How to Pick the Best Watch for Your Needs

It seems that now that everyone has a cell phone on them all the time, many people don't wear a watch anymore. After all, you can just look on your phone to see what time it is, which would most likely be more accurate anyway. This is a big reason why the art of watchmaking seems to be becoming more and more of a lost art everyday. We at Great Watches have always appreciated fine timepieces (check out our advice on wristwatches), I hate to see phones taking the place of wristwatches in our daily lives.

There are countless different types of watches to choose from. From five dollars to 20 thousand dollars, automatic and quartz, waterproof, shockproof, the list is endless. Here are my favorite watches and why I love them.

1.) G-shock- Casio's G-shock line of watches have been around for a long time, and for good reason. The whole point of these watches is that they are built to be practically bomb proof. In fact I'm wearing one right now, which I use to run, box, play football, and many other physical activities. This watch just won't break. If you are an active person, or just tend to break watches easily, this is definitely the watch for you. They come in women's and men's versions, and range in price from about 40 dollars to 150 dollars.

2.) Seiko divers- Seiko has always made quality watches, but what they are really known for are their dive watches. I have two of their automatic dive watches, which are considered by many to be among the toughest automatic watches one can buy. Automatic watches are generally more fragile than quartz watches, because they have many moving parts in them. The advantage, however, is the workmanship of the watch. In essence, automatic watches are machines, while quartz watches are computers. With both my Seiko divers having 200 meter water resistance, Japanese automatic movement, and solid stainless steel construction, its no wonder why these watches have a cult like following. The prices vary greatly depending on where you buy the watch, so try looking on line for a good deal. A good price would be between 180 and 200 dollars.

3.) Vostok- This Russian brand produces some of the most under priced mechanical watches today. A 200 meter dive watch can be had for as little 25 dollars! Like all the brands on my list, Vostok watches are known for their toughness and reliability. Understandably, Vostok watches have a less refined look and finish than the Seiko divers, but they are still water resistant to 200 meters. They can be found on line for around 25 to 40 dollars.

4.) Ollech  & Wajs- Rounding out my list of my favorite watches is Ollech  & Wajs. This brand uses Swiss movements which are very accurate and durable. They are one of the most affordable Swiss watches available, as well as being very beautiful, with every attention to detail being thought of in the making of these watches. They range in price from around 150 dollars for a quartz model, to 300 dollars or more for an automatic version.

All of these watches are extremely well built, and are worth serious consideration if you're in the market for a nice, reliable timepiece which will last for years to come.

Reminiscing about 2011 Shows

We like to have fun times at our Great Watches NYC location. One of the discussions we had over the water cooler was about top 2011 shows we used to watch. It’s amazing how time flies (even better when you’re sporting a nice watch...).

1.Kourtney and Kim take New York

The Kardashian sisters live quite a glamorous life compared to the everyday person. They attend red carpet events, star in photo shoots, and travel to high profile cities across the country.

Whilst doing this they are typically decked out in the latest fashions, so this makes for interesting fashion viewing. In addition, Kourtney and Kim Take New York is centered around Kourtney and Kim going to New York to open one of their Dash clothing stores.

2. Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl is a television series that has become synonymous with style. As the gossip girl stars grow up a little, so too are their fashion choices. You'll see amazing formal gowns, modern takes on suiting, the latest trends, and some vintage glamour.

3.Pretty Little Liars

Even before an episode of Pretty Little Liars begins the opening credits indicate that this show has an emphasis on presentation. Much like on Gossip Girl, each character has a unique style. For example, Emily is sporty, Hanna is the quintessential prom queen, and Spencer has the preppy thing going on. This gives you the opportunity to witness an array of different styles all within the one show.

4. The Real housewives

Between all the real housewives shows airing at the moment like; Orange County, Miami and Atlanta, you can see how real life women with a little cash to splash dress. The different shows provide a great variety of women to inspire you. This is beneficial, because you get to see what women with different body shapes, and coloring wear to flatter their attributes.

5. America's Next top Model season 16

America's Next top model provides lots of fashion inspiration, because the show revolves around the fashion industry. The show includes dealing with fashion magazines, big name designers, photo shoots and runway shows.

6. Fashion police

Fashion Police is a great way to keep up to date on what the celebrities are wearing to events and what looks people favor and don't favor. It is a lighthearted look at all the glitz and glamour of the Hollywood scene, so be prepared for lots of jokes and ridiculing.

For example, they feature a segment called starlet or streetwalker where the panel of judges votes on a celebrity look. Each judge has a paddle with starlet on one side and streetwalker on the other. They choose which side they think the star resembles and hold this up. Either way there's lots of laughter involved.
