Ten Interesting Colombian Novels
1. Love in the Time of Cholera
By: Gabriel Garcia Marquez (Author)
“In their youth, Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza fell passionately in love. When Fermina eventually chooses to marry a wealthy, well-born doctor, Florentino is devastated, but he is a romantic. As he rises in his business career he whiles away the years in 622 affairs--yet he reserves his heart for Fermina. Her husband dies at last, and Florentino purposefully attends the funeral. Fifty years, nine months, and four days after he first declared his love for Fermina, he will do so again”. (Amazon).
2. One Hundred Years of Solitude
By:Gabriel Garcia Marquez (Author), Gregory Rabassa (Translator)
“One Hundred Years of Solitude tells the story of the rise and fall, birth and death of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendiá family. Inventive, amusing, magnetic, sad and alive with unforgettable men and women—brimming with truth, compassion, and a lyrical magic that strikes the soul—this novel is a masterpiece in the art of fiction.” (Amazon)
3. Delirium
By: Laura Restrepo
“In this remarkably nuanced novel, both a gripping detective story and a passionate, devastating tale of eros and insanity in Colombia, internationally acclaimed author Laura Restrepo delves into the minds of four characters. There's Agustina, a beautiful woman from an upper-class family who is caught in the throes of madness; her husband Aguilar, a man passionately in love with his wife and determined to rescue her from insanity; Agustina's former lover Midas, a drug-trafficker and money-launderer; and Nicolás, Agustina's grandfather. Through the blend of these distinct voices, Restrepo creates a searing portrait of a society battered by war and corruption, as well as an intimate look at the daily lives of people struggling to stay sane in an unstable reality”(Amazon)
4. The General in His Labyrinth
By: Gabriel Garcia Marquez (Author), Edith Grossman (Translator)
Bolívar, known in six Latin American countries as the Liberator, is one of the most revered heroes of the western hemisphere; in García Márquez’s brilliant reimagining he is magnificently flawed as well. The novel follows Bolívar as he takes his final journey in 1830 down the Magdalena River toward the sea, revisiting the scenes of his former glory and lamenting his lost dream of an alliance of American nations. Forced from power, dogged by assassins, and prematurely aged and wasted by a fatal illness, the General is still a remarkably vital and mercurial man. He seems to remain alive by the sheer force of will that led him to so many victories in the battlefields and love affairs of his past. As he wanders in the labyrinth of his failing powers–and still-powerful memories–he defies his impending death until the last. (Goodreads)
5.Fruit of the Drunken Tree
By: Ingrid Rojas Contreras (Author)
Seven-year-old Chula lives a carefree life in her gated community in Bogotá, but the threat of kidnappings, car bombs, and assassinations hover just outside her walls, where the godlike drug lord Pablo Escobar reigns, capturing the attention of the nation. When her mother hires Petrona, a live-in-maid from the city’s guerrilla-occupied slum, Chula makes it her mission to understand Petrona’s mysterious ways. Petrona is a young woman crumbling under the burden of providing for her family as the rip tide of first love pulls her in the opposite direction. As both girls’ families scramble to maintain stability amidst the rapidly escalating conflict, Petrona and Chula find themselves entangled in a web of secrecy. (Barnes & Noble)
6. Chronicle of a Death Foretold
By: Gabriel Garcia Marquez (Author), Gregory Rabassa(Translator)
“A man returns to the town where a baffling murder took place 27 years earlier, determined to get to the bottom of the story. Just hours after marrying the beautiful Angela Vicario, everyone agrees, Bayardo San Roman returned his bride in disgrace to her parents. Her distraught family forced her to name her first lover; and her twin brothers announced their intention to murder Santiago Nasar for dishonoring their sister. Yet if everyone knew the murder was going to happen, why did no one intervene to stop it? The more that is learned, the less is understood, and as the story races to its inexplicable conclusion, an entire society--not just a pair of murderers—is put on trial.” (Amazon)
7.The Dark Bride
By: Laura Restrepo
“Once a month, the refinery workers of the Tropical Oil Company descend upon Tora, a city in the Colombian forest. They journey down from the mountains searching for earthly bliss and hoping to encounter Sayonara, the legendary Indian prostitute who rules their squalid paradise like a queen”. (Amazon)
8. The Autumn of the Patriarch
