With dog training, do you know if there's a recommended amount of time to wait between things so the dog doesn't associate them? Like if the dog does action A, and I need to do action B afterwards, but I don't want her to associate them as cause/effect?

I'm not sure if there's a specific interval, I think it depends on the individual dog and how far ahead they're able to think and how easy it is to break their focus.

One example is your dog is being walked, and when he does his business you immediately end the walk and go home because all you needed was for him to go potty. But now he knows as soon as he goes potty the walk ends, so he holds it as long as he can.

In that instance, I add an objective between "go potty" and "go home." So instead of immediately going home I give the dog a treat for appropriate pottying outside (my particular dog Egon regresses in potty training easily) and walk to a landmark such as a tree or hydrant before turning around and walking home.

These little extra steps help break the association with going potty and the walk ending. I also feed my dogs after walking so they have something to look forward to and not just thinking "I don't want to go back inside."

Tuunbaq fixates more than Egon and has quite a bit more drive, so I'll usually break his concentration with something that requires more brain power, like practicing a down stay and a few tricks before calling it quits.

Generally dogs build associations in pretty brief intervals so the longer you can stall that interval, the better chance you have of breaking the association.

I'm not a dog trainer or behaviorist by any means, so this is just coming from what I've picked up via observation with my own personal dogs. Your dog may be easier or harder than mine and it will take some observations on your part to determine where they land.

How we take medicine multiple times a day (with a picky eater / suspicious of food dog)

Teach them to open their mouth on command.

Teach them to accept treats (that you know they enjoy and are easy to swallow) when placed in their mouth after “open”

Teach them what “now” and “later” means in everyday conversations with them

Teach them how to choose “now” or “later” and practice giving them this choice whenever possible (you can ask this for things like potty, play, nap, kibble, etc)

Once you have all the pieces you can put it together. Start with a medicine that’s easy to swallow and least aversive smell/taste. Ask them to “open” and WAIT until they actually open their mouth. If they don’t open then end the exercise and try again later. If they open and then change their mind LET THEM. This is about empowering them with choice.

When they are ready, put the pill in the back of their mouth past their molars if possible. I support her chin to encourage her to swallow or else she might gag it up. I DON’T HOLD HER MOUTH SHUT. If she spits the pills up I LET HER and offer to try again. If she’s not feeling it then we end the session and try later.

There are a lot of contributing factors that can make this easier or harder. I’ve tried various methods and even tried teaching her to take the pills herself like a treat but this is the least aversive method we’ve found for her in particular. She doesn’t mind it and will “ask” for medicine regularly without being prompted when she needs help with various things. We use words like “belly medicine” for stomach ache. “itchy medicine” for allergies. Besides pills we also have “eye medicine” for allergy drops and “ear medicine” for cleaning out her ears when they bother her.

Another great thing about this method is that I’m not trying to sneak pills past her so it makes introducing new medications super easy. I’ll often let her sniff the pills between each round so she knows exactly what she’s getting and because I’m putting it at the back of her mouth all she has to do is swallow so the taste, texture and size doesn’t make that much of a difference. Just be sure to ask your vet if a pill is supposed to be chewed VS swallowed. In that case I’ll grind the medicine in a pill grinder and mix it in with peanut butter or cream cheese and feed it to her on a spoon (teaching your dog to swallow liquids from a spoon like a person is also a useful trick!)

I recommend hearing the song "Found" by Jacob Banks while reading as I use this song as an inspiration!

- One day, Task Force 141 was sent to a town-turned-warzone area. Buildings made of stone crumbled down because of human-made explosions. After the battle had died down, Price and Soap sent Ghost along with Roach to sweep the area for any more hostiles.

- Instead, they heard a faint whimpering that was not... human. Ghost and Roach followed the sound, and it came from behind a large debris. The boys lifted the stone, only to find a little German Shepherd puppy whose body got stuck on the cracks in the ground.

