Wild Life character designs!! These are inspired by 1940s-50s casino wear :D Some design notes under the cut!
- Each team has their own casino-themed motif, which are, in order of appearance above, slot machine icons, card suits, poker chips, coins, 8-balls, and dice. I did not look up the meanings of the card suits, they were chosen based off vibes and aesthetics. BigB does not have any of these motifs, though I may give him some sort of joker theming if he more definitively joins the final girls in the future!
- Bdubs and Cleo have been inconsistent with their skins so both of their designs are a sort of hybrid between their default skins and their life series skins, with Cleo’s being more heavily leaning toward her default skin because the color palette is easier to adapt.
- These outfits are based on 1940s-50s casino wear, as these decades signified the rise of Las Vegas, Hollywood glamour, and a post-Great Depression economy, which fits in nicely with the wild cards and logo of this season. Not every outfit is perfectly accurate to the setting, as I preferred to give them unique designs rather than giving them all different colors of the same suit. Some of the outfits I designed for an earlier decade before I realized Vegas only really got big in the 50s, and I did not modernize most of them so forgive me if some of them look a little too 30s (Etho I kept 30s on purpose bc I think being outdated suits him). and if you know a lot about 1940s-50s fashion please don’t kill me for any inaccuracies i tried my best! special shout out to derek guy (menswear guy on twitter) as his account has taught me so much about proper fitting of suits and these designs would not have come out nearly as good without him

I'm seeing your Bioshock posting. Any project your working on that's related?
(I'm excited I love Bioshock)
Thank you very much for noticing!! I have been pretty obsessed with Bioshock and Rapture since I played it last year and then I had a brainwave about how similar the descriptions of Meliora is to the concept (not the reality iykyk) of Rapture.
So below the read more are some of my rambling thoughts. This may turn into a fic one day or it may just stay an idea but who knows? I have included no spoilers for either Bioshock or Bioshock 2 storylines as most of this takes place pre Raptures construction.
source
So Jen, you might ask, how would Terzo even be invited to Rapture in the first place? Doesn't Ryan hate religion? Why would Terzo even want to be there?
And I have a very extensive answer for you! (after you chose with me to ignore all dates in canon because for this we need Terzo in his late 20s/30s in the 1920s)
To begin I must explain my headcanon for how the Ministry and the Clergy works. The Ministry was founded in opposition to the rise of the Catholic church in Italy. They opposed the strict and cruel ways the Christian church and wanted to offer an alternative and a sanctuary to those mistreated and maligned. Their numbers grew until they were noticed and forced to flee Italy.
They found a home in rural Sweden, taking advantage of the overwhelming rise of Protestantism and there they stayed, biding their time and increasing their ranks. Their congregation grew so large that they were starting to struggle to sustain themselves so the Clergy came up with a plan. The Projects were different businesses, outreach and recruitment efforts to build revenue and attract the rich and successful to their cause and it worked! They were truly self sustaining and starting to have influence in important places but the Clergy understood that they were playing the long game.
Which brings us nicely to New York in 1922. Terzo Emeritus, third son of the reigning Papa has been assigned to set up a speakeasy to make the most of the Prohibition movement. His goal is to make a load of money and convert as many sinners as he can find. He sets up his 'dance hall' which he calls his House of Sin. There are cocktails and dancers and escorts and cross dressers and all the outcasts and freaks that aren't welcome anywhere else. It gains a cult reputation as a wonderland where anything goes, seemingly built from nothing into the most inclusive yet exclusive club in New York.
Andrew Ryan begins frequenting the place, not because he has tastes for anything other than a pretty girl but because he respects their ethos. He has respect for anyone who disregards laws and social norms and makes their own rules. He is made to feel welcome as are any of the rich and powerful that frequent the club, not because Terzo necessarily likes them but because part of his work there is to recruit powerful people to the Church. He welcomes them personally, brings them the best men or women that they might desire, keeps the drinks and smokes flowing freely until he can bring the conversation around to politics, morals and values so he can see how receptive they might be to the Ministry's teachings.
With Ryan though he barely has to push, almost as if he had come to investigate Terzo's views and opinions for himself. He finds a like mind in Ryan, someone who sees the flaws in society and how they could be improved. He finds himself talking about Meliora openly much to his surprise, the gleaming metropolis of his imagination where people are unrestrained by the petty and the inconsequential, where the seven deadly sins are celebrated and encouraged.
