Q&A: A blueprint for sustainable innovation

Atacama Biomaterials is a startup combining architecture, machine learning, and chemical engineering to create eco-friendly materials with multiple applications. Passionate about sustainable innovation, its co-founder Paloma Gonzalez-Rojas SM ’15, PhD ’21 highlights here how MIT has supported the project through several of its entrepreneurship initiatives, and reflects on the role of design in building a holistic vision for an expanding business.

Q: What role do you see your startup playing in the sustainable materials space?

A: Atacama Biomaterials is a venture dedicated to advancing sustainable materials through state-of-the-art technology. With my co-founder Jose Tomas Dominguez, we have been working on developing our technology since 2019. We initially started the company in 2020 under another name and received Sandbox funds the next year. In 2021, we went through The Engine’s accelerator, Blueprint, and changed our name to Atacama Biomaterials in 2022 during the MITdesignX program.

This technology we have developed allows us to create our own data and material library using artificial intelligence and machine learning, and serves as a platform applicable to various industries horizontally — biofuels, biological drugs, and even mining. Vertically, we produce inexpensive, regionally sourced, and environmentally friendly bio-based polymers and packaging — that is, naturally compostable plastics as a flagship product, along with AI products.

Q: What motivated you to venture into biomaterials and found Atacama?

A: I’m from Chile, a country with a beautiful, rich geography and nature where we can see all the problems stemming from industry, waste management, and pollution. We named our company Atacama Biomaterials because the Atacama Desert in Chile — one of the places where you can best see the stars in the world — is becoming a plastic dump, as many other places on Earth. I care deeply about sustainability, and I have an emotional attachment to stop these problems. Considering that manufacturing accounts for 29 percent of global carbon emissions, it is clear that sustainability has a role in how we define technology and entrepreneurship, as well as a socio-economic dimension.

When I first came to MIT, it was to develop software in the Department of Architecture’s Design and Computation Group, with MIT professors Svafa Gronfeldt as co-advisor and Regina Barzilay as committee member. During my PhD, I studied machine-learning methods simulating pedestrian motion to understand how people move in space. In my work, I would use lots of plastics for 3D printing and I couldn’t stop thinking about sustainability and climate change, so I reached out to material science and mechanical engineering professors to look into biopolymers and degradable bio-based materials. This is how I met my co-founder, as we were both working with MIT Professor Neil Gershenfeld. Together, we were part of one of the first teams in the world to 3D print wood fibers, which is difficult — it’s slow and expensive — and quickly pivoted to sustainable packaging.

I then won a fellowship from MCSC [the MIT Climate and Sustainability Consortium], which gave me freedom to explore further, and I eventually got a postdoc in MIT chemical engineering, guided by MIT Professor Gregory Rutledge, a polymer physicist. This was unexpected in my career path. Winning Nucleate Eco Track 2022 and the MITdesignX Innovation Award in 2022 profiled Atacama Biomaterials as one of the rising startups in Boston’s biotechnology and climate-tech scene.

Q: What is your process to develop new biomaterials?

A: My PhD research, coupled with my background in material development and molecular dynamics, sparked the realization that principles I studied simulating pedestrian motion could also apply to molecular engineering. This connection may seem unconventional, but for me, it was a natural progression. Early in my career, I developed an intuition for materials, understanding their mechanics and physics.

Using my experience and skills, and leveraging machine learning as a technology jump, I applied a similar conceptual framework to simulate the trajectories of molecules and find potential applications in biomaterials. Making that parallel and shift was amazing. It allowed me to optimize a state-of-the-art molecular dynamic software to run twice as fast as more traditional technologies through my algorithm presented at the International Conference of Machine Learning this year. This is very important, because this kind of simulation usually takes a week, so narrowing it down to two days has major implications for scientists and industry, in material science, chemical engineering, computer science and related fields. Such work greatly influenced the foundation of Atacama Biomaterials, where we developed our own AI to deploy our materials. In an effort to mitigate the environmental impact of manufacturing, Atacama is targeting a 16.7 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions associated with the manufacturing process of its polymers, through the use of renewable energy.

