Extended credits for Museum at Tomorrow episode 5
Below the cut are all of the folks who I used (and asked to be credited) for recordings in Museum at Tomorrow episode 5- specifically, the "This is not for You" recordings.
(The list was too long for podcast episode descriptions)
These recordings were mixed into the soundscape of the show, heavily processed- so you may or may not be able to pick out your voice. Each unique recording is preserved as rhythem, timber, and shape within the episode.
Thank you for your work in creating the canvas of this piece.

For The Atlantic’s January/February 2024 issue, 24 contributors consider what Donald Trump could do if he were to return to the White House.
Just the summary page is a hilarious parade of catastrophizing. First, the editor's note:
• A WARNING, By Jeffrey Goldberg
America survived the first Trump term, though not without sustaining serious damage. A second term, if there is one, will be much worse.
Then the rest:
• THE DANGER AHEAD, By David Frum
If Donald Trump returns to the White House, he’d bring a better understanding of the system’s vulnerabilities, more willing enablers, and a more focused agenda of retaliation against his adversaries.
• TRUMP WILL ABANDON NATO, By Anne Applebaum
If reelected, he would end our commitment to the European alliance, reshaping the international order and hobbling American influence in the world.
• LOYALISTS, LAPDOGS, AND CRONIES, By McKay Coppins
In a second Trump term, there would be no adults in the room.
• THE SPECTER OF FAMILY SEPARATION, By Caitlin Dickerson
Donald Trump and his allies have promised to restore their draconian zero-tolerance immigration policy.
• HOW TRUMP GETS AWAY WITH IT, By Barton Gellman
If reelected, he could use the powers of the presidency to evade justice and punish his enemies.
• FOUR MORE YEARS OF UNCHECKED MISOGYNY, By Sophie Gilbert
In a second Trump term, women would once again be targets.
• THE CLIMATE CAN’T AFFORD ANOTHER TRUMP PRESIDENCY, By Zoë Schlanger
His approach to the environment: ignore it.
• IS JOURNALISM READY?, By George Packer
[Which rule is it that says that if a headline is a question, the answer is probably "no"?]
The press has repeatedly fallen into Donald Trump’s traps. A second term could render it irrelevant.
• TRUMP’S POLARIZATION OF SCIENCE IS BAD FOR EVERYONE, By Sarah Zhang
A reelected Donald Trump would continue to attack studies that stand in the way of his agenda—and to make support for scientific inquiry a tribal belief.
• CORRUPTION UNBOUND, By Franklin Foer
Donald Trump and his cronies left his first administration with a playbook for self-enrichment in a second term.
• WHY XI WANTS TRUMP TO WIN, By Michael Schuman
A second Trump term would allow China to cement its grip on the developing world.
• A MAGA JUDICIARY, By Adam Serwer
In a second term, Donald Trump would appoint more judges who don’t care about the law.
• THE PROUD BOYS LOVE A WINNER, By Juliette Kayyem
A second Trump term would validate the violent ideologies of far-right extremists—and allow them to escape legal jeopardy.
• A PLAN TO OUTLAW ABORTION EVERYWHERE, By Elaine Godfrey
Activists hope a Trump Justice Department would criminalize the procedure, with or without a federal ban.
• THE TRUTH WON’T MATTER, By Megan Garber
If reelected, Donald Trump will once again churn out absurdity and outrage with factory efficiency.
• DONALD TRUMP VS. AMERICAN HISTORY, By Clint Smith
He has promised to impose his harmful, erroneous claims on school curricula in a second term.
• A WAR ON BLUE AMERICA, By Ronald Brownstein
In a second term, Trump would punish the cities and states that don’t support him.
• TRUMP ISN’T BLUFFING, By David A. Graham
We’ve become inured to his rhetoric, but his message has grown darker.
• CIVIL RIGHTS UNDONE, By Vann R. Newkirk II
How Trump could unwind generations of progress
• TRUMP’S PLAN TO POLICE GENDER, By Spencer Kornhaber
His campaign is promising a more repressive and dangerous America.
