Page 14. ---- Man Charged With Getting Public Relief While Earning --- In City Police Court this afternoon, before Magistrate J. M. Farrell, George Ward Payne, living on Division street, was found guilty on a charge of receiving relief from the city “under false pretences and with the intention to defraud.” The accused was allowed to go on suspended sentence but Magistrate Farrell stated that this this, the first case of Its kind to come before the court, was not to be taken as a precedent. T. J. Rlgney conducted the prosecution. The man has a wife and three children under 16 years of age. 

The charge against Payne was that during December be had received the sum of $9, in January $12 and in February $6, from public relief while he was in receipt of a salary from regular employment. 

Evidence was offered by the proescution showing that Payne bad been registered for relief. 

Oscar King, electrical contractor, called to the stand by Mr. Rigney stated that Payne had been in his employ during December, January, and February, and had been engaged as an electrician. 

Mr. Rigney questioned Mr. King as to the amount of money Payne had earned. Witness said that, during December, Payne had been paid approximately $25 in January, in the neighborhood of $50 and in February, the amount was under $10. Witness said he was not prepared to give the exact amounts paid to Payne.

Witness recalled a day in January when he said that Payne quit his work temporary, telling him that he was going down to the relief to secure milk tickets.

“At the time, I told Payne I did not think I was right for him to do this,” said King, “but he said that he might as well, have the milk ticket or words to that effect. This was all the conversation we had about the milk tickets and I do not know if Payne got them or not.”

Witness told Mr. Rigney that during one week in January Payne worked on a job outside the city for four and a half days. This job was at Brewer’s Mills. 

Payne went into the box in his own defence. He stated that he was not working when he went on relief. He said that since going on relief, he had been securing the “odd day's" work and was glad to take the work.“

“I was not getting enough out of relief to keep me," said Payne. Some times I would go four or five days and not get any work and then would get a few hours’ work. 

Mr. Rlgney produced vouchers for food orders the aocused had been given and Payne identified his signature on the orders. 

Questioned by Mr Rigney, Payne stated that he did not know the amount of money he had been paid by Mr. King. He also stated that he had not kept the fact that he was on relief a secret. Asked by Mr. Rigney why he had not informed the relief office that he was at work, Payne stated that he did not know who to inform. He said he had been cut off relief about a week ago. 

Mr. Rigney stated that he did not want the accused to be punished unduly, but pointed out that the money had been received by Payne under false pretences.

“We want to bring home to the minds of the people the acme of honesty,” added Mr Rigney. “The city wants to help those who need help but this is a case of rank dishonesty.” 

Magistrate Farrell said he was satisfied that Payne knew he was doing something improper. He was glad, however, to find that the accused had a desire for work. In his case, he would suspend sentence. 

“This case will be given publicity,” said the Magistrate, “but my derision is not to be taken as a precedent. Each case will have to be dealt with on its own merits.”

Edward Solomon, Jr., 71, of River Street, Forty Fort, died on June 22, 2023 at Maple Ridge, Kingston. 

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Edward Solomon, Sr. and Jean Gates Solomon. He graduated from West Side Tech, as well as, Johnson Technical College and Luzerne Community College. He later joined the Navy Reserves.

Richard had resided in Forty Fort for his entire life.

He was an electrician and worked for UPS. He had started working at the family dairy, Solomon Blue Ridge Dairy

He was a loving brother and uncle.

Surviving is his brother, Richard and his wife, Bonnie, Forty Fort; nephew, Richard Jr., and his wife, Shanna Solomon, nieces, Beth Barnett and her husband, Troy and Jennifer; great nephews, Joseph, Johnathan and Mason Solomon; great nieces, Bria, Molly Ellie Barnett and Rebecca Solomon.

Funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Monday, June 26th at the Hugh B. Hughes & Son, Inc., Funeral Home, 1044 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, with Rev. Gideon Gaitano, officiating. Following the service, the interment will be in Denison Cemetery, Swoyersville.

Family and friends are invited from 9 to 11 AM on Monday, June 26th at the funeral home.

Page 9. ---- Magistrate Granted Request Of Four Escaped Prisoners From Burwash ---- Sudbury, Sept. 7. - Four escaped prisoners from Burwash begged Magistrate Brodie Saturday to send. them to Portsmouth Penitentiary instead of back to the Jail Farm. Their names were Fred Plewes, Frank Turner, James Richards and Frank Taylor. They alleged inhuman treatment. It was pointed out to them that if they were sent to Portsmouth Penitentiary it could not be for less than two years, but they insisted that this sentence be passed, declaring that they dreaded above all things being sent back to the farm. Taylor, Turner and Richards. escaped on August 31 and pleaded guilty. Plewes, the other prisoner, helped them escape by shoving aside. a guard, but did not make a get-away himself. When they were all sentenced to two years. in Portsmouth Penitentiary they thanked the magistrate warmly. Sergeant O'Leary, of Burwash, said that the treatment of the prisoners was left to the discretion of the warden, but did not think they had been as badly used as they alleged.

[Plewes was 31, married, a naturalized Canadian who came to Canada in infancy, and was covered in tattoos on both arms: the Stars and Stripes, the Union Jack, a maple leaf, his war record years (1914-1916, 1918), a wreath with cross, a victory sign, and the logo of the 81th Battalion.
