Some of my lovely mutuals might know this, but I was born and raised in an East Asian culture, where there is a the strict code of respect and curtesy. Words, conversation can be high-text, and there is alot of reading between the lines.
Although the social codes and the indirectness can be suffocating at times, there is a beauty in the formality.
And I would love to introduce one example.
There is one very famous translation of the phrase, “I love you.” By the Japanese author, Nastume Soseki (1867-1916)
When a young student translated “I love you.” into 君のことを愛しています。(Direct translation of I love you in Japanese) Soseki rejected this translation.
Instead, Soseki translated “I love you,” to
“The moon is quite beautiful tonight,”
Even though this is a product of his time and the culture in the Meji period, it is an incredibly subtle, nuanced translation I can’t help loving.
So when the two couples confess their feeling towards one another, they don’t look at each other but they look up at the same night sky and say,
“The moon is quite beautiful tonight,”
And you are supposed to respond,
“I’ve never seen such a brighter moon than this,”
Which means, “I love you more.”
*Although now in Japan, this phrase is soooo overused that is becoming a cliche. And really corny. So I definitely do not recommend using this when you are flirting with someone from Japan. Unless you want to impress him/her.
*Also the rhetorics become increasingly difficult when in comes to rejection.
“Stars are more beautiful than the moon,” means “I’ve got someone else in my mind,”
“The moon is too bright tonight.” would be “Thank you, but you can aim much higher than me,”
“It’s beautiful because you see it from far away,” means “I really don’t have interest in your affections.”
“But the moon isn’t blue,” would be “yeah, you an me? Never going to happen between us.”
I’m rambling on too much.
Anyway, I just really want to see this kind of subtlety on the Benophie season. Benedict can’t straight up declare his love all and mighty back in London at No.5, so it would be lovely if there is a secret code of telling Sophie that he loves her.
A poem, or a certain phase, that makes Sophie blush and tell how ardently Benedict loves her without saying “I love you.”
Just my little thoughts for the season🥰

sometimes i think about keeper of the lost cities (it is my special interest) and go “holy shit how is this a middle grade series”
so here is an incomplete list of things that happen in kotlc that would get a kotlc movie’s rating moved to R (read at your own risk).
kidnapping
torture
horse copulation
graphic violence
graphic birth
unspecified but apparently flavorful cursing
human experimentation
body horror
very detailed depictions of almost-deadly allergic reactions
non-consensual drugging. a lot of it. of CHILDREN
and here is a list of things that i think the US government would hate about kotlc
criticism of government and discussion of how one should handle being in a position of power (you should not enjoy being powerful)
elfin society has a eugenics problem and this is consistently criticized
queer coding isn’t even coding atp marella is GAY gay
and finally, criticisms i have of kotlc.
weird eurocentric beauty standards
tam and linh. great characters. CONSTANTLY fetishized bc they’re asian. sophie calls them k-pop idols, anime characters, etc. from what i can tell, though, they’re vietnamese. LET THEM BE VIETNAMESE WITHOUT COMPARING THEM TO EVERY EAST ASIAN STEREOTYPE
everyone is thin. LITERALLY EVERYONE. why is everyone thin and why does thin equal beautiful. shannon messenger explain your biases challenge
there are SO many poc in the books, but elf culture is shown as a monolith. show the cultural nuances that come from before humans and elves separated. i want to see the human influences in their clothing, hairstyles, accents, vernacular. have elves who have historically lived in china wearing something similar to hanfu. give tam and linh ao dai. give me a nigerian elf with fulani braids. give me culture through style and bodies and voices and music. i want to see it. it’s beautiful and it is NOT shown enough
dex needs more page time.
alden and della are NOT criticized enough. they are complicit. they are part of the problem in the lost cities. they are not all bad, but they are not all good either. CRITICIZE THEM, SHANNON.

Module 1: A Not Ruin(ed) Trip
☆.。.:*
Once again, a long ride back to NOHS after a long day of filming a movie trailer for Araling Panlipunan at the Ruins. We reached our homes, with our groupmates already starting to plan the editing process of our trailer while the three of us reflected on what we had just experienced during the filming day.
It was such a tiring, productive, and memorable day; these kinds of days rarely happen, and we're thankful that it did. It's amazing how a busy day becomes so memorable, be it for the better or worse. Days like these, where we pour all our time into them, develop us as a whole, and in the end, we always learn something new.
To sum up everything, we learned that having well-planned events doesn't always guarantee they will go smoothly, just like how a treasure map marks the spot, but it doesn't always mean the treasure is at the center of the spot.
PS:
From Nejie: I also learned that going to places I wouldn't usually go isn't that bad of an experience; in fact, I actually enjoyed it.
From Iris: I definitely enjoyed the rollercoaster of emotions I experienced during the filming. I wouldn't say that I enjoyed it during the filming, but I can surely see the fun I had after everything. I ran around crazily, chasing all of my group members, trying to slap makeup on their faces. I mimicked blood and bruises, as well as royal makeup. I must say that I feel proud about my performance, as it was my first time putting my questionable makeup skills to use. I definitely learned that one should be confident in using a skill they have learned, even if they are not an expert.
From Sophie: There's a lot of emotion to feel; at first, I was literally excited, but that quickly faded when the rain started pouring down. I also get nervous while acting and saying my lines because I can't help but worry that I'll make a lot of mistakes. Tiredness also got in the way. When I got home from the shoot, I felt so exhausted that I couldn't move. Finally, the feeling or emotion that really stood out for me was happiness. Not only did I get to spend time with my classmates, but we also got to work together as a team, and I could tell that we worked well together.

Module 2: Strong Monsoon Winds
☆.。.:*
The winds gush through and follows the bird's calls. Such as this week that went by a breeze, we can't say for sure that it was a good ride though. Especially when we got stunned by the Research summative test, but oh well, it's more room for improvement. Aside from Research, we learned about cell division in Biology which is mitosis and meosis. In Biotechnology, we learned about the effects of genetic mutation and the syndromes that comes with it.
As for Math, it was properties of parallel lines cut by a transversal, conditions for parallel lines, and the possible measures of the third side. While in English nothing happened because our teacher was busy for an assesment. On the other hand, in MAPEH we learned about East Asian arts. And lastly, ESP, wherein we learned about being honest. That basically makes up our week this time, not too extreme, not too underwhelming either. Just like a warm nissin cup noodles during a frigid day, everything must be balanced, as it should be.
