As an homage to Eddie Van Halen, Journey guitarist Neal Schon has shared a video of himself freestyling on an EVH Striped Series guitar.
"A little tribute to Ed," Schon posted to Instagram. "It was so amazing to be on Van Halen's first tour with him. I watched him annihilate every single night and was grateful I didn't have to follow him."
Schon first witnessed Eddie's jaw-dropping skills on the guitar in 1978 when Van Halen was the supporting act for Journey while on the band's Infinity tour.

Fun fact : Eddie Van Halen once drove a tank through Beverly Hills to Fred Durst's house and pulled a gun on him.
Durst reportedly met Van Halen at a party, during which a record-label executive suggested they team up together. As documented by Bennett, the Limp Bizkit vocalist was thrilled by the idea, and said: "That would be hilarious. The greatest guitar player ever plays with the worst band ever". In response, Van Halen said “Fuck it, let’s jam.” The pair met up at Durst's house in Beverly Hills and began jamming, although EVH soon found himself disappointed, and described the experience as like "being a scholar amongst kindergartners". Apparently, the session soon turned into a drug-orientated escapade, as the band started to smoke weed. As he wasn't a fan of the drug, Halen shortly left the jam, and accidentally left his musical equipment, such as his guitars and amps, behind him. The next day, the guitarist tried to contact Durst to retrieve his belongings, but was ignored, which he found upsetting. After waiting another 24 hours, Halen decided to fetch his gear himself, with added precautions to make sure he wouldn't leave empty handed.  In his book, Bennett writes: “Eddie once bought an assault vehicle from a military auction. It has a shine gun mount on the back and is not legal. Eddie drove that assault vehicle through L.A., into Beverly Hills, then parked and left it running on the front lawn of the house Limp Bizkit was rehearsing in.  "He got out wearing no shirt, his hair in a Samurai bun on top of his head, his jeans held up with a strand of rope and combat boots held together by duct tape. And he had a gun in his hand.” Retelling the moment from Van Halen's perspective, he continues, “'That asshole answered the door. I put my gun to that stupid fucking red hat of his, and I said, ‘Where’s my shit, motherfucker?’ That fucking guy just turned to one of his employees and starts yelling at him to grab my shit...' "Eddie Van Halen stood on the front lawn of a residential home in Beverly Hills in broad daylight, smoking a cigarette while holding a gun on Fred Durst as he went back and forth from the house to the assault vehicle, lugging amps and guitars.”
from Louder Sound magazine. best thing I've read all day.

🎸 Welcome to my video! 🎸
Today, I’m comparing two EVH 5150 M1 amps: one with 6L6 tubes (2015) and one with EL34 tubes (2018). Using a Schecter Elite SLS 7-string and Mesa Boogie IR in a Torpedo, I’ve matched the settings on both amps.

EVH has updated its MIJ Series with the Signature Wolfgang electric guitar – a model that finds itself between the premium USA and affordable Mexican-made iterations of the Wolfgang template.
youtube
But this version of Eddie Van Halen's signature guitar is not only notable for its middle-ground price bracket and its faithful spec sheet – its Japanese origins are also significant.
Japan is, after all, a country whose guitar-building exploits are closely linked with Eddie Van Halen, who throughout his career played numerous models that were built in the Fujigen factory.
Examples of Van Halen's own assortment of Japanese-built guitars include his bolt-on Flying V and lbanez destroyer, as well as an assortment of Japanese Strats.
This MIJ Wolfgang, then, takes on an even greater layer of meaning for Van Halen fans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Arriving in the same classic Ivory and Stealth Black colorways found on the USA Edward Van Halen Signature, the MIJ model also features an identical basswood body with Big Leaf maple top, as well as a bolt-on quartersawn maple neck.
The neck profile, as was the case with the USA six-strings, has been crafted to Van Halen’s exacting specifications, and is complemented with a 12”-16” compound radius ebony fingerboard that flashes 22 stainless steel frets.
It’s worth noting the Stealth Black version is adorned with pearloid dot inlays, while the Ivory variant opts for pearloid block inlays.
Other direct similarities to the top-of-the-line Wolfgang include the EVH-branded Floyd Rose locking tremolo with EVH D-Tuna, R2 locking nut, heel-mount truss rod wheel and 25.5” scale length.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the electronics department, EVH Wolfgang Alnico 2 bridge and Alnico 3 neck humbuckers are wired to a three-way toggle switch and a kill switch. The volume control features a low-friction pot and treble bleed circuit, while the tone knob has a high-friction pot to avoid accidental rolls.
The MIJ Wolfgangs have been a long time coming, after EVH co-runner Matt Bruck told Guitar World of the brand’s plans to reignite its Japanese links.
“Ed’s history with Japanese guitars predates Van Halen’s records,” Bruck said at the time. “He played a bolt-on Flying V and an Ibanez Destroyer during the club days, which were both built by Fujigen. People also don’t know that Ed did a lot of experiments on Japanese Strats before and after the first record.”
“We’re super-excited to do something with Fujigen and for the Japanese market. People in America and around the world will be able to access those models, too.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As mentioned above, the MIJ Signature Wolfgang sits between the $4k USA model and $750 Mexican version, and will be available for $2,699.

Guitars and Guitarists From The Headspace Of Steve Vai
If you’re into guitar based music?
Here’s is a good read.
After you read the article in the first link, you gotta click "next" at the top of the page to go thru his 10 choices
https://www.musicradar.com/news/steve-vai-these-are-the-guitarists-that-blew-my-mind
I remember buying Flex-able (his indie solo debut) on cassette at a record store while in Uni.
Still have it.
He's sofa king good at playing amaze balls shit that is still (mostly) accessible (unlike a lotta jazz fusion stuff which leaves me cold).
I remember learning about Alan Holdsworth in late 80s because EVH worshipped him.
He also had a signature guitar built and sold by Carvin, who I got my Red Skully guitar and all my PA gear from so that also put Holdsworth on my radar.
Check this article with Vai discussing Holdsworth
https://www.guitarworld.com/artists/steve-vai-his-favorite-guitarist-its-hard-realize-how-great-he
The live clip is pretty amazing.
As was the case in the 90s, still doesn't do much for me but towards the last 3rd it really got me when they went from wankfest to something melodic and slower that my ear can grab on to.
If both Vai and Eddie said he played beyond what they could comprehend, I don't feel quite so dim.....
And this is Vai's 5 most impressive modern players.
I've only ever checked out the first dude, neck tattoo boy, and the last cuz he plays such fekt up guitars, and I saw him on Beato.
They all can rip but it's like Vai said about Eddie:
The real trick is to be able to play like a beast but write accessible, bitchin' songs.

I chatted with Steve for a minute some years ago and he signed this for me.

It's nighttime at the Sanctuary, and Opal has taken her perch atop the music gear (an EVH 5150 for anyone musically inclined) to keep an eye out for things that go bump in the dark.
It's usually Toby trying to find their way to the bathroom, or Big Chungus raiding the pantry for a midnight snack.
Despite the similarity, Opal has never played Animal Crossing and has no idea who this "Blathers" is, or why people keep calling her that.
(Opal is a Webkinz Opal Owl adopted from eBay)