Another thing is that I was trained as an architect in Chile, and my degree had a design component. I think design allows me to understand problems at a very high level, and how things interconnect. It contributed to developing a holistic vision for Atacama, because it allowed me to jump from one technology or discipline to another and understand broader applications on a conceptual level. Our design approach also meant that sustainability came to the center of our work from the very beginning, not just a plus or an added cost.

Q: What was the role of MITdesignX in Atacama’s development?

A: I have known Svafa Grönfeldt, MITdesignX’s faculty director, for almost six years. She was the co-advisor of my PhD, and we had a mentor-mentee relationship. I admire the fact that she created a space for people interested in business and entrepreneurship to grow within the Department of Architecture. She and Executive Director Gilad Rosenzweig gave us fantastic advice, and we received significant support from mentors. For example, Daniel Tsai helped us with intellectual property, including a crucial patent for Atacama. And we’re still in touch with the rest of the cohort. I really like this “design your company” approach, which I find quite unique, because it gives us the opportunity to reflect on who we want to be as designers, technologists, and entrepreneurs. Studying user insights also allowed us to understand the broad applicability of our research, and align our vision with market demands, ultimately shaping Atacama into a company with a holistic perspective on sustainable material development.

Q: How does Atacama approach scaling, and what are the immediate next steps for the company?

A: When I think about accomplishing our vision, I feel really inspired by my 3-year-old daughter. I want her to experience a world with trees and wildlife when she’s 100 years old, and I hope Atacama will contribute to such a future.

Going back to the designer’s perspective, we designed the whole process holistically, from feedstock to material development, incorporating AI and advanced manufacturing. Having proved that there is a demand for the materials we are developing, and having tested our products, manufacturing process, and technology in critical environments, we are now ready to scale. Our level of technology-readiness is comparable to the one used by NASA (level 4).

We have proof of concept: a biodegradable and recyclable packaging material which is cost- and energy-efficient as a clean energy enabler in large-scale manufacturing. We have received pre-seed funding, and are sustainably scaling by taking advantage of available resources around the world, like repurposing machinery from the paper industry. Kim Mulligan

Veronica Chou

Featured on the cover of the latest issue of GG Magazine, Veronica Chou grew up in the mass-market fashion industry, with her family having had an immense impact on the Chinese and global textile industries. In her youth, Chou frequently visited her family’s knitwear and denim factories. Even then, she recognized mass-market fashion factory practices that were not sustainable and questioned the impact of organizational and manufacturing processes on the natural environment.

After a life-changing trip to Nepal in 2015, Veronica Chou decided it was time for a change and reset her career with a focus on sustainability. Throughout the trip, she saw the palpable impacts of the fashion industry on the natural world:

Chou started by selling her company Iconix China Ltd and researching alternative textile technologies that were more environmentally friendly. Next, she started her own clothing company, Everybody & Everyone, which is both entirely sustainable and size-inclusive. Through her brand Chou has been able to promote a variety of sustainable fashion practices such as renting party dresses that will only be worn once, purchasing versatile and long-lasting clothing pieces, using recycled materials, and investing in new sustainable technologies.

Jochen Zeitz

Highlighted in the last GG, Jochen Zeitz, CEO of Puma in 2010, conducted an environmental report for the brand. This report was the first of its kind to be published by any major company and provided sobering results: Puma had a global environmental impact of 145 million euros. After these findings, Zeitz immediately pledged himself to more sustainable practices with a focus on manufacturing. This commitment to sustainability stuck with Zeitz, and he soon left his position with Puma to focus on saving the planet and turning his visions into realities

Zeitz now has his own conservation foundation that is dedicated to protecting the global biosphere. He feels a particular attachment to Africa and promoting sustainable tourism throughout the country. Zeitz recognized, however, that true sustainability cannot be achieved if companies do not also change their practices. In response to this, he founded the nonprofit B-Team with Richard Branson with the goal of helping executives shift their goals from short-term profit to human-wellbeing and the well-being of the planet.

