There are three things I'm loving so much in this photo: 1) The illuminated novel (Harry Potter fans will love) by Adam Gidwitz and Hatem Aly , 2) Crystals of all kinds but mostly large pieces like this quartz orb, 3) The #soulspaceoracle deck by Jen Berlingo They make my day magical! #magic #middlegrade #newberryhonor #kidlit #healing #crystals

Text
Silence Speaks Volumes
El Deafo is a graphic novel written by Cece Bell, published in 2014, that shares the story of a young girl who is deaf. It takes us on an intimate journey of Cece’s childhood through stories and specific instances of her life that have contributed to her lifestyle as a deaf individual. Since El Deafo is a graphic novel, the illustrations that are included carry extra importance. The speech bubbles that slowly fade away to nothing as Cece loses her hearing are some of the most significant and thought-provoking illustrations.
First used on page six, these speech bubbles mark the exact moment when Cece completely loses her hearing in the hospital. Before the speech bubbles become completely blank though, they begin to fade from dark black to a lighter and lighter grey until the text finally disappears. This illustration choice helps to show readers that Cece did not lose her hearing all at once, but that it gradually diminished over time. Without the inclusion of these speech bubbles, readers would be unaware that Cece was gradually losing her hearing; the realization would not occur for readers until it occurred for Cece as well. She does not realize she has lost her hearing until page twelve.
The blank speech bubbles are used on page 59 as well to help readers be aware that Cece is ignoring Laura. Without these blank speech bubbles, readers would be oblivious to the fact that Laura was even trying to talk to Cece. On pages 108 and 109, the batteries run down in her phonic ear while she is at the sign language class. When this happens, she becomes even more reluctant to learn sign language when her mother suggests it. Readers can see the panic that Cece experiences when her phonic ear stops working. Finally, Cece turns her hearing aids off at her sleepover on page 127. In this instance, readers can see that Cece feels like having hearing aids is to her advantage. She can completely tune out the world around her and get some much-needed rest.
Because these blank speech bubbles are not frequently utilized throughout the text and illustrations of El Deafo, they hold more meaning. Each time that these blank speech bubbles are included, Cece realizes the importance of her hearing aids and the power that they actually give her. Without her hearing aids, she cannot understand those around her, but when she turns her hearing aids off she feels relieved and almighty because she can control the environment around her.
I also see much significance in the fact that Cece’s thought bubbles are never blank. This communicates to readers that Cece is still always thinking even though she may not be able to hear. Her thought bubbles help to give readers insights to her information processing skills, her personality, and provide much of the information that helps to move the plot along. The anecdotes that Cece shares with us become a much more intimate story for readers to follow because of the thought bubbles, blank speech bubbles, and illustrations used.

Rascal by Sterling North. This book was chosen for the #endtablebookreview because my good friend Steve @because_coffee supposedly has only finished one book in his life and this my friends is that book. The book was pretty ok. Def a good book for young readers and follows a young boy and his pet Raccoon in the year 1918. It has some endearing moments and ends pretty abruptly much like this review. #review #bookreview #reading #fiction #literaryfiction #nonfiction #literature #raccoon #rascal #sterlingnorth #books #sterlingnorth #pet #adventure #friends #family #amreading #newberryhonor

Rascal by Sterling North. This last week I finished a few books. This one I read because my good friend @because_coffee said he had only really read one book in his life all the way through. This was that book and I needed to see what could drive a person so adamant on not reading to actually read this book. It was pretty good. Just a story about a young boy in 1918 and his pet raccoon. It ends pretty abruptly. Kinda like this review. #endtablebookreview #bookreview #reading #fiction #nonfiction #literature #raccoon #rascal #sterlingnorth #pet #adventure #friends #family #amreading #coins #newberryhonor #booklife