• A MILITARY LOYAL TO TRUMP, By Tom Nichols
In 2020, the armed forces were a bulwark against Donald Trump’s antidemocratic designs. Changing that would be a high priority in a second term.
• THE LEFT CAN’T AFFORD TO GO MAD, By Helen Lewis
[This one looks like the closest to an even-handed approach, and stands out in comparison to the rest]
A second Trump term would require an opposition that focuses on his abuses of power—and seeks converts rather than hunting heretics.
• WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE AMERICAN PSYCHE IF TRUMP IS REELECTED?, By Jennifer Senior
Our bodies are not designed to handle chronic stress.
• TRUMP VOTERS ARE AMERICA TOO, By Mark Leibovich
(Note: even this one is totally negative)
If he wins a second term, perhaps we’ll finally dispense with the myth that “this is not who we are.”

The Bride Test by Helen Hoang
London Celebrities series by Lucy Parker
Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson
Meet Cute by Helen Hunting
Wicked Beautiful by J.T. Geissinger
Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamal
The Bride Test by Helen Hoang
Genres: Romance, Contemporary, New Adult
Synopsis:
Khai Diep has no feelings. Well, he feels irritation when people move his things or contentment when ledgers balance down to the penny, but not big, important emotions—like grief. And love. He thinks he’s defective. His family knows better—that his autism means he just processes emotions differently. When he steadfastly avoids relationships, his mother takes matters into her own hands and returns to Vietnam to find him the perfect bride. Knowing that many of her students won't make it to graduation before dropping out to marry and have children, Alys teaches them about Jane Austen and her other literary heroes and hopes to inspire the girls to dream of more.
When an invitation arrives to the biggest wedding their small town has seen in years, Mrs. Binat, certain that their luck is about to change, excitedly sets to work preparing her daughters to fish for rich, eligible bachelors. On the first night of the festivities, Alys's lovely older sister, Jena, catches the eye of Fahad "Bungles" Bingla, the wildly successful—and single—entrepreneur. But Bungles's friend Valentine Darsee is clearly unimpressed by the Binat family. Alys accidentally overhears his unflattering assessment of her and quickly dismisses him and his snobbish ways. As the days of lavish wedding parties unfold, the Binats wait breathlessly to see if Jena will land a proposal—and Alys begins to realize that Darsee's brusque manner may be hiding a very different man from the one she saw at first glance.

The psychological phenomenon that blinds Trump supporters to his racism

The psychological phenomenon that blinds Trump supporters to his racism
By Kathleen D. Vohs | Published July 18 at 10:57 AM ET | Washington Post | Posted July 21, 2019 |
President Trump’s tweet proposing that four Democratic congresswomen of color — three of them born in the United States, one a naturalized citizen — “go back” to the “totally broken and crime infested places from which they came” was textbook racism. Yet while some Republicans condemned the statement — Sen. Tim Scott (S.C.), who is black, lamented its “racially offensive language” — others flatly denied that there was a racial component to the salvo. A particularly contorted reaction came from Rep. Andy Harris (Md.), who said, “Clearly, it’s not a racist comment,” adding that the president “could have meant go back to the district they came from, to the neighborhood they came from.” But the president could hardly have made his meaning more clear: He said the four “originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe.”
“Well, I certainly do not think the president’s a racist,” said Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), who suggested that the tweet was justified by the representatives’ constant criticism “not only [of] the president but also Congress and our country.”
Fear of crossing a president who’s popular with the Republican base surely explains some of the convoluted rationalizations on offer. But a psychological phenomenon called cognitive dissonance may also shed light on some people’s unwillingness to acknowledge the self-evident racism in the tweets.
Cognitive dissonance, first described by the psychologist Leon Festinger in the late 1950s, occurs when conflict emerges between what people want to believe and the reality that threatens those beliefs. The human mind does not like such inconsistencies: They set off alarms that spur the mind to alter some beliefs to make the perceived reality fit with one’s preferred views.
