I realised I hadn't posted a greenhouse report since spring, and today seemed like a good day for a 2023 home-grown food review!
2023 was a great year for fruit; my apple & plum trees were so generous! In the greenhouse my most successful crops were tomatoes, red chilli peppers, beans, and pickles. I was able to make spicy plum chutney using my own plums, onions and peppers:
Tumblr media
On the other hand I was unlucky with my non-greenhouse vegetables, there were so many insects this year and my courgettes got absolutely decimated. But then I complained about my bad courgette luck to some neighbours and was gifted 9 courgettes and 3 pumpkins. I spent the first half of my autumn cooking and freezing and pickling and preserving to try not to let anything go to waste; I made:
7 jars of pesto (with greenhouse basil); 8 jars of pasta sauce (with courgette-pumpkin-tomato-red peppers-onions-basil, + parmesan); an unknown but large amount of pumpkin-tomato soup (I put them in empty glass bottles and freeze them); 7 jars of spicy plum chutney; 2 small bottles of spicy oil for my pizzas (with some of my chilli peppers; the rest are still drying by the stove to become chilli powder); 5 jars of plum jam and 3 of blackberry jam (I also froze several kg of whole blackberries for winter desserts); 6 jars of pickles (they are delicious!! I'd never pickled pickles before this year, I'm really happy with the result); 12 small bottles of elderberry syrup; 4 large bottles of elderflower syrup; hundreds of little apple sweets; several bottles of apple juice; an absolutely dizzying amount of apple puree / compote / jelly, because I refused to leave any leftover apples for the dormouse population. They are not my friends.
(If you think I'm being too mean to the dormice, please know that a) they are unrepentant thieves; b) I became so competent at hiding my apples that a dormouse ended up sneaking into the shower at night to eat my soap. My bar of homemade (not by me) goat milk soap. It's hazelnut scented so I guess if you're a rodent it just smells like lunch.)
I took some stuff out of the freezer just long enough to take this family picture; though I already gave away a lot of things to guests and neighbours, so it's just what's left! (I also froze enough chopped onions to last until summer I think)
Tumblr media
I am terrible at labelling my jars; in my hubris I always assume I'll just remember where I put which kind of sauce or flavour of compote. I never remember. I end up having to give my guests mystery jars, like "this is fruit jelly! Made with... fruits"
So it wouldn't get too monotonous I added various fruits to my apple purees: apple-raspberry, apple-blueberry, -plum, -blackberry... I also made a few jars of apple-pineapple-pumpkin compote because I had too much pumpkin and I regret not focusing on that from the start, this combo tasted so good and was the most cheerful yellow colour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I finally used my last apples last week, making apple-quince paste which is currently drying in order to become sweets. I bought some pretty & thick paper to origami a few boxes to put them in, so I'll have New Year presents for my courgette-providing neighbours. <3
Tumblr media
(My cats are currently banned from this room so they won't try to lick the fruit paste) (they don't even like it, they're just cats)

Happy NYE/NY everyone!
Because 'tis the season for reflection, I went through my camera roll and picked out the 9 projects from this year that I'm proudest of.
(We all know what posts from this year got the most online attention, but I think it's important to be introspective and think about what projects and posts were actually most valuable to me. Anyways. /soapbox)
Swan Song Scarf (Jasmine Lin, Crafty Coola). This is my design, and although I released it a good while ago, I'm still incredibly proud of it. I spent a lot of time sketching, charting, knitting, ripping back... it was a labor of love, but I'm proud that I stuck with it and got a result I'm happy with. Yarn: Miss Babs Yummy 2-Ply (World in a Book and Light Clematis)
Woodland Cardigan (Anna Johanna, Where We Once Knitted). This was my first time steeking, and yeah, I'm pretty gosh-darned proud of that. Yarn: Knit Picks Palette (Wonderland Heather and Calypso Heather)
Anza Dress (Kennis Wong, Itch to Stitch). This was my first time installing buttons, making (sewn) buttonholes, using interfacing (...don't judge me), and sewing scoop pockets. So many new techniques for me, but it created such a polished product and was an excellent learning opportunity. I'm so glad I took the leap with this pattern. Fabric: Singer Brand Cotton Poplin (2 yards)
Color Triangle (p: do you love the color of the sky?). This was my first time using powdered acid dye (read: Big Girl Dye instead of tie-dye/Rit/food coloring)! Obviously the whole color-formulating process for the Color of the Sky shenanigans remains in progress, but I'm proud of this triangle as it is anyways. Fiber: Knit Picks Stroll Bare, Dye: G&S Acid Dyes
Custom Intarsia Blanket. This depicts DNA replication using restriction enzymes and DNA ligase. I did this one for a custom commission, and I'm proud of myself for a) designing it, b) being so free with it, and c) getting to make something science-y! I sketched a rough plan before beginning, but I had to make an absurd amount of adjustments along the way -- in the end, I even had to duplicate stitch over the restriction enzyme bit with a half-strand (i.e. half the plies) of yarn since the stash yarn was too fine. I'm so used to planning everything and then being stubborn; this was a great exercise in adaptability and letting go.
