Greek seismologists are on alert after an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale rattled Central Greece at 8:38 on Thursday evening. The earthquake occurred in the same epicenter as the 6R a day earlier and caught seismologists by surprise as it was not an aftershock but a new earthquake. They speak of a rare phenomenon called “twin earthquakes.”

The epicenter of 5.9R was 16 km South-West of Elassona, shifted North-West than the 6R on March 3, 2021.

Seismologists like Gerasimos Papadopoulos speak of the possibility of the rare phenomenon of a “seismic couple” and warn that the danger is not over.

Also seismologist Costas Papazahos spoke of “twin earthquakes” and said that its magnitude may revised upwards. He pointed out that “we have not seen the activation of neighboring faults”, however if this happens “it will be seen in the coming days.”

Head of the Greek Earthquake Planning & Protection Agency, professor Efthymios Lekkas told media that the 5.9R “was not an aftershock but a new earthquake that came from the activation of a new branch of the fault line in the area, in the North-West.”

Συναγερμός έχει σημάνει στην Ελασσόνα καθώς έχουν εντοπιστεί τουλάχιστον δέκα κρούσματα κορονοϊού που σχετίζονται (άμεσα ή έμμεσα) με αθλητικές ακαδημίες.   Μάλιστα σύμφωνα με το σχετικό ρεπορτάζ της ΕΡΤ εκτιμάται ότι περίπου 150 άτομα έχουν μπει σε καραντίνα! Όπως μετέδωσε η δημόσια τηλεόραση έξι αθλήτριες του βόλεϊ σε γυμναστικό σύλλογο της Ελασσόνας, δύο συγγενείς της μιας εξ αυτών και δύο προπονητές -ο ένας της ομάδας μπάσκετ- διαγνώσθηκαν θετικοί σε Covid-19.     Σύμφωνα με τις οδηγίες του ΕΟΔΥ μπήκαν σε καραντίνα οι ομάδες βόλεϊ και μπάσκετ του Γυμναστικού Συλλόγου Ενωση Ελασσόνας αλλά και όλα τα παιδιά που έκαναν γυμναστική στις εγκαταστάσεις του συλλόγου ή είχαν γυμναστές τους προπονητές του συλλόγου που νοσούν. Παράλληλα όμως, έχει ανασταλεί και η λειτουργία 13 σχολικών τμημάτων που σχετίζονται με παιδιά που αθλούνται στον εν λόγω γυμναστικό σύλλογο. Επίσης, ο Δήμος Ελασσόνας απηύθυνε έκκληση προς όσους χρησιμοποίησαν το κλειστό γυμναστήριο της πόλης να παραμείνουν σε κατ’ οίκον περιοριοσμό.     «Από το Δήμο Ελασσόνας ανακοινώνεται ότι, σύμφωνα με τις οδηγίες του ΕΟΔΥ, όσοι προπονητές και αθλούμενοι χρησιμοποίησαν το χώρο του Κλειστού Γυμναστηρίου Ελασσόνας θα πρέπει να τεθούν σε κατ’ οίκον περιορισμό για 14 ημέρες από την ημέρα που εισήλθαν τελευταία φορά στο χώρο, λόγω του μεγάλου αριθμού κρουσμάτων που εντοπίστηκαν και συνδέονται με τις ομάδες βόλεϊ και μπάσκετ του ΓΣΕΕ.     Σύμφωνα με ενημέρωση από τον Γυμναστικό Σύλλογο Ένωση Ελασσόνας, αναστέλλεται η λειτουργία των τμημάτων μπάσκετ και βόλεϊ του αθλητικού σωματείου μέχρι νεωτέρας. Παρακαλούνται όσοι χρησιμοποίησαν το Κλειστό Γυμναστήριο την τελευταία εβδομάδα να παραμείνουν σε κατ’ οίκον περιορισμό, να παρακολουθούν την πορεία της υγείας τους για τυχόν εμφάνιση συ��πτωμάτων και να μη συμμετέχουν σε άλλες δραστηριότητες κατά το κρίσιμο διάστημα» ανέφερε η σχετική ανακοίνωση του Δήμου Ελασσόνας..     Παράλληλα, από τον Δήμο Ελασσόνας ανακοιώθηκε σχετικά με το κλείσιμο τμημάτων σχολείων δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης ότι «σύμφωνα με ενημέρωση των διευθυντών των σχολικών μονάδων, θα παραμείνουν κλειστά από αύριο Δευτέρα 19 Οκτωβρίου και έως την Παρασκευή 23 Οκτωβρίου τα παρακάτω τμήματα τάξεων του 1ου ΓΕΛ Ελασσόνας και του 1ου Γυμνασίου Ελασσόνας, λόγω εντοπισμού κρουσμάτων κορονοϊού στα τμήματα αυτά.     Στο Γενικό Λύκειο Ελασσόνας πέντε (5) τμήματα: Α2, Α3, Β3 Γενικής Παιδείας, Β’ Ανθρωπιστικών, Β’ Γαλλικών Στο 1ο Γυμνάσιο Ελασσόνας δύο (2) τμήματα: Γ2 και Γ3 Παρακαλούνται οι γονείς των μαθητών να κρατήσουν τα παιδιά σε κατ’ οίκον περιορισμό, να παρακολουθούν την πορεία της υγείας τους για τυχόν εμφάνιση συμπτωμάτων και να μην επιτρέπουν τη συμμετοχή τους σε άλλες δραστηριότητες κατά το κρίσιμο αυτό διάστημα».         Πληροφορίες από το ethnos Πληροφορίες από nassosblog

According to some reports, a Eurasian lynx has been spotted in the region of Elassona, Larisa. Some unofficial comments I saw claim that there might be more actually spotted close to Attica, during the last 4-5 years.

The lynx is one of Greece's endangered indigenous species and it hadn't been seen in the Greek territory for many years.

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake has struck central Greece, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.

The epicentre was 20km south of Elassona, a town almost 400km from the capital Athens, the Athens Geodynamic Institute said on Wednesday.

The quake was at a depth of 10km (6.2 miles), EMSC said.

In Larissa, which is near the epicentre, people ran from their homes into the streets in panic as the earthquake struck.

Larissa resident Dimitris, 46, told Al Jazeera: “I was driving and everything starting shaking. It was very scary.”

Giorgos, 45, who also lives in Larissa, said: “I thought the floor was going to collapse. It was going on and on, the trees were shaking like crazy. I didn’t know what to do.”

The situation in the town was calm shortly afterwards.

Greek seismologist Vassilis Karathanasis told state television that the tremor was felt across the country.

Νεκρός μέσα στο σπίτι που διέμενε στη Θεσσαλονίκη βρέθηκε ο 29χρονος Μιχάλης Κυριλλίδης, με καταγωγή από το Στεφανόβουνο Ελασσόνας.     Σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες ο θάνατος του οφείλεται σε εγκεφαλικό επεισόδιο.