In the case of Trump’s remarks — when absorbed by his supporters who do not consider themselves racist — those inconsistencies can be summarized in a sort of syllogism: (1) I do not support racists. (2) I do support President Trump. (3) President Trump has just made a racist remark. Those three facts simply don’t fit together comfortably in the mind.
Just as a hungry person will seek food to alleviate hunger, Festinger argued, people who experience mental discrepancies of this sort will work to put them in accord, to reduce the dissonance. And they will often go to extraordinary lengths to do so: Resolving cognitive dissonance often takes considerable mental gymnastics.
Supporters of Trump who experience cognitive dissonance over his remarks essentially have three psychological options to resolve it, altering in various ways the three beliefs that are in tension. One is to change the belief that they do not support racists. This response is unlikely, however, because it would require a massive overhaul of the view of the self, placing the person in a category he or she knows is morally dubious, not to mention socially vilified. Very rare is the person who will resolve psychological dissonance by saying, “Actually, I am a monster.”
Another option is to introduce new beliefs that bolster support for Trump. This does not address the conflicts among beliefs head-on but rather lessens the impact of the inflammatory statement by considering positive information about the president. One approach along these lines is to emphasize the awfulness of the policy positions and statements of the congresswomen Trump attacked, thereby casting the president as a defender of decency (and perhaps as a victim himself, not an aggressor). Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), for instance, described Democratic Reps. Rashida Tlaib (Mich.), Ayanna Pressley (Mass.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.) and Ilhan Omar (Minn.) as “a bunch of communists” who “hate Israel” and “hate our own country.” Relatedly, Marc Short, Vice President Pence’s chief of staff, played up Trump’s lack of racism in other contexts, noting that his transportation secretary, Elaine Chao, was born in Taiwan. As reasons for supporting the president grow — either his sterling qualities or the negative characteristics of his opponents — it becomes easier to overlook a single misstep.
A third route to resolving dissonance, in this specific case, is to flatly (and boldly) reject the consensus that telling someone to “go back” to their family’s country of origin is racist. Rep. Harris — with his revisionist argument that Trump wanted the women to go back to their districts — is probably the most striking example of this. But Fox News analyst Brit Hume may also belong in this category, with his hairsplitting statement that Trump’s comments were “nativist, xenophobic . . . and politically stupid” — but absolutely not racist, “a word so recklessly flung around these days that its actual meaning is being lost.” If Trump is just the latest in a long parade of people falsely accused of racism by liberals, that, too, makes it easier to take his side. (“Xenophobic” is not too far from “racist,” definitionally, but it does not carry nearly the same moral charge, so reframing the accusation that way may well ease psychological tension.)
Since the uproar, Trump has proclaimed that many people agree with his controversial statement and that indeed, “a lot of people love it.” But decades of behavioral research suggests that not all the people refraining from condemning the president support his attacks. Instead, they’re doing mental contortions to explain away the ugliness, to justify their continued support of him — and to maintain their positive views of themselves.

✏ + Three Adventurers, a game of "Never Have I Ever" quickly escalates
They were fortunate enough to be able to get a room for the night, and after inspecting the building for anything that could go bump in the night, gathering root beer to be safe, and a few snacks, the boys were able to have a proper sleep over that they felt otherwise denied from.
And with that, included slumber party games.
It was Guybrush’s suggestion to play a round of “Never Have I Ever”, figuring it would be both entertaining as well as a great way to get to know one another better.
Taking a bite from one of his snacks, Guybrush cleared his throat. “Alright, let’s see… never have I ever… hmm…” He tapped his chin in thought. “Oh! Never have I ever got a parrot drunk!”
Graham just blinked in confusion as Link stared up, trying to recall any events similar to what the pirate suggested. “Um… does getting a goron drunk count?” Link asked.