PS:
From Nejie: Rushed na kami tenk you.

I love your responses so much lol, I'm really enjoying this opinions exchange tbh.
as for me i have several thoughts actually.
i think that when it comes to pen & el people have this sadly common weird black & white mentality, the virgin and the whore typa thing, and that completely ruins the purpose of the show.
yes, el was selfish when it came to dismissing other womens conceptions of marriage because she can afford being a spinster, and she was selfish in running away to be close with a man without a chaperone knowing her family was in a scandal and she was being threatened by the queen.
yes, pen was inconsiderate when it came to publicly announcing marinas pregnancy, writing that way about el and even not telling her about whitesledown.
but they're still very young and they clearly are very fond of each other, they were literally staring at each other longingly all season 3. & it's the fact that characters like anthony (who i love btw) are afforded grace and understanding but with female characters it's always the opposite.
as for cressida, i still kinda dislike her character especially because of the bully redemption trope the fandom is pulling even saying she's better than pen. i feel sympathy for her but I don't want her to end up with a bridgerton, whether it's ben or eloise (not that I think it's going to happen but still). I'm so glad she isn't sophie and so glad she's apparently not one of the stepsisters either, but it looks like she is returning so.. (https://www.thewrap.com/bridgerton-season-4-cast-couple-release/)
AS FOR S4
I would really like for them to lean into korean sophie (even tho idk how they would justify it but we'll see). like many people, I would love for her silver dress to be an hanbok or at least mixed with korean elements, flashbacks of her mom and grandma (which were one of the biggest losses of the book) and perhaps a line or two about her knowing korean.
this is very interesting because according to the casting call she is fully east asian, so both her parents are and it looks like araminta and the sisters will be too. I wonder if they'll be korean too or maybe japanese/chinese since they're not related to sophie so they could be whatever.
I desperately want to see posy and sophie being friends (and possibly for someone chubby to play posy) because we really need more female friendships in bridgerton. I think s4 is the perfect opposite since they've introduced sophie and michaela.
what i hope for is a kate/sophie friendship where kate sort of mentors her and helps her with her feelings for benedict. maybe with anthony doing the same with benedict himself. I wouldn't be opposed to polin helping too since the show seems to have set a precedent of leads passing the torch and helping the next ( see; daphne with anthony in S2, and kanthony with colin in S3).
other female friendships i feel like are NECESSARY are the ones eloise should form with sophie and michaela. being friends with a low class woman and a lesbian would really help the process she already started of seeing marriage in another light, since marriage is something both sophie and michaela want but can't have, and that would be a perfect setup for her season.
then, I want them to really tone down the mistress thing, which tbf looks like they're already doing if that line about ben offering his heart to her is a hint. I think they could have him offer her to be his lover (as in him not marrying and staying a bachelor and secretly seeing her). it would make it better and still keep the element of sophie not accepting because she wants to live her love story without shame and her children to be recognized.
and that may be an unpopular opinion, but I don't want them to have sex until the very end (think kanthony) because i feel it would parallel all the previous seasons where ben just threw himself into sex and had everyone at his feet. and a scene a la kanthony (again lol) of him having that death stare as he watches another man flirt with sophie would be perfect. something poetic about the rakest Brothers desperately crying at the idea of their girls potentially choosing another man.
as for the NEXT SEASONS.
there's so much i wanna talk about.
I'm actually kinda sad that sophie is the last casting announcement for a good while and we'll have to wait years for gareth and lucy.
i know they'll not disappoint with gareth, even if the hopes of sapphic hyareth seem lost now since they already did a controversial sapphic genderbent and the other queer character is not having a queer endgame so.
as for lucy I suppose that's a bit hypocritical of me but i want her to stay a woman, i sort of imagined grucy (horrible ship name btw you're right) like a mini kanthony because of the way kanthony is impactful to their story (and now with the show we would get a wedding scene parallel lol) and so i imagined lucy as a south asian woman (rebecca ablack is my specific imagine of her rn) even tho I'm not sure I'll be likely because they already casted two main asian characters. i just think a lot of subtle details in her story would be lost if she was a man, that's it.
for s5 I'm imagining they'd have to recreate a max/franny dynamic (search for clips of "the nanny" trust me) like someone already suggested. and i love your idea of eloise running away by herself, it's much better, but they will have to change a lot of things to make the story suitable to the show. I actually think this is going to be the hardest season to adapt. don't have much requests/ thoughts rn.
for s6 my biggest wish is for michaela to be a singer because it would make franchaelas dynamic sparkle. imagine a parallel of franchaela (maybe during the years in India) of fran playing the piano while michaela sings (both yearning but can't see each other)
I want them to show how michaela really helps francesca get out of her comfort zone. in that link I sent you in this ask Jess mentioned francesca reflecting on passion next season amd that will of course be a central theme of the season.
ALSO I feel like with two female leads the opportunities with gowns and subtle hints in the dresses are HUGE. and i need michaela in red, especially burgundy since she's supposed to represent passion.
and i feel like them setting violet up (with lady D's brother of all people) is intentional for s6/7. like I definitely see s6 violet encouraging francesca to love again and using marcus as an example.
if, like you said, hyacinth debuts in s6 I'd love for them to sneak in hermione and lucy too, just subtle hints like them being introduced to the queen at the palace scene, mentioned in penelopes papers and being seen with other debutantes.
for S7 I need them to add a little drama because the book is a little too annoying and I'd like for hyacinth to be fluent in Italian because I never liked her somewhat speaking half in the book (if they do that plot)
people talked about nicky mondrich possibly becoming her love interest but not endgame, and I would not be opposed to him being her theo. they need to show us lady d and hy being close, they've already robbed us the penelope/ lady d dynamic.
also if they do introduce lucy and hermione in s6 they could even have them (especially lucy) in a few scenes with hyacinth in S7 so they can set up S8.
and once again more female friendships would be nice since they erased felicity from the show and hyacinth looks like she'd love being friends with other debutantes, especially since greg will have his own friends too by then and all of her sisters will be married.
that way they could have people (especially hy kate & anthony) favor lucy so that when greg shows interest in hermione the family reacts like when colin got engaged to marina and maybe we would have a parallel of hyacinth welcoming lucy like she did with penelope in S3.
and finally S8, if they do give me my south asian lucy I'll be soo happy. i think they should cut the plot of hermione being in love w the secretary because it's useless and focusing on her loving lucys brother the whole times, which leaves lucy sorry for gregory while he suddenly does not gaf because he wants lucy. perhaps hy could even try to help instead of being hostile towards her.
and, they'd need to tone down his story too, but the rest is okay.
also i need you to know that franchaela/hyareth & kanthony/grucy are very real the thethered to me and I can elaborate (maybe in the next ask because this is huge)
can't wait to hear your thoughts and thank you for the safe space to rant again!
