I know that fandom often clowns on this statement
Tumblr media
from Law (about needing to take down monsters to learn about history), taking it as proof that he's somehow not fighting for freedom or that
Tumblr media
freedom of expression is not something important that has been sanctified ratified in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers. (Article 19)
But that it is instead some nerdish pastime that no other character in One Piece or the real world is invested in (WG or otherwise) for obvious reasons of power, politics and freedom/repression.
But there are governments and organisations that regularly suppress this kind of expression (in One Piece and the real world--no surprise):
Tumblr media
There are governments and organisations that fear the pursuit of knowledge:
Partial SBS: Volume 86: Pedro led the Nox expedition party who were chased by the government for searching for poneglyphs, thus they became the Nox Pirates. That's a story from about 15 years ago.
Tumblr media
And there are governments and organisations that penalise people by taking their lives
Tumblr media
for seeking out knowledge. 👆👇
Tumblr media
From Clover,
Tumblr media
to Nico Olvia,
Tumblr media
to Rayleigh,
Tumblr media
to
(Egghead Arc spoilers under the cut)
to Pedro,
to the giants (👇 read right to left),
Tumblr media Tumblr media
to Vegapunk
Tumblr media
the power and desire to learn about history is emphasised and
Tumblr media
honoured,
(from chapter 396 👆)
Tumblr media
(from chapter 1066 👆)
and also acknowledged as a very dangerous undertaking.
Tumblr media
And even Cora talks to Law about
Tumblr media
the meaning behind the Will of D. not being lost, BUT "living on in the dark shadows of history around the world" (it's not easily seen either).
Like, knowing history and access to history/knowledge is one of the main themes of the manga. And Big Mom is a monster. And the World Government is a repressive monolith. And this guy (guy?) 👇:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
nuking places and people for not toeing the line, or for knowing too much; riddled with antipathy towards holders of the Will of D. and, with Artur's (Library of Ohara) claim (among others) that the ancient immense kingdom was formed by descendants of the D. clan (which is canon)—
Tumblr media
—then wouldn't you too be curious and more than a little pissed off that your curiosity could be the catalyst for persecution and genocide?
That searching for identity, roots...your reason for being, is not allowed? (Sound familiar?)
Like, those scholarly waters are nothing if not shark-infested.
Ultimately the pen (Robin's ability to read the poneglyphs, the scholars' meticulous research) probably will be mightier than the sword, and although bureaucracy can entrap, knowing how to read between the lines, or even to read them, can loosen the ties that bind, and help ensure they are not unfairly cast.
Keep fighting to study history, Law. I too want to know about the Will of D.

hey it’s one day since i read one piece chapter 1124 and im still thinking of luffy crying over not being able to save vegapunk. because like, if we’re being serious, luffy had lost two of his brothers, one when he was way too tiny (and ended up not having lost at all) but another who he tried so, so hard to save and ended up failing. and like, ace didn’t even ask to be saved, you know? luffy wanted to, because that’s his brother, and that’s what you do for your brothers.
and then, throughout the series, you see how luffy looks at death. he sees it as inevitable. especially in alabasta, when vivi talks about how she wants to save the country and take down crocodile, but without killing anyone on either side, he calls wishes idealistic and impossible. people die, but we should try to do achieve our goals anyway. you don’t have to carry this burden alone (i am not rereading alabasta rn to cite accurately)
and then, back to the whole series again. they always succeed in their goals, they cause immense property destruction sure, but most of the time they don’t kill people. at least, luffy doesn’t. and one piece rarely focuses on death of the local armies, and we are more or less lead to believe they don’t die (except for marineford). the only other arcs with deaths shown indubitably (not counting flashbacks) were in punk hazard, when law kills dofflamingo’s underlyings , in whole cake island, when big mom ate one of her kids, and wano, when people from the akazaya nine passed away, in addition to orochi and then big mom and kaido (i like to think they died. but you know, this is one piece. so i’m always skeptical of deaths in the series)
and so now back to egghead. they are off the high of defeating two emperors of the sea, luffy is declared an emperor, and they meet a guy that requests them to save him. and luffy promises, and luffy always keeps his promises. and they tried. they tried so hard, they really, really did. but they failed to save the human body, and this upset luffy so much.
because luffy loves. he loves and cares for the people he meets and these guys offered them food and told robin her long lost friend was alive and so many things happened and they tried, they really really tried, but luffy failed to save vegapunk’s human body and this isn’t the kind of failure he hasn’t had to deal with since ace passing away two years ago and suddenly it doesn’t matter how strong he is, he couldn’t even save one old man. so he’s devastated. he’s crying. he’s eating only grapes, and slowly too (nevermind they’re from elbaph and huge).
and zoro’s comment on luffy, i think it’s more like, at this point in the game, we should be aware that death is inevitable. i think he thinks luffy should accept that. he’s obviously not saying it to luffy though, he’s letting the boy grieve. but when luffy realises lilith is alive and that means so is vegapunk, he’s happy again. and the crew tells zoro luffy is good again too.
i don’t know where i was going with this. i just have really big feelings about luffy all the time.