Elderberry Dress (Shavonne Cruz, Mood Sewciety). I'm not one to do muslins or even much fitting on my sewing projects. I tend to just take patterns straight out of the envelope and then sew them, consequences be damned. This dress, though? After each wear, I've been making little adjustments to improve it; shaping the neckline and adjusting the fit, amongst other things. That's something I want to carry forward for my future projects.
Eliane Scrubs (Jalie). These aren't anything particularly special from a technical perspective, but they are possibly my most-worn me-made EVER. They've held up to weekly wear and washing and I'm proud of them for that, as well as of myself for letting my babies "do their job" instead of hiding them way out of fear. Fabric: cotton poplin
Fractal Yarn (p: swirling solar winds). I spun most of this for Tour de Fleece (which feels like a lifetime ago!) and it's a huge accomplishment for me. I'm often afraid to break down gradient braids, so doing a fractal spin was a first for me! I also got it nice and fine; a practical weight for what I usually work with. Fiber: Emily C Gillies (now House of Wool) Luck of the Draw December 2022 on Merino/Silk
Handspun Sweater (p: we pull apart the stars). Ok, so this isn't finished, but handspun sweater. I think that speaks for itself as far as why I'm proud!

Black Elderberry.
[Excerpt arranged by me from the Dictionary of Medicinal and Poisonous Plants of France by P..V Fournier.]
Tumblr media
Elderberry, Suseau, Susier, Sus, Seus, Seuillet, Seuillon, Haut-bois, Grand Elder, Tree of Judas.
Sambucus nigra. This name is surely linked to the Greek σαμβύκη, sambukê which among the Greeks designated a flute or a harp, the hollow stems of the elderberry allowing music to be made.*
Generalities : Shrub or small tree from 3 to 10 m, the Elderberry is widespread everywhere in the hedges, the villages, less often in the woods and on the banks of the rivers. It bears numerous opposite branches, leaves and flowers.
They bloom in May-June, giving off a very pronounced particular odor and become yellowish as they dry out. They give birth to spherical berries, first green, then purplish black, shiny, with red juice.
Its flowers are not very nectariferous and therefore of no interest to bees.
-
Toxicity: The leaves and the second bark are toxic due to their hydrocyanic acid content when fresh and in high doses.
Tumblr media
History : Already, prehistoric populations collected elderberries and perhaps made a fermented drink from them, as can be concluded from seed heaps found in Stone Age and Bronze Age sites in Switzerland. and in Italy.
This shrub was well known in antiquity. Theophrastus describes him as Aktê. The Hippocratics (4th century BC) attribute laxative, diuretic and gynecological properties to it.
Dioscorides says that the leaves and the young shoots cooked like vegetables chase away bile and pituite*; the root cooked in wine is given to dropsy, acts against the bites of vipers and is an emmenagogue*; it is also used as an ointment against gout.
The same indications are found in the Middle Ages, Saint Hildegarde recommends against jaundice, baths prepared with the leaves.
Saint Albert the Great (12th century) declared the bark, leaves and stems purgative and emetic. He reports a belief, stemming from sympathetic magic, according to which the bark would be laxative when it was detached from the trunk from top to bottom, and emetic if one operated in the opposite direction.
