The Ancient Persian Way to Keep Cool

From ancient Egypt to the Persian Empire, an ingenious method of catching the breeze kept people cool for millennia. In the search for emissions-free cooling, the "wind catcher" could once again come to our aid.

The city of Yazd in the desert of central Iran has long been a focal point for creative ingenuity. Yazd is home to a system of ancient engineering marvels that include an underground refrigeration structure called yakhchāl, an underground irrigation system called qanats, and even a network of couriers called pirradaziš that predate postal services in the US by more than 2,000 years.

Among Yazd's ancient technologies is the wind catcher, or bâdgir in Persian. These remarkable structures are a common sight soaring above the rooftops of Yazd. They are often rectangular towers, but they also appear in circular, square, octagonal and other ornate shapes.

Yazd is said to have the most wind catchers in the world, though they may have originated in ancient Egypt. In Yazd, the wind catcher soon proved indispensable, making this part of the hot and arid Iranian Plateau livable.

Though many of the city's wind catchers have fallen out of use, the structures are now drawing academics, architects and engineers back to the desert city to see what role they could play in keeping us cool in a rapidly heating world.

As a wind catcher requires no electricity to power it, it is both a cost-efficient and green form of cooling. With conventional mechanical air conditioning already accounting for a fifth of total electricity consumption globally, ancient alternatives like the wind catcher are becoming an increasingly appealing option.

There are two main forces that drive the air through and down into the structures: the incoming wind and the change in buoyancy of air depending on temperature – with warmer air tending to rise above cooler, denser air. First, as air is caught by the opening of a wind catcher, it is funneled down to the dwelling below, depositing any sand or debris at the foot of the tower. Then the air flows throughout the interior of the building, sometimes over subterranean pools of water for further cooling. Eventually, warmed air will rise and leave the building through another tower or opening, aided by the pressure within the building.

The shape of the tower, alongside factors like the layout of the house, the direction the tower is facing, how many openings it has, its configuration of fixed internal blades, canals and height are all finely tuned to improve the tower's ability to draw wind down into the dwellings below.

Using the wind to cool buildings has a history stretching back almost as long as people have lived in hot desert environments. Some of the earliest wind-catching technology comes from Egypt 3,300 years ago, according to researchers Chris Soelberg and Julie Rich of Weber State University in Utah. Here, buildings had thick walls, few windows facing the Sun, openings to take in air on the side of prevailing winds and an exit vent on the other side – known in Arabic as malqaf architecture. Though some argue that the birthplace of the wind catcher was Iran itself.

Wherever it was first invented, wind catchers have since become widespread across the Middle East and North Africa. Variations of Iran's wind catchers can be found in the barjeels of Qatar and Bahrain, the malqaf of Egypt, the mungh of Pakistan, and many other places, notes Fatemeh Jomehzadeh of the University of Technology Malaysia and colleagues.

The Persian civilisation is widely considered to have added structural variations to allow for better cooling – such as combining it with its existing irrigation system to help to cool the air down before releasing it throughout the home. In Yazd's hot, dry climate, these structures proved remarkably popular, until the city became a hotspot of soaring ornate towers seeking the desert wind. The historical city of Yazd was recognised as a Unesco World Heritage site in 2017, in part for its proliferation of wind catchers.

As well as performing the functional purpose of cooling homes, the towers also had a strong cultural significance. In Yazd, the wind catchers are as much a part of the skyline as the Zoroastrian Fire Temple and Tower of Silence. Among them is the wind catcher at the Dowlatabad Abad Gardens, said to be the tallest in the world at 33m (108ft) and one of the few wind catchers still in operation. Housed in an octagonal building, it overlooks a fountain stretching past rows of pine trees.

The emissions-free cooling efficacy of such wind catchers make some researchers argue that they are due a revival.

Parham Kheirkhah Sangdeh has extensively studied the scientific application and surrounding culture of wind catchers in contemporary architecture at Ilam University in Iran. He says inconveniences like pests entering the chutes and the gathering of dust and desert debris have meant many have turned away from traditional wind catchers. In their place are mechanical cooling systems, such as conventional air-conditioning units. Often, those options are powered by fossil fuels and use refrigerants that act as powerful greenhouse gases if released into the atmosphere.

The advent of modern cooling technologies has long been blamed for the deterioration of traditional methods in Iran, the historian of Iranian architecture Elizabeth Beazley wrote in 1977. Without constant maintenance, the harsh climate of the Iranian Plateau has worn away many structures from wind catchers to ice houses. Kheirkhah Sangdeh also sees the shift away from wind catchers as in part down to a tendency among the public to engage with technologies from the West.

