IT SPINS! Handmade electric motor! Entirely out of wire! They said it couldn't be done, but I have proven -- it merely shouldn't be done!

Photos don't really capture how ridiculously complicated this thing was to build, so I managed to film myself assembling the components too! Very proud of that.

In total, I've been working on this project on and off for roughly two years. This motor is my third version, though I went through something like seven designs of the commutator section (not counting how many failures it took to build a working example of a given design). I'm very proud of getting this to work at all.

Six-way commutator. As the motor spins, this delivers electricity to only the correct pair of magnets at a time, leaving the other four off.

Magnet coils. I wound these by hand from very thin insulated wire. The center is a spiral of thicker insulated wire (darker orange) that protects the thin stands from the steel core and then wraps around the outside to hold everything in place.

Spring-loaded arms. These deliver electricity from the stationary frame into the rotating axle. They also have to hinge up out of the way or else there's no room to fit the rotor in place during assembly.

I love how Electra comes off so evil but they actually like literally never do anything it's so funny. Yes maniacal laughter in multiple productions, being set up like a super cool antagonist and then like uhhhh disappearing actually 💀

So, interestingly enough, I am en electrician, and the ways that electromagnetism and electricity work together is so closely intertwined that writers really should take advantage of how much of a GOD Magneto is. Like he says it somewhere, but he controls a very fundamental force of nature, and in theory, the list of shit he can't do is shorter than what he can with his powers. It's always just a mashup of whether or not the writer is going to take advantage of that, or if they have to nerf him for plot reasons. Like, for instance, he should team up with Storm way more often, because together they'd be overwhelmingly unstoppable.

i think my favorite interpretation of the extent of erik's powers really is if he just decides/knows to lock in cause Theoretically Potentially Maybe Im Not A Scientist Dont Quote Me every atom has the potential to be magnetized. like my brother and i love talking about this cause you just know in the sixties they really werent thinking that much with magneto's powers and then Unfortunately As Humans we learned more and its like 'oh ok so he's an immense threat for a reason beyond what we figured Thats Nice'

him and storm DEF could be more of a threat if they worked consistently together and i loved bein able to see that near the end of FoX and Resurrection. that was rad ....

I’m slowly teaching myself how to make needle lace. When I saw the diagrams in A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism by James Clerk Maxwell, I immediately wanted to try making them into lace.

This is a chaotic and unplanned sample-in-progress because I refuse to learn linearly and absolutely must do complex things right away. I am doing it skeleton style with no fill and I’m eager to see how it turns out.