He fears he slips up bringing his religion into his ramblings but Ryan is unaffected by the revelations. He asks directly if Terzo worships the Devil and when he says yes the response he receives is surprisingly respectful. Ryan doesn't believe in God so equally he doesn't believe in the Devil but if he had to pick between the two the one who would earn his regard is the one who chose His own path and didn't just blindly obey. They spend many a night discussing the possibilities of such a place well into the early hours neither of them sure that such a place would ever exist.
Time went on and the world changed. Prohibition ends and the club goes legitimate. Slowly but surely wider society begins to take notice of their live and let live policy and don't like it at all. What was once the place to be seen becomes the place an upstanding member of society would never be seen. Business dwindles as the depression takes hold and by the time the rumblings of the Second World War reach the US they close their doors for good. Terzo returns to the Ministry and to Europe, serving the Clergy in a much more traditional capacity, that is until in 1946 when he receives an invitation from an old friend.
source
It takes a hell of a lot to convince the Clergy to let him go, most of them writing off this supposed underwater metropolis as impossible. Eventually though the curiosity and ambition win out and they allow him to go but only if he takes a company of ghouls to keep him out of trouble and who have the abilities to get him out if the worst were to happen, most leaning towards the roof caving in under the pressure of the ocean.
Rapture is almost everything he imagined Meliora to be. The grandiose architecture, neon lights and atmosphere of excitement. The only difference was the underwater setting. It was fascinating, the low blue glow coming from all of the countless windows. Wherever he went he would find himself captivated by the swaying plants on the seabed, the schools of fish or the dark shadow of a whale passing by. The longer he stays the more he starts to forget, until he looks out the window and is reminded all over again of the fascinating place he lives.
source & source
He slips back into his old life so easily, finding many familiar faces from the social circles of New York making up the elite of Rapture. He secures a place in Fort Frolic and goes about recruiting the most beautiful and hedonistic people he can find to work at his club. Anything goes there as is the case with a lot of things in Rapture and it becomes so popular that Ryan even sends his mistress to work with him when she isn't otherwise occupied with him. Everything is perfect for a time but if you have played the games then you know what is coming next.
For now I think I will leave it there. I have a lot of ideas about how he tackles some of the issues that grow within Rapture but if this becomes a fully fledged fic I will save those for that. I hope you have enjoyed my ramblings and I would love to hear others thoughts and ideas if you have any!! I will leave you with the below quotes which were where I started with this so give them a read, would you kindly?
The world since he was last seen has changed. Called Moloch by some, the great industrial machine has been grinding away, grinding everything and everyone down in the process. Spies are everywhere. Their eyes are behind the screens of your televisions and devices, their ears attentive to every frequency in the air. Everything is mediated, pre-packaged, and pressure sealed, your lives preordained. From the cradle to the grave, the world moves along as if there is free will, but this is the grandest illusion. There is no power beyond that which the all-seeing eye controls. The gods are all dead. Even art is pure commodity. But some still fight, quietly at first, but soon they will rise and make the glorious noise of the ancients, donning their masks, these nameless ghouls led by Papa Emeritus III. - Source
To build a city at the bottom of the sea! Insanity. But where else could we be free from the clutching hand of the Parasites? Where else could we build an economy that they would not try to control, a society that they would not try to destroy? It was not impossible to build Rapture at the bottom of the sea. It was impossible to build it anywhere else. Source
"We would sit down to studying exciting Futurist manifestos, sketched the blueprints of utopian metropoles, spiked with shiny skyscrapers stabbing at the heavens belly… Wantonly swollen zeppelins would to carry our gospel of indulgence to the farthest corners of the globe to summon and enslave. (…) Forged in nostalgia of steam and fire, this brave new world of ambition, vice, lust and greed - all so inherent to the enlightened modernity, was always with him through all these years. And it is now - when our church continues to grow stronger and wealthier under wise reign of Papa Emeritus III - that these visions may finally be witnessed and embraced in the preaching's of 'Meliora’ - his most contemporary and humane Encyclical.” - Source
source
I chose the impossible. I chose... Rapture, a city where the artist would not fear the censor, where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality, Where the great would not be constrained by the small! And with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your city as well. Source