By: Gabriel Garcia Marquez (Author), Gregory Rabassa (Translator)
“From charity to deceit, benevolence to violence, fear of God to extreme cruelty, the dictator of The Autumn of the Patriarchembodies the best and the worst of human nature. Gabriel García Márquez, the renowned master of magical realism, vividly portrays the dying tyrant caught in the prison of his own dictator-ship. Employing an innovative, dreamlike style, and overflowing with symbolic descriptions, the novel transports the reader to a world that is at once fanciful and real.”( Amazon)
9.The Vortex
By: Jose Eustasio Rivera (author), John Charles Chasteen (Translator)
young poet Arturo Cova and his lover Alicia as they flee Bogotá and head into the wild and woolly backcountry of Colombia. After being separated from Alicia, Arturo leaves the high plains for the jungle, where he witnessed firsthand the horrid conditions of those forced or tricked into tapping rubber trees. A story populated by con men, rubber barons, and the unrelenting landscape, The Vortex is both a denunciation of the sensational human-rights abuses that took place during the Amazonian rubber boom and one of the most famous renderings of the natural environment in Latin American literary history. (Amazon)
10. The Informers
By: Juan Gabriel Vasquez (Author), Anne McLean (Translator)
The life of longtime family friend Sara Guterman, a Jewish German immigrant who escaped to Colombia during the 1930s, Gabriel's book seemed an innocent attempt to preserve a piece of his country's rapidly vanishing past. But as Gabriel pours over his research looking for clues to his father's anger, he discovers a sinister secret locked in the pages. After his father's death, and with the help of Sara Guterman and his father's girlfriend, Angelina, Gabriel peels back layer after shocking layer of family history-from the streets of 1940s Bogotá to a stranger's doorstep in 1990s Medellín-to reveal a hidden portrait of their past-dark, complex, and inescapable”. The 75 books I read in 2018.
This was a very good year for reading! I read 15 more books than in 2017, and it’s the most I’ve read in a year since I started keeping track 8 years ago. And I really enjoyed the vast majority! (Not Ill Will though - good lord, that was a mess). Here are some standouts:
How to Love a Jamaican, Alexia Arthurs Arthurs’ story collection focuses on the Jamaican diaspora, stretching from New York to Jamaicans returning to the island. Taken together, the multitude of voices present a contemporary kaleidoscopic portrait of what it means to be Jamaican, and it ranges from tragic to bitingly hilarious.
The Witch Elm, Tana French I’ve long been a French fan, but her latest, the first to diverge from her long-running series, is easily her best-written book. There are two mysteries at the heart of the plot, but French also levels timely critiques on masculinity. The first 150 pages are a marvelous slow burn and a master class in building tension.
Fruit of the Drunken Tree, Ingrid Rojas Contreras Contreras’ novel, set in 1990s Colombia, alternates viewpoints between a young girl and her family’s teenage maid as they both grow up and navigate the violence in their country. It’s the most beautifully written book I read this year.
Pachinko, Min Jin Lee I owned this multi-generational saga about a Korean family that moves to Japan in the early 20th century for awhile before I read it, so don’t make the same mistake—the writing is beautiful, the characters are indelible, the plot devastating.
Neverworld Wake, Marisha Pessl I love every book Pessl has written, but this might be my favorite. It got promoted as YA and, as a result, seemed pretty much off everyone’s radar. After a car accident, a group of high school friends is caught between life and death until they can unanimously decide which one of them is allowed to return to life. It’s brilliant and the plot unfolds in ways you never see coming.
The Animators, Kayla Rae Whitaker I think this book was my biggest surprise of the year, since I hadn’t heard much about it but bought it during a Kindle sale and absolutely loved it. Mel and Sharon meet in college and form an animation team; they create films based on their difficult upbringings. It’s a powerhouse of a book, and it’s the only book that made me cry this year. I can’t recommend it enough.
The House of Mirth, Edith Wharton I’ve always liked Wharton but had never picked up House of Mirth—this is now my favorite of hers to date. Lily Bart is a beautiful socialite who loses her standing when her parents die and has to depend on the kindness of others in her social set; when that goodwill disappears due to ultimately petty reasons, Lily’s fate is sealed. I’m planning to continue reading Wharton in 2019, with Custom of the Country next on my list.
