6 Style Tribes That Will Change The Way You Dress Next Year

Blame Instagram, blame the dizzying fashion cycle, but it seems our subcultures never seem to hang around that long any more. So as we bid bye-bye to the post-Soviets, in-and-out in less time than it took to dismantle the Berlin Wall, we welcome six new looks to bite right now.

Elbowing their way into the zeitgeist, these style tribes aren’t just overpowering your Instagram feed, they’re turning the heads of designers. Their looks are filtering into luxury and high street collections alike. They’re all over pop culture, and soon they’re likely to find their way into your wardrobe in one way or another.

Ametora

What is it? As detailed in W David Marx’s excellent book of the same name, ‘Ametora’ is the Japanese contraction of ‘American Traditional’. Initially, it meant the Ivy League style that Japanese teenagers co-opted in the 1960s, but now includes all the classic Americana that was first copied in Japan, then improved, then perfected. With Hawaiian shirts trending last summer, this is an evolution of that mid-century aesthetic, being referenced in spring next year by high street labels.

How To Wear It

Ametora is the way that Japanese designers recreate American style in their own way, from cowboys to bikers and even hip-hop. But the most obvious way into the look is artisanal reworkings of things like denim, workwear, unstructured blazers and knits. “Stick to a classic colour palette of neutral tan, deep brown and navy, with the introduction of colour through printed shirts, ties and scarves,” says stylist Toby Standing, from personalised menswear shop Thread.”Mix up your textures and definitely invest in some wide, selvedge jeans.”

Key Brands

Japan’s select stores were the first to bring the American look over, and Beams is still a stronghold for Ametora. As far as denim goes, perhaps no brand cares more – or costs more – than Visvim, which somehow makes Western-inspired jeans that feel more authentic than the real thing. If you’re more into the Ivy League look, then Osaka’s Ring Jacket has been there since the beginning.

Grown-up Skater

The guys that championed skatewear in the mid-’90s are now approaching 40. At least. Time to grow up, then, without trading in your identity. Perhaps as a reaction to all those hype-fuelled streetwear brands, the new generation (which is actually the previous generation) is creating prep-influenced clothes that you could wear for a quick mini-ramp session on the way to dinner at your in-laws.

How To Wear It

Not head-to-toe logos. “Fit is the key component here,” says Standing. In this more mature world, there’s no reason the timeless skater uniform of baggy Dickies and a hoodie can’t be finished with a soft-shouldered blazer, or a chunky knit.

Key Brands

Doing skate right isn’t about being first outside Palace any more. For one, all those logos are starting to feel a bit inauthentic. Instead, look to older heads, like Brendon Babenzien, who left his gig as creative director of Supreme to found Noah, which features loose tailoring alongside its logo hoodies and Aprix, which does smart-ish skate shoes. Fellow New York brand Aimé Leon Dore also does a neat spin on grown-up streetwear – think rugby shirts and cable-knit cardigans – while Awake NY has you covered for legal-drinking-age takes on graphic prints.

War Core

Depending on your level of cynicism, this man-the-barricades-inspired trend is either designers reflecting a collapsing society back at us, or the worst kind of exploitation. Think tactical vests, belts with buckles borrowed from helicopter gunships, and in one instance, an actual riot shield. Well, it’ll help on drop day.

How To Wear It

Going all-in on your war core look can quickly start to feel a touch prepper. So apply the military touches lightly. “It’s all about technical and tactical items finding their way into everyday outfits,” says Standing. Cross-body bags and mesh vests are the more obvious ways in, but anything ripstop or covered in pockets, poppers and heavy buckles taps the trend, too. “It’s function and form, which also means it’s not adventurous in colour.” Think dark greys and khakis, with the odd bit of black and beige.

Key Brands

As a look inspired by the streets, it’s appropriate that streetwear brands would lead the charge. The key one is Alyx, whose rollercoaster belts have become something of a sensation – Kim Jones even tapped its founder Matthew Williams to craft a special version for his debut show at Dior. Williams is a former Kanye acolyte, around whom you’ll find this trend concentrated (he’s been doing the combat kit thing with Yeezus for a few years now, after all). At Heron Preston, that means flak jackets, whereas for Off-White and now Louis Vuitton boss Virgil Abloh, it gets more literal with berets and paratrooper trousers.

British Heritage

This look has been around for a while. As in, a century and some, based as it is on Industrial-era workwear, chunky knits and boots you can drop bits of tractor on without coming a cropper. Not so long ago, British heritage fashion was about tweed jackets, brogues and countryside aesthetics. Now, perhaps taking a cue from the popularity of American workwear, this very rugged approach to utility fashion.

