In Kazakhstan lives an antelope that wouldn’t look out of place on the set of Star Wars. Saiga and their gloriously wibbly noses are one of the planet’s most remarkable species, but poaching and mass die off events saw their numbers crash. In 2024, however, the Earthshot Prize awarded an ecosystem restoration effort that’s enabled the saiga antelope population to recover from 40,000 to 2.8 million in the last 20 years.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter at The Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit → September 24 2024
The Earthshot Prize is an environmental challenge that catalyzes urgent optimism & action by discovering, accelerating, awarding, spotlighting & scaling solutions to repair & regenerate the planet. The summit will convene business leaders, philanthropists, investors and government leaders alongside Earthshot Prize Finalists and Winners to strengthen the power of the global Earthshot community.
Sophie talked about her production Salt of the Earth that premiered recently in Venice, "an act of story-telling created through deep collaboration with scientists, activists and local initiatives" that "shone a light on an overlooked and disregarded but vital ecosystem: salt marshes."
Benedict talked about supporting Green Rider, a campaign and grassroots union network of creatives campaigning for a fairer, more sustainable, eco-friendly film industry. Green Rider is developing strong examples of how cast can supercharge climate action through the industry and create a blueprint that others can easily follow.

"You were by my side"
Tumblr media
9th November 2024.
“Enough” Catherine giggled as she finally ‘escaped’ from her husband's arms “We must get ready now or we'll be late, Mr. Wales”.
William grinned as he watched her wearing her shirt in a rush, saying “I wouldn't mind”.
As she closed the bathroom door and looked at her reflection in the mirror, the princess blushed like a teenage girl. Since her husband's return from South Africa where he attended Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony, they were lost in their own world, thankful that their children were at school most of the time.
As she checked her phone, she saw a text message from her stylist sent 30 minutes earlier “Where are you, Catherine? It's time to choose your dress”.
She sighed and called her husband “I am already late” she said, showing him a text message but William chuckled “I am sure that Natalie will understand everything”. Catherine rolled her eyes and brushed her hair a little before going to the dressing room.
~
“I am sorry, Natalie. I didn't see your message earlier” She said and felt embarrassed but Natalie nodded as she said “It's alright. We still have some time left”
“Yes.. So I obviously need a black outfit” Catherine took a sip of water and smiled before looking through her clothes “What about a coat dress? I haven't worn one in so long, right?”
“Yes, that's true” Natalie nodded “You always look beautiful in them”
“William says the same thing. It is a shame that he did not listen to my advices when it came to his Earthshot ceremony outfit though”
Natalie chuckled a little “Did you scold him?”
“I.. I wanted to, a couple of times actually but.. but he stopped me” Catherine tried not to blush as she remembered.
~~
7th November 2024. The prince of Wales was on his way home, smiling at the thought of seeing his wife and children again.
As soon as he entered the house, he expected Catherine to run towards him and her kiss but none of that happened. Instead, she stood in front of him with her phone and a picture of his Earthshot Prize ceremony outfit on the screen. “What was that?” she asked and rolled her eyes a little “I thought you already had even a small sense of fashion style in yourself, but it seems..”
“That is how you greet your husband after he was away on another continent for three days, Mrs. Wales?” William teased her as he put his luggage on the floor.
“This is what you deserve for..” she tried to say but William approached her, took her phone away from her and lifted her up in his arms. Catherine rolled her eyes playfully and asked “Don’t you have a gift for me? I’ve seen pictures and you were looking through some earrings, weren’t you?”
“I’ve got a gift for you but it is hidden inside the luggage, so maybe let us start with a kiss first?” he smirked
“First, you need to take shower” Catherine said “And one kiss won’t solve anything”
“Who told you it’ll be just one kiss?” William raised his eyebrows and pressed his lips on hers as he walked towards the bathroom.
~~
9th November 2024.
“Shall I try on these coats finally?” The princess of Wales cleared her throat. Her final choice was one of those designed by Catherine Walker.
“What about your hair?” Natalie asked
“Natural” Kate smiled a little “But pulled to one of the sides perhaps. As for makeup..” she seemed lost in thoughts for a moment
“Yes? What's your idea?”
“I thought about something similar to my 2011-2012 style, but I am not certain that it's a good choice”
“A perfect one I'd say” Natalie smiled “Do I need to help you? I think you're best at it”
“I’ll do that myself but you can stay here, that way we'll have more time for a conversation”.
They continued to talk for at least twenty minutes, and soon William waited for his wife in the corner of the dressing room.
Kate discreetly chuckled when she finally noticed him, thanked Natalie for help, and then approached her husband.
“You were supposed to wait outside, not listen to my conversations, Mr. Wales”
“I wasn't listening. You finished it a minute ago and then I came here”
“But until you entered the room you were listening indeed, right?” She teased him
“Maybe a little bit. Your last words were something about George's school, yes?”
“Yes, but earlier there was also something that Nat reminded me of”
“What is it?’ William asked and looked at his wife's black dress
“I still had no time to scold you for that Earthshot outfit” she replied
“Why do I need to be scolded?” He asked and approached her “I thought it was decent and, in case you had to say anything else, my gift erased the problem”
“Seaweed earrings were perfect, but not enough to make me forget about that outfit”
William sighed, pretended to feel annoyed “You are rude sometimes, you know?”
Catherine chuckled and was then fixing her hair yet. After a few seconds of looking at her husband, she said “Now that I think about it, it’s actually good”
“What do you mean? It's good that I refused to listen to my wife?”
The princess nodded as their eyes met “This time, yes. At least you felt comfortable in that style and most importantly, the other women at the ceremony were not obsessed with you”
“Yes, though it seemed to me they were making fun of my trainers” William chuckled
“There's a rule from now, Mr. Wales” his wife teased again “You can wear whatever you want for those ‘glamorous’ outings without me, even the most casual clothes. However, when I join you, for example at the 2025 Earthshot Awards ceremony, you need to be the best version of yourself” she smirked and blinked flirtatiously before heading towards the car. She looked back and saw that her husband was observing her from a distance.
“Are you going or not, Mr. Wales?” she asked, smiling innocently.
~~
On the way to the Royal Albert Hall, they were not talking at all but it was not an uncomfortable silence. As they were standing at the entrance, William's hand was on his wife's back almost all the time. At one point, the princess’ emotions were visible as she was holding back her tears. After it ended and she and William left the building, Catherine whispered “I thought I will never be able to be here again but it's happening and I.. I guess I just feel overwhelmed now” she murmured.
William kissed her on the hair and told the driver to take them home.
~
As Catherine settled in her pyjamas and sat down on the bed, her husband brought her a cup of tea. She smiled a little and said “I made you feel worried, didn't I? We had such a perfect two days and then there I was: almost crying, reminiscing about my illness, the possibility of me dying and--..”
“Hsshh..” William interrupted as he sat down beside her “Don't say anything about it again. It is over now and you're going to be fine”.
Catherine closed her eyes as she whispered “Thank you for helping me, my William”
He looked at her face and sighed “How did I help? I wish I could do more for you”
“You were by my side, which was everything. I mean it with all my heart. It truly was everything, and still is” Catherine whispered, her eyes tearful once more but she hid it by closing her eyes and began to drink tea. William was speechless for a moment, then he gently squeezed her hand and wanted to say something but Catherine pressed her lips on his and he deepened that kiss. It wasn't one of passionate kisses which they often shared for the last two days, but instead one full of pure love.
“Aren't you going to argue about my Earthshot outfit anymore?” William teased his wife after a few moments
“No, at least not tonight” Catherine tried not to giggle before kissing him on the lips again.

