facility is like stepping back in time as you motor through countless tree-lined streets flanked by numerous classic buildings as well as horse and livestock barns. When the need to feed hits you have an endless stream of choices, thanks to old-time eateries across the grounds, offering plenty of choices to bring back memories from when you were a youngster. Once settled it’s easy to head out and weave through literally thousands of cars and trucks as well as check out all of the vendors showcasing the latest cool parts for your ride.
Rick Bolea | 1933 Ford | Moon Township, PA Rick’s coupe is pure hot rod. Completed by Precision Hot Rods & Fabrication, the body features a perfectly balanced chop accented by a custom hood top and sides along with immaculate PPG Red Mahogany gloss. Power comes from a dual-quad-fed 427ci Ford FE V-8 with Real Rodders wheels wrapped with BFGoodrich tires to plant the power.
There were numerous scheduled tech seminars from industry leaders, including PPG, Inland Empire, LEED Brakes, and Morrisville State College to guide you through a number of topics. New this year was a Pro Builders Panel presented by Ingersoll Rand, which was an open forum moderated by Jerry Dixey of STREET RODDER for participants to ask questions of builders Dave Tucci, Dom Tucci, Chris Ryan, Rob Ida, and Jeremy Baye, which was a great success. The Tucci Hot Rods Pro Pick area was once again packed with participants as live bands performed on numerous stages throughout the fairgrounds, all wrapped up by nightly fireworks displays.
Tom Cochran | 1955 Chevy | Wilmington, DE The designers at Chevrolet hit a home run with the Nomad. Bringing it to the next level starts with a bitchin stance from a custom IFS and rear suspension linked to Nitto tires on big-inch Ridler wheels powered by an LT1 V-8. A custom interior by Lucky 7 was accented by a flawless body wearing BASF Lamborghini orange and white pearl.
But wait there’s more, as the Old-Skool Roundup located in a separate open-air pavilion is a show-within-a-show featuring a wicked grouping of traditional hot rods and customs accented by a vintage swap meet and razor-sharp Rockabilly bands. Race car fans could check out Gasoline Alley where classic array of Funny Cars, Gassers, Bonneville racers, and more celebrated history. Competition this year for the Winfield Award among the Select Six presented by custom car legend Gene Winfield was exhilarating, with the win going to Chris Ryan or Ryan’s Rod & Kustom for his decadent 1956 Lincoln Continental Mark II known as “The Scarlet Lady.” Artie’s Party Pinstriping and Panel Jam to benefit The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central New York has become legendary with custom designed artwork auctioned throughout the weekend.
Preston Carden Jr. | 1956 Chevy | Newcastle, DE Gassers are the ultimate statement, especially when they’re set up like Carden’s. A Speedway Motors suspension gave it the right-on stance with a Borla Induction stack-injected 421ci mill linked to a TREMEC five-speed adding go. Halibrand wheels and Firestone rubber are cool while a PPG shine and a classic bench interior finishes it.
Once Sunday arrived it was time for the Syracuse Nationals giveaway program showcasing the Garage Gear Giveaway to one lucky participant. By the time the weekend came to a close over 8,200 cars had motored across the pavement along with 95,000 visitors. With the support of the Central New York Car Club Association (the hosts of the show) and area service clubs, donations were made from proceeds of the event in the amount of $20,000 plus $68,000 from the Panel Jam auctions to a number of local charities plus additional donations, bringing the yearly total to $95,000. This brought the 19-year donation total to $1.4 million. As this event continues to grow with each passing year we can’t wait to check it out again in 2019 for the 20th anniversary. You can see more at rightcoastcars.com.
Dave & Sue Ciappa | 1955 Chevy | Lockport, NY If you want to haul with style look no further. A subtle chop is accented by a lustrous coating of Axalta platinum and pearl white combined with RideTech ’bags and Schott wheels on Michelin rubber. A Chevy 406ci V-8 brings power and Wilwood brakes add stopping power. Inside Vintage Air and Classic Instruments track the cooling and vitals.
Lisa Wilsey | 1933 Ford | Whitesboro, NY Roadsters in the summertime personify hot rodding. Tucci Hot Rods nailed it with this drop-top packing a hopped-up small-block linked to a 700-R4 trans to spin 17- and 20-inch Dodge Nitro rims topped with Coker tires. PPG Deep Sea Metallic brings it to life, accented by tan vinyl and custom interior panels by Dom Tucci Design.
Gary Corkell | 1932 Ford | Middletown, DE Built in 10 weeks by One-Off Rod & Custom, this Deuce started with a body and chassis combination from Adams Hot Rod Shop. It was treated to a searing 357ci V-8 topped with a sextet Speedway Motors 9Super7 carbs linked to a TH350 trans. Coated in custom PPG Blue Sugar it rolls on Wheel Vintiques wheels and Coker/Firestone rubber.
Gef Freese | 1954 Ford | Pittsfield, NH To set a wicked stance, Traditional Speed and Custom incorporated an Art Morrison chassis with IFS and a Winters quick-change out back. Power comes from a Roush 427ci IR crate engine topped with stack injection linked to a TREMEC T56 trans. Coated in Nason red it rolls on Vintage wheels and features a Petter Davidsen full leather interior.
