Right to Repair Therapy

For me, right to to repair isn't just about ewaste, and preventing corporate gouging.

It's about mental health. Being able to fix your gadgets is therapeutic. Empowering. Good for the soul.

Today I fixed my expensive bluetooth earbuds. Their batteries couldn't hold a charge for a full hour. (Turns out this was due to a botched firmware update and totally Sony's fault!)

This is the guide I used:

We tried a course of new firmware but the patients continued to deteriorate (as the specialist predicted.) Surgical intervention was unavoidable. The patients are currently convalescing in the charging dock. The procedure was smooth and they will only have minor scars, but a full recovery cannot be guaranteed until they reach full power and take one last course of software updates.

Surgery was successful. The seams won’t be the same ever. But it’s only noticeable if I look for it.

In a world full of complex technology it's easy to feel small and helpless. And maybe I'm too much of an idealist, but I think that if everyone could experience the joy of fixing or modifying a gadget now and then we'd all be a little more open minded, a little more daring. A little harder to push around.

Ear protection!! It's so important for a lot of autistics. Mainly for us. We need ear protection 24/7 but at times we don't think we need them, and we regret it after.. We get overstimulated quickly. But the mornings are so hectic we forget our ear protection, whether it's our headphones or earplugs, and it was bad. This is your reminder. Ear protection protects us. It protects you. It helps us. Someone gave me those Bluetooth elf ear buds ages ago and I finally charged them up and used them today! They're really fun, I feel like they look better than the ear buds (which I think look kinda silly, just floating in your ear) and they work great so far.

(I haven't tried them for running, just walking so far, but they're pretty secure since they loop over your ears)

My first day back skating after having 2 weeks off.

I got to run through the bulk of what I know and nothing but sit spin has gone noticeably backwards.

I even got out one decent scratch spin. So that's nice. It felt good to be back out on the ice.

Also tested out some new sport ear buds i bought in Japan. They didn't fall out but the blue tooth connection wasn't great.

Wearing ear protection 24/7 is okay. It's valid. If you need it, you need it. If you want to, do it. We wear ours pretty much all day every day. and that's okay.

The idea of being without music for longer than necessary was so awful, that I needed to immediately buy a new pair of ear buds when I realised I'd left mine at home

These are an upgrade to my current ear buds.

I really like my current ones, but they've had a few annoying issues since I got them. And now more issues are coming up.

I was going to get a straight replacement, but I changed my mind when I found out the new model is out. And while they had issues, they still had the best set of features I wanted for the price I wanted. I'm really keen on having physical buttons, and I like the general design.

So far so good though, they sound good. I like that they tell you the charge level on both the earpieces, and the case.

The case is a lot smaller than the older one. I got black because I was impatient, and didn't want to wait a few more days to get an unusual colour.

I need to run with them though, and I can do a direct comparison between the 2 models.