"There needs to be some changes in cultural perspectives to use these technologies. People need to keep an eye on the past and understand why energy conservation is important," Kheirkhah Sangdeh says. "It starts with recognising cultural history and the importance of energy conservation."

Kheirkhah Sangdeh hopes to see Iran's wind catchers updated to add energy-efficient cooling to existing buildings. But he has met many barriers to his work in the form of ongoing international tensions, the coronavirus pandemic and ongoing water shortage. "Things are so bad in Iran that [people] take it day by day," says Kheirkhah Sangdeh.

Fossil-fuel-free methods of cooling like the wind catcher might well be due a revival, but to a surprising extent they are already present – albeit in a less magnificent form than those in Iran – in many Western countries.

In the UK, some 7,000 variations of wind catchers were installed in public buildings between 1979 and 1994. They can be seen from buildings such as the Royal Chelsea Hospital in London, to supermarkets in Manchester.

These modernised wind catchers bear little resemblance to Iran's towering structures. On one three-storey building on a busy road in north London, small hot pink ventilation towers allow passive ventilation. Atop a shopping centre in Dartford, conical ventilation towers rotate to catch the breeze with the help of a rear wing that keeps the tower facing the prevailing wind.

The US too has adopted wind-catcher-inspired designs with enthusiasm. One such example is the visitor center at Zion National Park in southern Utah. The park sits in a high desert plateau, comparable to Yazd in climate and topography, and the use of passive cooling technologies including the wind catcher nearly eliminated the need for mechanical air-conditioning. Scientists have recorded a temperature difference of 16C (29F) between the outside and inside of the visitor centre, despite the many bodies regularly passing through.

There is further scope for the spread of the wind catcher, as the search for sustainable solutions to overheating continues. In Palermo, Sicily, researchers have found that the climate and prevailing wind conditions make it a ripe location for a version of the Iranian wind catcher. This October, meanwhile, the wind catcher is set to have a high-profile position at the World Expo fair in Dubai, as part of a network of conical buildings in the Austrian pavilion, where the Austrian architecture firm Querkraft has taken inspiration from the Arabic barjeel version of the wind tower.

While researchers such as Kheirkhah Sangdeh argue that the wind catcher has much more to give in cooling homes without fossil fuels, this ingenious technology has already migrated further around the world than you might think. Next time you see a tall vented tower on top of a supermarket, high-rise or school, look carefully – you might just be looking at the legacy of the magnificent wind catchers of Iran.

China Airlines and Mandarin Airlines Make Further Changes to Cross-Strait Services

In accord with Taiwan's updated quarantine policy, China Airlines and Mandarin Airlines are now limiting cross-strait services between 10 February and 29 April 2020 to five destinations: Beijing Capital, Shanghai Pudong, Shanghai Hongqiao, Xiamen and Chengdu with partial services. Rail Geotechnics Site Investigation Case Study: NWEP

The North West Electrification Project (NWEP) is working towards the electrification of over 300km of the rail network, improving key routes between towns and cities including Manchester, Liverpool, Preston and Blackpool. From April 2016, Geotechnics carried out works to inform design of gantry installations for the proposed overhead line equipment on Phases 4 and 5.

We worked on track during weekend and midweek possessions, and our site investigations have primarily focused on collecting geotechnical and environmental information for the project. Another significant section of work has been aimed at locating and identifying shallow mine workings in the area.

The rail network presents a unique set of challenges, not least in gaining access to borehole locations with drilling rigs and significant amounts of equipment in this safety-critical environment. Geotechnics’ Project Manager Steven Chapman built up a strong working relationship with the client in order to overcome any issues. Our collaborative approach – including early engagement with the client, liaison with stakeholders, regular progress reporting and change control – has been critical to our success on the project.

One solution for accessing borehole locations was Geotechnics’ specialist modular dynamic sampling rig. This rig can be broken down into its constituent parts, which enables it to be moved more quickly and easily into hard-to-reach areas than conventional equipment allows. We have also used Road Rail Vehicles (RRVs) to lift rigs and equipment into positions in the cess, 4 foot and onto station platforms.

Off-track works have also been completed for proposed distribution compounds, as well as an investigation for a proposed section of horizontal directional drilling to install 25kv electrical cabling. This section of the works included deep rotary boreholes, in-situ packer permeability testing and specialist rock testing.