Derrick & Katie Pesko | 1927 Ford | Waterford, CT Injecting a neat ’60s vibe this T sets the pace with a refreshing PPG white body accented with ice blue lines. Built by Allstar Hot Rods it features their signature chassis with a Speedway Motors 5-inch dropped front axle and GM 10-bolt rear. A 350ci V-8 adds power and inside shortened 1952 Olds dash, bomber seats, and fur carpet look awesome.
Best Ford in a Ford Bob Casey’s 1954 Ford Sunliner
While honoring the 19th Syracuse Nationals it was a perfect time for STREET RODDER and Ford Performance to recognize street rodders who install a late-model Ford engine in a Ford hot rod or custom. While canvassing the massive confines of the New York State Fairgrounds we found Bob Casey’s immaculate 1954 Ford Sunliner featuring a Ford Performance 351ci Windsor crate V-8, which caught our immediate attention.
It’s easy to see that Bob was destined to follow an automotive path since his influences were sparked when he first saw the family’s new 1949 Mercury parked in the garage. The car was bigger than life and although he needed a stepstool to see into the engine bay his fascination with its mechanical components fueled a passion. Following the path it wasn’t long till he graduated to customizing kit models at the kitchen table fueled by the latest issues of Hot Rod magazine and regular visits to local car dealerships to check out the newest models in person. Without a doubt the latest offerings from Ford and Mercury stood tall over all other manufacturers in his eyes.
Studying the latest creations by George Barris and watching 77 Sunset Strip to see the Kookie Car cruise the strip translated perfectly when he was able to help his cousin Jake nose and deck his 1947 Ford business coupe one summer. He eventually earned his driver’s license and the keys to a 1959 Ford Galaxie convertible with many more cool rides to follow, including a number of Ford hot rods and customs. Never forgetting his passion for ’50s-era Ford convertibles he eventually started searching for a suitable base to start with for his latest build. His quest led him to a 1954 Ford Sunliner in Illinois, which presented itself in pictures to be a nice solid driver. A deal was made and Bob had the car shipped to Ray Bartlett, co-owner of The East Coast Hot Rod Garage in Denton, Maryland, for evaluation. Since the car was going to be a full build, the team began disassembly, which led to the truth that the car had see far better days as it was riddled with hidden prior accident damage and an ample amount of rust. A plan was made to overcome the issues and start the build of a classic mild custom.
For a rock-solid base a call was made to Art Morrison for one of their Max G chassis featuring a mandrel-formed 2×4-inch fixture-welded frame. Out back a Ford 9-inch rear was packed with 3.50:1 gears spinning by Strange Engineering axles and suspended in place by a triangulated four-bar along with a matching antiroll bar and RideTech coilover shocks. Up front an exclusive Art Morrison IFS featuring their tubular steel control arms with matching spindles and antiroll bar combined with RideTech coilover shocks links to power rack-and-pinion steering. To add plenty of stopping power a Wilwood dual master pushes fluid through stainless lines to matching 12-inch drilled and vented discs and calipers anchored at each corner. Linking it all to the street are a set of classic 15-inch chrome reverse from Wheel Vintiques capped with wide whites from Diamond Back.
Wanting to maintain tradition and keep Ford power in his Sunliner, Bob went to Ford Performance Parts and selected their 351ci Windsor crate V-8 packed with 385 hp. The engine features a nodular iron crank linked to Ford rods wearing forged aluminum pistons urged by a factory cam. Up top plenty of seamless power comes from a pair of GT-40 aluminum cylinder heads perfectly matched to an Edelbrock intake capped with a matching 650-cfm carb wearing a 14-inch chrome air cleaner. An MSD ignition lights the fire with spent gases dumping though Sanderson headers to a custom 2-1/2-inch stainless exhaust with Flowmaster Series 50 mufflers. Neat details include a Billet Specialties Tru-Trac drive system along with Ford Racing valve covers. Custom touches to give the engine bay plenty of allure include a hand-fabricated firewall, radiator support, inner fenders panels, and radiator cover by team member Dale Rhodes. A Ford 4R70W trans massaged by Performance Automatics of Frederick, Maryland, moves the power to a custom steel driveshaft.
Bringing the weathered steel back to life wasn’t a task for the faint of heart. To start custom floors and body mounts were fabricated to meet the new chassis. The team followed with fabricating custom rear quarter-panels, eliminating the side skirts and raising the wheel openings by 2 inches while also creating a body side bead to match the front fenders. Other custom work included shaving the hood and decklid, frenching the headlights and taillights, shaving the bumpers, creating a custom roll pan, and adding a 1957 Thunderbird scoop to the hood. Team member Jason Lester then metal finished the body, set all the gaps, and prepared it for paint. To add the vibe he laid down a lustrous coating of custom-blended PPG Applegate Blue, bringing it all to life.