You’re absolutely right about Eloise, Pen, and Marina being young. That’s at the core of Eloise and Colin’s stories in the show: they’re young and so while they’re fully realized characters, they need to grow up in order to be able to accurately identify what exactly they want out of life and do the necessary inner work to achieve that. Edwina has a similar story in season two: in the end she’s able to come into her own knowing that she can make her own choices for her life; she doesn’t need Kate to be her advisor and Kate doesn’t need to be Edwina’s advisor. Kate, Anthony, and Marina are also similar because they were thrust into roles with large responsibilities at young ages before they could properly learn how to approach situations with true maturity and dignity. It’s all about the contrasts! But they all start off immature in some way.
I adore Cressida as a character because she’s just so compelling to me. I was going to say that her being somewhat nicer this season is a sign of her growing maturity but that’s not true and is also giving her too much credit. It’s only because she’s desperate for Eloise’s companionship that she changes her behavior towards Pen, but even then, she still acts petty many times over. I think it’s what Jessica Madsen said: She can’t really defend herself from her father’s abuse so she bullies her peers to give herself some power to wield. Her mother does the same thing by writing horribly about the Bridgertons in Cressida’s issue of Whistledown. I’m very interested in seeing where the writers decide to take her story!
Sophie doesn’t have much in the way of a character arc in An Offer from a Gentleman, at least not one that’s substantial enough for the show. I’d love (well, I’d probably cry, but you know what I mean) for her status as a bastard to mean that she lost out on the ability to learn about/be immersed in her family’s culture and so part of Benedict insisting that she deserves more is that his confidence in her inspires her to take control of her life and learn about the culture she lost out on. Although, if they were going to do that, the casting call couldn’t be for just any East Asian woman. But I also can’t imagine them not revamping Sophie’s arc considering that they decided to do that for Kate, Eloise, and Penelope.
I also want to see all the women of the show being friends, really. I really hope that we get some more of Lady Danbury’s married ladies game nights. I especially want to see Penelope and Kate being friends and then jointly advise Sophie. I also want Violet giving Sophie advice because she works for the Bridgertons and spent a lot of time with them in the book, so I think it would be cool to see her advise the love interest, too. Eloise seems to be very close with Michaela (they’re holding hands in the first epilogue!) by the time they’re leaving for Kilmartin, so I very much hope that we get to see their friendship, especially since it could be used as a bit of a contrast for Francesca and Michaela’s relationship—even if that contrast only really appears later in season six once Frannie starts really falling for Michaela.
I want the mistress offer to be toned down, too, and that has been the set up in these first three seasons. In the book, Benedict is still very much required to marry eventually by society’s rules for upper class men, but in the show he’s contrasted against Anthony in that. Where Anthony is like “if I’m the head of this family, I need to act like it and take a wife for the future of the viscountcy” but Benedict really doesn’t feel that pressure from society at large. Benedict is very much of age to marry, but all the ladies flock to Colin in season three, who is still very young, and has also conveyed that he’s not truly up for grabs. I think Benedict can ask Sophie to be his lover and say that they might not be able to be married because of their differences in class, but they could have a comfortable life together where she would be his wife in everything but name. And then Sophie tells him to GTFOH with his nonsense because of her strict opposition to bearing bastards.
And you know, for a jealous Bridgerton leading man moment, Footman John is a fan favorite. Maybe he and Sophie become friends and Benedict is like, Now who the hell is THIS GUY???? Meanwhile they’re literally besties because Footman John has dealt with Eloise’s chaos and Sophie’s dealt with Hyacinth’s. (I hope she’s Hyacinth’s lady’s maid since we already know that Eloise has a specific lady’s maid.) I also don’t want Benedict and Sophie to have sex until the end because I really didn’t like that she was very adamant about not having bastards and then is just like, “Oh, well,” afterwards. Like, girl????????? They could always do other sex acts and have steamy makeout sessions and then the actual PIV sex is left for once they’ve agreed to get married/are off on honeymoon at My Cottage.
I’m also sad we won’t be getting lead casting announcements, but it’ll still be exciting to get ones for the secondary characters!
Now that I’ve finished On the Way to the Wedding, I finally feel like I can approach my thoughts on Greg & Lucy’s story fully and big changes for s4 onwards without restraining myself. I do appreciate the nuances and the details that would be lost if Lucy were a man, but I also come at the situation from the perspective of answering this essential screenwriting question: What makes for the most meaningful story? The most meaningful is the most interesting story, too. Changing Lucy to Lucas would preserve the main beats of the story: Richard and Hermione still marry, Lucas is still required to marry Haselby (the genders are just swapped). Lucas could still very much be a rule-follower and care about not ruining Richard and Hermione’s new life together. Besides, the whole thing of Gregory more or less kidnapping Lucy isn’t going to be in the show regardless.
Overall, I feel that telling a story about two queer men falling in love is more important than telling another straight story in Bridgerton, you know? I feel like it would be weird to have this opportunity and not take it. The biggest change would obviously be Gregory’s infatuation with Hermione, but I think with his season likely going last, it would be fun to take the opportunity to draw parallels and differences between him and ABC. Gregory’s waiting for that spark, but it’s not happening. So, like Anthony, he decides to step into the light and see what happens, setting his cap at Hermione because she seems like a good candidate. He’s charming like Colin so then, like Benedict, he’s able to be casual about his pursuit of Hermione.
I also think the show benefits from what friendships we do see and would benefit from more of them, especially friendships between men and women, considering that the only one we have is Colin and Pen—and they’re one of the main romances of the series. So then we would get Gregory and Hermione’s friendship, which Gregory mistakes for a sign that they’re extremely compatible because Violet’s always saying to marry your bestie and that obviously worked out for Colin, so it should work out for him, too. And then we would also have Lucas and Hermione’s friendship.
