Eurovision 2002 - Wrap Up
Tumblr media
That's it for Eurovision 2002 - a smaller year. Despite the shrinking thanks to the smaller budgets available to ETV and the Estonian Government, the production and contest overall exceeded what might have been expected. There are several small changes that resulted in interesting improvements and unearthing a shadier side of the competitions.
Let's start with the songs. 2002 has a reputation problem. For many its seen as one of the worst Eurovision's ever. The winner one of the least loved, many attributing Latvia's win to a gimmick or to block voting (thanks Lithuania!) There are only three songs from 2002 in the songfestival.be 2023 top 500 - the lowest modern ebb. There are some iconic disasters on the small stage and much that is just not memorable. However not only are there gems hidden there, but the national finals as a whole are strong. I was worried going into this that after the trials of 2001 and with 2002's reputation, this would be an ordeal. It wasn't - it felt like the continuation of 2000s national final success resuming after a blip. Lots of variety with some progress from unexpected countries such as Malta. Behind the scenes, Eurovision is getting stronger - even if that's not apparent on the stage on the night.
The EBU, as is their wont, had another couple of voting experiments. One of those, the reverse recap, appeared to have instant positive effects in addressing the running order bias. The other was less successful and resulted in accusations (possibly highly accurate accusations) of vote swapping and rigging. Juries were in the dock when they could so easily be manipulated by those with the desire to. The televote at this stage looked like the answer. Forget diaspora voting, stopping bent juries fixing things was far more important.
Tumblr media
There was more than a couple of trophies to hand out this year for the first time, with the institution of the Marcel Bezençon awards organised by Sweden's head of delegation, Christer Björkman. Mirroring the Festival of Sanremo's additional prizes, there was a new artistic award (won by Sweden...), a new press award (won by France) and a fan award organised by OGAE, which went to often overlooked Finnish entry Laura Voutilainen.
Back to the actual production, and although ETV made the very best of not much money, there were some issues, notably with the organisation of the evening. Every show has chaos going on behind the scenes, however it's rarely visible to the viewing public in the way it was in 2002. The postcards and the interval acts were both a little disappointing and certainly aren't among the ones that are remembered.
Tumblr media
The hosting was an improvement on the previous year even though there were some cringe moments and awkwardness, those were eclipsed by the delightful mid-show song break. Yes, is was mega-cheesy yet it just worked in a way these things so often don't. It pushed the faux romance between hosts to a self-parodying extreme and it still came off as sweet. Well done.
One thing that's still present is relegation. At least this year, the country (Malta) putting lots of money and effort into their national final didn't get relegated as punishment for trying. Finland however weren't so lucky. Their promotion of Laura was extensive, but it didn't pay off and Finland had turned into one of the yo-yo nations of Eurovision. Would they ever be the same competition as Poland or Portugal again?
So, it's possible to host Eurovision on a budget, the running order problem can be fixed, but the EBU still have work to do on this televoting thing and relegation is a bugbear that needs to be resolved. What will 2003 bring?

Hollow, Ghost
7, 12, 13
Hope you don't mind that there are many of these :>
Ok so I did #12 and #13 for Hollow in another answer recently so be sure to check out the "#Hollow Knight Asks" tag for my page! I'll do #7 for Hollow here since I've not done that one for them yet and then the rest for Ghost!
