Look at that nose!!! 😍 To get a photograph of these mammals is not easy at all... Round-eared Elephant Shrews inhabit the more arid regions of the South, Western and Northern Cape. They forage on insects as well as roots and tubers - and they have been documented feeding on fallen berries as well. They are solitary animals, believed to be monogamous. They live in burrows that they expropriate from other rodents, reuse or dig themselves. Macroscelides proboscideus, somewhere dry, Western Cape, South Africa. #canon #canonmacro #macro #ishootwithorms #bionerds #biodiversity #planning #surveys #support #ecoexploration #mammal #mammals #mammalsofinstagram #shrew #shrews #shrewsofinstagram #elephantshrew #Macroscelidesproboscideus #nature #wildlife #arid #cute #longnose (at South Africa)

This is Kali. His name is short for Kalibasib which stands for “Kalikasan Bagong Sibol” (nature newly sprung). He is the only surviving Tamaraw bred in captivity. He is 19 years old (turning 20 on June). According to experts, a tamaraw's life span is estimated to be 20-25 years. Because of this, we’re worried that Kali might have to retire soon due to old age. 😞 - Did you know? The Tamaraw (Bubalus Mindorensis), is one of the Philippines’ critically endangered species. - Fact: Tamaraws can only be found in Mindoro, Philippines. - Indeed, Tamaraws are a part of our being Filipinos. - #SaveTheTamaraw #EcoExplorations #TamarawConservationProgram (at Tamaraw Gene Pool Farm, Brgy. Science program goes statewide: ecoEXPLORE program for kids now available in N.C. State Parks
A program that’s been getting Western North Carolina kids outside since 2016 is now a statewide offering, with a whirlwind tour of 10 North Carolina state parks over the next couple weeks celebrating ecoEXPLORE’s arrival at all 41 park units.
“There’s a lot of benefits to being outdoors,” said Jonathan Marchal, youth education manager at the N.C. Arboretum in Asheville. “A lot of times it’s…

Older boys in the village play cards in the early afternoon while drinking water and eating white rice. Their confused faces may have been a result of a communication error or it might have been the first time they had been photographed by an iPhone.

Look at that short tail! South African Pouched Mouse is a terrestrial species which will reclaim burrows that have been vacated by other species, or dig new ones. They will block up this burtow from the inside during the day, and have also been recorded blocking up the burrow entrance when they go out foraging to prevent theft of their food storage or predation. They are called pouched mouse for the two pouches that extends from their shoulders to the corners of their mouths. They use these pouches to carry seeds and nuts back to their burrows where they hoard them in a special chamber. One of their biggest predators are Barn Owls. If there is one thing they cannot do, it is to sit still for a photo shoot... out of about 200 photos, only one is useable! N.C. Arboretum receives $1 million grant for statewide outreach
N.C. Arboretum receives $1 million grant for statewide outreach
All across Western North Carolina, teachers and students are headed outdoors to find, observe and photograph local wildlife as a part of ecoEXPLORE, a citizen science program developed by The North Carolina Arboretum.