If you think Tango is a squeaky dog toy normally then you have not seen him swoon over working with Etho on the stat poker redstone, you have not watched him lose his mind when Etho was winning Decked Out (1) because he liked it so much and you never heard him laugh and stammer and giggle when working on the mini game district together
He’s an Ethogirl at heart even if the life series made him feel more comfortable and casual around him (washed out jokes lol), he is a teenage girl swirling his hair and kicking his feet going omg hiiiii >_< and scribbling his name on the back of his redstone blueprints and I think that’s beautiful”

Boy's Own (issue ?) YEAR: 1989 CREATED BY: Terry Farley, Andrew Weatherall, Cymon Eckel and Steven Hall LOCATION: London SIZE: A4 WHAT'S INSIDE.... A zine from the last month of the last year of the 1980s.... By this time a gazillion fanzines had been published in the UK since the start of the punk rock explosion, covering a multitude of musical styles that had emerged in its wake. Football fanzines had also established themselves as an integral part of our national game. Boy's Own was started in 1986 by a group of young clubbers who were friends with DJ Paul Oakenfold and right where they needed to be as acid house began to take off in the UK. One of their inspirations was Liverpool fanzine The End, which irreverently mixed up music, football, poetry, fashion, humour, booze, drugs and politics (some of the zine's writers also ended up in indie-dance band The Farm). Each issue of Boy's Own contained a list of "uppers and downers", just like The End's list of "ins and outs". After sampling the club scene in Ibiza and discovering a new euphoria-enhancing drug called ecstasy, the Boy's Own crew became associated with London's first acid house clubs. Andrew Weatherall DJed at Danny Rampling's Shoom, and Terry Farley DJed at Paul Oakenfold's Future night at Heaven. They soon began hosting their own outdoor raves, helping to start a movement that would inspire any number of "Shock! Horror!" headlines in the tabloid press. They eventually formed their own record label and (if I remember correctly) also invented the phrase "it's all gone Pete Tong".... And in a similar way to the first punk zines, Boy's Own reflected the enormous changes in Britain's youth culture and fashion that were driven by house music and ecstasy in the late 1980s. This issue of the zine even includes the acid house equivalent of one of the most iconic expressions of the punk ethos (a picture of some badly drawn guitar chord charts accompanied by the words “THIS IS A CHORD - THIS IS ANOTHER - THIS IS A THIRD - NOW FORM A BAND”) that appeared in the first issue of Sideburns fanzine in January 1977 (although the Boy’s Own crew wrongly attribute it to Mark Perry’s Sniffin’ Glue). The acid house/ecstasy/rave scene was every bit as seismic as punk had been a decade earlier and also inspired a new generation of bands who were influenced by dance music (something that New Order had already pioneered since the early 1980s), the best of which were based in and around Manchester - which became known as Madchester at the time - and was also home to the Hacienda night club, which many people regarded as the epicentre of acid house. Some existing indie bands decided to completely change their sound and join the smiley/baggy/indie-dance revolution - most notably, Primal Scream. Andrew Weatherall's production work on their album "Screamadelica" helped the band to create an influential blend of rock and rave music, especially on the iconic "Higher Than The Sun" - a track that perfectly captured the mood of the era. This issue of Boy's Own features Flowered Up, a London band who managed to make a couple of half decent records while attempting to be the southern equivalent of Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses. Looking through the records in the Boy's Own charts, most of them would sound a bit lame today, with the notable exception of "The Sun Rising" by The Beloved. New releases include "Madchester Rave On - The Remixes" by Happy Mondays, which features a remix of "Hallelujah" by Paul Oakenfold and Andy Weatherall, and a remix of "Rave On" by Paul Oakenfold and Terry Farley. There's also cartoons, readers' letters, lifestyle tips, bouncer horror stories, girl's own nightmares, moody flyers, Viz comic, the Kray twins and much more. It's often true that the pioneers of a scene end up getting pissed off when it goes mainstream, and in an article titled "Paradise Lost", the Boy's Own crew also reminisce about the halcyon days of clubbing before the riff raff started jumping on the bandwagon. Click on the title above to see scans of all the zine's pages.... Andrew Weatherall was one of the greatest DJs of all time, and after his death in 2020, a group of fans created The Weatherdrive: a Google Drive folder containing hundreds of hours of his studio mixes, live recordings and radio shows. The complete collection of Boy's Own fanzines was published in a book called "Boy's Own, The Complete Fanzines 1986-92: Acid House Scrapes And Capers" but it's been out of print for years and I'm not prepared to fork out a fortune for a second hand copy.... my box of 1980s fanzines flickr

Maybe it’s me taking things too literally but one of my main issues with the Barbie movie is that it sets up an allegory that it cannot hope to resolve in a way that is both satisfying and coherent.