To add an equal amount of allure inside, the stock dash was treated to an engine-turned insert and filled with dials from Classic Instruments to monitor the vitals along with the restored factory speedometer. A 16-inch Ford Crestliner steering wheel plots the course while shifts move through a cool custom shifter fashioned from a cowl vent handle. Cool breezes are by Vintage Air with tunes from Sony and Pioneer, while a wiring kit from American Auto Wire was installed by shop co-owner Dean Alexander. To add plenty of luxury, Alexander then followed by covering a Glide Engineering bench and rear seat with yards of soft tan leather along with all side panels accented by complementing brown wool square-weave carpeting. He completed the car with a handmade tan Haartz convertible top. Congratulations to Bob who will receive a limited-edition jacket as the award winner.

Reasons Why Natural Wool Rugs are Perfect for NY Homes
Natural wool rugs are the perfect addition to any home in New York for several reasons. Firstly, the harsh winters in New York can often leave homes feeling cold and drafty. Natural wool rugs provide a warm and cozy atmosphere, helping to insulate the floors and keep the heat inside the home. This not only helps to save on energy bills, but also creates a more comfortable living space for residents during the colder months.
In addition to their insulating properties, natural wool rugs are also extremely durable and long-lasting. New York homes often see a lot of foot traffic and wear and tear, especially in high-traffic areas like the living room or hallway. Wool rugs are able to withstand this heavy use and remain looking beautiful for many years. They are also naturally stain-resistant, making them a practical choice for busy families or pet owners who may be concerned about spills or accidents.
Furthermore, natural wool rugs are a sustainable and eco-friendly choice for homeowners in New York. Wool is a renewable resource that is biodegradable, unlike synthetic materials which can take hundreds of years to break down in a landfill. By choosing a wool rug for their home, residents can feel good about making an environmentally responsible choice that has minimal impact on the planet.
Another reason why natural wool rugs are perfect for New York homes is their versatility in terms of design and style. Wool rugs are available in a wide range of colors, patterns, and sizes, making it easy to find the perfect rug to complement any decor scheme. Whether homeowners prefer a traditional, classic look or a more modern and contemporary design, there is a wool rug to suit every taste and style.
Overall, natural wool rugs NY are an excellent choice for homeowners due to their insulating properties, durability, sustainability, and versatility in design. By investing in a wool rug for their home, residents can create a warm and inviting space that is both practical and stylish. With the added benefits of being environmentally friendly and long-lasting, natural wool rugs are the perfect choice for any New York home.

8 Tips For Flawless Wedding Shoe Shopping
How’s your wedding shoe shopping going? At the rate I’m going, I’ll probably buy one pair per month until November. Should I buy my dream velvet fuchsia pumps (that will probably get destroyed in the sand), Mexican embroidered wedges, or basic nude heels I’m going to kick off anyway? I just can’t choose!
So today, we’re sharing Bella Belle Shoes‘ top tips for choosing the perfect wedding shoe (that I think we can all benefit from). Including what I think is the most important takeaway: you’re not limited to one shoe! PHEW!
As designers of wedding shoes, we get asked all the time about how to choose a wedding shoe from our #bellabellebrides. We love to help and always are ready to provide you with tips as you start this exciting journey of planning your dream wedding!
Choosing a perfect wedding shoe isn’t an easy task, it is, after all, the make or break for all-day comfort – we’re sure you don’t want to deal with sore feet. In our latest Euphoria 2018 wedding shoe collection, we have elegant and intricate beading styles in comfortable wedding heels, floral beaded wedding flats and crystal embellished wedding sandals to fit with any personality type.
Keep scrolling to view photos from our super Vogue editorial inspired lookbook (photographed by Laura Gordon) while you read our expert wedding shoe hunting tips!
1. Always Buy Early
Our first golden rule is don’t wait until the last minute to find your wedding shoe! Create a Pinterest board of wedding shoe styles that you love so that you have that at the back of your mind as you try on wedding dresses.
If you’re planning on shopping online, it’s always a good idea to buy early as sizes can run out really fast. If the sizes run out, the lead time can be long, especially if it’s handmade. So it’s always a good idea to get the shoe early rather than later.
If you get it before your wedding dress fitting, you’ll be able to wear it to ensure that it matches your dress and the hem is right. This will help you save alteration costs later down the road.
2. Venue Considerations
Are you having an outdoor wedding? Garden? Ballroom? Church? Barn? Think about where you’re having your wedding when you’re choosing your wedding shoe.
Garden wedding brides might want to consider wearing a comfortable wedding flat which works better for the garden terrain. If you love a good heel, a low heel would suit the uneven surface. Or expand your mind and wear a wedding bootie, a mix between a heel and a flat that provides extra support.
Wherever you decide to have your wedding, always ensure that your shoe choice works well with the location.
3. Comfort Is Key
Think about your everyday style. Are you someone who loves the confidence of a 4 inch stiletto? Then keep to your style and wear a stiletto for your wedding. Just ensure that the heel you choose has extra padding so that you’re comfortable all day.
If you are woman that loves sneakers or sandals, then stick to a lower shoe height for your wedding. We don’t recommend testing a new height on your wedding day as all eyes will be on you. If heels are important, consider a low heel option so you still get the experience of a heel without the ambitious height.