How To Wear It

The heritage look’s been big for close to a decade now in one form or another, originally as a reaction to how soft modern life had got. Freed from suits, creative types began dressing like old factory workers in an effort to grasp hold of something that felt authentic. Which translated as time-tested materials designed to protect you from elements and machinery, but which as a bonus all look quite sharp in a Shoreditch content agency. “A dark waxed outer layer, like a Barbour field jacket, with some dark denim, leather work boots and textured knitwear can be your go-to for a great British look,” says Standing.

Key Brands

Ideally, you want to pick up pieces from labels who’ve got some history under the belt. Barbour’s been making its waxed jackets in South Shields for a century, fellow motorcycle specialist Belstaff still makes some of the best leathers anywhere, while for footwear you can take your pick of any Northampton brand. We’d go Grenson for something with a modern twist, or Loake if you like to keep things classic.

Modern Rocker

Guitar music might be struggling in the charts, but its look is about as easy to kill as Keith Richards. Look to Michigan rockers Greta Van Fleet, with their musty-looking mix of leather and denim, or Atlantans the Black Lips, for something a touch muckier. Or keep an eye on Hedi Slimane (the guy who made skinny jeans a thing), back making rock n roll menswear at Celine after leaving Saint Laurent in 2016.

How To Wear It

Skin, attitude, a flagrant disregard for what parents think looks good. In other words, everything that’s always made rock ‘n’ roll unique. “It’s a kind of modern evolution of what Steven Tyler was wearing in Aerosmith,” says Standing. “Loose, printed shirts, unbuttoned perhaps too far, with skin-tight black jeans and a pair of worn-in Chelsea boots. Swap the shirt for a faded band tee if you’re not feeling particularly pirate-y.”

Key Brands

It can be expensive to look this trashy – Saint Laurent still has that Slimane DNA, and his first collection at Celine will drop soon. Then you have brands that never quit the rockstar aesthetic like The Kooples or AllSaints on the high street. But really, vintage is best. You want everything you wear to look like it’s been on the road a few times, so try to find leather jackets and skinny jeans that actually have.

K-Pop

The mashed-up, anything goes aesthetic favoured by Korea’s zeitgeist-y pop stars, who espouse a similarly genre-agnostic approach to music, is less a look and more a mindset. More is more, trends are fleeting but to be embraced wholesale, individuality is all, although ideally in a way that shows you get groupthink. In the mix here there’s preppy fashion, unstructured tailoring, big-brand streetwear and some ’80s denim for good measure.

How To Wear It

Do you avoid the limelight? Does having your photo taken make you uncomfortable? Do you think three belts is too many belts? Then K-pop fashion may not be for you. “It’s a real mix of high-end brands and trends,” says Standing. “You want to be adorned in the latest silhouettes, with the latest sneakers and extraordinary hair.”

Key Brands

K-pop is as much about Balenciaga as it is Palace, but if you’re hitting a nice high-low contrast in one look, you should be good. For authenticity, look to mix in some actual Korean brands: Ader Error has been labelled as Seoul’s Vetements, for its collective approach to design and ugly-is-beautiful spin on streetwear; 87mm specialises in slouchy, off-duty staples like puffers and fleeces; and Thisisneverthat is basically a homegrown spin on Supreme, ideal for where’d-you-get-that? accessories.

New York has been going through a metamorphosis process in terms of interior design, with hundreds of spaces and stores for high-end bands opening every year. In this article, we hope to shed the light on the best showrooms you can’t miss while paying a little visit to New York City.

This list of high-end furniture designs includes the most sought out ones in New York. Interior designer Sara Levitas and multi talented husband Noam (community Rabbi, high school teacher, jazz singer and writer) were looking for a rental in Caulfield, with a particular eye on heritage-style homes. Sara explains ‘finding the perfect place for us was a bit of a challenge, especially because we were looking for a single dwelling rental, in a very specific area. Luckily we found this just in time!’

As an interior designer, Sara explains that she understands people’s hesitancy in investing time and energy personalising a rental, but she believes ‘our home environment is so much part of who we are, and it’s important to invest emotionally into a space, to make it truly your own.’

The couple were attracted to the Californian bungalow style home, particularly the ceiling roses, ornate windows and dark timber floorings. Against this heritage backdrop, Sara has introduced an eclectic collection of art, MANY plants, and a mix of op shop, inherited and contemporary furniture. She explains ‘I love shopping locally’ and cites Open Room, Jardan, Designstuff and Ivy Muse as go to places. Although Sara also acknowledges that ‘no home would be complete without a couple of standard IKEA pieces to round everything off!’