On completion of significant geotechnical, rock, concrete and environmental laboratory testing, Geotechnics produced factual and interpretive reports on time and on budget. These reports include data sheets for each gantry location, detailing the ground conditions, foundation solutions, groundwater conditions and environmental considerations.

What, precisely, is switchgear? You have a few options

It is common knowledge that a power surge may do significant damage to an electrical system in a structure. If the amount of electricity flowing through a wire is too high for the circuit, the wire may overheat. All circuits have different maximum power ratings.

Potential for electrical component damage and fire. Switchgears are built to shield devices connected to the grid from electrical overload, which poses a threat to electrically operated machinery. If you could explain what you mean by the term "switchgear," and how it is utilised, that would be great.

Switchgear is a broad term for the assortment of switching devices used to manage, protect, and isolate power distribution systems. It may be necessary to expand this definition to include equipment such as circuit breakers, power metres, and the like. The Manchester HV/LV Switchgear plays a crucial role in this context. This section discusses medium-voltage switchgears (MV). There is a large range of possible switchboard configurations. How robust, flexible, and reliable the answer has to be is what matters most.

Voltage, effective voltage, constant voltage tolerance, and impulse voltage are some of the specifications for a produced MV switchgear panel.

The insulating technique and the intended application both play a role in classifying MV switchgear. When used properly, a switch allows electricity to flow across a closed circuit by the use of a mechanical action. This prevents electricity from flowing through the instrument but has no long-term effects on it. One possible use for a switch is as a circuit breaker, while another is as a disconnector or isolator.

Top marks to the BIM Show Live team and the delegates for putting on a fantastic show this week despite of the worst snow in Newcastle for the last decade. A review and some useful links from some of the sessions below... 1. Dave Philp, Digital Built Britain As always with BIM Show Live, Dave Philp opened the show. He arrived on stage with an electric guitar player playing 'I would walk 500 miles', which was fitting considering the weather conditions and the public transport options to get to the conference! Dave gave an update from Digital Built Britain. He promoted the success of the standards, the difference this was making at home and the recognition this was getting overseas. There was a mention of ISO 19650 parts 1 and 2 which are now well progressed and looked at the influence the PAS 1192 standards have had over these. Looking to the future, the Government want to create a 'National Digital Twin' of the countries physical infrastructure. But let's get the foundations right. 2. Rob Charlton, Space Group Rob gave the state of the nation address. He reflected on previous years where he looked at which disciplines were adopting BIM and which were not. Rob now believes everyone is committed. He then looked at some examples that he sees through his BIM Technologies business. The big private sector clients, the big tier one contractors and the university estates and building teams - all now fully committed to a digital future.

Is everyone perfectly adopting the PAS 1192 standards? Maybe not, but it's not similar to ISO 9001. Where we may not be perfect. But the majority are now 'there or thereabouts'. AI, Blockchain, VR and AR were identified as emerging technologies. But then there was a reflection on Carillion going out of business and the disaster that was Grenfell. Why is the construction industry on the front page of the newspapers for the wrong reason. How can we check that what is specified is specified correctly and then is followed through on site? There used to be a clerk of works working for the client that gave reassurance on quality. Can we use new technology to provide a 'digital clerk of works' checking that the products specified are installed and the quality levels specified are followed? Personally speaking, this message is one that the data providers and software companies can help with. Provide standardised data structures, provide technology that helps coordinate this and provide technologies that help provide transparency of decision making. 3. Anders Hvid, Dare Disrupt Anders looked at how digital technologies have changed and are changing the world. He started by looking at the improvements in robotics in recent years. The Future of Vision and Eye Care

More than 80 percent of perception comes through vision

Researchers estimate that 80-85 percent of our perception, learning, cognition, and activities are mediated through vision. Compared to that, our hearing only processes 11 percent of information, while smell 3.5 percent, touch 1.5 percent and taste 1 percent. Don’t you think that’s possible? Renowned scholars, L.D. Rosenblum, Harold Stolovitch and Erica Keeps explained these numbers with the following, rather convincing story.

Imagine you are in an open field, the sun shines on you, with the bees humming softly in the air. How far can you see and hear? When it comes to vision, it’s around 50 miles, talking about hearing, it’s only 1-2 miles at best! What about the smell of the flowers? Without the wind blowing, only 10-20 meters. How about touching or tasting? Well, it depends on your arm’s length, but obviously not further than that. And the same goes for your tongue and tasting.

It is almost a cliché to emphasize the importance of the eyes and vision, but it’s a luminous example to illustrate how the eyes are our most important sensory organ. Hence, if you catch an eye disease or have to face a serious eye condition, you feel very motivated to get better immediately.