Also, choose shoes that have natural materials such as genuine leather to allow for stretching and breathability. Just remember to stay true to who you are.
4. Choose One That Complements Your Style
You’ve probably put in a ton of effort to find the perfect dress, which means that you might want to find a wedding shoe that complements your dress and style.
Look at the elements of your wedding dress. Is your dress adorned with classic lace or elegant rhinestone embroidery? Does it have little blue detail embroidery? Look for similar elements in your wedding shoe to complement your dress, so that it matches your style and taste. You wouldn’t want a total mix match.
5. Ensure That It Makes You Feel Special
Choose a wedding shoe that makes you feel amazing! Even though your dress is floor length, you still want to be able to give your guests an occasional peak that’ll make them gasp and shower you with compliments!
You want to feel like a Princess on your special day, so consider one that isn’t boring. Perhaps a sparkly blue Cinderella glass slipper or a gold and champagne number. Bottom line: Choose a wedding shoe that will stand out and one that will look amazing both in pictures and in real life.
6. Get Them Worn In
Try, try and try them again! Wear them around the house (preferably on a clean, indoor and carpeted surface in case you need to return if needed) to test the comfort of the shoe.
Try wearing them for an hour or two as you prep for meals to get them worn in, so that they fit comfortably on your wedding day. If you really want to go all out, try dancing in them to really wear them in.
It’s also fun to wear them before your wedding in the house so you can truly imagine how you’ll look on your big day!
7. Re-Wearability vs One-Time Special Sentimental Wear
Are you looking for a wedding shoe that is sentimental or one that can be re-worn?
If you’re looking for something sentimental, then look for one that is special enough to be passed down as an heirloom.
If you’re looking for practicality, then focus your search on shoes that you can re-wear after your wedding day. Instead of an ivory number, look for a nude heel, or go bold with a black beauty. Also, consider wedding sandals or even flats. Not only are they comfortable but the style is usually one where you can re-wear many, many times! This way, you’ll be able to relive your wedding day every time you put them on. Also, who doesn’t love a bargain?
8. You’re Not Limited To One Wedding Shoe
Finally, remember that it’s totally normal to have a pair for the ceremony and another for the reception. If brides are allowed to change wedding dresses, then the same thing applies to wedding shoes!
If you want to wear a heel during the ceremony, then consider a wedding flat for the dancing which is more comfortable. Also, your wedding day is all about you! So you have every valid excuse and reason to splurge on new shoes.
So there you have it! Enjoy the fun of the wedding shoe hunting process.
Keep in mind the tips above and we promise that you’ll have a pain-free wedding.

Carpet Cleaning Mistakes You Are Probably Making
A carpet adds beauty and elegance to any room especially the living room. However, the carpet demands a lot of regular work and care for the homeowner to enjoy the comfort and beauty it gives the home. There are several things that you can do to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of your carpet. Often, people view maintenance of a carpet to be such a daunting task hence they neglect this important chore. Knowing how to deal with the spills and other stains that find their way to your carpet will make the difference between your carpet looking like a playground complete with months of dirt or your carpet looking like one that could be featured in popular home improvement blogs or magazines.
Most homeowners get it wrong when it comes to carpet cleaning and then they wonder why their carpet doesn’t look attractive like the ones in home magazines. Below are some carpet cleaning mistakes that many homeowners.
Putting Off Cleaning
Most people often become victims of procrastination, when it comes to cleaning their carpet. When a spill finds its way to your carpet it needs to be dealt with promptly, but most people choose to deal with it another time and they end up leaving the stain on the carpet for months. You should never allow that stain to spend another minute or another hour on the carpet. It will be harder getting rid of the stain and the odour if the spill causes it. As a matter of fact, it’s very easy to clean up a spill immediately it happens.
Too Much Scrubbing
There is always this notion that scrubbing too much will eventually remove the stain. Many homeowners do this when cleaning their carpets which is a great mistake that that contributes to the wear and tear of the carpet. The scrubbing causes damage to the fibres of the carpet especially if you are using a brush that has hard bristles. Also, scrubbing too much spreads the spill deeper down the carpet. Instead of actually solving a problem, you will be creating more problems such as discoloration and odours for the carpet since the spill contents are now deeply embedded. Scrubbing tools are a total no-no when cleaning your carpet if you want to maintain that new and well-maintained look.
Using Wrong Cleaning Agents
The question of detergents should always take priority in your mind whenever you are shopping for cleaning detergents for your carpets. It’s advisable to always read the manufacturer’s advice on the detergent’s package before buying it. There are detergents that can cause great damage on your carpet. Some actually cause discoloration on the carpet resulting in more stains. If you are not sure about the possible outcome of a certain detergent, you can test it on a small rug and see the effect first. The last thing you would want is damaging your carpet while you just had all the intentions of making it clean and spotless.