As soon as Ken says that the real world is like the reverse of Barbieland, you’ve got an issue. Because if Barbieland genuinely is a harmful matriarchal system— and you can certainly make the argument for that, as Kens are kind of set up as second class citizens— then the movie and the audience should want them to rise up and demand equality. But this would be antithetical to the girl-power ethos of the movie, so that can’t happen.
The only option that is presented for dismantling the system is replacing it with a worse one— a patriarchy in which there is still a gendered designation of citizens vs underclass, and the underclass is oppressed more actively than in the previous system (the Barbies are in direct servitude to the Kens, instead of the previous system in which Kens were politically disenfranchised but largely left to their own devices). When it is made clear that replacing the system is Bad, the remaining option is incremental change— they’re offered low-level political representation and the ‘maybe someday you’ll get as much power as women have in the real world’ joke.
Again, I know I’m probably not meant to read into it in depth like this, but. How can I not. There is ostensibly a revolution in this movie— the Barbies taking down the patriarchy, yay— but it’s a counter-revolution in reaction to the original attempt at revolutionary social change. Disruption of the status quo is not something this movie can fundamentally support, because that would mean destroying the dreamworld. So slow, incremental reform is all it can advocate.
The main counter-argument I can see to this is to say that Ken was wrong, that Barbieland and the real world are not in fact mirror images of each other and he was incorrect to assume so. While I think it is possible that that was the intended message, it rings somewhat hollow because he does have at least a bit of a point.

Islamic Schools in Manchester: Nurturing Faith and Academic Excellence
Manchester, a vibrant and culturally diverse city, is home to a growing number of Islamic schools that cater to the educational and spiritual needs of the local Muslim community. These schools aim to provide an environment where students can excel academically while also staying connected to their faith. Islamic schools in Manchester offer a balanced curriculum that integrates religious teachings with modern subjects, ensuring that students receive a well-rounded education.
In this blog, we will explore the landscape of Islamic schools in Manchester, their unique features, the benefits they offer to students, and their role in the broader community.
1. The Rise of Islamic Schools in Manchester
Islamic schools have seen significant growth in Manchester in recent years, reflecting the increasing demand from Muslim families seeking faith-based education for their children. These schools range from primary to secondary institutions and provide both boys' and girls' education, with some schools offering co-educational settings. The rise of these schools is a response to the desire for an educational environment that aligns with Islamic values while delivering a high standard of academic achievement.
Many Islamic schools in Manchester are privately funded, though some receive state support as voluntary-aided institutions. The growth of these schools has been supported by the strong involvement of local Muslim communities, charitable organizations, and educational trusts.
2. Curriculum and Islamic Studies
A key feature of Islamic schools in Manchester is their dual curriculum, which combines the national curriculum with Islamic studies. Students receive instruction in core subjects like English, Mathematics, Science, and History, while also learning about the Quran, Hadith, Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), and the Arabic language. This integration allows students to build a strong academic foundation while deepening their understanding of Islamic teachings.
Islamic studies are typically woven into the school day, with lessons in moral values, Islamic etiquette, and the life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) included alongside traditional subjects. This approach aims to develop students who are both knowledgeable in secular subjects and grounded in their faith.
3. Islamic Ethos and Environment
Islamic schools in Manchester place a strong emphasis on creating an environment that reflects Islamic principles. This includes promoting modesty, respect, compassion, and a sense of community. The schools often have a dress code that aligns with Islamic teachings, and students are encouraged to observe prayers (Salah) during school hours.
Teachers in Islamic schools serve not only as educators but also as role models, guiding students in their personal and spiritual development. The environment is structured to support both academic success and character-building, with an emphasis on discipline, good manners, and moral conduct.
4. Focus on Character Development
One of the distinguishing features of Islamic schools is their focus on character development. The curriculum is designed to nurture students' spiritual growth and encourage them to embody Islamic values in their daily lives. Schools often incorporate lessons on honesty, humility, kindness, and responsibility, helping students develop a strong moral compass.
Through extracurricular activities, community service projects, and Islamic events, students are encouraged to engage with their communities and contribute positively to society. This holistic approach to education ensures that students not only achieve academic success but also grow into responsible and compassionate individuals.
