Matthew Dear - Bunny @matthewdear @ghostly I’m going to be real with you here, I love pretty much everything Matthew Dear has ever put out. He’s unique sounding, he’s a master at his instruments and equipment, he’s got a super interesting sounding voice (especially in octave harmony!) and also he’s captivating. That last part might be subjective, though. His past albums “Beams” and “Black City” were both front-to-back masterpieces of every sub-type of house (see also: Detroit!) that I care about and both of them get played in HEAVY rotation at our place. I love “Asa Breed” for what it is, and often get lost in it too, but I think he really found his stride in the LP format with Beams (but please don’t hate me if you disagree, I can probably see your perspective). I’ve hyped his newest release, “Bunny”, way too much for way too long and now that it’s out and I’ve spun it several times, I’ve come to love it as something sort of new and fresh from him. Sure, I wanted more dancefloor crushers like “Get the Rhyme Right” and “Earthforms” and there are certainly some total earworms on this album. But unlike the other albums I’ve mentioned and vigorously defend, this one seems to have even more of a theme beyond perfectly executed modern dance music by way of classic house technique. This album almost sounds sad at times, if you’ll believe it. This is what happens when a super talented artist dares to take their comfort zone of instruments and approach and leave it at home while they go out and explore what else is possible.