Eye conditions affect way too many people worldwide

The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness estimated in 2015 that 36 million of people are blind, and 217 million people suffer from moderate or severe distance vision impairment. It is a hopeful tendency that the prevalence of blindness and vision impairment combined has dropped from 4.58% in 1990 to 3.37% in 2015. The decrease can be attributed to progress in technology, for example in surgical techniques and concerning treating eye infections.

Yet, digital health still has a lot to do for lessening plenty of suffering which comes from not being able to see the world clearly. In the last couple of years, it actually started to undertake the task to transform the field of ophthalmology, offering its innovative solutions for the broadest spectrum of eye conditions. Treating less serious ailments gets faster, more targeted and more efficient, while the means for curing more serious and life-altering illnesses improve. Here, I outlined the way technology delineates for the future of eye care and vision.

Types of conditions causing blindness, such as AMD or retinitis pigmentosa, an inherited eye condition causing loss of sight gradually and causing blindness for an estimated 1.5 million people worldwide, have been treated successfully with mind-blowing innovations.

The California-based firm, Second Sight, the German company, Retina Implant AG, and French venture, Pixium Vision, develops implantable visual prosthetics to restore vision to patients who are blind as a result of the rare condition of retinitis pigmentosa. In 2016, The Guardian reported that a blind woman suffering from it was fitted with the implant labeled “bionic eye” in the UK as part of a trial at the Oxford Eye Hospital. She has spoken of her joy after she was able to tell the time for the first time in more than six years. That must have been truly amazing!

In 2015, surgeons in Manchester, UK have performed the first bionic eye implant for an AMD patient using Second Sight’s innovation. The 80-year-old Ray Flynn lost entirely his central vision, but with the help of the retinal implant, he could make out shapes on the computer screen. Researchers say that the implant cannot provide any highly detailed vision – but it can help patients detect distinct patterns such as door frames and shapes.

Brain implants and artificial retina instead of bionic eyes?

As Second Sight’s current Argus II device for helping people with retinitis pigmentosa only restore minimal vision and cost $150,000, they only sold 250 of them so far. A while ago, the company started to develop a modified version of its innovation, which completely leaves the eye out of the procedure and instead mobilizes the part of the brain responsible for processing visual information, the visual cortex. Delivering electrical pulses here should tell the brain to perceive patterns of light. The company hopes that this new innovation could help about 6 million people in the future who are blind due to other causes, like cancer, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, or trauma. The company hopes to begin enrolling patients for trials in October and do its first implant by the end of the year. We can’t wait to know more about it!

Instead of “bionic eyes” that stimulate brain cells with lights coming from a tiny video camera or stimulate the visual cortex directly through electrodes, the Italian Institute of Technology has developed a new approach for treating retinal degeneration, with a prosthesis implanted into the eye that serves as a working replacement for a damaged retina – basically an artificial retina. Their research showed promising results for lab rats, and they plan to carry out the first human trials in the second half of 2017 and gather preliminary results during 2018.

The miraculous CRISPR and other gene therapies for regaining vision

CRISPR-Cas9 or as used in plain language, CRISPR, the breakthrough gene editing method, has already shown its potential future use in eye care. Experts even say the eye is an ideal place to start for the first clinical use of CRISPR. Compared to other parts of the body, the eye is easy to access for surgery, readily accepts new tissue and can be noninvasively monitored.

Scientists at Columbia University Medical Center and the University of Iowa used CRISPR to repair a genetic mutation responsible for retinitis pigmentosa in induced pluripotent stem cells derived from a patient with the disease. The team reported a 13 percent success rate at converting the mutated gene variant into the normal one which is way better than previous studies. In February 2017, experts at the Center for Genome Engineering, within the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) reported the use of CRISPR in performing “gene surgery” in the layer of tissue that supports the retina of living mice. After the intervention, the mice showed signs of improvement from AMD. It is a ground-breaking experiment suggesting that CRISPR can not only be used to correct mutations causing hereditary diseases but also in the case of non-hereditary degenerative diseases.

Beyond CRISPR, other gene therapies also have a great chance to become a common treatment method for specific eye conditions in the future. Early October 2017, the FDA’s advisory panel approved a gene therapy called Luxturna, which targets a rare condition called Leber congenital amaurosis. Thus, the treatment method got one step closer to full FDA approval. The agency will make its final decision by next January. If the verdict is positive, the gene therapy will be the first approved treatment in the US to correct an inherited genetic trait – but it might be followed very soon by much more.