- At first, Ghost wanted to leave the little creature be, but Roach couldn't do that as he saw his pleading eyes, begging for help. Ghost looked at the mutt, and his heart melted, so he finally helped him out of the cracks.

- Ghost and Roach poured water on the puppy to clean him up, then noticed that he had white marks on his nose. "Look, Ghost." "What?" "He looks like you" "...You sayin' I look like a dog?" "No, Mate. See these white marks on his nose? It kind of looks like your mask." "Oh." "Let's name him! Since he's you but dog version, let's name him after you." "WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU SAY--" "Riley. His name's Riley."

- When Ghost and Roach went back to Soap, he SCREECHED at seeing the dirty puppy. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! THROW THAT MUTT AWAY BEFORE I MAKE YOU BLOKES RUN AROUND THE BASE 50 TIMES AROUND!" Roach calmed his CO down and said, "Soap, Sir. We don't have to throw him away. He's a german shepherd, a perfect breed for military purposes. I don't see a reason why we can't have another member of the force who'd help us alert or track the enemy."

- Still, Soap denied as they don't have a K9 trainer. They'll have to train the dog themselves and who will take care of him? Who'll feed him, train him not to pee and shit on the floor, train him to KILL? Certainly not Soap.

- "GHOST WILL!" Roach shouted as his finger pointed at his best friend. "His eyes are fixed upon Ghost as he's the first person he sees, so maybe that's why Riley's so attached to Ghost." "YOU ALREADY NAMED HIM??" Before Soap could further argue, Price's voice entered the radio, "Simon, if you can make him useful for the team, then you can keep him. If you can't we'll send the muppet back to England, open for adoption." Ghost stared at Riley's eyes,

"Your call, Son."

- Despite Soap's disagreement, Ghost decided to keep Riley.

- It wasn't easy at first, as Ghost's past with dogs wasn't that good either. His father would take a feral dog home and locked him in a room with it all night. However, they became friends really quickly since the dog only wanted to follow Ghost. He's the one who feed him, let him live in his room, potty train him, and Price even invited one of his friend, a real K9 trainer to help him train Riley.

- Over time, Riley started to grow really big, and he's finally ready for the battlefield.

- Riley quickly proved himself in the battlefield as he's VERY useful. Riley can detect enemies, bombs, alert them, and even kill the enemies. Evander has been doing well here! We are currently working through the resource guarding and starting to make some serious breakthrough progress. About 50% of the time he is chosing to come away from his prize instead of hunch over it and snarl- the rest of the time he begins by growling but still comes away from it. I believe an adopter will find much more luck calling him away from his prize with a cookie if they need to take something from him for any reason. Once he comes away from it, he stops guarding it and I can pick it up no problem.

He is most of the way potty trained at this point. He had some accidents here and there but I've mostly learned his schedule. He also really likes to spend time outside, so I think a home with a safe, fenced yard or strong tieout would be great for him.

He does still have a pretty explosive tantrum about strangers coming to the house, though he calms down quickly once he's met them.

He is totally fine with both thunder and fireworks! Slept through the holiday celebrations like it was nothing :)

Now that he's learning it won't hurt him, he's fairly easy to trim his nails and perform basic grooming if I go slow for him. He is good for baths and I wet him whenever it's particularly warm outside, and he stands still for me and doesn't fuss.

He loves walks and hikes and is learning loose leash walking fairly well. He continues to be non-reactive and non-aggressive on leash when outside the home- I think a potential adopter would probably have the best luck with him meeting someone new on leash outside.

At this point I think it is mainly the resource guarding and these stranger-in-my-house tantrums that make me concerned for a future adopter. They would need to be committed to continuing training with him to manage this behavior, whether with me or with a different experienced trainer. Evander is a wonderful little guy who loves life and would benefit from someone who is understanding of his needs. He's come a long way the past month and I continue to look forward to his progress.