30 AUGUST 2024: Richard Kay, Daily Mail, "The inside story of Harry's 'greatly significant' trip home revealed by RICHARD KAY... and why it proves where his REAL loyalties lie" [archive link]
Each year, since Diana’s passing in 1997, Harry and William have made a pilgrimage to their mother’s grave close to the anniversary of her death. They used to do so together, but in recent years have done so apart. That this year they were together again over the week of their mother’s anniversary is deeply symbolic. Harry would have known this before choosing to attend the memorial. It appears crystal clear to me that he is finally ready for rapprochement.
31 AUGUST 2024: Charlotte Griffiths & Ian Gallagher, Daily Mail, "Duke of Sussex asks former aides to help plot RETURN from his US exile in first stage of 'rehabilitation' strategy: Prince's friends vow to help smooth path back and dub it 'Operation Bring Harry In From The Cold'" [archive link]
At least one of the advisers approached by Harry is a trusted figure 'from the old school' known for loyalty and discretion. One friend has already devised a strategy for how Harry might begin moving in UK circles again – even carrying out 'very low-key royal duties' – although the Duke is said to be open to ideas from many sources. A source said the friend 'believes if Harry comes back to the UK with zero fuss, and does zero publicity and attends very mundane events, he could prove himself and win over the British public again.

The Princess of Wales has taken a step back from her royal duties since news of her cancer diagnosis, so one can only imagine Kirsty Kerr's amazement when she received a special letter on behalf of the future Queen just two weeks ago. Kirsty, whose six-year-old daughter Isla has coeliac disease, reached out to Her Royal Highness back in December after reading a statement from the Princess's Shaping Us campaign, focusing on children's mental health. [...] Following her letter, Kirsty received a thoughtful response from Kate's office.