“Goron?” Graham stared before realizing. “Oh! Those rock-based creatures!”
“Yeah… no. Parrot.” Guybrush shrugged, “Really? Just me?”
“Drink up.” Link smirked as the pirate sighed and took a sip. “Graham, your turn.”
“Hmm… let’s see…” Graham shook his leg. “Never have I ever… been hit on… by… a mermaid.”
“Do zoras count?” Link asked.
“Yeah. They’re kinda like merfolks.” Guybrush figured.
Link and Guybrush stared at each other and took a sip.
“Whoa whoa whoa, BOTH of you!?” Graham stared dumbfounded, especially towards Guybrush. “Explain!”
“Remember my first mate? Winslow?” Guybrush began, “Well, his special someone is a merfolk and their kind tends to be… flirtatious. Anemone flirted with me a bit before they went steady with Winslow.”
Graham nodded and then looked at Link. “Yeah… um… I had a few zoras flirt… I didn’t really realize it until Princess Zelda kinda… kinda pointed it out to me.”
“Bluntly?” Graham raised a brow.
“Hmm… more like playful teasing, but yeah.” Link nodded, side-eyeing Guybrush who was snickering and saying ‘I know that feeling’. "Okay, so… my turn, yeah?”
Graham and Guybrush nodded.
“Okay… never have I ever dreamt of my crush.” Link said, staring at the two slowly beginning to blush.
“R-right for the kill, huh?” Guybrush chuckled. “But um… yeah.”
“Elaine?” Link smirked, enjoying seeing Guybrush turning further red and taking a sip.
“I think it’s cute that you still dream of her this far into your marriage.” Graham complimented, the red blush still on his cheeks.
“What about you?” Guybrush asked. “You’re blushing too. Who is it? Are they cute?”
“…K-kinda… yeah…” Graham mumbled.
“Ooooh, who is it?” Link smiled mischievously, causing Graham to choke slightly on his drink. Guybrush just watched the obvlious Hylian ask and the ever awkward archer and just smiled.
“I’ll give you three guess, Link.” Guybrush smiled. “Here’s a free hint: a kni–OOF!”
Link jumped back slightly as Graham tackled Guybrush.

It's finally here—the day we've all been waiting for ever since the “Moonlight”/ “La La Land” Best Picture fiasco: the Oscar noms have been announced. It's been a tight race, in which “Three Billboards” appears to have established itself as the frontrunner for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and maybe even Best Picture, while “The Shape of Water” has proven a nomination favorite this awards season but not necessarily the most likely to win. It leads this year's Oscars with 13 nominations.
In more exciting news, “Get Out” scored noms for Jordan Peele for Best Directing, Picture, and Writing, making him only the third director ever to receive all three noms on a debut feature. Daniel Kaluuya also scored a Best Actor nomination for the film.
Greta Gerwig, too, did well for herself, earning noms for Best Directing and Writing, and “Lady Bird” also has been nominated for Best Picture, though since Gerwig isn't a producer on the film she can't technically claim the same record as Peele.
“Call Me By Your Name” was nominated for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Timothée Chalamet. Also notable is that “A Fantastic Woman,” the Chilean film starring trans actress Daniela Vega, was nominated for Best Foreign Film.