Ignoring Professional Carpet Cleaners
A carpet requires great care if you really want it to add great beauty to your home. Most people never see the need to pay a visit to a professional carpet cleaner because they trust their cleaning tactics. Carpet owners are advised to at least have their carpets cleaned professionally once a year. There are benefits of professional carpet cleaning and one of them is that it will ensure your carpet looks great and that your home remains lovely and inviting as it should be courtesy of the carpet. The professionals know how to give your carpet the ultimate cleaning that will keep it clean for a long time.
Using A Dirty Vacuum Cleaner
Is the vacuum cleaner you are using actually cleaning your carpet or adding more dirt to your carpet? This question should be on your mind any time you are about to start a carpet cleaning process in your home. Basically, dirty cleaning tools will mean you won’t achieve the results you actually want. If you are hiring a cleaning tool you really ought to be careful and confirm that it is actually clean before you begin. There are tools that are carriers of debris and bacteria acquired from the last cleaning session. You are innocently hiring such a tool to clean your carpet but it actually ends up doing the exact opposite. Ensure the tools you are using are clean whether you have hired them or you own them; a regular maintenance of your carpet cleaning tools will make them more efficient.
Using Too Much Water
Another great crime made when cleaning a carpet is using too much water. When a spill occurs, the most immediate response is pouring water on the spot and then you start scrubbing. This is never a great thing to do because it often results in the spreading of the stain. Discoloration, odors, and dampness are often the results when too much water is used when cleaning the carpet. It’s never advisable to use too much water because just a little will do the job perfectly and you will save time when it comes to drying off the water.
Using A Colored Cloth
When you pour water or wine on your carpet you will be tempted to use a cloth to dry it up. While a cloth could absorb that spill, you will be left with a lot to deal with eventually. Using a colored piece of cloth to absorb a spill will do more damage than good. There is a great chance of the dye of the cloth getting absorbed by the carpet hence meaning you have more to deal with. Avoid absorbing spills with a colored piece of material especially if your carpet is white or has a color that stains easily.
Regardless, of how hard it may seem to clean a carpet, the benefits of having a carpet in your home are just too sweet not to enjoy them. A carpet makes your home flourish with beauty and glamour. Nothing comes easy and the privilege of having a carpet comes with great responsibility. With these detailed tips, you will be able to avoid the mistakes when cleaning your carpet. Top-notch maintenance of your carpet is not negotiable if you want your living space to look, clean warm and inviting at all times.

From Jason Wu to Jonathan Simkhai: 13 fashion insiders dish on their holiday wish lists
If you’ve been struggling to find the perfect holiday gift for your fashionable friend who is always ahead of the trends, tracks all the buzzy red carpet designers, and follows the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund each year to scout the next big designer to watch, why not ask the people who know best?
Yahoo Lifestyle asked 14 top fashion industry insiders to share one “high-priced” and one “low-priced” gift they are each coveting this year. Great gifts don’t have to cost a fortune, but that doesn’t mean everyone can’t still dream of one splurge-worthy vacation, furniture item, or piece of jewelry.
If the one you’re shopping for this year is classy and elegant, just like Jason Wu’s gorgeous gown designs, his gift picks might be worth a look. But if your friend is anything like the socially conscious Aurora James, behind Brother Vellies, the shoe brand that is improving the lives of Africans by creating jobs in South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Morocco, then James’s wish list might be something to consider too.
If your lucky gift recipient is similar to the ultracool duo behind Monse and Oscar de la Renta, Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia — known for their high-fashion editorial off-the-shoulder dresses for Monse and show-stopping gowns for de la Renta — then their wish list is one to bookmark.
Ahead, see what these designers, as well as 10 other fashion insiders, including Christian Siriano, Harley Viera-Newton, Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs, Jonathan Simkhai, and others are all coveting this holiday season.
Afterward, head to Polyvore for a chance to win one of 10 $250 Visa gift cards from their #PolyPresents: Wish List contest (open now until Dec. 31).

It’s a hot word in today’s online world of DIY blogging and made over décor: Repurpose. But what does it really mean to “repurpose” something? Google has informed me that to repurpose means to “adapt for use in a different purpose.” This is one of my favorite words, and working at ReHouse I have daily inspiration. It got me to wondering, what are the most popular architectural salvage items to repurpose? I’ve done my fair share of upcycling, as it is also called, but I turned to the DIY pros via Pinterest for some guidance on the topic.
I conducted a search on Pinterest for “repurpose architectural salvage” and gathered my data on the frequency with which each item or category appeared in the results. I then compared those results with our own POS database and the quantity of each item or category we sold in 2016 and 2017 so far (these numbers will be listed in parenthesis for each category or subcategory). I have concluded that the top 10 architectural salvage items to repurpose (in no particular order) must be
Doors (1081)
Interior (709), exterior(209), paneled wood, metal, wood with leaded glass, rustic/barn (53), sliding, folding, painted or natural, hundreds of DIYers are adapting doors to fit their décor needs and styles. These photos all come from ReHouse customers who have reinstalled or repurposed the doors they purchased here.