We already saw Pen be completely ignored by suitors in favor of Eloise, so I don’t think we need to preserve that dynamic with Lucy and Hermione. I also think Richard should still be the eldest and therefore the earl, so then being younger, untitled brothers is something that Lucas and Gregory have in common. At this point, I have so many wonderful things to say about genderbent Lucy and I don’t want to go back, lol.
I think s5 will also be the hardest to do but they started laying the foundation for it in s1, so I believe that it will be executed very well, just like every other season. I also think that a lot of groundwork will be laid in s4, especially with Marina’s death. I think she’ll die in s4 and since it’s Benophie season, it’s not necessary to make it a huge thing for the whole season. So then if they want to do flashbacks to that day to establish how that affects Phillip in s5, they can take a lot of artistic license with it to get around the fact that Ruby Barker is done with the show. Plus, it would be way more interesting to have Marina’s death be more about Pen in s4 before Phillip in s5 because obviously Pen will feel extremely guilty. And then Colin will take what Marina said to him in s2 to comfort Pen because, ultimately, the situation was going to turn out horribly no matter what and letting Colin marry her likely wouldn’t have prevented her death.
I love your idea of Michaela being a singer! Especially because it seems that they’re setting Eloise up to be Michaela’s friend and confidante instead of Colin due to the genderswap. But them having singing in common would be a great way for Colin and Michaela to bond. Now I want them to sing a song together!
I also think it would be really funny if Eloise acts as a sort of buffer between Frannie and Michaela and then she’s like, “Oh, man, again? Why do all my friends fall in love with my siblings!?” I’m also really excited to see Michaela and John’s dynamic! In what little we did see, they’re so different but John is so comfortable around her. I’d love to see Frannie have a similar dynamic with Michaela, where she sort of pushes them both to be more bold and outgoing, at least in terms of expressing themselves. I can’t remember where I’ve expressed this before but I really want Violet to marry Marcus. Like, she’s been holding onto the Bridgerton name for so long, I think it would be interesting to see her grapple with feeling like she’d be losing something fundamental by giving up Bridgerton as her surname.
I’d love to see Hermione and Lucy ahead of Gregory’s season because it was just awkward for them not to be out in society. Like it was gross enough for Edwina to only be seventeen, I think having Hermione and Lucy not be fresh debutantes would be fantastic. (Also, and this doesn’t fit here, but since Hermione can’t dance, that makes s8 a really great opportunity to show off most of the previous couples dancing since if they do genderbend Lucy, then Gregory and Lucas can’t really dance, either.)
I think Hyacinth can just be fluent, too, since the distinction between her being fluent and not being fluent is meaningless as it matters to the plot. Besides, being pretty fluent in Italian doesn’t mean it wouldn’t take her a good amount of time to read through the journals. I also think that part of what made Hyacinth’s book a bit of a bore is the lack of other Bridgertons, which I feel is true of a lot of the books. As they get married, we see them together less and less, and that not happening in the show is something I very much hope is achieved. Also, going back to Gregory’s book, I like your suggestion of Hermione and Lucy sharing some scenes with Hyacinth. I’m still attached to the idea of Hyacinth becoming friends with Daisy Mondrich, especially if she comes out in season eight instead of Hermione (and Lucy) coming out then.
I wouldn’t mind Nicky Mondrich being a non-endgame love interest for Hyacinth. She’s someone he’s friends with, she’s a lady out in society with a good reputation (when this would occur), and she would make a good baroness in his eyes. But I also would love it if it happens in Hyacinth’s season as a tangible example of someone that Gareth could lose Hyacinth to, as Gareth’s father/uncle (lol) constantly taunts him with. And then Lady Danbury is torn between the matches because she wants to support them both.
Also, I think it’s a bit much to say that we’ve been robbed of Penelope and Lady Danbury’s friendship when it seems pretty clear to me that it’s simply been saved for future seasons of the show. Going forward, as Lady D mentored Alice Mondrich in s3, she’ll mentor Pen in s4 as she finds her balance between writing the column, her marriage with Colin, spending time with their family, and being a mother.
I am really interested to see how everyone will react to Francesca and Michaela because that would set up how they’d react to Gregory getting with Lucas. But if they don’t genderbend Lucy, I’d love to have that comedic element where it’s similar to Daphne’s assumption that Kate was Edwina by Anthony’s reaction. Gregory never gets engaged to Hermione so I don’t think it’s as similar to Colin’s situation with Marina.
I agree that Hermione being in love with the secretary shouldn’t be included in the show because building up her relationship with Richard in the background is a much better way to spend that time. And then they’re a contrast to Colin and Penelope where Richard and Lucy have been in love with each other for a long time and are aware of each other’s feelings, but Richard’s simply a little shy and not very forward with his affection.
I know I took forever to answer this but my classes are ramping up as my Bridgerton fixation is beginning to wane (as the URL change is evidence of). And as much as I’d love to keep chatting about meta for this show because it’s so fun, I can’t guarantee that I’ll have the time to answer long ones anymore. But I’ve had such a great time!

Lulu, I am hurt you haven't posted my last ask. Anyway, it doesn't look like your blog is that popular, I wonder why?
Is it perhaps that Benophie is more popular than Polin? Oh well, I am sure you will get over it eventually.
I can't wait to see who will be Sophie, I am so excited she will be East Asian, aren't you?
Well, have a good day Lulu.
I know you will think that you ignoring me is frustrating to me, but I find it hilarious that you started a hate blog that would be popular and no-one is interested because you are the only one who truly hates Benophie. But then as you are a racist you hate any couple that isn't white so it is not surprising that you are hating Benophie even before we know who will be playing Sophie. This is the dumbest shit I have seen.
I don`t care what you belive you know or not.
It`s just funny you are acting like this.
Maybe my account is not popular because they don`t know her
I saw someone saying this: You know what i would have be so SO SOO funny??? if sophie was white and fat, becuase all the benophie would have hate as you all ( and kanthonies) hate Penelope. Becuase is that that reason you hate, if sophie was like her, even if she was a sweet little bird you would have hate her for her body and for being white .
Tumblr media
Im so sad that didn`t happened.