The Oscars are hosted this year by Jimmy Kimmel and take place March 4 on ABC. Take a look at the full list below:

McConnell Demands Concessions for $2,000
LOS ANGELES (OnlineColumnist.com), T Dec. 21, 2020.--T-wo days before Christmas, House and Senate Democrats and Republicans reached a $900 billion stimulus relief deal, something long-awaited after  the $2.2 trillion March 27 HEROES Act providing $1,200 in direct payments individuals, $2,400 a couple, up to $4,000 a family, including billions in Payroll Protect for small, medium and large businesses, and $600 extended employment benefits.  This time around McConnell agreed to $600 payments, something 74-year-old President Donald Trump didn’t like.  Trump asked McConnell to pay $2,000 a citizen Dec. 22, throwing the Democrat Party for a loop.  House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) convened Democrats to pass a stand-alone bill Dec. 28 for $2,000, putting more pressure on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to match the amount.  So far, McConnell has done everything possible to avoid a vote.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, defied McConnell asking Senate Republicans for a stand-along vote on $2,000 in direct payments to deal with the extraordinary financial hardship from the Covid-19 lockdowns around the country.  With no end in sight to the virus, Graham thought, like Trump, that the $600 payments didn’t go far enough.  McConnell acted like the Grinch, calling the suggested $2,000 payment “socialism for rich people.”  McConnell gives new meaning to the “pot calling the kettle black.”  Mtich’s wife, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, received up to $1 million in PPP cash for her family’s shipping business.  Mitch’s “let them eat cake” attitude probably cost him his Majority Leader job when Georgia goes to the polls Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021 to pick Georgia’s next senators. Acting like the Grinch, Mitch probably sealed his fate.
Defying McConnell’s refusal to take up the $2,000 payment, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) called on the Senate to stage a stand-alone vote, bumping up the $600 to $2,000.  Graham thinks a stand-along measure to increase payments would pass the Republican controlled senate.  Democrats aren’t all that worried now that Georgia’s two Democrat challengers are up in the polls heading to the runoff Jan. 5, 2021.  Graham said he “is with the president on this,” separating himself from McConnell.  Graham didn’t see any vote happening until Jan. 3, if not after the Georgia runoff.  Graham said at least seven Republicans would vote to increase direct payments to $2,000, admitting he needs at least five more to make it happen.  McConnell wanted Democrats to agree to a repeal of Section 230 liability protecting for social networking companies, shielding them for third-party lawsuits.
McConnell was willing to entertain a vote on $2,000 if Democrats agreed to repeal social media companies liability protection from third party suits, not to mention legislation to establish a Blue Ribbon Commission to investigate fraud in the 2020 presidential election.  Calling $2,000 payments “socialism for rich Democrats,” Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) took great umbrage to McConnell’s remarks.  Bernie remembers all to well Mitch’s wife’s family receiving up to $1 million in PPP cash from the $2.2 trillion CARES’s Act.  Unlike McConnell, Bernie sees the suffering of ordinary Americans unable to work because of strict Covid-19 restrictions.  McConnell and other fiscal conservatives in the Senate, like Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ak.), worry about the exploding national debt, taking another $300 billion to cover the $2,000 direct payments, adds insult-to-injury.
McConnell knows that only one practicing “socialism for rich people,” is he and his wife Elaine, taking up to $1 million in PPP.  “Borrowing from our grandkids to do socialism for rich people is a terrible way to get help to families who actually need it,” McConnell said on the Senate floor. If it’s any consolation to Mitch, Federal Reserve Board Chairman Jay Powell wholeheartedly backs the raise from $600 to $2,000 to stimulate consumer spending.  McConnell doesn’t get the gravity of economic hardship to ordinary Americans, suffering under the weight of Covid-19 lockdowns, preventing ordinary people from earning a living.  Powell made clear he sees not adverse effect to the economy to a boost in direct payments, something disputed by former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers.  Summers said Dec. 25 that direct payments to consumers would “overheat” the economy.
McConnell wants Democrats to play ball to get their $2,000 payments, allowing a vote to repeal Section 230, the legal statute protecting social networking platforms from getting sued from third-party content.  McConnell also told Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) he wants to create a Blue Ribbon panel to investigate election fraud in the 2020 vote. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said McConnell’s two conditions are a deal breaker for Democrats.  Republicans want Section 230 repealed after Facebook and Google censored the New York Post story Oct. 14 to prevent any bad news about 78-year-old President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter.  Once Facebook and Google went into the censorship business, they forfeited their protection under Section 230.  When it comes to a Blue Ribbon Commission to investigate the 2020 vote, Democrat want no part of that.

