𝘌𝘭 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘧𝘰 - 𝘊𝘦𝘤𝘦 𝘉𝘦𝘭𝘭 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
✨This one was not a pleasure read as I had to read it for a Literature Teaching class and it is the first graphic novel I have ever really read.
It is a sweet story about a hard of hearing girl trying to find her place in the world with friends and school while learning to live with her hearing aid.
✨ What I liked most was how fast I could finish this book and not realizing that I was done with it in about an hour. In comparison to the other novel I had to read for this class this was an enjoyment.

It’s January Wrap Up time! - Sorry for my extremely inconsistent posts I just finished midterms and the semester just ended. What books did you read in January? I actually stuck to my January tbr except for Turtles All the Way Down which I had to dnf because it was extremely triggering for my anxiety. - - My wrap up: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sadie By Courtney Summers: I reviewed this in my last post so for a full review you can check there but in summary it was fantastic and I would 100% recommend it. Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Slayer by Kiersten White: this book was really good! I actually went in with super low expectations because I now nothing about Buffy the Vampire Slayer but I really enjoyed this book! If you haven’t watched Buffy you’ll be a little bit confused in the beginning besides that you can definitely read this whether you have or haven’t swatches the show. Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ El Deafo by Cece Bell: this is such a cute graphic novel! I loved the cute art style in this book. The book follows Cece’s childhood. The Power of Hearing
El Deafo is a graphic novel about a young girl named Cece and how she copes with a sudden illness causing her to lose her hearing. Throughout the novel, Cece faces numerous struggles; including problems with the technology used to help her hear, making quality friends, and getting the attention of her crush, Mike Miller. Cece uses an alter-ego of a superhero, El Deafo, in order for her to combat her problems. I believe her phonic ear and other hearing devices play the role as symbols and super powers to help Cece face the problems in her daily life.
In order to hear and be able to participate in school, it is necessary for Cece to use her Phonic Ear. At first, Cece is hesitant about wanting to wear her Phonic Ear to school because it is very large and heavy. She is also very embarrassed about having to give her teacher, Mrs. Lufton, the microphone portion of the device in front of her class. When she begins to use it, Cece is amazed about how clearly she can hear. She is even able to hear more than her peers because the microphone Mrs. Lufton wears allows Cece to eavesdrop on the conversations her teacher is having outside the classroom.
When her classmates discover Cece’s ability; they are very intrigued and one classmate even admits she “wishes she had a hearing aid also”. The class decides they want to prank their teacher and Cece is honored to help by using her “superpower”. One classmate in particular who had an interest towards Cece’s ability is her crush, Mike Miller. One day, Mike and Cece go on a “date” downtown and on this date Mike walks away from Cece to see how far she can hear him while he is speaking to her through the microphone.
Both of these experiences help Cece feel accepted and important to her peers. The main struggle Cece faces during the novel is finding a quality friend who is accepting of her disability and does not pity her or give her special treatment because of it. Her classmate’s discovery of her “superpower” of being able to hear Mrs. Lufton when she is not in the classroom allows her to be accepted rather than ridiculed or given sympathy. This shows how she uses her disability as a superpower in order to overcome the obstacles it may have created for her.

Book Review: El Deafo
Tumblr media
El Deafo, based on the true experiences of Cece Bell growing up being hearing impaired, follows the child-bunny version of Cece as she deals with the everyday struggles of life, such as losing friends, falling in love, being embarrassed, and being bullied, all while continually feeling ostracised by her peers for being hearing-impaired.  She wears the “Phonic Ear” to be able to hear better and imagines herself as the super-powered “El Deafo” to find solace during her loneliness.           Throughout this novel, we see our main character Cece (or CE-CE! as one of her friends yells at her) dealing with the hardships of growing up.  She finds friends who aren’t really friendly, loses friends that she loves, deals with the loss of her hearing, falls in love with a boy, and ultimately deals with the power of loneliness as it relates to her disability.  Cece feels like an outsider in every way, and finds it hard to even joke with the other children. Students who have a hearing disability could read this and feel comfort, and students who don’t have a hearing disability could read this and find comfort as well, along with ways to deal with people who have disabilities.  I smiled (and cried) through every page of this novel, and I think it’s an amazing book for an ever-expanding sub-genre.           El Deafo has a Lexile score of 420L, and at 248 pages of graphic novel, it’s a fairly quick read.  However, as a 26-year old man, I found myself hysterically laughing at some parts, emotionally torn at others, and otherwise overjoyed during my reading of this book.  It has a few large words that younger children might find confusing, and a lot of implied humour that would exceed their level of understanding; that being said, I think 3rd-12th graders could all and find redeeming qualities in this book, and find themselves represented amongst its pages.           Other books I would recommend after El Deafo are:
- Blankets by Craig Thompson
- This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki
- Stitches: A Memoir by David Small
Each of these is a graphic novel that deals with the pains of growing older, being alone, and ultimately finding ways to be happy in this life.           In terms of other media, I think the films Mary & Max and My Life as a Zucchini would be excellent companions to this novel.  Mary & Max deals with a child befriending a man with Asperger’s syndrome, and My Life as a Zucchini deals with a child who found his mother dead and goes to live with other foster children.