Tumblr media
Properties :
The bark, leaves, flowers and fruits are used. All these parts appear unequally sudorific, dieuretic, purgative, emetic, and externally: detergent and resolvent.
The inner bark or second bark (liber) which forms a green base under the gray outer bark (suber), is in the fresh state, the most active part of the Elderberry. Sweetish at first, its flavor then becomes bitter, acrid and nauseous. The root would act even more energetically.
Externally ringworm has been successfully treated with an ointment made from pounded fresh bark and boiled in lard.
In addition, in application or in the form of an ointment, they are used to soothe hemorrhoid pain and heal them.
Leaf powder that is inhaled is also said to stop nosebleeds.
-
Perspiration caused by Elder flowers can abort bronchitis, angina, pneumonia.
The decoction of dry flowers provides excellent compresses on eczema and erysiple, good lotions against conjunctivitis and chronic ophthalmia.
The fresh flowers (very energetic) are used effectively against engorgements, cold tumours, paronychia, gangrenous wounds, ulcers, strong local inflammations and burns.
The fruits are very good for acute rheumatic fever because they also have calming properties in addition to diuretics.
Tumblr media
Manual :
Diuretic decoction: 2 handfuls of second bark in a liter of water. Reduce by half by boiling.
Sudorific infusion of dry flowers: 10 to 50g per liter of boiling water. To be taken by hot cups close together.
Diuretic wine: 150g of second peel in 1 liter of white wine infused for 36 hours.
Powder of dry leaves: 10 to 15g in honey.
Surard vinegar: 10g of dry flowers macerated for a fortnight in 1 liter of wine vinegar. 4 to 10g in a cup of hot sugary water (very good for colds, high fevers and rheumatism.) This preparation can be used as toilet vinegar (?!)
Sudorific infusions composed of: Elder flowers and Linden flowers and the flowering tops of Sage (dosage in "one for one".)
-
For external use:
In infusion and decoctions 100g of flowers per liter of water.
Hot sachets of Elderberry (sometimes with Chamomile) applied locally against pain in the ears, teeth, stomach and joints.
Use against insect and viper bites: in friction and in decoction of leaves.
-

*Pituite (from the Latin pituita), also called phlegm or phlegm, is an old medical term, which has hardly been used since the middle of the 20th century, and which could be related to phlegm or mucus produced by mucous membranes.
*Medicinal plants that stimulate blood flow in the pelvic region and uterus are called emmenagogues.

Today's "let's see what's in the fridge" meal:
Parsnip cream soup and fried potato dumplings
Tumblr media
Recipe below
[[MORE]]
I used:
4 small chopped parsnips, thoroughly cleaned and with the peel still on
250 ml sour cream
500 ml veggie broth
500 g Kloßmasse
100 g fine bread crumbs
plant-based schmalz
salt, garlic powder, nutmeg, black pepper, tarragon, oregano, rosemary parsley
Hint:
If you can't buy Kloßmasse, which is a staple here in Thuringia, you'll need the starchiest yellowest potatoes you can find. Peel them, boil them, drain them and thoroughly mash them and let them cool down before continuing.
What you do:
Chop the parsnips into small cubes, melt a tablespoon of schmalz in a small pot and add the parsnip. Let them brown on low heat
Meanwhile, mix the Kloßmasse, breadcrumbs, garlic, half a teaspoon of salt and some rosemary in a large bowl and shape ping pong ball sized dumplings with your hands
Time to add the veggie broth to the parsnips, turn heat down to 1/3 if you haven't already, cover with lid and add more schmalz to a frying pan on medium heat. Once the schmalz covers all of the bottom of the pan, quickly place all the dumplings/as many as you can fit in one go and fry them, turning them around after a few minutes so that the sides get equally medium brown and crispy
Turn off the heat for the soup, pour in the sour cream and add nutmeg, pepper and more herbs to taste and take a magic wand to turn the parsnip cubes into a creamy homogenous mass
When the dumplings are thoroughly golden, pour some soup either on deep plates or into large bowls, top with dumplings and enjoy :D
Thoughts I had after finishing the cooking:
Some fried bacon would've been another nice topping too, if you eat bacon. Also, both the dumplings and the soup could be made including finely chopped onion. The dumplings could be filled with butter- or schmalzroasted croutons or a cheese cube. Another nice topping could be peanuts (go well with the sweetness of the parsnip) or chestnuts or even some elderberries.