The colourful and cosy house is described by Sara as a ‘whimsical cross between farmhouse, mid-century and Scandinavian…maybe!’ Favourite items include the plants she buys and Noam waters, the artwork in the living area her aeronautical engineer and Hasidic folk painter father created, and the special Moda Piera floor lamp. With three energetic kids, having these beautiful objects might sound a little precarious, but Sara emphasises that ‘the trick is teaching our children to take care of what we have. This does involve strict rules about no ball playing in the living area!’

Sara and Noam’s vibrant and verdant home is located close to the kids school, and their own synagogue, and this connection to community is integral to their family. Sara explains ‘In the Jewish faith, the family home is very much the centre of everything we do. It goes beyond, however, the large lavish meals shared with friends and community on the weekly Shabbat and many festivals, or the life lessons shared on the couch over a cup of tea with our children, gleaned from the ancient books that line our walls. It is truly about creating a serene sanctuary in the midst of an often turbulent world.’ She concludes, ‘Our hope is that the aesthetic choices we make in the home are not merely superficial niceties designed to impress or flaunt, but rather, conscious decisions that contribute to the creation of a peaceful, inspired and inspiring environment, that enriches not just our lives, but the lives of whoever steps inside.’

The original purpose of the museum was to protect and showcase the finds from the excavations in and around Athens conducted in 19th century, but the museum grew to become the country's main archaeological museum with more than 11,000 exhibits.

The exhibits provide a wide panorama of Greek civilization from Prehistory to Late Antiquity. The museum is housed in a huge 19th century neoclassical building designed by L. Lange. The exhibition space with its numerous galleries covers 8,000 square meters, and it houses five main permanent collections: The Collection of Prehistoric Antiquities, the Sculptures Collection, the Vase and Minor Objects Collection, the Stathatos Collection, and the Egyptian and Near Eastern Antiquities Collection. Why Department Stores Must Embrace Omnichannel Retail Experience

A New Frontier

The omnichannel retail experience trend isn’t limited to the clothing retail sector, rather, it has become normalized business practice across all retail classifications and product assortment offerings. This marketplace phenomenon represents a fundamental shift in the standard dynamics of the marketing and merchandising terrain. The line discerning the relationship between these two worlds has, and will continue to become extraordinarily blurred to a greater extent while the marketplace foregoes the evolutionary convergence between our mobile and brick and mortar shopping experiences. Furthermore, with transnational competition heavy and a new generation of consumers, department stores need to embrace the omnichannel retail experience in they hope to simply keep the doors open.

My first experience with a truly seamless integration of the individualized digital experience and in store capacity to deliver service was with Starbucks. One morning, my father asked if I would help him bring our furniture back into the house from the storage unit in our driveway because we had just had our hardwood floors refinished. Realizing I was out of Nespresso pods, I went to the source for my fix as would any addict seeking that first euphoric kiss of caffeination to begin the day. Being 9:15 AM on a Sunday, meant twiddling my thumbs in line for 15 minutes and waiting another 10 for my favorite psychoactive compound. After getting some espresso and pulling into my driveway, luckily not wearing ZARA because it would have gone out of fashion by then, my father exclaimed; “Where the hell were you?” I reassuringly told him “they took 30 minutes but i’m here now!” He looked at me with the Pieta of Michelangelo chiseling the cheeks of Mary, “You don’t have the app?”

The Problem

Department stores first got thrown a curve ball when fast fashion brands began to push them out of the market just north of ten years ago. Leading the executives of companies like Macy’s and Nordstrom’s to mimic hyenas wearing Ted Baker as they drew blood for the taste of respectable market share. The issue of competing with fast fashion was only further exacerbated with the rise of eccomerce coming to fruition roughly around the same time. We saw the early effects of fast fashion and eccomerce’s dominance as heritage brands like Levis for instance, went from 7.1B in sales for 1996 (More than Nike) to having the rug swept out from under them as they reported a mere 4.2B in sales in 2003. Whereas additionally, the department store retail sector as a whole has lost 29.6B in revenue since 2005, says Morgan Stanley.