I don’t know if they’re gonna do an East Asian actress or a black actress or Middle Eastern actress, and I don’t know if Shonda Rhymes be givin a shit about the reddit people, but if Sophie POC… oh lord. The racism that will ensue… it might be worse than what happened with Rege Jean Page (off topic but he’s such a fine man, I can’t even deal with him actually, I’m this close to writing about him fr).
They might as well just cast Lily James, she did good as Cinderella, she can do Sophie lolllll
I got on the Bridgerton train late—with S2—so I don't remember what RJP had to go through, but I do remember a whole lot of backlash against Simone when she was cast as Kate.
And like, getting on my soapbox? An adaptation is an interpretation. Everyone is better off as thinking of the show as its own thing inspired by the books instead of holding the books up as some untouchable thing.
Because like. The men in the show aren't awful, but they sure are in the books. Except Michael I love you Michael.
Simone was incredible. Rege was incredible. Whoever they cast as Sophie will be incredible. Julia told her story, now it's Shonda's turn. There's room for both without fans of one picking the other apart, yk?

I don’t care much for Gareth Bryne/Siuan or Thom/Moiraine. But I do appreciate that the former go on a journey, learning to understand and appreciate each other. I’ve also not read New Spring so have no strong feelings on Siuan/Moiraine (I do love both women however). Even so, I can totally understand those who are super happy about that coupling because they like the ship, because representation means a lot to them and/or because they’ll get to see that romance done well on the TV show (something RJ did not excel in).
But there’s something that happens to fandoms when people buy into actors’ personalities/ships that shuts down conversations about characters. The Game of Thrones fandom was an example with people taking arguments about Dany & Sansa’s arcs and making them about Emilia and Sophie or Jonerys vs Jonsa. I feel like it’s happening now with The Wheel of Time, although to a lesser extent as the show is still new and our fandom is mainly really welcoming. The fandom is opening up to new people & I hate the idea of sounding like a gatekeeper - I promise that’s not my intention. But it gets tiring seeing people on Twitter (incidentally with Rosamund Pike display pictures) automatically assuming any conversation that relates to the character Moiraine as an attack on Rosamund Pike if it’s not in line with her being an angel and getting the storylines they want for her.
Having a conversation about the whole bond issue? Lan is a horrid man who was ready to leave Moiraine for someone he met yesterday. Moiraine, the angel, did nothing wrong. Happen to be okay with Siuan/Gareth or Thom/Moiraine? Today’s latest unsolicited hot take is how could you support a relationship that would have a black woman be subservient to a white man? Were people genuinely caring about racial dynamics, I’d get it but when it’s the same people shutting down any conversations that touches on their ideal path for particular characters it just makes me roll my eyes.
Being black on any day is exhausting and maybe I’m just extra triggered today because of everything happening in the world but the whole let’s disingenuously pull race into a conversation about characters because I want to push a particular ship is not the move people think it is. Book!Siuan is not black. While some Tairens have darker skins, Book!Siuan is a fair skinned woman with blue eyes from a culture based on France/Spain with elements of South East Asian cultural dress and practices thrown in. The show is already clear that this is a Siuan/Moiraine zone so why act like race is your biggest concern on a topic that’s a) a non-starter where the show is concerned and b) not even relevant in the case of the books?

Why do you say if Sophie exists on the show at all? We know they're doing the 3rd book for season 3 and they're gonna start filming soon. At this point I think it's extremley unlikely that we're getting a gender-bended version of Sophie just based on everything we know of the show and this production. There's a better chance of us getting a white Sophie (which is definitely not happening due to the bad optics) so idk why this is still up for debate.
From what I've seen the Sophie as an East Asian woman fancast was started by East Asian fans who wanted to see themselves represented and it picked up steam in the fandom.
I think I already said that I have no issue with the way East Asian fans feel about Sophie being East Asian, and I think their desire to see an East Asian Sophie is of course valid; but I honestly think that some white fans that are dead set on Benedict being with a woman use that to shut down the idea of Benedict being with a man. I know that, because I've seen them do it. It's usually used in conjunction with the "you're a misogynist if you don't want Benedict to be with a woman" argument. A lot of people discuss this show online. "(Some) East Asian viewers want Sophie to be East Asian" and "(some) white fans use that in bad faith arguments" are two things that can both be true.
And I say "if" because we don't know. We won't know until we know. I don't know why you phrase things as "definitely" this, or "definitely" that. Do you work on the show? Because if you don't, I don't think there's any way for you to know more than anyone else.
It's literally just my opinion and the way I phrase things as someone who has zero inside knowledge of what the show's doing, dude. I don't know why it would bother you.

My bet is on Sophie running away, I don't think they are gonna reveal the next lead without giving the current leads their moment to shine so my bet is her running away and 1 or 2 months later they reveal her (Simone was 2 months later too) besides I don't want the scene of Benedict looking at her for the first time because is such an ICONIC moment that I want the whole audience to be marvelled and focused at Luke T's acting!
Hello! I was just wondering why do you think there's a good chance that Sophie has been cast already? Also do you have any fancasts?
Answering two in one! (Warning this is long)
Yes, I think saving a Sophie reveal for next season is the best choice.
I think we already have Sophie casted because they’ve hinted her coming and I’m pretty sure the show is in pre production already since they’re filming s2 and s3 back to back. Also in the Bridgerton TUDUM, Charithra was talking about how she found the role and it was her agent that said, “I think this show is gonna be big” so with that context s1 wasn’t even out yet and they were already casting for s2. They’re probably following the same timeline. Although I don’t think we’ll get a casting reveal so soon after s2. Simone’s was around February but only because it was accidentally leaked, and the rest of the new cast were revealed in April. So maybe we’ll get an announcement around July (mid summer)?
I don’t have any specific fan cast atm. I hope they go for someone more unknown so they can really become Sophie Beckett. They might stay within the Netflix actor circle since that’s what they like to do a lot for their shows. Netflix knows this is one of their biggest shows now so they won’t take casting lightly.
