Pretty rare for cartoons nowadays to use a live orchestra to perform the show’s music. We appreciate sample libraries from Kontakt, Cinesamples, Eastwest, Spirfire, even ProjectSAM for their Symphobia libraries.

But having an orchestra full of 40 to 60 talented players either by a group (Seattle Philharmonic, London Symphony (can’t beat them if you are a Star Wars fan), Orlando Philharmonic), or by Hollywood freelance/session musicians, can make TV music sound awesome.

We have Mark Isham who did Once Upon a Time, Walter Murphy for Family Guy and American Dad, even Paul Rudish’s Mickey Mouse shorts have a live orchestra thanks to Christopher Willis. Alf Clausen is the one guy we should thank for bringing live orchestral music into animation.

To paraphrase all this, live orchestras in animation should get more recognition. We can agree that software and virtual instrument samples are cost efficient but live orchestras are the players that started at all going back to Golden Age of TV and Animation.

I wish Big City Greens had the budget to get a live orchestra to do the musical score like Harvey Beaks did. Ego Plum and the Seattle Philharmonic always nailed each episode of HB. Why not BCG?

I would LOVE to get an orchestra for BCG. Curious to see if I’m alone in this. Let’s try to DRUM up some excitement! Like/reblog if you agree!!

harvey beaks crew: you guys managed to put an irving berlin song into an episode. A+, fantastic. i loved how the music also had the melody of the song in a very subtle way in the beginning! it really matched the feel of the episode and the series as a whole so far, too. looking forward to more!

Coming this summer!

This year I started writing music for SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS at Nickelodeon. The soundtrack to Spongebob may be among my favorite among modern cartoons in the last decade so I didn’t take this task lightly. On top of all this, my first assignment was no easy feat: I had to recreate Raymond Scott’s iconic POWERHOUSE, but in a style that would fit the beautiful pre-existing musical landscape of the show. The song Powerhouse was made famous by Carl Stalling in his musical arrangements for Looney Tunes in the 1930-50′s and in my opinion is the most iconic piece of cartoon music in history. Here is my full re-imagining of Raymond Scott's POWERHOUSE from the Season 12 episode "Broken Alarm." I performed all the slide guitar parts, piano, percussion, and bass, and left the rhythm acoustic guitars and mid solo to my friend and orchestrator Steve Bartek of the band Oingo Boingo.