The Solution

The opinions on objective solutions to remain competitive and drive profits vary, because the very notion is subjectively contextual to the company, consumer, and culture . Various retailers have set forth a myriad of different omnichannel retail experience in hopes of differentiating to stay relevant within their target market. Barney’s; “invested in smartphone app development and in store technology for it’s NY store in Chelsea,” where consumers are “greeted with specific info on what’s new” as they walk into the store. The applications goal was to show them products that might tickle their fancy based on the behaviors they’ve previously displayed shopping both online and in store; says WGSN in The Evolving Department Store: 5 Key US Strategies. But traditional digital marketing is becoming less dominant due to multitude of shifting variables.

In short, marketing new fashion products is no simple task due to product life cycles that forego the market’s inhale of consumer demand through a fickle trends conception and mass adoption, followed by the collective exhale of obsolescence forewent in a single, all but meditative breath. Combine the outlandish speed of today’s faddist product lifespan, with the behavioral shifts in today’s consumer psychology. If I may; The rapidly migrating identities of chameleon-like color shifts in the hues of consumptive personas seeking to pace in stride with the status quo styles deemed fashionable. Makes the notion of outlining quantifiable metrics for marketing fashion products to various consumer segments into a war that would make John Nash wave the white flag.

When a department store begins thinking about how to develop and implement a new omnichannel experience. Firstly, its imperative the company make the consumer journey part of the product, and even more so part of the brand. Like Starbucks so succinctly did. At its core, omnichannel retail in department stores should first enable consumers to have a speedy checkout with the products they already know they need. Ensuring what was once a symbiotic relationship between our digital and real experiences, manifests into a singular process with the virtues of positive emotional associations and the practicality of intuitive and effortless efficacy. Whereas succeeding the launch of a newfound platform, they can then focus the development of their platforms sophistication and ability to cater to shifting product trends while beginning to market goods and services to consumers that they were initially unfamiliar with.

Essentially, embracing a new shopping ambience fulfilling need based purchases firstly, stabilizing revenue and maintaining relevance by grounding the overarching marketing mix strategy. Whereas then shifting over to focus on the creation and conversion of wants to differentiate from the competition, provides a recipe to ultimately come out on top. Once they find the perfect stone to match the personality of their brand, it just has to be properly chiseled to appeal to consumers. The consumer journey is all about how much time consumers use doing whichever measured task. Figure out how your consumer uses their time, and you’ll know how they think. Know how they think, and you’ll know what they want, just like Amazon. In the meantime, have fun deciphering those 10M daily clicks to map what your consumer doesn’t know they want yet.

In a Pro-’Brexit’ Corner of Britain, Impatience to Be Done With It

ROMFORD, England--At the greyhound track in Romford the mood is tense. “Think big,” one racecourse employee breathes into my ear, referring not to life in general but to dog No. 6, a muzzled male he reckons has a chance to win.

I watch as fellow bettors nibble on soggy fish and chips and study their betting cards, and as bookmakers write and rewrite the odds on their whiteboards. It is raining.

The scene could not be more English, and that is fitting: Romford is where wealthy London becomes not-so-wealthy Essex, a county that prides itself on its ancient Englishness--not the upper-class variety with clipped private school accents but that of “patriotic, hard-working people who might describe themselves as working class,” says Andrew Rosindell, the local member of Parliament, a Conservative.

Seven months after a referendum vote to leave the European Union, many in Romford also describe themselves as impatient.

There is impatience with Supreme Court judges, who last week affirmed a lower-court ruling that the government must seek the approval of Parliament before starting talks for the so-called Brexit. (“Enemies of the people,” one woman commented matter of factly, echoing a recent tabloid headline.)

And there is impatience with Prime Minister Theresa May, who outlined her vision of a clean break with the European Union this month and promised to begin exit negotiations in March, but is distrusted here because she once backed the campaign to remain in the bloc.

With 10 minutes to go until the first race of the night, the conversation at the greyhound track turns to Brexit.

“What is taking them so long?” one man laments.

“There will be an uprising if nothing comes to fruition,” another predicts darkly.

“Wait, we haven’t left yet?” a third asks. “But we voted out!”

Romford and the Borough of Havering were so eager for Brexit that the local council voted for it five months before everyone else--in a motion last January proposed by Lawrence Webb, the local representative of the anti-European U.K. Independence Party. A well-judged stunt: politically unbinding, widely mocked in the metropolitan press but a sign of things to come.

Earlier, Mr. Webb had picked me up from the train station. We strolled through Romford Market, immortalized in “Market Boy,” a play by David Eldridge. It is usually a bustling affair of 150 stalls and at least as many St. George’s crosses, he said, but in freezing temperatures it is rather more subdued.