one piece 1114 spoilers -
My theory for Egghead is that the mother flame powers the entirety of Egghead island, and the only way to stop Vegapunk’s message is to destroy the mother flame. The elders have said that the only thing they NEED to keep safe on Egghead is the mother flame, and it will probably continue the theme of the elders biting their own foot. Their refusal to give up the mother flame will cause the entire world to panic over Vegapunk’s message. Probably something like “if they destroy the mother flame, they won’t be able to sink the world without fuel for Imu’s weapon, but if they don’t destroy the mother flame, everyone will be able to prepare for their destruction.”
There could be something like at the last moment when Vegapunk is about to say something super important (perhaps a parallel to Clover’s death”, the elders decide it would be better to destroy the mother flame then let him finish his message. That way they would both lose out on the ability to sink the world as well as give the world too much information. That might force the elder’s and Imu to get their hands dirty rather than sitting back and letting Imu’s weapon do all the work and it could kick off the final war.

spoilers for one piece gear 5, and minor egghead island spoilers
gear 5 is so silly and i love it very much. and i think luffy accidentally using it when he feels strong emotions is also so silly. like just imagine being jinbe, trying to console/explain to your captain how and why this hologram of a giant parfait is fake, and he starts going God Mode™️. like it's canon that awakened fruits can be really draining for the user, and it's hilarious that luffy will spend this energy because he got tricked by a hologram 💔 idk

The thing is, we don't know about the Heart Pirates but we do know about Bepo and Law (at least in passing).
Tumblr media
What we know is that both are alive, as shown from the frame above from chapter 1117. Bepo is patched up, which means someone's seen to his wounds. Bepo was calling to Law about Vegapunk's discussion of the holders of the initial D. (Bepo, therefore knowing that Law holds it).
I'd like to think that Law fixed him up. I also think Law's just off camera (maybe hanging out with the crew!), but I know that others have more pessimistic points of view. Anyhoo, these two are alive and kicking, and I think if Bepo was devastated (as he would be, if the crew was gone), he'd look it.
The thing is that we don't know about Kid and the Kid Pirates, but we do know about the Fake Kid Pirates! (picture below).
Tumblr media
And as we know, they stepped in as the Fake Straw Hats when the Straw Hats were presumed dead, but were not. I'm taking it as a sign.

There's MUCH BIGGER STUFF IN THIS CHAPTER TO REACT TO but it is my duty as tumblr user namisweatheria to say: WEATHERIA MENTION!!!!!! Hoping this will eventually create a cool moment for Nami. OH HEY WAIT the place Robin went to in the timeskip was also mentioned!!!
Tumblr media
Well, that being important eventually was always a given. I totally get people wanting the timeskip to have more personal relevance with the strawhats before now, and I feel that, but I also always had faith that it was all gonna come back. Here we goooooooooooo!!!!

was watching episode 508 of one piece, the one where we see franky trying to leave the island he was poofed to after finding out the marineford news, and i realised something. vega punk is from this winter island,,, and his dream, since he was a child was to create an energy source that would warm up a whole island from within,,, and this is shown as something soo improbable in episode 508. and yet when we go to egghead island, we learn that vega punk did in fact achieve his dream. because he says the island is actually a winter island and he has created the tech to give it a tropical vibe within. so. vega punk. you crazy old man that would've benefited so much from taking an ethics class; congratulations on achieving your childhood dream
[sorry the people from your island do not enjoy it :( ]