Top left: Tim repurposed a pair of oversized doors from a garage or barn into outdoor privacy walls on his deck. Top right: Exterior door with side lites and arched transom from Victorian home in Hornell, NY reinstalled at MCM Natural Stone in Rochester, NY. Center right: wood interior door with beautiful grain turned on its side is now a customer’s headboard. Bottom right: an assortment of paneled interior wood doors pieced together to make the sales counter at Grossman’s Nursery also in Rochester, NY. Bottom left: side folding wood and glass garage doors became a space divider in a clothing store in NYC.
Windows (955)
Technically these are window sashes or one part of the whole window unit. Most DIYers using windows seem to choose older wood framed sashes with divided lites (256), leaded glass (100) or the occasional stained glass (31). Pinterest has window project round ups that include “25+ DIY Repurposed Window Ideas” and “40 Simple Yet Sensational Repurposing Projects for Old Windows.” Wall decor seems to be a very popular result, and here are a few I would be happy to hang in my home.
Left to right. 1. Frame a fun favorite poster within the divided lites and add a whimsical accent to the front like Cassie from Little Red Window. 2. Feature a collection of small stained glass windows on an empty wall like this arrangement from Pinterest said to be in the home of John McGivern. 3. At Right Up My Alley Design on Etsy I found inspiration for painting on glass just as I would on a canvas. 4. I could not find any one to which I can attribute this creative enclosed frame except that it is obviously from the family of Sgt. Gregory W Ball. Cases and cabinets seem to be a natural progression in window repurposing.
Left: By Your Hands featured this cabinet with windows as doors but did not know where it originally came from. You could use a pre-built cabinet or build one to suit a found window. Similar to one at my house, this cold frame from Grow Garden Tomatoes will protect your sprouting plants in the cool spring.
Metal Accents
Metalwork that was a part of something else in a former life often peeks through or sometimes even dominates architectural vignettes. In ReHouse these items fit into all categories. Among the top choices for salvaged metalwork are fence sections or pieces (73), gates with some sort of latch (7), heating grates (180), tin ceiling (361), lamp/lighting parts (320), and other metal do-dads, tools, and thingies from who knows what (I don’t have a number for that).
Top row, left to right: Narrow console table using reclaimed wood and wrought iron fence pieces, this post led me back to Cass at Remodelaholic. An aged run-of-the-mill chain link fence gate becomes a decorating focal point when hung above the fireplace and adorned with a natural arrangement at Back Porch Musings. Those little dod-dads come in handy when making unique wind chimes as Rebecca discovered from life. by hand. Tear that ugly fabric off an old lamp shade, invert, and let it hold up your tulips (no attribution). Bottom row, left to right: Antique heating grates set into the ground and filled with colored stones become and enchanted walking path aparently from Hometalk. Make your own toilet paper holder out of pipe pieces or purchase at Reclaimed Art. This lovely bouquet accent lamp is made of lamp parts with a touch of hardware for the blossoms by Jack at Jack Riley Lighting.
Hardware (9725)
That leads us into another broad category that spans all types of door knobs (816), door plates (688), drawer pulls and knobs (2451), latches (205), hinges (1348), hooks (217), escutcheons (162), and brackets (64). I was surprised to discover that many hardware repurposing projects are resulting in beautiful and unique jewelry. There are also many customers at ReHouse who want to give their kitchen or furniture a makeover with new knobs or pulls.
SONY DSC
Top row, right to left: ReHouse customer, Alissa Laine, restored this beautiful dresser by replacing the knobs with original glass. 1/2 of a hinge + 2 typewriter keys = a classy hook for necklaces made by Paul at Etsy shop StrangeTanks. An antique eschutcheon (that key hole thing) and a few beads create a simple and elegant statement from a web page that is no longer active. Some shabby chic door knobs are retrofitted for candles and rented out as wedding decor at Something Borrowed. Bottom left: One of my favorite uses for antique hardware has to be the addition of a door plate from ReHouse to a real and functioning guitar by Jonathan at Postal Commerce. A statement piece worthy of a red carpet event this necklace features an antique drawer pull and (I think) precious stones made at Retreaux Girl. Another ReHouse customer (whose name has been sadly misplaced) used 12 point glass door knobs and a wood door header to create an elegantly rustic coat rack.
Wood Trim and Accents
This is admittedly a large and varied category. People are using corbels (76), plinth blocks (76), door headers (over 150 linear feet), column capitals, and pieces of wood appliqué. It also includes all types of turned wood findings such as balusters (149), newel posts (8), columns (57), and furniture parts like chair spindles (145 chairs) and table legs.
Top left: An antique extra large corbel mounted on the wall becomes a plant stand at the Bachman’s Spring 2011 Ideas House and captured by Itsy Bits and Pieces. Top center: Using some salvaged wood trim our customer Ms. Farnung created a lovely space to display her jewelry. Top right: Decorative plinth blocks used to adorn the bottom corners of doorways where 2 types of trim meet. Add a hook of your choosing and mount them to hang hats, necklaces, or dish towels like My Desert Cottage. Bottom row: Matching corbels are used to support a shelf in the dining room at the Red Chandelier. An unidentified but beautiful piece of salvaged wood repurposed as a table lamp by Meyer Interiors.
