Marvin (red-flag I know, I just find him compelling)

Mendel (I have a very complex love-hate relationship with this HIPPA-defying bastard)

Cordelia/Charlotte (they're both genuinely so lovely and complex and unfortunately get pushed to the wayside by the tight-knit family far too often)

Whizzer/Marvin (I'm a simple creature)

I literally could not pick just one under threat of death (I have been listening to "A Marriage Proposal" and "Days Like This" a lot this week though)

Maybe "Holding to the Ground" (it's still super good, it's just not one I've found myself listening to on repeat a whole bunch)

A Day in Falsettoland (there's no analysis for this, I just love it)

Everyone Hates His Parents (the one good thing Mendel did in the whole show was add those funky little adlibs)

"Unlikely Lovers" personally gets me every time, but "What Would I Do" and "Father to Son" are both pretty strong contenders imo

MARVIN!! I could literally talk about that bastard for hours (he means so much to me I literally feel sick writing this)

I would add the song where Mendel sings about being a shit psychiatrist back in (I'm kidding, I love the show as is, hating on Mendel is just a fav pastime of mine)

I subscribed to the notion that Whizzer was being wholly wronged by Marvin initially, but the OBC version of "The Chess Game" awakened me (I like him and his relationship with Marvin more now, because them both being flawed is infinitely more compelling than Marvin just being a douche)

Cordelia (I just want to talk to her and I wish she was more present in the show)

Jason throwing his Bar Mitzvah in the hospital with Whizzer (it's a simple answer, but that really was impactful for everyone in his inner circle)

Mendel (he may be a bitch, but he has killer harmonies)

Christian Borle probably (I've seen him the most in other things), although I truly do adore the whole cast

I actually have made most everyone important to me watch the damn thing...soo...(I showed them "The Chess Game")

Act One (I love "Falsettoland" but "March of the Falsettos" is a beast that for brevity's sake I cannot address in full)

Marvin. That's it. Ask me about him and I can talk for days. Also Mendel (although for entirely different - and slightly more hateful - reasons)

Gordon Schwinn from "A New Brain" (I think he would go insane instantly and I find that concept utterly hilarious)

Jason and Whizzer (another basic answer from me, but Whizzer was so important to Jason and so incredibly influential in his formative years that I can't help but adore how he became an example of "healthy" masculinity for the kid)

OOH TALK ABOUT DR. MENDEL

DR. MENDEL IS A BLESSING

All right, so, since he’s a psychiatrist, Mendel had to go to medical school and obtain and MD. After doing a dual pre-med and psych major, I think he was probably interested in neurology and psychiatry. But I think he also really loves kids– especially babies– and really liked the OB rotation. He’s not one for trauma, because that comes with a lot of death, and I think he’d much rather help people live their best lives and bring life into the world, rather than have to watch it end. 

During his rotations, he was still a bit of a nervous wreck, because medical school is incredibly overwhelming, but he’s insanely good at calming his friends down because when he gets In The Zone, nothing can stop him. He’s very excited and optimistic to Change the World, because he’s, like, 24, and it’s the late 60s-early 70s, and he was definitely a bit of a hippie. 

And then the Trauma rotation happens, and he’s just like, “Oh my G-d I cannot do this!!!!!!” But his advisor is like, “You’re really bright, and I think you’ll like the next couple rotations.” 

Which just so happen to be Pediatrics and Psychiatry. 

During the Pediatrics rotation, his professors are literally amazed at how wonderful he is when he works with the kiddos. He’s phenomenal when it comes to calming them down and reassuring them. He takes his time with them and doesn’t actually begin his examinations until they’re relaxed. Mendel never talks down to them and explains to the kids what he’s doing and why, in terms they can understand. When he’s with the actual, legit babies, his professors have to remind him to stop cuddling them and get on with the exam, Weisenbachfeld! 

Then he does the psychiatry rotation, and he just, likes the feel of it. He’s always loved psychology. He’s a bit goofy and warm and just listens to the patients. He’s still a bit of a nervous wreck when it comes to the advice-giving part, but Mendel means well and once he gets more confident, he decides that This Is It. Though he wants to go into child psychiatry, there’s a lovely doctor who offers him a well-paid position within her psychiatry office, and he’s like, “shit, sure, I’ll take it!” He’s 26 and is still like, “I…do not really know how to Be An Adult, so this will work.” 

He loves what he does in the beginning. But he slowly becomes jaded as he realizes that his patients are…dicks, or that they’re just not listening, and he’s not really sure what to do. Mendel definitely prefers his child and adolescent patients. He finds Jason completely refreshing, and feels like, for the first time in a damn long time, he’s actually helping someone. It’s not until after Marvin’s death, where he helps Jason immensely during the grieving process, that he decides to pursue strictly child psychiatry. (It’s Trina who encourages him to do so, because she’s literally in awe of how wonderful he is with Jason). 

Also, Mendel does do a couple of mornings at the hospital in the pediatrics ward. He wears scrubs in fun colors or patterns, and always has Keith Haring stickers for the kiddos. He lets Jason and his lil baby girl help pick them out!! Trina thinks Mendel is adorable in scrubs. She gets him a new lab coat and sews a patch with his name on it for him.

i legitimately don’t think you’ll ever meet anyone as proud to be trans as mendel weisenbachfeld. you know how he is: trans flag sticking up out of his backpack, trans pins, the whole package. he sticks “protect trans kids” stickers on people’s binders when they aren’t looking (especially after trump’s reaction to trans people in the military WTF WAS THAT). 

when he’s hanging with jason and/or fsj, he calls himself a clear, clear dad. “get it? because i’m a TRANS PARENT!” he’s more up on the puns than anyone cis, and i’m pretty certain that’s fact.