Now, as CEO and President of Harley-Davidson, Zeitz has been able to bring sustainable practices to yet another company. He established the Brand and Sustainability Committee and helped develop the brand’s first electric bike which he believes is the future of Harley-Davidson.

Christoph Ingenhoven

Focusing on sustainability in all areas of life, the last issue of GG magazine highlighted and spoke with Christoph Ingenhoven, architect of the Lanserhof health resorts, who has been designing sustainable buildings for thirty years. The world-renowned medical resorts he has constructed provide soul-soothing aesthetics while maintaining the highest environmental standards. During projects, Ingenhoven uses healthy materials that don’t give out toxins and ensures materials are inspected by building biologists who are experts in spotting environmental hazards.

As Ingenhoven designs sustainable health resorts, he takes a holistic approach in his designs, focusing on both individual biological health and ecological safety. While certain materials like polystyrene are safe for use in a medical resort, their manufacturing process is not sustainable and in Ingenhoven’s own words “horrendous”. In order to follow his practice of sustainable construction, which is what his trademark supergreenⒸ represents, Ingenhoven must be selective in his materials and focus on moderation. His expertise in sustainable construction has been proven both by the Lanserhof health resorts and his most recent project: Kö-Bogen II, an office and retail complex with 30,000 hedge plants that doubles as Europe’s largest green facade.

Michael Poliza

Michael Polizo is an expert at appreciating the natural world. The Hamburg-based nature and wildlife photographer has worked all around the world and organized luxury tours to remote locations. Travel was his way of life. When the coronavirus caused extensive restrictions on travel, Polizo could no longer go abroad and visit stunning locations across continents. Yet, his passion for nature and its beauty never subsided. Instead, Polizo began biking around his home country of Germany, discovering beautiful routes which highlighted Germany’s natural landscapes alongside windmills and old bridges.

This year, Polizo made the shift from luxury tours in remote locations to luxury e-bike tours in Hamburg. He noted that while 80% of customers come from Hamburg, most have never seen the city from the vantage points he had discovered. Polizo has always allowed his customers to appreciate the natural beauty of the world; now they can do it in their own backyard.

Crowd funding Plan Paper (E-Coat Inc.)

Company Name/Purpose

The name of our start-up company is E-coat Inc. and we are based in Detroit, Michigan. Our start-up manufactures and installs an environmentally friendly non-fiberglass building insulation. Our insulation consists of a plant based fiber called cellulose. We also incorporate a mixture of recycled plastics and discarded denim, which promotes ecological sustainability.

Project Name

When a potential backer views a crowd funding campaign page, the first thing that they will see is the project name of the campaign. For this reason, I made sure that my project name properly summarized our company’s products and services with eye catching content. After much thought, I decided to name my campaign “Building Insulation Made from Plants/Recycled Materials”.

Value Proposition

To avoid confusion, a good value proposition should not be too long. Rather, it should be short and concise, with a maximum of six words. To remain compelling, it should also explain why my products and services can add value to potential customers, and prove why my solutions are better than the competitors within the marketplace. I created five value positions and kept the one that represents our brand best. The first value proposition that I created is “Sustainability made affordable”. The second being “Bringing Eco-conciseness to you”, followed by “Helping your no waste cause today”, and “Sustaining for the future”. Finally, decided to finalize our value proposition as “Helping you build sustainably”. I Chose this value proposition because it clearly states our purpose.

Customer Avatar

Demographics are an important aspect to consider when evaluating a business plan. Our customer demographics include adult men and women between the ages of 25-65 who are constructing or renovating buildings or homes.

Some psychographics of my targeted customers include people who are ecologically conscious of the earth’s environment and people who are willing to pay more for their insulation to fulfill their environmental responsibility. Therefore, we are going to target people who have a college degree and earn an annual income of $80,000-$250,000.