Flanked by a modern shopping mall on one side and a 19th-century church on the other, the market has been in operation since 1247, a banner at its entrance claims. Under the Royal Charter granted by King Henry III, no other market is permitted to set up within a radius of six and two-thirds miles (apparently the distance a sheep can walk in a day). So old is Romford that the River Rom was named after the town, rather than the other way around.

But for all that proud tradition, Romford isn’t what it used to be, Mr. Webb says. People work harder than five years ago, but earn less. They worry about rising rents and their children’s education. They are concerned that recent immigrants from the European Union are jumping the line in getting public services.

I tell him that in central London some people are hoping for regrets among those who voted for Brexit, for a realization that leaving Europe would make everyone poorer, that it had all been a terrible mistake.

“Some of the people you meet at dinner parties in London have their head so deep up their backsides they can’t see the light of day,” Mr. Webb says. “I just got off the phone with a family evicted from their temporary accommodation after they lost their council house. Landlords are throwing people out. That’s what is happening.”

The Supreme Court decision last week has only deepened the distrust of “London elites,” he says. And if that ruling has revived hopes of slowing down or softening Brexit in the British capital, a mere 45-minute train ride southwest of here, in Romford people talk about speeding things up.

“The plan is to delay, delay, delay so they never have to go through with Brexit,” Mr. Webb says. Article 50, the legal procedure that, once triggered, sets off a two-year irreversible countdown for the divorce from the European Union, “could have been triggered on Day 1 if they were serious about leaving.”

Could there be an uprising, as some locals have predicted?

“No, the fight will be at the ballot box,” Mr. Webb says. “You watch,” he adds. “If the Conservatives betray the people again, it’s UKIP’s gain. That’s what happened in America.”

If people here have not been tempted too much by UKIP so far, it is in part because Mr. Rosindell, the local member of Parliament, is as nationalist and anti-European as anyone.

His office is in the Margaret Thatcher House, named after Britain’s first female prime minister, who once championed the common European market but toward the end of her career became a Euroskeptic, banging her handbag for effect. Mr. Rosindell recounts proudly how he once took an aging Mrs. Thatcher greyhound racing. (She had her picture taken with a dog that--unbeknown to her, one must assume--was called Tom Euro.)

“Welcome to the heartland of the Thatcherite ideal,” Mr. Rosindell beams when I step inside. “We value tradition, family, nation, the flag, heritage and monarchy.”

That went without saying. There are 44 British flags, or Union Jacks, in the hallway; six portraits of Mrs. Thatcher; three portraits of Queen Elizabeth II; and a bust of Winston Churchill. Buster, Mr. Rosindell’s Staffordshire bull terrier, a popular English breed, wears a Union Jack waistcoat. Even the rug on the floor is the British flag.

“Is that not disrespectful?” I ask as I wipe my muddy boots on it.

No, Mr. Rosindell says, it’s good to have a “sense of humor about these things.”

“We have Union Jack bikinis and Union Jack underpants,” he says cheerfully. It is a sign of “modern” patriotism, he says.

The bunting in his office is red, white and blue. “Why the French national colors?” I joke.

“They’re not French!”

“Russian?”

To be fair, he chuckles. Born in 1966, the year England won the World Cup (“A good year to be born, a good year to be English,” he says), Mr. Rosindell believes strongly that Britain should leave the European Union and that “anything that is seen to derail the process will be seen as a betrayal by the elites.”

In the nearby market, some stallholders count Mr. Rosindell as part of that elite. “Air Miles Andy,” they call him. Many say they do not bother voting anymore and went to the polling station for the Brexit referendum only because, for once, they felt their vote could make a difference.

“Choosing between Labour and Conservative is like choosing one disease over another,” says Steve Wickenden, Sticky to his friends, who sells meat next to a painted English flag with the slogan “Come on England.”

A father of three, Mr. Wickenden is not really worried about the dire economic consequences from Brexit he hears about on television. “You can’t make an omelet without breaking some eggs,” he says. “We’ve broken the eggs. Now we need to make the omelet.”

Back at the greyhound track, the anticipation has been building for an hour. Finally the gates open, and a fake orange hare is sent whizzing along a rail on the outside boundary of the racing track at 33 miles an hour, six hounds in hot pursuit.

The noise level briefly rises. It is over in seconds. “A bit like sex,” one bookie comments.

The dog called Think Big came in second to last. No matter. People in Romford have had it with thinking big. Little England might be an insult elsewhere. Not here.

“Globalization, Europe, and where has that got us?” scoffs the bookie. “Nothing wrong with Little England.”