Eye care patients will also become the point of care

With the advancement of smartphones and other smart gadgets at lightning speed, it is only a matter of time before portable devices will appear on a large scale in ophthalmology as well. The tiny, well-designed and connected instruments and the accompanying apps make it possible to undertake eye examinations anywhere in the world – making patients the point of care.

For example, Peek Retina is the flagship product of Peek Vision, a UK-based company and foundation, a portable ophthalmoscope that enables you to view and capture retinal images on your smartphone wherever you are. The venture also offers smartphone-based vision eye tests, e.g. for measuring visual acuity. It greatly helps physicians in remote areas such as Sub-Saharan Africa diagnose and treat patients.

The MIT-spinout company, EyeNetra developed a diagnostic device for signaling refractive errors fast and accurately. The device, called Netra, is a plastic, binocular-like headset to be used with an app which calculates the difference between what the user indicates as “aligned” and the actual alignment of various patterns. This signals any refractive errors, such as near-sightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The app then displays the refractive powers, the axis of astigmatism, and the pupillary distance required for eyeglasses prescriptions. EyeNetra will make school or workplace eye examinations in the future a lot easier than today.

Are 3D printed and digital contact lenses the future?

Digital contact lenses sound as science fiction: the translucid layer on your eye transmitting special information about your body to an outside device. Yet, it might be a reality soon. For example, Google teamed up with Novartis, to produce digital, multi-sensor contact lenses which are designed to be able to measure blood sugar levels.

Google and Novartis said the lens would contain a tiny and ultra slim microchip that would be embedded in one of its thin concave sides. Through its equally tiny antenna, it would send data about the glucose measurements from the user’s tears to his or her paired smartphone via installed software. Originally, the companies promised to put the digital contact lens around 2020 on the market. However, in March 2017 Novartis Chairman Joerg Reinhardt talked down the chances of the project bringing visible results in the next couple of years. I truly hope this is just a temporary setback.

Meanwhile, researchers at the University of Washington have created a contact lens with an LED display built into it – with the help of a 3D printer! While it is really difficult to manufacture a contact lens, which is one-third of a millimeter in diameter, a 3D printer sandwiches together different layers of interacting material, which makes it easier to place together so tiny pieces. While it was only an experiment, the research has important implications to improve the display technology of small devices. Maybe Google will 3D print the next generation of digital contact lenses, who knows?

Healing the eye faster

Innovation in regenerative medicine is flourishing: dentistry, dermatology, ophthalmology. A few specialties which can take pride in healing injured or diseased body parts faster and in a more efficient way.

For example, researchers in Turkey developed a regenerative medicine, that can heal the front of the eye in as little as two days after surgery. The drug called Cacicol stimulates faster tissue repair, appears to relieve eye pain, burning, and light sensitivity following an invasive intervention. Scientists treated with Cacicol patients suffering from a rare disease called keratoconus who went through a surgery known as corneal cross-linking. The drug helped decrease the initial healing from 5 days.

Artificial Intelligence for detecting eye conditions in time

Image recognition algorithms have the capacity to transform diagnostics based on medical imaging. In 2016, Google developed an eye-scanning technique for looking at retinal images and detecting diabetic retinopathyas well as a trained ophthalmologist. The disease is quite common among diabetes patients, and if it is not spotted early enough it may cause blindness. The machine-learning algorithm uses Google’s method for labeling millions of Web images as it examines photos of a patient’s retina to spot tiny aneurisms indicating the early stages of diabetic retinopathy. A year later, the search giant announced they have begun working on integrating the technology into a chain of eye hospitals in India.

Google is not the only one working on A.I. solutions for eye care, though. A teenage girl from India, whose grandfather in India was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy, developed a smartphone app that can screen for the disease with the help of a specially trained artificial intelligence program and a simple 3D-printed lens attachment. A truly disruptive innovation: smart, cheap and potentially life-changing!

Eye conditions through augmented reality

Patient education is key in prevention and it also gives the best chance for physicians arriving at the most accurate diagnosis based on their patients’ explanation of their symptoms.

The use of Orca Health’s EyeDecide could bring exactly this result. The innovative, Utah-based mobile software company’s medical app uses an augmented reality camera display for simulating the impact of specific conditions on a person’s vision. EyeDecide can fully demonstrate the consequences of cataract or AMD and thus help patients understand their actual medical state.

Cyborgization is upon us?

I’m hopeful that eye conditions, visual impairment, and blindness will be entirely treatable in the future, even if that would mean their replacement with fully capable technologies. I believe the biggest ethical challenge of eye implants or devices replacing visual functions could be that it might facilitate cyborgization.