"Will Kate return to public life soon? Hopes for an autumn comeback" [archive link]
However, after a restful summer spent with the Prince of Wales and their three children at Anmer Hall, their home in Norfolk, the princess is beginning to think about the months ahead. There is no set date for her return to public life, nor any engagements inked into her diary, and Kate will not accompany William to Cape Town in early November for this year’s Earthshot Prize awards. But if she continues to have more “good days”, it is understood she has set her sights on “potentially” joining the King and the royal family at the Cenotaph for the National Service of Remembrance on November 10.

The Telegraph, "Taxpayers fund study of monarchy in Caribbean that will be ‘valuable for agitators’" [archive link]
British taxpayers have footed an £800,000 bill for a study on the monarchy’s future in the Caribbean that claims to be of “immense value” to activists “agitating” for its abolition. The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) has given The Visible Crown, which is examining the legacy of the late Queen in the West Indies, £825,417 in taxpayer funding. The research project’s website claims it will be “of immense value to academics, but also to all those engaged with, advising on or agitating for constitutional reform in the Caribbean, and in the Commonwealth realms more generally”. The principal investigator of the study claimed last year that Britain’s monarchy “sustains white inherited privilege”.
08 SEPTEMBER 2024: Hello! magazine, "Prince William and Princess Kate hire additional support as the Princess of Wales' return details revealed" [archive link]
As posting on their website notes that the royal couple is hiring a senior communications officer. The description reads: "The successful candidate will lead on communications plans for Their Royal Highnesses' engagements and support on the delivery of communications strategies to promote their key projects.  The role will also involve responding to media enquiries on matters related to The Prince and Princess and their family."  Travel between royal residences in the UK and travel abroad is required for the full-time role, although it will usually be based at Kensington Palace. The candidate must also be able to "handle sensitive information with tact and discretion at all times".
Newsweek, James-Crawford Smith, "Princess Kate's 6-Month Cancer Journey, So Far" [archive link]
The royal mother of three, stepped out of the public eye in January to undergo abdominal surgery which was later linked to a cancer diagnosis, necessitating a course of "preventive chemotherapy." During this time, Kate has remained mainly behind palace walls, making positive progress, but still undergoing the challenging treatment. Here, Newsweek takes a look at Kate's cancer journey so far, six months after her chemotherapy treatment began.
NY Post, "Kate Middleton is plotting her return to public life amid cancer battle — but still has ‘a long journey to recovery’" [archive link]
But The Times reported that Middleton and her advisors are planning possible public engagements on her “good days” over the next few months. Specifically, Middleton “potentially” may join her father-in-law, King Charles III, who also has cancer, and the royal family at the Cenotaph for the National Service of Remembrance on November 10.

A message from Catherine, The Princess of Wales
As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment. The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.
The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you. With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything.
This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved.
Doing what I can to stay cancer free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes.
I am however looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can.
Despite all that has gone before I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life.
William and I are so grateful for the support we have received and have drawn great strength from all those who are helping us at this time. Everyone’s kindness, empathy and compassion has been truly humbling.
To all those who are continuing their own cancer journey – I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand. Out of darkness, can come light, so let that light shine bright.

Robbie Collin, The Telegraph, "The films that inspired the royal home movie" [archive link]
Many of us remember when important statements from the Royal family were faxed direct to Fleet Street’s newsrooms – or, in exceptional circumstances, read aloud at the end of palace driveways for the cameras. This week, however, bore witness to a new mode of delivery: an impressionistic short film harking back to the glory days of Merchant Ivory. Howards End, The Remains of the Day, A Room with a View: three elegant literary adaptations from the late 1980s and early 90s, whose refined surfaces masked the deep currents of feeling underneath. Well, to announce the news that the Princess of Wales had completed her chemotherapy, we essentially got a three-minute revival of the style in home movie form.