7. the moment of theirs that made me the happiest
- Hollow: it's a tie between them walking out of the temple in Embrace the Void and them going batshit on Radiance in Dream No More. They get so little screentime in game so the absolute bad bitch energy of "I win and there's nothing you can do about it" in both of these endings made me go feral and I (accidentally) slammed my Xbox controller down during their two seconds of (half) onscreen time in ETV and the poor controller still makes a rattling sound to this day lol. The fact they gave us a canon ending where Hollow lives and actually staggers out. Yes I know DNM is more popular but ETV is the cope I needed mentally for the "you thought you'd seen the last of me! Surprise! I survived through all this shit and will live while the gods responsible roll around in their graves" and will gladly grab and run with it like the feral little rat that I am
-Ghost: shade lord Super Saiyan transformation complete with happy meal snacking Radiance and then Godseeker as desert because she talked so much shit. Something about the entire ETV ending timeline where Ghost looks at the other solutions and says "nah" and goes through so much so they get to smack the Radiance around like a squeaky dog toy is my favorite thing for them. I literally yelled "YES GET HER ASS! YOU TELL HER!" when they go for Radiance and then I just dissolved into ungraceful incoherency when they snatch Godseeker up like the last Pringle chip in the can. Ghost got what Ghost deserved lol
12. what I like about the way the fandom portrays them
Ghost- I like the specific flavor of fandom Ghost where they're this absolute force of (controlled) chaos. A bundle of fully-capable-of-mass-destruction God wrapped neatly in this tiny potato form and they are quiet and observant, giving little ability to read them as they observe the world. An enigma. They give off this older-than-time-and-knowing-beyond-comprehension feel and yet at any moment they want to they're going to whip out the nail and smash some shit to see what it does or buy an overpriced new lantern or charm they don't need because it's sparkly and looks cool. I love the carefully calculated balance between "This is an ancient force capable of swallowing gods and unleashing hell upon the unfortunate and it's face and body language gives nothing away" and "this is a shiny button that says Do Not Press and I'm going to press it anyway because I can and ooooo is that a rotten egg? I need it right now"
13. what I don't like about how the fandom portrays them
Ghost- ehhh probably when people make them TOO overly emotional and openly expressive. So little is elaborated about their backstory that there's nothing that really bothers me too bad, though I like when they have a careful balance of some childlike wonder in the world, mixed with this muted sense of an ageless otherworldly creature with a quiet way of doing things. Ghost is kinda an enigma in that we don't really know WHY they are the way that they are. They seemingly hatched with Hollow and are a clutchmate so they're definitely not a "baby" in that sense, but physically Hollow matured into adult form whereas Ghost apparently didn't. Is it because they needed something external to promote growth into an adult molt that they were deprived of? Are they even Hollow's past hatchmate or just the Shade god of the abyss condensing itself into a form tied to the Hollow Knight's greatest regrets to allow it to move more freely? Either way they clearly have a will and certain desires, but it's muted in such a way that just really seems to fit with their mysterious persona and when people make them too openly clingy and visibly expressive in their motivations it kinda turns me off. "What are they doing and why?" As they do things with little elaboration and explanation fits better for them imo

Read all the news about director koratala siva at HYD7AM
From 'Mirchi' to 'Bharat Ane Nenu', Koratala Siva, who is known as a successful director with four consecutive wins, saw a major failure with 'Acharya'. The movie made with mega heroes Chiranjeevi and Ram Charan turned out to be a disaster and left fans reeling. Mega fans criticized him severely. Even six months after the release of the film, the bitter memories continue to haunt him. While Chiranjeevi has already commented that the reason for the failure of 'Acharya' is the director, now the music director Mani Sharma has also created a sensation by commenting that the reason for the film's music not being very impressive is due to the lack of music.
The Chiranjeevi-Mani Sharma combination has many musical hits. However, there is an opinion among mega fans that Mani Sharma did not provide music to the expected level for 'Acharya'. They were of the opinion that he was particularly disappointed in the background music. But Mani Sharma says that he is not wrong about the music of 'Acharya'.
Mani Sharma participated in a fun show with Alli which aired on ETV. On this occasion, he was asked why the music in Acharya's film could not entertain to the expected level. Mani Sharma replied with a smile saying, "Both songs have become hits." Then he immediately made sensational comments about the background score."I did a version of 'Acharya' with the experience of working in Chiranjeevi's films in the past. But the director said let's try something new. There is nothing wrong with that... because one should always do something new," said Mani Sharma. Judging by Mani Sharma's words, it is understood that the music was given according to Koratala's taste. With this, Mega fans are once again targeting Koratas and criticizing them.