5. Academic Achievement and Performance
Islamic schools in Manchester strive to deliver high-quality education that prepares students for further education and successful careers. Many of these schools have achieved excellent academic results, with students performing well in national exams such as GCSEs and A-levels. The small class sizes, dedicated teachers, and focused learning environment contribute to the academic success of students.
Additionally, Islamic schools often provide supplementary tutoring and support for students who need extra help, ensuring that no student is left behind. The goal is to produce graduates who are well-prepared for higher education and future career paths while remaining committed to their faith.
6. Islamic Schools for Girls in Manchester
There are several Islamic schools in Manchester that cater specifically to girls, offering a supportive and empowering environment for young Muslim women. These schools provide girls with the opportunity to excel academically in an environment that respects their religious and cultural values.
Schools such as Manchester Muslim Preparatory School and others offer tailored programs for girls, emphasizing academic achievement, leadership, and personal development. Girls in these schools are encouraged to pursue their ambitions and develop the skills they need to succeed in the wider world, all within the framework of Islamic principles.
7. Community Engagement and Parental Involvement
Islamic schools in Manchester are often deeply rooted in the local Muslim community. They work closely with parents and community leaders to ensure that the education provided aligns with the values and expectations of the families they serve. Parental involvement is strongly encouraged, with schools often holding regular meetings, events, and workshops to engage families in the educational process.
The involvement of parents is seen as crucial to the success of the students, as it fosters a strong partnership between home and school. This collaboration helps ensure that students are supported both academically and spiritually, creating a unified approach to their development.
8. Challenges Facing Islamic Schools
Despite the many successes, Islamic schools in Manchester face challenges, like all educational institutions. One of the key challenges is the financial pressure, especially for those schools that are privately funded. Maintaining high-quality facilities, hiring qualified staff, and offering a comprehensive curriculum can be expensive, and schools often rely on community support and charitable donations.
Another challenge is balancing the dual curriculum effectively, ensuring that students excel in both secular and religious studies. Some schools face the additional task of addressing misconceptions about Islamic education and engaging with the broader community to promote understanding and cooperation.
Conclusion
Islamic schools in Manchester play a vital role in providing high-quality education that integrates academic excellence with Islamic values. These schools offer students a unique environment where they can grow academically, spiritually, and morally. By focusing on character development, fostering a sense of community, and encouraging parental involvement, Islamic schools contribute to the holistic development of their students.
While challenges remain, the continued growth and success of Islamic schools in Manchester are a testament to the commitment of educators, parents, and community leaders. As the demand for faith-based education continues to rise, Islamic schools will remain a crucial part of Manchester’s diverse educational landscape, nurturing the next generation of leaders who are well-prepared for the challenges of the modern world while staying true to their faith.

Riot Grrrl and zines
The dedication and community feeling of the early punk scene allowed zines to get interviews with people who would go on to be big names before they had achieved fame. When punk started to gain popularity, many of the zines that previously helped define the scene had run its course. Sniffin’ Glue ended in 1977 and in 1979 Punk followed suit. Bands like Crass and Subhumans became staples of the early punk movement.
In the 1990s, the riot grrrl scene rebirthed the making and distribution of zines. As a result of the male-driven punk world of the past, riot grrrl had taken over and encouraged young girls and women to start their own punk movement making bands and their own zine, get their voices heard. Key bands at the time included Bikini Kill, Heavens to Betsy, Bratmobile, L7, and Sleater-Kinney, all of which are still praised and listed to today. As 1993 rolled around, around 40,000 zines were being published only in North America! many of them devoted to riot grrrl music and female lead politics.
It’s important to note that riot grrrl was more than just a musical genre, it was a feminist movement! though it’s still blurry identifying the specifics of that movement. As Max Kessler wrote in Paper, “Whatever riot grrrl became a political movement, an avant-garde, or an ethos—it began as a zine.” Riot grrrl spread from its epicenter in Olympia, Washington to across the country finally reaching and becoming popularised around the world.
Zine culture has made its comeback in the recent years, due rise of individual expression in social media. Social movements like Black Lives Matter launched an explosion of zines to express their work and beliefs. With that, what’s cool about creating your own zine in the modern era of the internet is that you’ll have no circulation restrictions. Everyone with an internet connection can easily read and share your ideas.