Critique of Kate's announcement video:
Tumblr media
Polly Hudson, The Mirror, "Kate Middleton's cancer airbrushing doesn't reflect brutality of ordinary people's chemotherapy"
But it feels important to take a moment to consider those who may feel differently. Those for whom this deeply unrealistic view of cancer treatment will be incredibly jarring, to say the least. Unlike that infamous Mother's Day photo, this really matters. Airbrushing out the dark and only showing the light is digitally altering the truth. As anyone who has ever witnessed someone going through chemo will know, it's the polar opposite of frolicking in a sunlit meadow. An oncologist treating a family member of mine once described it as something that “nearly kills them, to try and save their life.” Kate hasn’t set herself up as a poster child for all cancer patients, and to some extent she can’t win no matter what she does – but there is a real disconnect between the glossy, perfect aesthetic portrayed in the three minute film, and the brutal reality for the thousands of British people currently being treated for cancer.
11 SEPTEMBER 2024: Hannah Furness, The Telegraph, "Why the Princess of Wales’s public role may never be the same again" [archive link]
This was not a video filmed by committee, workshopped by Kensington Palace aides and edited with the help of focus groups. It was, sources said, a “creative outlet” for the Princess, who has chosen to take control of her own message in a public life which has seen her cede so much. “This is her,” says a friend. The Princess is now, they say, working out what is right for her future, and that of her family. [...] Other questions, seasoned royal observers point out, remain - in particular, the role the Princess envisages playing in public life in the future. “My path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes,” the Princess says. “I am however looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can.” What that will look like is uncertain. Save for two key appearances – Remembrance Sunday and her annual carol concert at Westminster Abbey, which will take place unless her health changes – the rest of her diary over the coming months is unconfirmed for obvious reasons, to allow for cancellations without causing alarm.