Fever Dream, Samanta Schweblin Fever Dream defeated Lincoln in the Bardo in 2018′s Tournament of Books, so I immediately bought a copy and finished it a few hours later. Schweblin is an Argentinian writer who lives in Berlin, and the book, translated from Spanish, follows the story of Amanda, who lays dying of a mysterious illness as a boy named David asks her questions about how she came to be there. It’s brilliantly plotted and absolutely terrifying; I’m thrilled she has a collection of short stories due out in February.

“One Hundred Years of Solitude is a 1967 novel by Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez that tells the multi-generational story of the Buendía family, whose patriarch, José Arcadio Buendía, founded the town of Macondo. The novel is often cited as one of the supreme achievements in world literature” (wikapieda)
2. Love in the Time of Cholera Gabriel García Márquez
“Love in the Time of Cholera is a novel written in Spanish by Colombian Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez and published in 1985. Edith Grossman's English translation was published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1988.” (wikapeda)
3.Delirium by Laura Resepo

Natasha Wimmer's English translation was published in 2007.Delirium tells the story of Agustina, a beautiful woman who suffers a breakdown. Her husband, who recently returned home to Bogotá, is determined to rescue “ (wikipedia)
4.Chronicle of a Death Foretold Novel by Gabriel García Márquez
“Inspired by an actual incident in 1951 in Sucre, Colombia, Chronicle of a Death Foretold tells the story of a series of events leading up to the murder of Santiago Nasar. Thus, Márquez interviews people in the town 27 years after the event in an attempt to determine how the crime took place. In the end, he concludes that everyone knew what was going to happen; however, no one did anything to stop it. A short and easy read, this novel is a perfect example of how expertly Márquez can weave a story.” (Gringa Journies)
5.The Armies Book by Evelio Rosero
“The Armies is told from Ismael’s point of view, a retired schoolteacher who lives in a small Colombian town. While the book begins with descriptions of idyllic country days, all of this comes to an abrupt halt when army forces enter the village. During the subsequent descent into chaos, Ismael’s wife goes missing, and the second half of the book focuses on his search to find her.” (Gringa Journies)
6. Return to the Dark Valley by Santiago Gamboa
“In this dark yet intriguing story, readers are introduced to a cast of a poet, a priest, and a diplomat as we follow their separate narratives. Later, they all come together to travel back to Colombia to right some of the wrongs experienced by Manuela. Although they return to a peaceful Colombia, each character is doubtful that this time of goodness will last. This novel is undoubtedly moving, but you may need a thick skin to get through some of the more heartbreaking moments”(Gringa Journies)
7. Reputations by Juan Gabriel Vásquez
“In Reputations, readers follow Javier Mallarino, a legendary political cartoonist in Bogotá. After many years with a successful career, we find Mallarino conscience-stricken over a decision he made years in the past. The novel explores the past, reputations of public personas, and the relationship between memory and truth”(Gringa Journies)
8. Colombia a Comedy of Errors by Victoria Kellaway and Sergio J Lievano
“This illustrated book brims with humor while exploring what it means to be Colombian. If you don’t know anything about Colombia, this is a great place to start your lessons. Moreover, at only 150 pages, you could quickly plow through this book on your flight to Colombia. Although it’s written from the perspective of anthropological analysis, it also provides quite the laugh!”(Gringa Journies)
9. Misspelled Paradise: A Year in a Reinvented Colombia by Bryanna Plog
“Misspelled Paradise follows Bryanna Plog during a year spent teaching English just outside of Cartagena. She provides an honest perspective on teaching abroad as well as the ex-pat experience in contemporary Colombia. If you’re considering following in Plog’s footsteps, I would highly recommend giving this book a read!”(Gringa Journies)
10. Fruit of the Drunken Tree by Ingrid Rojas Contreras
“Fruit of the Drunken Tree tells the story of Chula Santiago, a young girl living in a gated community in Bogotá, and Petrona, the Santiago family’s live-in maid. Set in the 1990s, Chula and Petrona are growing up during a time of extreme violence in Colombia, when kidnappings and car bombs were frequent occurrences. Surprisingly, these two girls from different sides of the tracks forge an unlikely friendship. Both will have to make difficult decisions to protect their loved ones.”(Gringa Journies)