What if healthy people would like to live as Neil Harbisson? As someone whose vision is extended through an external technology? What if the average user will ask for bionic eyes as it does not get tired, you can zoom with it, browse and search online, even take photos that no one else could see?

Neil Harbisson is actually an artist born with achromatopsia or extreme colorblindness meaning he could only see in black-and-white. Harbisson received a specialized electronic eye, his “eyeborg” to be able to render perceived colors as sounds on the musical scale. He is capable of experiencing colors beyond the scope of normal human perception: Amy Winehouse is red and pink, while ringtones are green. In his view, cyborgization might start with a third eye on the back of the head or an implanted sensor indicating whether there is a car behind you.

If you are entirely freaked out by now, I have to tell you, we are rather far from implanting third eyes into people. However, we have to start to contemplate about the possibilities of such scenarios as we will arrive at the boundaries of privacy, ethics – and the ultimate merging of the human body with technology. We have to be ready for that!

Robots solving climate change

The two biggest societal challenges for the twenty-first century are also the biggest opportunities – automation and climate change. The confluence of these forces of mankind and nature intersect beautifully in the alternative energy market. The epitaph of fossil fuels with its dark cloud burning a hole in the ozone layer is giving way to a rise of solar and wind farms worldwide. Servicing these plantations are fleets of robots and drones, providing greater possibilities of expanding CleanTech to the most remote regions of the planet.

As 2017 comes to end, the solar industry for the first time in ten years has plateaued due to the proposed budget cuts by the Trump administration. Solar has had quite a run with an average annual growth rate of more than 65% for the past decade promoted largely by federal subsidies. The progressive policy of the Obama administration made the US a leader in alternative energy, resulting in a quarter-million new jobs. While the Federal Government now re-embraces the antiquated allure of fossil fuels, the global demand for solar has been rising as infrastructure costs decline by more than half, providing new opportunities without government incentives.

Prior to the renewal energy boom, unattractive roof tiles were the the most visible image of solar. While Elon Musk, and others are developing more aesthetically pleasing roofing materials, the business model of house-by-house conversion has been proven inefficient. Instead, the industry is focusing on “utility-scale” solar farms that will be connected to the national grid. Until recently, such farms have been straddled with ballooning servicing costs.

In a report published last month, leading energy risk management company DNV GL exclaimed that the alternative energy market could benefit greatly by utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics in designing, developing, deploying and maintaining utility farms. The study “Making Renewables Smarter: The Benefits, Risks, And Future of Artificial Intelligence In Solar And Wind” cited that “fields of resource forecasting, control and predictive maintenance” are ripe for tech disruption. Elizabeth Traiger, co-author of the report, explained, “Solar and wind developers, operators, and investors need to consider how their industries can use it, what the impacts are on the industries in a larger sense, and what decisions those industries need to confront.”

Since solar farms are often located in arid, dusty locations, one of the earliest use cases for unmanned systems was self-cleaning robots. As reported in 2014, Israeli company Ecoppia developed a patented waterless panel-washing platform to keep solar up and running in the desert. Today, Ecoppia is cleaning 10 million panels a month. Eran Meller, Chief Executive of Ecoppia, boasts, “We’re pleased to bring the experience gained over four years of cleaning in multiple sites in the Middle East. Cleaning 80 million solar panels in the harshest desert conditions globally, we expect to continue to play a leading role in this growing market.”

Since Ecoppia began selling commercially, there have been other entries into the unmanned maintenance space. This past March, Exosun became the latest to offer autonomous cleaning bots. The track equipment manufacturer claims that robotic systems can cut production losses by 2%, promising a return on investment within 18 months. After their acquisition of Greenbotics in 2013, US-based SunPower also launched its own mechanized cleaning platform, the Oasis, which combines mobile robots and drones.

SunPower brags that its products are ten times faster than traditional (manual) methods using 75% less water. While SunPower and Exosun leverage their large sales footprint with their existing servicing and equipment networks, Ecoppia is still the product leader. Its proprietary waterless solution offers the most cost-effective and connected solution on the market. Via a robust cloud network, Ecoppia can sense weather fluctuations to automatically schedule emergency cleanings. Anat Cohen Segev, Director of Marketing, explains, “Within seconds, we would detect a dust storm hitting the site, the master control will automatically suggest an additional cleaning cycle and within a click the entire site will be cleaned.” According to Segev, the robots remove 99% of the dust on the panels.