Mantels (33)
Pinterest viewers are not inundated with mantels as they may be doors or windows, but the end results are so beautiful and inspiring I feel they have earned a spot in the top ten. These mantels are might be striped, sanded, painted, and/or stained. Many live their new lives simply as restored mantels for real or imagined fireplaces, but often they are transformed into headboards, book shelves, or even a mirror frame.
Top left: upholstered mantel headboard by Rhonda at My Blue Creek Home. Top right: shabby chic arched mantel headboard from a compilation at Country Design Home. Middle right: mantel turned bookshelf found on Pinterest from an old Ebay link. Bottom right: small mantel repurposed as a bathroom mirror frame at Neighbor’s Hill Bakery and Cafe in Arkansas (photo by Aunt Ruthie at Sugar Pie Farmhouse). Bottom left: imagined fireplace vignette at Chateau Chic.
Shutters (224)
Both interior and exterior, shutters are used in a variety of household vignettes and projects. Interior shutters are usually shorter and narrower. These were more for privacy that for protection as large outdoor shutters were. In case you’re interested, the most popular exterior shutter color is green if our inventory is any indication.
Top row, left to right: Gail Wilson at My Repurposed Life made this handy magazine rack with one wide interior shutter. A tool caddy using 2 small interior shutters made by customer Gail Miller at a ReHouse workshop last year. Four small interior shutters painted white and attached to form a box hangs from a chain and lights up the space (unknown source). Bottom left: A lovely autumn vignette featuring a pair of shutters in another customer’s home. Bottom right: I’ve seen many display shelves made with a shutter as the back but this one includes a light at the top and doubles as a hall tree with coat hooks (unknown source).
Furniture (1633)
At ReHouse our furniture sales are topped by cabinets of all types (1027). Far below that come chairs (145) and tables (131) and then just drawers all by themselves. Many DIYers are following the painted furniture trend which is sometimes covered by the repurposed umbrella. Here I would like to show some amazing examples of furniture repurposed as some totally unexpected things.
Top right: wooden head and foot boards become a sunny bench for one customer. Center left: a refrigerator on its back and covered in barn wood will now hold all the cold drinks for the party at another customer’s house. Top right: dresser – drawers + wallpaper = dollhouse (unknown source). Bottom left: another foot board with some shabby chic paint and a dozen small hooks can hold all your tea cups and saucers on the wall (link went to Hometalk). Bottom right: From Gypsy Barn this upright piano has been gutted and fitted with shelves ans a drawer to be used as a dining room feature.
Commercial
Ok, I hear you…”what kind of category is commercial?” This may not be on the top ten for Pinterest posts. It may not even be defined as architectural salvage at all, but this year ReHouse has sold over 700 square feet of bowling alley. That’s right, bowling alley. I’m taking a guess that the customers who purchased these 700 square feet are not installing a home bowling alley. The other option? They must be repurposing it.
Now 700 square feet is very heavy. It requires commitment to salvage, commitment to purchase, and commitment to repurpose. With all that commitment I shall add my own. I commit to giving Bowling Alley its very own post within the next few weeks featuring only projects completed by ReHouse Customers. If you haven’t sent photos of your bowling alley project yet, now would be a good time.
Until then, what will you repurpose today?
Top 10 Architectural Salvage Items to Repurpose for Your Home It’s a hot word in today’s online world of DIY blogging and made over décor: Repurpose. But what does it really mean to “repurpose” something?

Review: Elini Watches for Men
I’m elated to pronounce the opening of my Great Watches NYC brand in Soho, Manhattan. I have been preparing to make this launch for quite some time now and it has finally happened. Huzzah!
As a director and film producer, I appreciate the value of fine fashion, and how the right watch can accentuate the right wardrobe.
Indeed, I encourage all my actors and actresses to look great in their film cameos and of course, on the red carpet. The right tie… the righ scarf… and of course the right watch can make a world of a difference. This is why I came up with the idea of launching a boutique shop and online review site, Great Watches.
It’s a place where I hope the high styling, flashy profiling fashionista will get quality information and reviews on Breitling, Guess, Komono and MVMT watches. Feel free to stop by at our place of business at:

Ten Big Winners from the PPG Syracuse Nationals Top 100
It’s always great to return to the PPG Syracuse Nationals in Syracuse, New York since it has been a part of the Painless Performance Products Top 100 presented by Street Rodder program for many years. For us to gather our Painless Performance Top 100 we visit 10 shows during the show season to select 10 vehicles at each to form our Painless Performance Top 100 by the end of the year.
Once again this year we canvassed the massive New York State Fairgrounds to locate our winners. Our selections were quite diverse and the group includes a number of early roadsters and coupes, Tri-Five Chevys, pickup trucks and a classic custom. The combinations of design elements and styles fused with performance and hopped-up V-8s makes each and every one of them a standout. Follow along to check out firsthand what we picked out on our visit to Syracuse. SRM
Wayne Earle | 1951 Chevy | Gasburg, VA There’s something cool about a lowered Chevy custom that commands your attention. Kentz Kustomz set the stance and added just the right amount of allure including frenched headlights and a custom grille with power coming from a warmed-over 350ci Chevy mill. The PPG Sun Kiss coating and panel painted roof completes the look.