Beyond Trump: Six things that could signal a return to political normalcy
Tumblr media
By Elaine Kamarck If you were to apply one word to the vice-presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence, it would be “normal.” While the debate did nothing to stop Biden’s momentum, it did harken back to an earlier era and made me wonder: Can we ever go back to normal? Or has Trump permanently changed our political life? First, let’s try and remember what normal looked like. Start with the debate. Neither candidate interrupted each other constantly and for extended periods of time as President Trump did in his first debate. Pence was somewhat guiltier, perhaps trying to please his boss. Each candidate had facts and figures at their fingertips and attacks on the other’s presidential candidate drawn from each one’s record. Or if they couldn’t do that, they simply ignored the question and talked about something else. Pence had to dance around the health care questions; Harris around whether she was in favor of increasing the number of Supreme Court justices. They each articulated the core tenets of their political parties. Harris kept returning to the importance of protecting people with pre-existing medical conditions with a powerful recitation that ended with “they’re coming for you.” Pence fell back on one of the oldest and most road-tested of all Republican themes: “They [Democrats] are going to raise your taxes.” The debate itself was normal and therefore somewhat boring, which is what politics used to be for most people. If we ever get beyond Trump what else would “normal” look like?
For starters, presidential candidates would be forced to release their tax returns, as almost all of them except for Trump have done voluntarily. So far about 20 states have considered making release of tax returns a condition of getting on the ballot. If one state passes this legislation the returns will be there for all to see and court cases are moving along in the same direction.
Most presidents, Democratic or Republican, would probably not be enamored with dictators like Vladimir Putin of Russia or Kim Jung-un of North Korea. Nor would they hide their discussions from the national security establishment as Trump has done, feeding worries that someone like Putin has “something” (perhaps financial) on the president. Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY) took Trump to task over his reluctance to call out Russia about reports that they paid bounties for killing American soldiers. Strongly supportive Republican senators such as Lindsay Graham (SC) have broken with Trump on Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Syria. Future presidents, including Republicans, would likely refrain from insulting our allies, instead using back channels and standard diplomacy to try and coax them into doing what we want. A normal president would not decide to pull American troops out of places around the world without consulting military commanders. They also would not continually praise the military in public and insult them in private.
When trying to undo a popular piece of legislation from his predecessor, a normal president would actually develop new legislation. Trump has spent his entire first term trying and then failing to undo Obamacare. When it was pointed out just how popular Obamacare is, especially the prohibitions that prohibit discrimination on the basis of pre-existing conditions, he put together a lengthy executive order that is mostly a defense of his health care record. (This issue is so important politically that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi attributed the 2018 Democratic takeover of the House to “Mr. Pre-existing Condition.”) But the section on pre-existing conditions in Trump’s executive order is thin gruel; there is no “how” in it. It is merely aspirational, lacking a plan for actually making it happen. Here’s the critical section.
Sec. 2. Policy. It has been and will continue to be the policy of the United States to give Americans seeking healthcare more choice, lower costs, and better care and to ensure that Americans with pre-existing conditions can obtain the insurance of their choice at affordable rates.
A normal president would not trash long-standing democratic norms, as Trump did when he refused to say that he’d accept the results of the election. Pence was forced to follow his leader with the following change-the-subject response: “When you talk about accepting the outcome of the election, I must tell you, Senator, your party has spent the last three and a half years trying to overturn the results of the last election. It’s amazing.”
A normal president would try empathy once in a while. Trump doesn’t do empathy—especially not for the over 200,000 people who have died of COVID-19. And beyond Trump it will be hard to find a president who never develops a pandemic plan. There have been many Republican Governors who ignored Trump’s lead on how to deal with COVID-19. In addition to Governor Charlie Baker of Massachusetts and Governor Larry Hogan of Maryland, both very blue states, Governor Mike DeWine of Ohio adopted a very careful COVID strategy and did not suffer politically.
