Hello PS! How are you? I just got done with watching Ipkknd and lmao it feels like I'm done with life, I get this hollow feeling lol that you get when you watch something great and have nothing else to watch. I was wondering if you have any other Indian drama recs?

Hahahah omg I know the feeling well. Congratulations on completing the serial! I honestly don't think anything else truly lives up to IPKKND. It occupies a unique place. I will welcome you to the #EndlesslyRewatchingIPKKNDClub in anticipation of you simply starting again :)

However, here are some thing to consider if you’re looking for new shows:

If you like the vibe of IPKKND in terms of an anti-hero and an every-gal, then other 4Lions shows may be of interest. They’re all based on the same template and many IPK fans also liked Ishqbaaz for example, or Qubool Hai or Geet. Other shows that capture this vibe are Rangrasiya (starring Sanaya Irani), Mann Ki Awaaz Pratigya, Ek Duje Ke Vaaste, and Jodha Akbar.

However, none of these shows are as tightly plotted or as enjoyable (in my view) as IPKKND. Qubool Hai in particular gets lost in its subplots and side characters, Jodha Akbar has like four amazing tracks and the rest is mediocre at best, and Rangrasiya felt like an off-brand IPKKND. I watched a lot of Pratigya but I wouldn’t describe it as satisfying. Ek Duje Ke Vaaste captured my interest for ages, I even wrote fanfiction for it. 

Qubool Hai season 2 (with Sanam and Aahil) is at times a shot-for-shot retelling of IPKKND but it didn’t hold up to a rewatch last year. My advice is to just watch Episode 426 to see our favourite kidnapper Rocky up to shenanigans as usual and skip to Episode 429 for a song sequence that still haunts my dreams.

I reckon web series are where it's at. Check out Tanhaiyan (starring Barun Sobti and Surbhi Jyoti), The Married Woman, and maybe ASUR (starring Barun Sobti!). Oh, and The Great Indian Dysfunctional Family. 

I’m currently watching Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai (from the time leap that stars Harshad Chopra). It’s terrible, it’s literally like the production team is conducting a “what not to do” experiment. The leads are cute though *shrug* And someone stopped by the other day and recommended Anupamaa.

I looooooove O Jaana. It just makes me feel all the feelz, happy when in a good scene, weepy in a sad scene. I prefer the female happy version, and the male sad version. Just ugh. Right to the heart, whenever it plays. 💘💘💘😭😭😭

Bol Na Dil Se - Tumhari Paakhi: Just a gorgeous song altogether. It captures Paakhi’s sunshiney personality so well! Makes me so happy whenever I hear it. 😊😊😊

Ek Duje Ke Vaaste Title Track: Beautiful lyrics, excellent rendition by Jubin Nautiyal. Fits the angst of Shravan/Sumo and their relationship really well. 💖💖💖

The instrumental theme that played when Khushi thinks Arnav’s disappeared and she’s leaving him a voicemail asking him to come back, but discovers him standing behind her.

In general I preferred IPKKND’s instrumental themes better than the ones with lyrics. 

Jiya Re - Dahleez: Again, beautifully sung by Jubin. Swadheenta and Adarsh were a pretty non-dramatic couple compared to all the others. The song suits that caaaalm and peaceful vibe they exude. 💞💞💞

My blackhole of a brain isn’t allowing me to remember any others; but also, the trend of original theme songs is largely newer (started/popularized by IPKKND, I think?) Before, shows just used to have Bollywood songs as the theme for the couple (especially in Ekta Kapoor shows. Which was pretty much all I watched.) 

This ask sent me into a spiral on Youtube, where I watched the title tracks of almost every show since the 90s. So the following aren’t strictly “theme songs”, but title tracks that I loved back in the day (in no particular order):

Tributes to Hindi cinema's ingenious wordsmith Anand Bakshi, on his 89th birth anniversary today. Anand Bakshi was a prolific lyricist of the Hindi film industry. In an exemplary career spanning over forty-five years, Bakshi penned over 4000 songs in over 650 movies, received 40 Filmfare Award nominations, and won four of them for top movies like Apnapan(1977), Ek Duje ke Liye (1981), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge (1995) and Taal (1999). Born in 1930 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, Bakshi nursed a childhood dream of becoming a playback singer. In the face of his family's opposition to his plans to move to Mumbai and join the film industry, he ran away from home and joined the Navy. Later, he joined the army and subsequently worked as a telephone operator and made several visits to Mumbai. During one such visit he met the actor Bhagwan who gave Bakshi his first opportunity to write four songs for Brij Mohan's Bhala Admi (1958). But it wasn’t until Mehndi Lagi Mere Haath (1962), with music composed by Kalyanji-Anandji, that he began to get noticed. It was in the Mala Sinha-Raaj Kumar starrer, 'Phool Bane Angare' (1963) that Bakshi made his first real impact in the company of composers Kalyanji-Anandji with such instantly hummed numbers as "Chaand aahen bharega phool dil dhaam lege" (Mukesh) and "Watan pe jo fida hoga amar woh naujawaan hoga" (Mohammed Rafi). Anand Bakshi wrote songs that at once captured the imagination of the listeners. Anand Bakshi the lyricist had no rival when it came to a perfect blend of quality and quantity for years together. With more than 4000 songs during his 45-year career, Anand Bakshi will remain one of the most popular lyricists of all times. Bakshi remained eternally young at heart even while mellowing graciously into the new millennium. Where else will we find a lyricist who will write a song as inspiringly optimistic as "Gaadi bula rahi hai" (Dost), as heart-rending as "Chitthi aaye hai" (Naam) or as epitomisingly romantic as "Ek tha gul aur ek thi bulbul" (Jab Jab Phool Khile)? At the age of 72, Bakshi died on 30 March 2002 in Mumbai, following prolonged illness.