Randy Weaver | 1931 Ford | Sandy, UT Chopped, channeled and laced with attitude this Model A packed a healthy dose of venom thanks to the team at Weaver Customs. Sitting on a custom chassis complete with a Heidts IFS, it showcased a 401ci Ford V-8 with twin-turbos rolling on wheels from Detroit Steel. The subtle Axalta Sand Bronze vibe added a level of classic elegance.
Rick Bolea | 1933 Ford | Moon Township, PA Rick’s coupe is pure hot rod. Completed by Precision Hot Rods & Fabrication, the body features a perfectly-balanced chop accented by a custom hood top and sides along with immaculate PPG Red Mahogany gloss. Power comes from a dual-quad fed 427ci Ford FE V-8 with Real Rodders wheels wrapped with BFGoodrich tires and plants the power.
Preston Carden, Jr | 1956 Chevy | Newcastle, DE Gassers are the ultimate statement especially when they’re setup like Preston’s. A Speedway Motors suspension gave it the right-on stance with a Borla Induction stack-injected 421ci mill linked to a Tremec 5-speed adding go. Halibrand wheels and Firestone rubber are cool while a PPG shine and a classic bench interior finishes it.
Dave and Sue Ciappa | 1955 Chevy | Lockport, NY If you want to haul with style look no further. A subtle chop is accented by a lustrous coating of Axalta platinum and pearl white combined with RideTech ‘bags and Schott wheels on Michelin rubber. A Chevy 406ci V-8 brings power and Wilwood brakes add stopping power. Inside Vintage Air and Classic Instruments track the cooling and vitals.
Lisa Wilsey | 1933 Ford | Whitesboro, NY Roadsters in the summertime personify hot rodding. Tucci Hot Rods nailed it with this drop-top packing a hopped-up small-block linked to a 700-R4 trans to spin 17 and 20-inch Dodge Nitro rims topped with Coker tires. PPG Deep Sea metallic brings it to life accented by tan vinyl and custom interior panels by Dom Tucci Design.
Gary Corkell | 1932 Ford | Middletown, DE Built in10-weeks by One-Off Rod & Custom, this Deuce started with a body and chassis combination from Adams Hot Rod Shop. It was treated to a searing 357ci V-8 topped with a sextet Speedway Motors 9 Super 7 carbs linked to a TH350 trans. Coated in custom PPG Blue Sugar it rolls on Wheel Vintiques wheels and Coker/Firestone rubber.
Gef Freese | 1954 Ford | Pittsfield, NH To set a wicked stance Traditional Speed and Custom incorporated an Art Morrison chassis with IFS and a Winters quick-change out back. Power comes from a Roush 427ci IR crate engine topped with stack injection linked to a Tremec T56 trans. Coated in Nason red it rolls on Vintage wheels and features a Petter Davidsen full leather interior.
Derrick and Katie Pesko | 1927 Ford | Waterford, CT Injecting a neat ‘60s vibe this T sets the pace with a refreshing PPG white body accented with ice blue lines. Built by Allstar Hot Rods it features their signature chassis with a Speedway Motors 5-inch dropped front axle and GM 10-bolt rear. A 350ci V-8 adds power and inside shortened ’52 Olds dash, bomber seats and fur carpet look awesome.

A DIY Fairy House Kit
Rose & Rex is a NY based toyshop that I’ve written about before — I’m a big fan of their sustainable and elegant toys and their dedication to imaginative play. When we were camping at the seaside a few weeks ago we brought this adorable Fairy House Kit that they had sent us a little while ago. It ended up being such a lovely summer craft activity! Perfect for when the days are warm and lazy and you spend all of your time outdoors.
The Fairy House Kit is a pretty, keepsake wooden box made in beautiful Maine. It has a selection of natural materials inside, like (sustainably harvested) moss, some pretty feathers, acorn caps and wood rounds, sea shells and colourful sea glass. There’s also (very importantly!) a tiny corked glass bottle with magical fairy dust inside.
A set of cards explains the different sorts of fairies and what sort of housing they all prefer. For example, the fairy Queen Mave likes her house to be grand. A real pinecone palace, with turrets and moats and winding pathways. The Sea Shell Fairies love their houses draped with seaweed and decorated with sea-glass. And with furniture made out of shells. This is a very smart and sweet way to entice children to kickstart their imagination and to start building their own fairy houses!
Ava made a cosy fairy house with a little wooden table and bench, a soft carpet made of moss and a pretty acorn-cap bowl filled with tiny shells. All decorated with pinecones and leaves. It was all so cosy and welcoming that a big fat caterpillar soon moved in!
The next day she added a bedroom with a four-poster bed and a floor made of wood-chips. So cute! I love how this Fairy House Kit gives the initial idea by handing a starting set of materials. It really encourages kids to look for natural building materials themselves so they can keep building and adding on to their little fairy houses.
xxx Esther
P.S. Rose & Rex is a wonderful NY-based shop who will be joining us at our upcoming NY ShopUp this September, so please mark your diaries and come check out their selection then.