Video messages and social media posts are all ways she could still be in touch and give her support to her causes, while still being there for her children. "In 12 or so years, when Catherine's full recovery will hopefully be well-established, the children will probably all be off into further education, and then she can concentrate more on her work... But until she feels comfortable taking on more, we must be patient. "We should spare a thought for those children. Yes, I know they have been born into huge privilege, but they have a grandfather with cancer, a grandmother who was killed before they were born, a mother the centre of their world who has been made vulnerable by this sledgehammer of a disease, and a dad who is battling all sorts of emotions while trying to do the best for his family and his country. Kate Middleton Paired Heirloom With High-Street Jewels At The Festival of Remembrance Kate Middleton attended the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday evening. As usual, the Princess of Wales carefully selected her attire to reflect the gravity and solemnity of the occasion. She paired an elegant black coat dress by Alexander McQueen with pearl jewellery—the pearls, long associated with mourning and remembrance, were an elegant finishing touch for her ensemble. I also think it’s interesting that she mixed heirloom (the Collingwood earrings, inherited from Princess Diana) with high-street (the Monica Vinader necklace, available widely!) This is the Princess’s 10th appearance at the Festival of Remembrance, she’s attended annually since 2015. (The festival didn’t take place in 2020 due to the pandemic.) As in previous years, Kate attended alongside her husband, the Prince of Wales. They both joined other senior royals. King Charles attended alone, as Queen Camilla stayed home due to a seasonal chest infection. Buckingham Palace confirmed the Queen would be marking the occasion privately, choosing to keep away to “protect others from potential risk.” Hosted by Adrian Lester, the 2024 Festival of Remembrance honoured the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of the Armed Forces. The event blended performance, tribute, and reflection to highlight the service and dedication of both veterans and active-duty members. This year’s festival carried special significance, marking the 80th anniversary of key World War II events in 1944. Anniversary tributes recognised those who served on D-Day, in the Normandy campaign, and in battles such as Monte Cassino, Kohima, and Imphal, with veterans from these campaigns invited to the Royal Albert Hall. The festival also observed a more recent milestone—ten years since UK forces concluded combat operations in Afghanistan. The Royal Air Force’s training of Ukrainian counterparts was also highlighted during the evening, underscoring ongoing international support efforts. Additionally, the Service Children’s Community Choir performed, celebrating the resilience of military families who support those on active duty. The program included performances from Sir Tom Jones, Jack Savoretti, Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha, Samantha Barks, Alexandra Burke (pictured), and Jake Isaac, alongside stirring musical displays from the Central Band of the Royal Air Force and the Bands of HM Royal Marines. The ceremony opened with the traditional procession of the Royal British Legion standards and the Pensioners of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Veterans and families shared personal stories of service and sacrifice, filling the hall with memories and reflections on duty. The evening concluded with the customary poppy drop, as thousands of petals descended from the Royal Albert Hall’s roof, blanketing the audience. Each petal represented a life lost in conflict, and the moment was marked by a two-minute silence to reflect on the sacrifices made in service. The Festival marked another step in the Princess of Wales’s return to royal duties following her recent cancer treatment—generally seen as a positive move since she announced the completion of her preventative chemotherapy in September. Reflecting on the challenges of 2024, Prince William shared heartfelt thoughts at a press reception for the Earthshot Prize Awards earlier this week. “It’s been the hardest year of my life,” he admitted. “I’m so proud of my wife, and I’m proud of my father, for the strength they’ve shown. But from a family perspective, it’s been brutal.” Let’s take a look at Kate’s outfit in more detail now. Kate’s outfit: Kate looked sensational. She wore a black tailored coat dress with sharp lapels, finished with metallic double-breasted buttons. The look perfectly captured the sombre tone of the evening while reflecting the Princess’s sophisticated style. I think the Princess is wearing an Alexander McQueen coatdress. It’s very similar to the one she wore to the late Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022: I’d originally assumed Kate had the ‘funeral’ coat dress altered (namely swapping the buttons), but I’m coming around to Susan’s line of thinking now, that it’s a second coat dress. Susan notes the coat looks like it’s crafted from a different fabric and that the skirt, at the waist, pleats ‘differently.’ Kate is known for upcycling and altering older outfits, but in this case, I think she’s had two similar coats made in different fabric weights. The second black coat is incredibly similar to the one Kate wore at Trooping in 2022 and at the G7 events at the Eden Project in 2021. Overall verdict of Kate’s style at the Festival of Remembrance? Lovely, feminine and regal. The simple lines and elegant shape of the coat were perfect on the Princess. Plus, her hair was fantastic, curled and swept to the side. (She wore it in the same style at the Royal Variety Performance in 2021 and I loved it then too). GET THE LOOK – I found a couple of coats that tick some boxes for me. The Juliette Crepe Coat in Navy by Phase 8: And the Sandra Swing Midi Coat in Black by Phase 8 at John Lewis: Let’s look at Kate’s handbag next. It’s the Classic Mini Flap Bag by Chanel. The black quilted bag lent an element of Parisian chic to the otherwise minimalist look. The Classic Mini Flap Bag is a compact version of the brand’s larger, iconic Classic Flap Bag. It’s crafted from luxurious lambskin leather and features the signature diamond quilting throughout. The bag features a flap front closure finished with the brand’s signature interlocking CC logo in gold-tone metal. The bag also has a mixed gold-tone metal and black leather chain, which Kate doesn’t use. The Princess often carries her bags in hand, rather than using the straps. We first spotted the Princess with the bag about a year ago, in France, at the Rugby World Cup 2023 Quarter Final. As I mentioned earlier in the post, Kate accessorised her look with both heirloom and high-street pearls at the Festival of Remembrance. Which I love. She paired Princess Diana’s famous “Collingwood” earrings with her Monica Vinader “Nura Pearl” pendant. The former are priceless pearl and diamond drops given to the late Princess by the British jewellery company Collingwood as a wedding present in 1981. The latter is a contemporary piece that’s affordable and widely available from a popular British jewellery store! Talk about a contrast! The Collingwood earrings feature a timeless and elegant design: each earring has a round pearl drop suspended from a diamond-studded cluster. Princess Diana often wore the earrings in public, pairing them with memorable outfits. After her passing, the earrings were passed down to William. Kate now wears them to royal events on a regular basis. The pearl necklace is part of Monica Vinader’s Nura collection, inspired by organic, oceanic forms. It’s a lovely piece that features a single, beautiful freshwater pearl suspended from a delicate chain, making it a minimalist yet elegant accessory. The chain is available in gold vermeil or sterling silver, allowing wearers to choose a finish that best matches their style. Kate wears the gold. Kate’s worn the necklace on three other occasions since its debut in 2022. Monica Vinader is known for its dedication to sustainable practices, for using recycled metals and for using ethically sourced stones. It looks like the Princess is wearing her Jimmy Choo Romy heels in black velvet. The Romy 100 court shoes feature a pointed toe and a 100mm heel. Kate’s worn the pumps on four other occasions, largely evening events, debuting them at the 2018 Festival of Remembrance. Need these shoes?  You’re in luck. Jimmy Choo will make them for you.  Simply use their ‘made-to-order’ web page and select the Romy style. Choose the 100mm heel height, set the ‘fabric’ material and ‘velvet’ and click ‘black’ and you’ve recreated the exact shoe! The shoe will be created and shipped to you in 12 weeks.  The custom-made velvet pumps cost £895 in the UK and $1,175 in the USA.  (And of course, Jimmy Choo works with other currencies and locations, too.) Let’s finish up by looking at Kate’s brooch now. The Princess re-wore the military brooch she debuted at last year’s National Service of Remembrance (pictured below). The piece signifies her role as Commodore-in-Chief of The Fleet Air Arm—a new role given to her by King Charles back in August 2023. The item features pilot wings, surmounted by a crown and laurel leaves that encircle an anchor. Final point of interest: Kate re-wore her engagement ring at Saturday’s Festival of Remembrance. The Princess hadn’t been spotted with the sparkling jewel since 2023.
