Yukiya of Taruhi
I think it would have been innovative and interesting if the story had ended with the main character, Yukiya, leaving while cursing Nazukihiko, ending with “The End” (laughs). However, the anime version of Yukiya is relatively kind and has a somewhat gentle demeanor, so that kind of ending might not align with his character. In the original work, Yukiya is a character who, for better or worse, remains unchanged while everyone else grows, experiences hardships, or undergoes some kind of transformation. I aim to depict both his good and bad sides. Even if it seems like he is changing, it's only because the people around him are changing, giving that impression. As depicted in the second episode of the anime, he is the kind of person who lets himself get hit to trap the other person and then sticks his tongue out later. I believe he continues to do the same things. His position and the people around him make him appear like a kid who is trying hard despite being manipulated by Nazukihiko, but if you look at his character alone, he has a pretty bad personality and carries a lot of issues.

Straight from the author’s depiction of one of her main characters.

VA - Electronic Kumoko - Cloudchild - 22- track electronica comp with Carlos Niño, Rob Mazurek, Jamael Dean, Takashi Kokubo, etc.
The world of KUMOKO goes electronic. ELECTRONIC KUMOKO cloudchild is Vol. 2 of the KUMOKO compilation series that was first released in 2016 and is a compilation of 22 songs inspired by KUMOKO, an imaginary spirit of the clouds created by SunEye (Akiko & Hashim Bharoocha). Born from the eye of the clouds, KUMOKO is a child and artist of the sky. She spontaneously creates art using clouds, paints the sky in vibrant colors, and uses thunder to express her fury. 21 artists from the US and Japan interpreted the story of KUMOKO into electronic soundscapes that range from ambient, minimal, electro-funk, dance, experimental, and environmental music. The compilation features IMA (4-year-old artist from Brooklyn), Mioko Yamaguchi & Hideki Matsutake (Yamaguchi is known for her techno-pop albums from the 80s and Matsutake is known for his work with YMO), Ray Barbee (pro skater and musician), Sam Prekop (from The Sea and Cake), Jeremiah Chiu(graphic artist and musician), Carlos Niño (Carlos Niño and Friends), TENTENKO (J-pop idol turned experimental electronic artist), techno artist John Tejada, West Coast funk artists BOY DUDE and XL Middleton, YOKUBARI (Hisham Akira Bharoocha from Soft Circle), Rob Mazurek (Exploding Star Orchestra), Brin & Matthewdavid (Leaving Records), Jira >< (aka jazz pianist Jamael Dean), lucky dragons (visual and sound artist duo), r beny(Northern California ambient artist), Yumi Iwaki & Eishi Segawa(film & electronic composers), Money Mark (Beastie Boys, Jack Johnson), Takashi Kokubo (legendary environmental music composer from Japan), Turn on the Sunlight(Jesse Peterson), and SunEye.

A game that originally began development as a sequel to the original Street Fighter, the first Final Fight game had to switch its genre from the original fighting game idea to a beat ’em up and eventually change its Street Fighter 2 moniker following the success of Double Dragon, more importantly Double Dragon II: The Revenge
With various ports of the first installment in almost every video game platform out there, its sequels and its characters making appearances in other Capcom titles, It’s plain to see why the Final Fight series is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to talking about memorable games in Capcom’s legacy.
Although no new final fight games seem to be in the near future, and the series will be celebrating it’s 30th anniversary next year, what better way to celebrate one of my favorite beat ‘em up by sharing the Latest Retro VGM Revival Hour Episode focusing entirely on the amazing music of the final fight series.

The Yatagarasu OST is here. I am holding it in my hands. Though I’ve listened to it countless times (even created my own Yatagarasu-inspired playlist while waiting for the OST; if you are interested, you can find it here) before I got my physical copy today, it is so fulfilling to listen to the CD in big speakers.
Anyway, this is so amusing, Yukiya’s image(s) smacked between the princesses’ just goes to show he’s also a contender. I love it.
There’s also a message from Chisato Abe:
For the first time it was decided to be animated, “What do you expect from anime?" I was asked, and as a particularly strong request, I said, "I want you to do your best with the music." In the past, I had an experience in the animation of my favourite work, and I couldn't enjoy it at all because the sound didn't match my image even though the picture was beautiful. I was worried that I would be sad if the same thing happened to the original author's anime, but this ended up being unfounded.
This is because I witnessed that sound directors, voice actors, and other sound-related professionals are doing their work perfectly as professionals at the after-play site I visited. And during the tour, it was none other than Eishi Segawa who was sitting next to me. He answered amateur questions very kindly, and the fact that this anime is a full film scoring, that Mr. Segawa himself is present at the afterplay every time, and that he makes music while having a thorough meeting with the people at the scene. I was taught and so on. At that time, I was sure that this would definitely be a good thing.
The results are as you heard.
Mr. Segawa, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me wonderful music. Thank you very much!
The words from the Director Yoshiaki Kyougoku:
I can't forget the time when I received a demo song from Mr. Segawa that evoked the world of Yamauchi.
Music that is heavy and strict, yet colourful. The long history of the mountain and the drama of the eight people living there seemed to appear in front of me, and I was sure that this would be a great play.
In addition, the film scoring that is composed according to the video is a feature of this work.
It is a method that is quite difficult to achieve in a TV series without time, but Mr. Segawa showed up at the production site surprisingly vigourously and made all the songs while communicating. By composing while considering the balance of all elements such as pictures, dialogue, and sound effects, it has become an ideal theatre partner of "directing drama with music".
Especially in the scene of choosing episodes 12 and 13, it feels like a first book. Despite the lack of big movement, I can't take my eyes off the tremendous tension. This would not have been possible without Mr. Segawa's music.
Every time a new song arrived, I thought, "I want to take more videos and listen to this music carefully," so I'm really happy that you released a soundtrack.
Please feel the rich worldview of Yamauchi created by music.
And from the composer himself, Eishi Segawa:
Is animation directing a technique that moves intermittent fragments of still images in the mind of the viewer? Then, the theatre partner should also be more likely to play a role in assisting the production in all scenes. If you actually write music along the scene, you should be able to participate in the strangeness of careful superposition more than ever before, and then you can decipher the contrast with adjacent scenes, and the composer will also explore the moment when the absence of music complements the dialogue. You can do it. In addition, it was certain that if you abandon the music and stick to sound design, you should be able to express the loneliness, which is very important to this story, more boldly.
These thoughts were the intuitiveness I gained when I read the original work, and in the interaction with the directors in charge of each episode, I realised that it was inevitable to choose.
As expected the tracks “The Golden Raven” and “Yukiya of Taruhi” have notes that are similar. It is like an overlapping theme. Both “Sumio’s theme” and “Rokon’s theme” give you an impression of danger, threatening, grandiose. Although Rokon’s theme lasts 7 minutes. The longest track in the OST. BUT my most favourite of all is “Hope.”
This piece is playing when Yukiya told Wakamiya:
“You leave yourself wide open.”
Reminds me of my favourite Arvo Pärt composition, “Summa.” That kind of thought-provoking, emotionally satisfying piece of music that pierces you. Waxing poetry here I know. Apologies. I got carried away. Anyway, I love the soundtrack. So listen to it if you can in any platform that you can, you won’t regret it.