Drone companies are also entering the maintenance space. Upstart Aerial Power claims to have designed a “SolarBrush” quadcopter that cleans panels. The solar-powered drone professes to reduce 60% of a solar farm’s operational costs. Solar Brush also promises an 80% savings over existing solutions like Ecoppia since there are no installation costs. However, Aerial Power has yet to fly its product in the field as it is still in development. SolarPower is selling its own drone survey platform to assess development sites and oversee field operations. Matt Campbell, Vice President of Power Plant Products for SunPower, stated “A lot of the beginning of the solar industry was focused on the panel. Now we’re looking at innovation all around the rest of the system. That’s why we’re always surveying new technology — whether it’s a robot, whether it’s a drone, whether it’s software — and saying, ‘How can this help us reduce the cost of solar, build projects faster, and make them more reliable?’”

In 2008, The US Department of Energy published an ambitious proposal to have “20% Wind Energy by 2030: Increasing Wind Energy’s Contribution to U.S. Electricity Supply.” Presently at thirteen years before the goal, less than 5% of US energy is derived from wind. Developing wind farms is not novel, however to achieve 20% by 2030 the US needs to begin looking offshore. To put it in perspective, oceanic wind farms could generate more than 2,000 gigawatts of clean, carbon-free energy, or twice as much electricity as Americans currently consume. To date, there is only one wind farm operating off the coast of the United States. While almost every coastal state has proposals for offshore farms, the industry has been stalled by politics and servicing hurdles in dangerous waters.

For more than a decade the United Kingdom has led the development of offshore wind farms. At the University of Manchester, a leading group of researchers has been exploring a number of AI, robotic and drone technologies for remote inspections. The consortium of academics estimates that these technologies could generate more than $2.5 billion by 2025 in just the UK alone. The global offshore market could reach $17 billion by 2020, with 80% of the costs from operations and maintenance.

Last month, Innovate UK awarded $1.6 million to Perceptual Robotics and VulcanUAV to incorporate drones and autonomous boats into ocean inspections. These startups follow the business model of successful US inspection upstarts, like SkySpecs. Launched three years ago, SkySpecs’ autonomous drones claim to reduce turbine inspections from days to minutes. Danny Ellis, SkySpecs Chief Executive, claims “Customers that could once inspect only one-third of a wind farm can now do the whole farm in the same amount of time.” Last year, British startup Visual Working accomplished the herculean feat of surpassing 2000 blade inspections.

In the words of Paolo Brianzoni, Chief Executive of Visual Working: “We are not talking about what we intend to accomplish in the near future – but actually performing our UAV inspection service every day out there. Many in the industry are using considerable amount of time discussing and testing how to use UAV inspections in a safe and efficient way. We have passed that point and have alone in the first half of 2016 inspected 250 turbines in the North Sea averaging more then 10WTG per day, and still keeping to the “highest quality standards.’”

This past summer, Europe achieved another clean-energy milestone with the announcement of three new offshore wind farms for the first time without government subsidies. By bringing down the cost structure, autonomous systems are turning the tide of alternate energy regardless of government investment. Three days before leaving office, President Barack Obama wrote in the journal Science last year that “Evidence is mounting that any economic strategy that ignores carbon pollution will impose tremendous costs to the global economy and will result in fewer jobs and less economic growth over the long term.” He declared that it is time to move past common misconceptions that climate policy is at odds with business, “rather, it can boost efficiency, productivity, and innovation.”

Cebu Pacific Cancels All Flights to Hong Kong and Macau

Cebu Pacific has cancelled all flights between Philippines and Hong Kong, as well as Macau, until 29 February 2020. Flights to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Xiamen in mainland China have been cancelled until 29 March 2020. Foreigners, except those who have PR in Philippines, who've visited those cities, or elsewhere in China, within the past 14 days won't be allowed to check-in for their flight.

Filipinos and PR holders arriving in back Philippines on international flights who have been to mainland China, HK and/or Macau with 14 days of the date of arrival will be required to undergo a home quarantine process. Travellers who are concerned whether they are affected by these Cebu Pacific decisions should contact the airline directly. Cebu Pacific has said that passengers will be able to rebook their flights or get a refund. Terms and conditions apply. Health data: Close your rings and the Watch is free

Life insurer John Hancock is extending a programme that lets policyholders earn an Apple Watch for free through regular exercise, which will have clear health benefits (and presumably lower aggregate claim rates for insurers). John Hancock says that monthly payments for the Watch are based on the number of workouts completed and that in 11 months half of participants have been paying nothing because they’re meeting their activity goals. It’s not entirely clear what happens with the user data though. Insurer Aetna has a similar programme for employees.