Lying continuously about issues big and small would not be part of a normal presidency. In July the Washington Post reported that Trump had made more than 20,000 false or misleading statements to date. Following the presidential debate, Daniel Dale, the 35-year-old fact checker on CNN got out of breath trying to recount all the times Trump got things wrong. Nor would a normal president compare himself to Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill, two giants of history.
There is no doubt that we’ve never had a president like this one. The question is, will we have one in the future? Once Trump is no longer president will his enablers in the Republican party begin to act more responsibly? Will they continue to be so afraid of getting “primaried” that they resort to the demented hostility that has characterized the Trump era? Or will they turn into a bunch of mini-Trumps? Young Republicans like Tom Cotton and Josh Hawley are clearly waiting in the wings and they could turn out to be more competent versions of Trump minus some of the president’s bizarre behavior. Vice President Mike Pence did not deliver a strong enough blow to turn this presidential race around. But he did well enough to position himself for the future. He is a hardcore conservative without the rough edges and incompetence that has made even Republicans cringe at the endless confusion, contradictions and self-aggrandizement that comes from Trump. Pence simply is much more normal, and my bet is for a return to normal. In the short run it may be the Democrats, and in the long run it could be Pence. America in 2020 is a country craving normalcy. Restaurants, ball games, and movie theaters are all on the list—and politics too.

Trump calls on minority congresswomen to apologize after he said they should ‘go back’ to their countries

President Trump on Monday called on a group of minority, liberal congresswomen to “apologize” to the United States, Israel and him and accused them of “racist hatred” a day after he said in inflammatory tweets that they should “go back” to their countries.
“When will the Radical Left Congresswomen apologize to our Country, the people of Israel and even to the Office of the President, for the foul language they have used, and the terrible things they have said,” Trump said in new tweets Monday. “So many people are angry at them & their horrible & disgusting actions!”
He later criticized Democrats for coming to the defense of the congresswomen, who he claimed had shown “racist hatred” in their speech and are “very unpopular & unrepresentative.”
With his latest tweets, Trump dug in further on a line of attack that was widely condemned by Democrats as racist and employed a tactic he has used before: accusing his opponents of the same transgressions for which they have criticized him.
Trump’s tweets appeared to target four outspoken freshmen lawmakers who have been feuding with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.): Democratic Reps. Ayanna Pressley (Mass.), Rashida Tlaib (Mich.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.) and Ilhan Omar (Minn.).
Only one of them — Omar — was born outside the United States.

All four have called for Trump’s impeachment — Tlaib has done so using profane language — and have been highly critical of his administration, notably denouncing conditions at federal detention facilities near the U.S.-Mexico border.
Trump’s comments regarding Israel appeared to target Omar and Tlaib.
Earlier this year, Omar apologized after she was widely accused of anti-Semitic speech for suggesting that supporters of Israel’s government have an “allegiance to a foreign country.”
Tlaib, the daughter of Palestinian immigrants, has advocated what has been dubbed a “one-state solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Arguing that the Israeli government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu effectively opposes a two-state solution of neighboring Israeli and Palestinian states, she has supported the transformation of Israel into a single, jointly governed Arab-Jewish nation. But the idea has little support among either Israelis or Palestinians.

If Democrats want to unite around the foul language & racist hatred spewed from the mouths and actions of these very unpopular & unrepresentative Congresswomen, it will be interesting to see how it plays out. I can tell you that they have made Israel feel abandoned by the U.S.

Republicans remained largely silent Monday morning about Trump’s tweets targeting the minority lawmakers.
Ocasio-Cortez went on Twitter to denounce Trump shortly after his latest posts.
“It’s important to note that the President’s words yday, telling four American Congresswomen of color ‘go back to your own country,’ is hallmark language of white supremacists,” she wrote. “Trump feels comfortable leading the GOP into outright racism, and that should concern all Americans.”
Trump’s tweets on Sunday morning were sent before he headed to his golf club in Sterling, Va.
“So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run,” Trump tweeted.