As a WOC I would love to see her as one as well; I just hope that casting understands and has worked through the potential problems that can arise with a story like aofag (the whole India thing has me a bit worried tbh just like the “love solved racism” line and made the show way more complicated; I would’ve liked it a whole bunch better if they didn’t even mention it). As someone who has seen representation of their race and culture on screen, some of the best representations are when the story isn’t solely focused on our struggles or culture. It’s just an amazing story about someone who happens to be a poc. I think the show could’ve broken more boundaries by casting the Bridgerton’s as a family of color (even though I love most of their casting choices), because then we could’ve followed interracial couples that didn’t always include a white romantic lead, but that’s probably asking for too much honestly 🤷🏻‍♀️.
One of my favorite fancastings for Sophie is casting an East Asian actress; that just makes sense for some reason (the girls that get it, get it). It would also be a nice nod to one of the oldest iterations of Cinderella that was a Chinese story from the ninth century, “Yeh-Shen.” This edit by @inksuvich is absolutely beautiful and I think about it all the time 🤍
But no matter how they cast Sophie I will 100% support the actress because this fandom can be very toxic ☕️

some leverage: redemption reactions
i finished leverage redemption today! and i don't have anyone to talk to about it so, here we have my reactions for all eight episodes, both positive and negative. please feel free to reblog/comment -- discussions are what i'm here for! (under a cut because spoilers and also this ended up being 2k. whoops!)
EPISODE 1: the too many rembrandts job
the "aww, this guy is trying to pull his first heist! how cute" job
what they chose to do with nate was... interesting. it might just be that i read too many of those cracky "here's how they should explain nate's absence" posts, but i was expecting something funny. the grief permeating this episode -- it makes SENSE, but it was still weird. leverage doesn't usually have sadness like this. pain, yes, rage, certainly, but sadness? not usually
the way sophie immediately spots the signs of a con and slips into a character? phenomenal. i'm here for EXPERTS BEING EXPERTS and this show does NOT disappoint
harry wilson is a really solid character! most impressively, he's not flynn, which is impressive enough that i'm making a whole bullet point about it. i was worried that noah wyle was kinda a one-trick pony, but it appears not! good for him tbh
i'm LIVING for the ot3 moments in this episode. "what happened?" "we happened" YESSSSS!!! i wish we'd had more domesticity, but i know they did what they could
"he gets it from his father" FUCK!!!!!
the discussion about redemption in this episode is FANTASTIC but personally i am still delirious with excitement about "my nana leads a multi-denominational household" so expect those thoughts in 3-5 business days
EPISODE 2: the panamanian monkey job
the "flash electropop concert" job
BREANNA INTRODUCTION! i love her so MUCH, y'all. we only got to see her dynamic with hardison in this one episode, but man, it manages to be one of her best dynamics anyway. i just! i love her! i love the way the team works with her!
"in our field, you're one of the best. but there, you're the only one." god we have ELIOT/HARDISON rights and i am NOT OKAY. just!! them!!!!!! being supportive!!!!!! they have learned how to be sweet with each other! they work together so much better (in part because we're seeing them from harry's outsider pov instead of nate's insider pov, but STILL)
midway through this episode, i thought "huh, leverage always focuses on specific people, when really the problem is systematic, and pretending it's anything different is just an excuse to not fight for change". and then at the end harry talks about how the system itself is broken! i love knowing that john rogers and i were reading the same tweets last summer. it's a good feeling to trust the people making a piece of media
who let noah wyle speak spanish. whoever it was, they need to rescind their permission
god, the parker/hardison in this episode. THE PARKER/HARDISON IN THIS EPISODE! they KILL me friends they KILL ME!
also just like, hardison in this episode in general. he made a star trek reference! he made a doctor who reference! he decides there are other people who need him more! the way they wrote around gina bellman's maternity leave in s2 was good but this was phenomenal.
also i'm here for ot3 crumbs so "is this like the time when eliot wanted us to say no" is going on my ot3-is-canon conspiracy board
this is a tiny detail but eliot taking out the drone with a goddamn ORANGE was so good. he's so good at his job!! they're all so good at their jobs!! i know i literally just talked about this but AAA
EPISODE 3: the rollin' on the river job
the "sometimes you just want to rob a vault wearing a floofy dress, and that's valid" job
i did... not. like. how the villain in this one was an immigrant whose exploitable weakness was a "desperation" to be included in the upper crust. and the fact that they beat him with a literal southern belle who explicitly beats him BECAUSE her family has been in the area for "hundreds of years"? it just feels Iffy.
also iffy about this episode was breanna's characterization. it felt inconsistent. she feels inconsistent across the whole season, but this episode in particular... she tells harry she's only with the team because she's desperate, that she doesn't believe in hope, and then at the end of the episode she tells parker she wants to be there to change the world. and like, even in the first place, she's not here out of desperation! SHE asked to join the team! like, i can see how it all kinda fits together, but it just feels... inconsistent. idk. i think these scripts all could've benefited from an extra round or two of editing.
anyway! i loved the way they tied hardison into these episodes, even though aldis hodge couldn't be there. he has binders! breanna doesn't want to read them! parker did! he put in big letters, "when in doubt, trust the person in the van". i'm just so !!! about how much i love him and how much he loves his team and how much his team loves him. FOUND FAMILY, BABY!
all inconsistencies in breanna's characterization aside, i really liked her speech at the end. i know how she feels! it's really nice to have someone on the team who's from -- not my world, really, but a lot closer than any of the others. it's a nice feeling! i love her a lot. i hope her writing gets more consistent
lol, parker ate eliot's carrot cake. i love the parker/eliot rights we get in this show, they're so domestic and it's wonderful.
EPISODE 4: the tower job
the "hardison made his partners learn klingon" job
watching this episode was what made me go "they're not going to make us sit through a harry/sophie romance... right? right?"
i'm still not sure they're gonna let us avoid it but it COULD work so... i've decided to just not worry about it for now
i liked the number of ways the con goes wrong! it was fun to watch them work on the fly like that. i think them not having a dedicated Mastermind(tm) is a good watsonian explanation for their plans being pretty haphazard in general, but it's good, they think well on their feet
nate was a chessmaster. he had the whole situation in his mind from the beginning, accounting for every possible outcome. parker and sophie are much more adaptive, and it's cool to see. they can rely on their respective skillsets a lot more than nate could
a really solid episode! probably one of the strongest ones in the season. i liked it a lot.