golden milk for a golden day.
it has been a gloomy morning today in SWFL. not to mention the temperature has decreased by some 10-25 degrees the past couple of evenings. personally, i favor the warmer weather and humidity. for a lot of us, the colder weather and gloomy skies can take a toll in our confidence in ourselves and for the rest of the day. many of us will take one inconvenience and claim that the rest of the day will go just about the same. we set ourselves up for failure before we’ve given the rest of the day a chance to play out.
this morning i am sipping on my own golden milk latte recipe that helps warm up the fire in my solar plexus :
turmeric powder
cinnamon sticks
ginger
clove
fennel greek
rosemary
spruce pine needles
elderberries
ginseng root
astragalus root
licorice root
matcha leaves
marjoram leaves
after steeped, i added a teaspoon of honey and topped it off with almond milk.
from a recent perspective healing, i am beginning to see these inconvenient circumstances as opportunities for fluidity, letting go of control, and having gratitude for the experience. now at first that seems like a lot of hullabaloo, but it was not as easy as words can put it. before healing my inner chakra points i let the feelings trapped in those energy centers control my day, how i felt about it, and i let these challenging feelings debilitate me before i could move on from the feeling. some things that can get trapped in these centers are childhood trauma, trauma in self-worth and self-esteem, intrusive thoughts, sensual and sexual trauma, experience with abuse, people pleasing, and a lack in self-expression. when these shadows come up, i like to do things that match the energy on the other side of the spectrum. i’ll dedicate affirming songs to myself and sing them in a mirror, i’ll hold myself a little tighter to show myself that i’m supported, i’ll do breath work techniques and connect with the physical sensations of my body, and most importantly i move! shake, shimmy, jump, kick, stretch, and roll.
one small habit i have with a lot of intention behind it is putting turmeric in most of my everyday foods. including teas, smoothies, wellness shots, breakfasts, snacks, soups, rice, and most dinners. not only does it add great flavor but i use it to add a bit more healing into what i add to my own body.
the benefits of turmeric include :
1. Depression
2. Type 2 Diabetes
3. Viral Infections
4. Premenstrual Syndrome
5. High Cholesterol
6. Alzheimer's Disease
7. Arthritis
8. Cancer
9. Irritable Bowel Syndrome
10. Headaches
11. Acne
i do what i can to let myself, my mind, and my body know that there is plenty of space for me to be, to feel, and to release what is being held on to. i’ve given myself energy work for almost a year now, and in that time i’ve received a lot of help from others perspectives and healing energy. in that time i’ve been given the space to develop my own practice with what works for me, and it’s still ever-changing. healing becomes more easeful when we practice as well as when we are adding to that ease in the process.
be kind to yourself.

Goji Berries And Dried Elderberries
Tumblr media
Goji berries are one of the most popular superfoods today. Goji Berry have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, and they are rich in nutrients like protein, iron, and vitamin C. Goji berries are also high in carotenoids, which is what gives them their bright orange color. Carotenoids help protect the body from free radicals and other harmful agents. Elderberries are the fruit of the Elder tree. They have been used medicinally for centuries, and are also eaten as food. Traditionally, they were used to make wine and preserves. The berries can be cooked or dried whole, and then added to recipes. They can also be ground into a powder for use in baked goods like bread, muffins, and pancakes. Dried elderberries have an intense flavor that's similar to raisins or cranberries. Dried elderberries are a popular ingredient in many recipes. They are full of antioxidant properties and can be added to recipes for their flavor and health benefits. Elderberry syrup is a great way to get elderberries into your diet. It can be used as a base for other recipes or taken straight as a medicinal drink. Elderberry syrup is also a great way to preserve elderberries and make sure you have enough to last all winter long! Elderberry Syrup Kits are an easy way to make your own elderberry syrup at home.
