i (convert-hopeful) talked with my dad about converting and we both agreed that i should wait until i finish high school in april (my school is REALLY rigorous) before i start the process. im now effectively in the waiting game, but i still want to do a lot of research and learning before i start. do you have any ideas on what i should look at in the meantime? (books, topics to research, etc)

First off, welcome! 💙 I think you and your dad definitely made the right decision to wait until you graduate. Converting is a lot of work, and afaik most congregations/rabbis will not convert someone under 18.

For now, I would suggest reaching out to the rabbi of a local temple. Even if you can’t start the conversion process, I’m sure they would be happy to answer any questions you might have and you might be able to participate in community events.

For starters, myjewishlearning is a great resource for all things Judaism! Even as someone who was born Jewish, I still use myjewishlearning to learn more.

here are some books that I’ve not read personally but I’ve heard are very informative and helpful to prospective converts:

Jewish Literacy by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin

Choosing A Jewish Life by Anita Diamant

Why Be Jewish: A Testament by Edgar Bronfman

People Love Dead Jews by Dara Horn — this one is absolutely an essential and everyone, regardless of their connection to Judaism, should absolutely read it

I think I would also recommend you research different movements of Judaism (reform, conservative, orthodox) to try and figure out what would be right for you. Do note that while most everyone will accept an Orthodox conversion, there are many people who will not accept a Conservative or Reform conversion outside of their respective movements.

Be aware that Judaism strictly forbids proselytizing, and as such conversion is a long and hard process. Before you start the formal process you should probably refrain from practicing Judaism or its rituals by yourself, but I highly encourage you to check out what community events your local temple(s) have to offer. Many are open to the public. I would also recommend you attend Shacharit (Saturday morning) services sometimes if you are able. Just be sure to call/email ahead to let the temple know you will be coming as the Jewish community is wary of unfamiliar faces, especially right now.

Additionally, be aware that conversion to Judaism comes with all the downsides — including that you are likely to face antisemitism from family and friends. It seems your dad is supportive, which is great! Just be aware of that.

weird Keith Raniere story as related by Mark Vicente, there's a lot of stuff about Kieth caring about hacking and hacking emails in The Vox that doesn't really explain what he was after

according to Vicente, Kieth was after Clare Bronfman's father, Edgar Bronfman, and claimed, brace yourself, that Edgar Bronfman had stolen millions (or maybe billions) of dollars from the German Government (brace yourself) through his role as President of the World Jewish Congress (see where we're headed?) because Bronfman and the WJC both knew that six million Jews hadn't died in the holocaust (there we go) and was covering that up/pushing that lie to get money out of the Germans, I assume this is a reference to the money the West Germans paid Israel and the WJC in the early 1950s, when Bronfman Sr. was in his early 20s and long before he was WJC President (1981-2007)

in any case Kieth thought if he could bust into Edgar Bronfman's emails he'd find proof the Holocaust never happened....