(ALSO as mentioned above the klingon lines were fantastic and not just because they were a star trek reference -- every time eliot and parker both mentioned hardison, together, it added a year to my lifespan)
EPISODE 5: the paranormal hacktivity job
the "sophie was worryingly prepared to fake her death" job
i know why they characterized the client as a skeptic, i really do, and i loved the format of this episode, but also. But Also. she should've been a love interest for breanna and I'm Right.
having a girl's episode was the CORRECT choice. they do crimes in their free time! they fleece newbie, cruel criminals! it's so good!
it would've been cool to have eliot around for the assassin guy, but it was also cool to see the others take him out without having eliot to rely on. it's like getting to see how they'd take out eliot, if they were ever on opposing sides.
PARKER CANONICALLY USES SCRIPTS IT'S THE BEST THING EVER
breanna bristling about letting the criminal into the theater's electric system was so good god i love her so much. she knows hardware! i bet she likes to work with her hands. i bet she stims. i bet she has adhd
actually, sidenote, but i LOVE these headquarters. they look so nice! the stage is so nice! i loved having an episode set in and around it, it was such a good choice.
EPISODE 6: the card game job
the "FINALLY AN EXPLICITLY QUEER LEVERAGE CHARACTER" job
QUEER BREANNA QUEER BREANNA QUEER BREANNA QUEER BR
UNFOLLOW ME NOW THIS IS GONNA BE THE ONLY THING I POST ABOUT FOR THE REST OF TIME
GOD, what a good way to reveal it. it's fully about her! i love queer romances, of course i do, but i don't think i've ever seen a character come out without a romance being their reason for doing so (however indirectly). i still think she should've gotten a date with the client from 1x05, but i really liked this too.
this episode just felt like a love letter to fandom, and i love that. i love how much it shone through. i'm used to writers specifically going out of their way to make fun of fans and laugh at them, so it was just. really nice to have someone stand up and go, no, this is important for a reason! people love this for a reason! it MEANS something!
very fun to watch eliot swordfight. very fun to watch sophie recite a sonnet in her classic fashion. very fun to watch parker work at being a good mentor. breanna was so excited about the card game! they're all so good!
oh, and i guess harry's here too.
EPISODE 7: the double-edged sword job
the "harry is addicted to mobile games, which is a mood" job
hot take alert! i think this is the weakest episode of the season by a LOT. it needed so much more editing. it felt so disjointed, so all over the place. the plot was haphazard but in a muffled way, where you had no idea why they were doing what they were doing. the climax was sudden and didn't make any sense. it was just weird.
i'm not the person to comment on this but it feels kind of lazy to cast an east asian guy to play a socially-awkward tech genius. just a thought.
oh, of course jonathan frakes directed this episode. sometimes his stuff is really good but other times (ahem, ds9 3x02) it's disjointed and all over the place. i'm not even surprised it was him.
idk if i have anything else to say about this. oh! some of the team moments were great -- mostly involving eliot. i loved the moment of him recognizing the headshot, i LOVED the ten seconds of everyone teasing him. he and parker talked about the wellbeing of their friend, the woman whose ex tracked her down!
separate bulletpoint to say how much i LOVED his conversation with breanna outside the house. he's so good at reassuring! he could go deeper there, talking about being better than your worst day, but he knew when not to push! it was so good.
"first off, this guy can't TOUCH hardison" deserves its own bulletpoint because like. y'all. Y'ALL.
EPISODE 8: the mastermind job
the "eliot is more than just a pretty face" job
oh man this post is so much longer than i thought it would be. okay just one more episode and then i'm done.
the callbacks to original leverage were SO well done and made me feel emotions without feeling overbearing.
i didn't like the central premise -- that nate would share so many details with a random insurance agent -- in the first place, but i did like how it allowed them to bring back nate without actually hiring timerty mcasshole.
i liked eliot's insistence that he's more than just the muscle! he is, and it's really good to know, textually, that the writers do too!
me, watching the resolution of the episode: ah, yeah, insurance fraud. a classic!
harry bonding with his guard had "they don't even have dental!" energy and i am SUCH a fan. i know it was all for the con but also give me harry, unable to stop advising people, even when they're actively holding him hostage
parker! on the phone with hardison!!!! ADORABLE
is it just me or was someone else expecting the accountant's name to be something significant? with the way they led up to it, i was waiting for a "sterling" or something else. my sensors were pinging for another tara reveal. i'm still convinced we're gonna get this guy dramatically revealed in the season finale.
a really nice episode! i had a lot of fun with it. and now i want to rewatch the rashamon job, but tbh i ALWAYS want to rewatch the rashamon job.
and that's a wrap! overall, a fun season, i enjoyed it a lot. not as solid as original leverage, but it's the very beginning, and it was put together during a global pandemic, so i'm cutting them some slack. also levar burton is gonna show up at some point. that's a big reason of why i'm cutting them so much slack.
my personal ranking of the episodes is 1x04, 1x06, 1x08, 1x01, 1x02, 1x03, and finally last (and least), 1x07.
what did you guys think of the new season? what was your favorite episode? do you agree with any of my opinions? disagree with any? let me know, please, i'd love to discuss!

i saw you mention in a post about sophie foreshadowing could you talk more about that (when you feel like it, ofc!)? i’m so excited for benedict/sophie but i didn’t catch onto any hints. and i’m a bit disappointed in his storyline with genevieve (who i love as a character but it feels so similar to anthony/siena idk i don’t really see the point of it?) i think it makes sense for the show to (hopefully) explore his sexuality, but i don’t see how ben/genevieve can end any different than anthony/siena. and i have no idea where sophie fits into all this dkskdjdk sorry to ramble but i appreciate your take on the show so much!!
so the foreshadowing i’m talking about is the “oceans apart” scene where Henry tells Benedict he doesn’t understand true romance, about loving someone outside the bounds of society. and while he’s obviously referring to him loving a man, the implied foreshadowing is how Benedict will love Sophie - who’s not “socially acceptable” since she’s a maid. (which is why i feel gross about the scene if we’re sticking to book canon and benedict is straight... we’re comparing a gay relationship to a ‘cinderella’ one. definitely not the same thing.)
now, the issue is... sophie/benedict’s story is basically a slightly less bad version of anthony/siena - the difference being that anthony wants to/has to live up to the responsibilities of being a viscount, whereas benedict doesn’t and therefore has that freedom to marry whoever he wants. like... anthony wants siena to be his mistress! benedict wants sophie to be his mistress! but whereas anthony tried to change siena to fit his dreams (and that’s why they didn’t work out), benedict adjusts to marry sophie.
so really, if sophie wasn’t secretly the daughter of an earl (which frankly i kinda want them to do away that... let sophie not be high born!), their romance is exactly anthony/siena on the show, only with a different ending bc benedict isn’t anthony and sophie isn’t siena.