For this project, the decision to compose music for each episode was made during a meeting with the anime production team in November 2022. I had long hoped for an opportunity to follow the model of American TV series, where the composer takes the lead in spotting (deciding where to place the music) and progresses with composition through weekly discussions with directors and producers. At the same time, having only been involved in a handful of anime projects, I had a strong interest in the overall process of anime production.
I began composing based on the script long before the actual voice recording started, that is, before the animation began to move. These were short pieces, less than two minutes each, and I wrote about 40 of them. I had the production team listen to them, received feedback, and gradually thought I was grasping the overall world view. However, after all the production was completed, only two of those pieces were actually used in the main story.
As many viewers may know, in TV anime productions, the director in charge varies for each episode. In this work, there are eight skilled directors, each responsible for 2 or 3 episodes, making up a total of 20 episodes. What I found interesting throughout the entire process was that the nuances of each director's direction were different, and accordingly, my reactions to the music also changed.
This understanding became a new experience and greatly assisted in composing the music. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the staff once again. (Music: Eishi Segawa)
So surprised that they are releasing the second volume in four months time. When the first soundtrack was announced, Mr. Segawa was not sure if there would be a second volume. And now it is going to be a reality come December 25.
The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master: the Golden Raven OST
The second batch of songs from the anime is going to be released on December 25th.
It includes music from episodes 14 to 20, a total of 34 tracks.
Here's the cover art:

The music in “Yatagarasu”
This particular piece is playing when Yukiya gets to witness Wakamiya’s power as the latter shoots his arrows. What follows is a beautiful movement coming from the olive green branches of sprouting wisteria flowers under the moonlight. Yukiya is mesmerised, who cannot believe what he has seen and is finding out another side of his master that is completely unknown to him. Yukiya thought Wakamiya was spending his time in frivolous matters when he was not at the Sunrise Palace. On that day he realised he might have mistaken. Most of all, his memories started to resurface though not fully. (Though, I admit that I find mangaka Natsumi Matsuzaki’s interpretation of Yukiya’s déjà vu more arresting to the senses as she showed us what happened the first time Yukiya and Wakamiya met.)
It is the strength of the orchestra melding together with the crispness of the arrow’s tip hitting a glasslike surface of the tears into the void as if one hits a mirror and hearing it crystal clear. The violin, woodwind instruments, the soft and subtle choir in the background that could symbolise the wisteria, these fantastical natural beauties, blooming with all their might at nighttime in a lightning speed (which my gifs cannot justify the elegance of the scenes).
A pity that the album only contains music pieces from episodes 1 to 13. On the 16th episode where the excerpt above is playing, Mr. Segawa said, when asked about the music for the second arc:
I’d love to say yes, but it’s a bit more complicated than that. I’m writing new cues for each episode to perfectly match the direction of every scene, and I’m still working on it. Unfortunately, I don’t have control over when the OST gets released, so we decided to include music from episodes 1 to 13 in the OST. ( x )
Apart from the aforementioned track above, another example that has fallen off the radar from many viewers is the clever interplaying of two themes at the tail end of Episode 13 when we were about to enter the second arc.
Scene 1: Yukiya, Sumio and Wakamiya at the Palace’s stable (background music: gentle, peaceful guitar notes signalling Yukiya’s return to his province, to normalcy, who is honest with Wakamiya about the reason he does not want to continue to be his aide anymore. Nazukihiko, on the other hand, even stops Sumio from interrupting bc he wants to know Yukiya’s feelings)
Scene 2: Struggling to escape, a young woman desperately crying her heart out face to face with the horror as the monster poised to devour her whole (background effects: a menacing sound coming from the pits of a cave and the dreadful pair of heavy-set feet stomping that belonged to a dangerous creature, it sounds like a waterphone playing or the risset horror sound effect from a violin)
Soundtracks can be either hit or miss. Last year, Yuma Yamaguchi’s “Undead Girl Murder Farce” soundtrack was my album of the year. So far, Eishi Segawa’s compositions, which add colour and nuance to the scenes tremendously, are solid and very engaging. Time will tell if the album will be a personal fave this year.
Preorders are now open via Amazon Japan. That is if you are interested. I can’t wait to listen to it in its entirety!