“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came,” Trump added. “Then come back and show us how it is done.”
[Republicans are quiet as Trump urges minority congresswomen to leave the country]
Pressley was born in Cincinnati, Tlaib was born in Detroit, and Ocasio-Cortez was born in New York. Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia; her family fled the country amid civil war when she was a child, and she became a U.S. citizen as a teenager.
Pelosi subsequently described Trump’s tweets as racist and divisive.
“When @realDonaldTrump tells four American Congresswomen to go back to their countries, he reaffirms his plan to ‘Make America Great Again’ has always been about making America white again,” she said in a tweet. “Our diversity is our strength and our unity is our power.”
By Sunday evening, at least 90 House Democrats, plus Rep. Justin Amash (I-Mich.), had denounced Trump’s remarks, with more than half of them using the words “racist” or “racism” to describe his tweets.
The only Republican member of Congress to speak out against Trump on Sunday was Rep. Chip Roy (R-Tex.), who wrote on Twitter that “POTUS was wrong to say any American citizen, whether in Congress or not, has any ‘home’ besides the U.S.”
“But I just as strongly believe noncitizens who abuse our immigration laws should be sent home immediately, & Reps who refuse to defend America should be sent home” in the next election, he added.
A few other Republicans were critical of Trump’s tweets when asked about them on Monday.
Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.), speaking on the syndicated radio program “Michigan’s Big Show,” called Trump’s tweets “really uncalled for” and “very disappointing.”
“We don’t respond to everything that’s out there,” he said when asked about the relative silence from GOP lawmakers. “But I would imagine, I would know, that a good number of my Republican colleagues don’t appreciate the comments as well. And actually if you look at the facts . . . three of the four were born in this country, so it makes no sense.”
During a television appearance Monday morning, Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) counseled Trump to focus on policy differences with the congresswomen rather than on them personally.
“Aim higher. They are American citizens. They won an election. Take on their policies,” Graham said on Fox News’s “Fox & Friends.”
During the interview, Graham called the congresswomen’s ideas “anti-Semitic” and “socialist” and said their agenda is “disgusting.”
“We all know that AOC and this crowd are a bunch of communists,” Graham said, referring to Ocasio-Cortez. “They hate Israel. They hate our own country.”
Trump later tweeted selective quotes from Graham’s interview that did not include his advice to “aim higher.”

Trump also faced some criticism from Republicans beyond Capitol Hill.
In a statement, former Ohio governor John Kasich, a frequent Trump critic, called the president’s comments “deplorable and beneath the dignity of the office.”
“We all, including Republicans, need to speak out against these kinds of comments that do nothing more than divide us and create deep animosity — maybe even hatred,” he said.
Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) sought to highlight the silence of most Republicans on Capitol Hill.
“Is the Republican silence over President @realDonaldTrump’s racism agreement or embarrassment?” he said in a tweet late Monday morning.
On Sunday night, Trump tweeted that it was “sad” to see Democrats “sticking up for people who speak so badly of our Country and who, in addition, hate Israel with a true and unbridled passion.”
He returned to that argument Monday morning.
“If Democrats want to unite around the foul language & racist hatred spewed from the mouths and actions of these very unpopular & unrepresentative Congresswomen, it will be interesting to see how it plays out,” Trump wrote. “I can tell you that they have made Israel feel abandoned by the U.S.”
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday morning, Marc Short, chief of staff to Vice President Pence, said: “I don’t think the president’s intent in any way is racist. . . . This is not a universal statement that he is making.”
Asked about the controversy during an earlier appearance on the Fox Business Channel, Short mentioned a recent naturalization ceremony at which Pence presided and that was attended by Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, who is Asian American.
“So when people write the president has racist motives here, look at the reality of who is actually serving in Donald Trump’s Cabinet,” Short said. “He is making a point about a great frustration a lot of people feel that, I think it’s hard to find anything Ilhan Omar has actually said since elected to Congress that has been positive about the United States of America.”