According to Forbes.com, A 2017 study on corporate social responsibility revealed statistics on customers' responses when a company supports social or environmental issues. 68% of millennials bought a product with a social or environmental benefit in the past 12 months. 87% of consumers will have a more positive image of a company that supports social or environmental issues. Further, 88% will be more loyal to a company that supports social or environmental issues, and 87% would buy a product with a social and environmental benefit if given the opportunity. Funding Goal

Through our campaign plan model, we made sure that our funding goal amount was a realistic number that will fulfill the project and backer rewards. According to a Kickstarter Study, a very high funding goal is likely to result in a failed attempt. A lower and more realistic funding goal is more likely to succeed, and may even exceeded your original goal. (How do you decide on your projects’ funding goal) In order to fulfill our project, we set our crowdfunding campaign goal to $4,000. If our campaign exceeds our goal, we have crunched the numbers and can successfully scale the amount exceeded.

As of now, our start-up has raised enough money to open for operation. Our crowdfunding campaign is designed to raise extra funds while boosting our brand awareness through our rewards. We need to raise $2,000 for rewards. Since we have the funds to start our venture, we are able to spend half of our goal amount on rewards. Everything that exceeds the $2,000 for rewards will be a bonus for our company. With that being said, we want our rewards to be nice.

Campaign Duration

Through our crowdfunding campaign plan, we solidified that we are going to pursue a 30-day crowdfunding campaign. The rationale behind our campaign duration is derived by a Kickstarter study. According to Kickstarter statistics, the highest success rates come to campaigns that last 30 days or less. (What is the best length to run my campaign?)

Platform Choice The platform that we have decided to pursue is Indiegogo. We made this decision because the Indiegogo website has an environmental category that directs browsers to hundreds of previously successful and active environmental campaigns. Indiegogo seems to value environmental campaigns more than the other top crowdfunding platforms. However, there is a very popular crowdfunding platform that specifically focuses on environmentalism, called Greencrowd. This would be Indiegogo’s biggest competitor in regards to our start-up. There are many potential backers that browse Indiegogo but are not devoted to environmentalism. In comparison, Greencrowd draws traffic from people who are exclusively concerned with the environment. Greencrowd may have a more targeted market for my campaign. However, Indiegogo has much more web traffic than Greencrowd, with a proven environmental segment. Overall, I just believe that my campaign has a better chance of success with a top tier platform, like Indiegogo.

Fan Base Building

We will show gratitude through a number of awards and gifts. For example, we will offer backers to pre-order our insulation products. This will allow backers to experience the impact of their contribution while being the first to own our product. Pre-orders are one of the most popular types of reward, this approach simply involves selling pre-orders of the product you’re raising money to produce. This is a great mid-level reward and is an exciting way for backers to experience the impact of their contribution. We will also offer company apparel as a reward for our backers. This is a perfect entry-level reward for donations under $20, this category offers backers some sort of personal recognition for their support.

If you chose to invest in E-Coat, you will be part of the gentrification of Detroit. The city is on the rise, and improvement is inevitable. If you want to profit from making a positive impact on the city of Detroit, while reducing the ecological footprint of the city, this is the right opportunity.”

Written Communication

Written communication is a very important aspect of a successful crowdfunding campaign. The content of my blogs are critical because they need engaging in order to be seen by a wide audience. Our blog content is run through the Tumblr platform and is designed to evoke the emotions of the environmentally conscience audience.

In order to maintain an audience, we are going to create a new blog post every three days. It is important that we blog often and include content that relates to our company cause. For example, our blogs will consist of content relating to insulation, and environmental cleanup, along with other environmental news. Another critical aspect of successful written communication done through social networking. In order to maximize our social media engagement, we have created a 30-day social media schedule to implement within our platforms, which includes crowdfunding updates, our environmental responsibility, our company newsletter, and crowdfunding award updates.

The last written communication campaign step was to write a personal thank you email to my donors. This task is important to complete because a company’s support base must be acknowledged in order to gain brand loyalty. I kept my letter short and thoughtful, roughly eight sentences. Our thank you letter is as states:

Dear [recipient’s preferred name],

I hope that you’re doing well!. As you know, I’m raising money for through my crowdfunding campaign through Indeigogo. I wanted to reach out to you with gratitude for your contribution towards E-coat Inc.

We hope to raise $4,000 through our crowdfunding effort, and you have helped us take great steps towards that goal. Please feel free to share my campaign on Facebook and Twitter, too!
