How to implement an Anti-Bias Curriculum in Early Childhood Education
An anti-bias curriculum is modelled on teaching children the importance and necessity to understand, identify and be accepting of differences. Our curriculum discusses and educates children about diverse perspectives and experiences in order to understand how differences can be overcome to create a more inclusive environment in the classroom and beyond. The foundation of an anti-bias curriculum is rooted in the confrontation and prevention of any form of prejudice, stereotyping, and injustices both in and out of the classroom.
In the hopes of framing a successful anti-bias curriculum, it is important to learn about biases and how they are inculcated in children. Promoting the importance of value-based principles ⎯ which are targeted towards recognizing and addressing existing differences, an anti-bias curriculum is geared towards building an atmosphere that encourages self-identity development. The overcoming of biases requires problem-solving and critical thinking skills of children and adults alike. Therefore, it is important to instill in preschool children a sense of self-awareness and pride in who they are and where they come from, without feeling morally superior to one another.
Understanding the Implicit Nature of Racial Preferences in Children
According to the studies conducted by York University’s Faculty of Health under Jennifer Steele and her former PhD student Amanda Williams currently at the University of Bristol, children show that implicit racial preferences can develop from an early age.
Steele suggests that rather than interventions, children should be encouraged to see members of other groups positively. She stresses the importance of classroom teachers promoting the benefits of diversity and introducing children to role models and concepts from diverse backgrounds. Children are aware of race from a young age, hence implementing a colour-blind approach or pretending that racial preference does not exist is not the recommended way to go about things.
How To Implement an Anti-Bias Curriculum?
Understanding your students, their backgrounds, and families is the first step towards trying to establish an anti-bias curriculum. The implementation of an equitable environment within the classroom and teaching students the difference between equality, equity, and justice is also an important way of establishing an anti-bias environment in the classroom and beyond it.
Understanding before implementing is something we stress here in our Aurora classrooms. Children ought to be made aware of concepts like equity for them to properly comprehend the importance of an anti-bias curriculum.
If you are looking to establish a bias-free environment then it should reflect in every single aspect of your classroom. Children are very observant and notice the slightest details. Books, posters, paintings, and toys for instance should reflect diversity and people from various backgrounds in a positive light. Preschoolers are very impressionable and these things can have a lasting impact on them.
Before addressing the existing biases in your current environment, it is essential to address your own biases with an open mind. At Aurora, we continuously reflect on our approaches and attitudes and recognise any implicit biases we may have.
Certain biases can be deep-rooted and integrated within our daily lives that they may not be so easily identifiable Therefore, as educators, it is imperative to have open-minded discussions with your students to find out what their opinions are about diversity when it comes to socio-economic status, cultural background, race, and differing abilities. The method of discussion helps us identify particular qualities students may have as a result of unconsciously stereotyping or observing such behaviour from other adults and children. As minuscule as these matters may seem, they can have serious repercussions if they are not supported early on.
To establish an equitable classroom environment, educators must focus on a play-based approach to early learning that will reinforce the idea of egalitarianism. The concept of fair treatment can be introduced through learning-through-play means. Our centres are proudly enriched with multiculturalism and diversity in many ways, and our children will naturally learn to respect and be fair to their peers and educators through the fun and bonding activities they participate in together.
According to a study conducted in ethnically and racially diverse childcare centres, children tend to use racial categories to include and exclude their peers in several activities. They also use race and colour to exercise dominance over their classmates. It is the teacher’s role to not only identify and address biases but also, make sure that the students learn from their experiences in the classroom and always be inclusive.
Parents and teachers need to work together to make sure our children are following the right path and working towards being a good member of the community. Organising weekly or monthly meetings between educators and parents is important so they are on the same page in regards to the care of their child. Additionally, simple tools like infographics and newsletters can help keep parents informed and involved on common behaviour in childcare environments and how they can be helped . Parents need to be aware of the prevalence of biases in children and need to be addressing these biases at home as well as doing so will help their child develop in the best way.
We always listen to children and the concerns they might haveto be able to provide the support they need if they are victims of discrimination or vice versa.
Conclusion
We, at Aurora Early Childhood Center, realise that children have a working understanding of the differences in race, colour, gender, and abilities from a very young age. By addressing any form of discrimination and establishing an anti-bias curriculum, we can redirect the understanding of these key concepts in a positive direction. The establishment of equity in our classrooms is our key concern and what our teachers aim at through our unique and inclusive curriculum. Our centres are open to visits and consultations for parents who would like an in-depth understanding of our curriculum and pedagogy.

You probably know what all work and no play did to Jack, he turned out to be a dull boy! Did you know that there’s scientific evidence that play is an essential part of learning? Education and learning play an important part in shaping children in the early years of their lives. But kids don’t always look forward to learning opportunities as something they can enjoy. What if you make their learning time fun? Then you’ll have their full attention!
