The demand for paper and paperboard production continuously grows worldwide, particularly in the packaging industry. Due to the paper's nature, it usually requires a surface coating to keep out water, oil, and other unwanted substances. These coatings can come with high financial and environmental costs. Using renewable coating materials that are also cost-effective can support sustainability strategies. A promising new technique using extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) recovered from anaerobic granular sludge may offer a cost-effective, sustainable approach for transforming wastewater into industrially valuable products and help to reduce carbon emissions. In a study published in Environmental Science and Ecotechnology, researchers coated paper using EPS extracted from various anaerobic granules in wastewater. This approach enhanced waterproofing (65%), as well as oil and grease resistance, while the multi-layered microstructure of the coated paper exhibited a smoother and less porous surface overall. So, too, in the production of objects it makes all the difference in the world if craftspeople work with a respect for their materials, emphasising quality and artistry in production rather than mass-producing commodities with no concern for handling materials sparingly, let alone for human needs. In the former, production and consumption go beyond the pure economic domain of the buyer-seller relationship, indeed, beyond the domain of mere material sustenance, and enter into the ecological domain as a mode of enhancing the fecundity of an eco-community. An ecotechnology — for consumption no less than production — serves to enrich an ecosystem just as compost in food cultivation enriches the soil, rather than degrading and simplifying the natural fundament of life. An ecotechnology is thus a moral technology, a technology that stands at odds with gigantism, waste, and the mass destruction wrought on the environment by capitalistic forms of technology designed purely for profit.

I studied on the site located at the Mevlana Boulevard, approximately parallel to the “Tarus” shopping mall. As a group, we focused on the car hybridization; because of the analyses we made on the Mevlane Boulevard, we see that cars are a major source for the ecological problem city has and on the Mevlana Boulevard there are too many car showrooms, parking lots and car station that create several problems. After the site analyses we see that there are lands focused on the way of use. There are mix used, residential and commercial lands. At the two sides of the boulevard, I classified sites as constantly used and not. Big part of it is for the cars and I called them as “dead spaces”. For my individual study, in my program I there are not just cars but all transportation related studies will be concern.
My overall strategy will be the “filtration”. Mevlana Boulevard is a providing very rich source for the design. I used Mevlana Boulevard as a human, energy and knowledge source which will be filtrated and used in specific studies. From the Mavlana Boulevard to the Tekstil Street every income will be processed. Frederick Decleck from Cameroon is a graduate of the master level study programme “Ecotechnologies”. In January 2023 student received a professional master’s degree in environmental sciences.
Frederick Decleck defended his master thesis about the public awareness of the waste management among the foreigners at Liepaja which is an unique topic. The data was collected by questionairs, the student also went to the waste recycling plant “Ķīvītes” in Grobiņa, he had an interview with the manager, which told him about the biggest problems the facility is facing.
During his research process, student has found out that the most foreigners in Liepaja don’t sort waste correctly because they don’t have the right information about sorting waste correctly, which is even worse, because when you don’t sort correctly, you contaminate the ones that are sorted correctly. In order to help to spread the information about it, student prepared the brochure about the waste management at Liepaja.
On the question of how was the research experience, the student said all went well, except the fact, that the student needs to do a lot of translation, because almost every document in Liepaja is in Latvian, but the supervisor of the student helped him with the translations.
About studies at Liepaja University Frederick Decleck says that this is an excellent environment to study, it is very quiet, a lot to see if you like sightseeing and compared to Riga it is more silent. Liepaja is a place is for the study inclined people.