Tesco Clubcard data will be evaluated by GPs in a healthier eating trial in Oxford - volunteers with higher cholesterol will be paid to participate. The trial tests the feasibility of advice in the form of a “personalised report each month with information of the saturated fat content of their food purchases from Tesco”. However, Scotland may be going further: it’s considering banning the promotion of foods that are high in fat, salt or sugar [link requires registration]. Imagine a smart basket or till that wouldn’t let you select that Double Decker because you’re signed up to the supermarket’s Vitality+ club, or an online service that does let you order it but quietly delivers a healthier replacement.

Amazon Key: delivery to your hall

A couple of weeks ago we mentioned Amazon’s experiment to deliver packages to the inside of your home. This week the project launched - Amazon Key. Free installation of smart door lock and a Cloud Cam. “Amazon Key also opens the door to future integration with in-home service providers, such as cleaners and pet sitters, in the coming months. The company intends to give home-owners the ability to let third parties enter, conduct their business, and depart with the house fastened up securely.” The obvious next step would be Amazon insuring against losses and damages related to third parties, friends or hackers having access to your home. The obvious step after that would be to creating housing inside Amazon warehouses.

Big box retailer leases restrict Whole Foods

Big box retailers with leases in large shopping malls can prevent Amazon/Whole Foods from setting up shop, or limit their activities if they do (Whole Foods has 473 stores, most of which are leased). Amazon may be growth-constrained for a few years by these restrictions on but in time Amazon will start to benefit from the same leases itself. Shopping malls are facing difficult conditions, primarily due to massive over supply of retail space, so in time Amazon may find unrestricted leases easier to acquire. Or perhaps it will become a real estate owner itself, unencumbered by restrictive leases. Or even a shopping mall owner leasing to others, gathering footfall and other shopper data at scale to plan its own future retail offers.

Public transport

LA Metro looks to rideshare companies like Uber, Lyft, and Chariot to build the future of public transit. “Microtransit”: something in between a big bus that follows a rigid route and a personal ride that takes you door to door. (See also: Citymapper in London.)

Rural areas in the UK need a plan B to address the transport crisis: public transport is being cut but private companies aren’t filling the gaps because rural transport is hard (long journies, lower passenger density etc).

New Yorkers will be able to pay for their commute using a Transport for London’s contactless fare system, which was licensed to Cubic for resale. (Contactless: 2m journeys a day in London.)

China’s social credit score

China is building a “social credit score” system (see last year), which it says will measure and enhance trust and build a culture of sincerity. It will be mandatory for all citizens by 2020. Acknowledging or rewarding good deeds sounds good, as does encouraging a richer social fabric. But an Orwellian surveillance society, not so good. “The government is attempting to make obedience feel like gaming. It is a method of social control dressed up in some points-reward system."

In brief

20% of under-35s have tried a vegan diet, and over half a million in the UK identify as vegan. A desire for healthier lifestyles is behind the growth, and startups (snack box deliveries, vending machines, content channels etc) have followed.

Winnow says that it halves food waste in commercial kitchens with technology that makes hotel, retail and school kitchens more aware of what is being wasted.

UCL’s Inst for Global Prosperity report suggests that the central NHS principle be extended to cover housing, food, transport and IT - it would boost incomes of those most at risk of job automation and growing inequality, and be an alternate approach to Universal Basic Income.

After 7 and half years Open Data Manchester has become a Community Interest Company.

Usage patterns: Fewer than half Snapchat Spectacles owners used glasses after 1 month - the challenge of hardware businesses. See also smart watches, mobile phones, smart home assistants etc. “Biggest drop in Facebook organic reach we have ever seen“ - though is there much that’s "organic" about FB feeds any more? “Usage of both Alexa and Google Home show that over 60% of all usage is generated when the user’s hands are busy with another task” [citation needed].

This is how Big Oil will die - self-driving cars will be electric for cost reasons, and the costs will go low enough that the oil refining industry won’t survive.

A presentation deck you’ll never forget. SoftBank’s 30 year vision in 2010 was about happiness and sadness. There are pie charts about sorrow. There are many gems (“Think till our brains crush”), but the bank is serious: it launched a $100 billion technology investment fund this year. And improving loneliness: yes.

A year ago in the newsletter: “Amazon is to pilot 20 brick-and-mortar grocery stores in the US over the next two years” - the Go experiment has taken longer to get right; on the other hand, Whole Foods.