(also, just throwing this out there, people would complain no matter what so let sophie be nonwhite... east asian would be the least problematic, but i’m staying on my nonwhite kate, sophie, john, michael, gareth, lucy soapbox)
ben/genevieve, meanwhile, in my opinion, was there for some plot reasons: give benedict someone to bang for a bit, bring in the genevieve as a red herring for lady whistledown, and introduce benedict to the “lifestyle” to allow him to realize the benefits of being second-born (which was his primary plotline in s2.) i’m not sure how the show will take their relationship in the future - genevieve is super fun though, so i hope she sticks around as the modiste and they just happen to end on good terms. (i could also see there being a mini-subplot about her getting discovered and getting sent away, and this somehow is a catalyst for benedict to explore his sexuality or be in a low place before meeting sophie.)

I just wanna remind people why you should boycott Disney's new Mulan...
(If what the actress said isn't enough, here's more reason.)
Tumblr media
(Picture says: Disney live-action Mulan was filmed in Xinjiang nearby some Uighur concentration camps. In the credits they openly thank a CCP agency tasked with administering the camps. By the guardian.) Link here
What are the Uighurs?
"The Uighurs are a mostly Muslim Turkic ethnicity who regard themselves as culturally and ethnically close to Central Asian nations. The majority live in Xinjiang, where they number about 11 million people." -BBC link
Tumblr media
(In picture: a group of Uighur men sit drinking and eating.)
What is China doing?
Well let's take a look at what BBC said,
"In July 2020, the UK warned that it may sanction China over the "gross and egregious" human rights abuses reported in Xinjiang.
Asked whether the treatment of the Uighurs met the legal definition of genocide, UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the international community had to be "careful" before making such claims.
But a UN human rights committee found in 2018 there were credible reports that China was holding a million Uighurs in political 'counter-extremism' camps. Committee member Gay McDougall said the Chinese government had "turned the Uighur autonomous region into something that resembles a massive internment camp".
"Human rights charities including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch (HRW) have long accused Beijing of mass imprisonment and torture. Most inmates in the so-called "re-education camps" have never been charged with a crime and have not received any legal representation, the charities say.
"Beijing's shameful denials in the face of well-evidenced UN allegations regarding mass arbitrary detentions in Xinjiang ought to shock the world," HRW China director Sophie Richardson told the BBC at the time.
In the wake of recent reports of mass sterilisation of Uighur women, the Interparliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC), an international cross-party group of politicians, called on the UN to "establish an international, impartial, independent investigation into the situation in the Xinjiang region".
"A body of mounting evidence now exists, alleging mass incarceration, indoctrination, extrajudicial detention, invasive surveillance, forced labor, and the destruction of Uighur cultural sites, including cemeteries, together with other forms of abuse," the statement said."
"Since the 9/11 attacks in the US, China has increasingly portrayed its Uighur separatists as auxiliaries of al-Qaeda, claiming Uighur Muslims have received training in Afghanistan."
"many Uighurs complain that Han Chinese are taking their jobs, and that their farmland has been confiscated for redevelopment. Mass immigration of Han Chinese to Xinjiang has made Uighurs a minority now in the province."
BBC's article can be found here
(In picture, a group of Uighur men stand below a picture of the previous Chinese dictator.)
Tumblr media
Who else is China putting in these "re-education camps" aka Gulags?
"As of 2018, it was estimated that Chinese authorities may have detained hundreds of thousands, perhaps a million, Uyghurs, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz and other ethnic Turkic Muslims, Christians as well as some foreign citizens such as Kazakhstanis, who are being held in these secretive internment camps which are located throughout the region. In May 2018, US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs Randall Schriver said "at least a million but likely closer to three million citizens" were imprisoned in detention centers, which he described as "concentration camps". In August 2018, Guy McDougall, an American representative at the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, said that the committee had received many credible reports that 1 million ethnic Uyghurs in China have been held in "re-education camps". There have also been multiple reports by media outlets, politicians and researchers which compared the camps to the Chinese Cultural Revolution. In 2019 at the United Nations, 54 nations (including China itself) rejected allegations against China and supported China's policies in Xinjiang. In another letter, 23 nations accepted the allegations against China and did not support China's policies." Wikipedia page link here.
Tumblr media
(In picture, a mass protest in China by the opressed.)
Tumblr media
So why should we boycott Disney's Mulan and potentially Disney?
Through the blatant support of the CCP and those who oppress and kill the Muslims and Christians in China, Disney has shown us that they do not care about the brutality of the situation going as far to film a movie that even the Chinese don't like, next to a place that is killing thousands. If this isn't enough to deter you from supporting this movie, I don't know what is.
We the people have the power to show that we can stop companies from allowing brutality to happen. We have the power to deter them.
So let's do it.
Tumblr media
What can we do?
Tumblr media
Well the first thing you can do is not watch Mulan, even if you have Disney+, the more views the more likely they will not learn the lesson.
You can also support and donate to these organizations:
Uyghur Human Rights Project
"The Uyghur Human Rights Project promotes the rights of the Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslim peoples in East Turkistan, referred to by the Chinese government as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, through research-based advocacy. It publishes  reports and analysis in English and Chinese to defend Uyghurs’ civil, political, social, cultural, and economic rights according to international human rights standards. "
You can find them here.
Tumblr media
Save Uighur
"The Save Uighur Campaign is an educational and advocacy project aimed at raising public awareness and resolve to help the Uighur people. The project is a concerted effort to tie media exposure, public relations, and government action together into a single strategy aimed at the liberation of the Uighurs from the oppression they face at the hands of the Chinese government."
You can support them here.
Tumblr media
The Uyghur American Association
"The Uyghur American Association (UAA) is based in Washington, DC and is a tax-exempt, non-profit membership organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Tax Code. UAA works to promote human rights and democracy for Uyghurs, as well as to protect and promote Uyghur culture in East Turkistan and worldwide."
You can find them here
Tumblr media
Together we can do this and end China's oppression!