Eurovision 2002: The Interval Act and Other Performances
Tumblr media
It may be Christmas, but this blog does not stop! Here are some topless Estonian men self-flagellating with viht. Happy Christmas!
Yes, it's interval act time, and if there's one thing that a small stage is going to inhibit it's the intervals act. To squeeze that many performers into a small space, you have to leave the drummers off to one side. It's entitled 'Rebirth' and is performed by dance group Runo along with the ETV Children's Choir. It's cut from the same cloth as several previous interval acts - host country culture portrayed through the medium of modern dance along with some rhythmic music composed for the occasion.
It's not particularly memorable - in fact the English Wikipedia page for the contest doesn't even mention it, though it does have the memorable sauna related scene above which I'm sure we can all enjoy.
Tumblr media
Leading off is a shortened reprise of last year's winning song by the artists Tanal Pader and Dave Benton, although there's no sign of 2XL. I hope they're there in the background somewhere. There's no messing about at the start of this year, there's relatively little preamble before launching directly into the contest.
Like in 1999, there's a mid-running order break for ads including what is probably the single most memorable additional musical number of the show. The two hosts star in what appears to be a little skit but turns into a full musical number. It makes the most of Annely Peebo's mezzo-soprano voice for a song poking gentle fun at just how many songs at Eurovision are about love. Marko joins in to demonstrate that he too can sing to the applause of the crowd.
Tumblr media
A short pre-recorded video accompanies it and frankly, for a mid-running order break, this is as about as perfect as it gets. The song A Little Story in Music feels like a musical aside from a classic era Hollywood or Broadway musical, it's performed beautifully and it only lasts a couple of minutes. It's completely perfect and I like it so much I've linked it below.

Reacting to the Perfect Wife on Screen: Revisiting Rojgere Ginni
Growing up, when the tired sun slowly set against the sounds of children playing in the goli (alley), Maghrib (call for prayer) would announce the evening settling in, and we’d return home.
Mothers would prepare snacks for the family and turn on ETV for an episode of Rojgere Ginni.[1] Sometimes the family would enjoy the show together with a steaming cup of chaa and crispy alu puris, but often in the weekends all the mothers, those employed and those who stay at home, would gather at a bhabi’s place, chatting and commenting on the show.[2] It was one of those instances that would bring the mothers together, save their secret gatherings late at night for a match of ludo. As I grew up, I watched my mother and those of my neighbours always finding something on the TV to watch together, but the days of Rojgere Ginni never returned.
Rojgere Ginni was mainly centralised around the house-wife, but often featured working women. The theme was focused on the family, and it would always be a joint family. Each family’s everyday life was revealed in between little games. It was a lovely show that brought together mothers and house-helps of our apartment building.
Tumblr media
Reading about Skeggs and Wood’s methodology, I was intrigued to revisit the days of Rojgere Ginni. Considering the socio-cultural context of Bangladesh where the classifications are different – middle class being a large section that the majority identifies as and working class not being as distinct of an identity – I wonder whether the methodology can be altered or completely discarded to explain the relationship between reality TV and the women as viewers. Like Skeggs and Wood also observe in the middle class women of their study, the middle class viewers of Rojgere Ginni were attuned to shows having educational aspects that may add value to the future (games being a mixture of quick wit, maths, general knowledge, etc. that developed feminine knowledge of the household), but family values were also a part of the attraction. The other group that constituted of house-helps or “poor” demographic of the show, as far as I can remember, loved the show as much, but for what reason, I will never know.
“Reality television’s forensic detailing of the performance of bodies, behaviours and practices enables new types of exploitation to extend into the realm of that previously designated ‘private’: in this way some persons can be shown to be valueable, whilst others, valueless depending upon their dispositions towards working on themselves” is evident in the case of Rojgere Ginni (women winning the games more suited to the definition of the Bangali woman). So what happens when there is no distinction between working class and middle class? How do we assess these women’s relationship with reality TV?
Like I said, the days of Rojgere Ginni are gone. My mother and I don’t keep track of the new reality TV shows – Sreemoyee suffices for her, and I wonder how much she wants to be like her.
