What's in a Name, a short Pokemon Mystery Dunegon: Explorers of Sky comic featuring team North Star!
an exploration on the power of a name, and a lampshade on how characters can tell the difference between two pokemon of the exact same species

naming easter eggs!!
>reiji was a misspelling - i forgot that the japanese for thunder was rai, not rei, so reiji ended up as reiji rather than something playing off being an electric type. a spikey design and feeling for the speech bubble to contrast circe. also thats a pecha scarf because i like not being poisoned. >circe, in mythology, is the daughter of the sun god helios. fire type, daughter of the sun, you get the idea. a more rounded and curly design and speech bubble to contrast reiji. i forgot if circe was wearing the band that increased attack or the one that increased special attack but she certainly is wearing one. >phosphor's name is taken from a game called Oneshot!! the lamp visible in the last page is inspired directly by the lamplighter guys lamp and their speechbubble features a lightbulb, a big plot-important object in Oneshot
>fey is a reference to maya fey from ace attorney!! a purple scrunchie to reference that maya is purple, a magatama both around feys neck and in her speech bubble because thats plot important. the chains in the speech bubble are also a reference to ace attorney and the magatama. the background silhouette is the hazakura temple gates because that case was sure memorable.
>basilisk is a reference to the common water basilisk! so hella water motif and an attempt to merge a wooper with a basilisk. hell yeah.
>rivulet!! rain world rivulet!!!! i gave rivus big ol eyes to a surskit and stuck their axolotl-esque whisker on top and put pink highlights to make a surskit design with a very obvious inspiration. i didnt want to go with a water motif cause basilisk already had that so i made the background silhouette rivulet the slugcat and gave the speech bubble a more wavey look for fun.
>(in hindsight basilisks (walks on water) and rivulets (axolotl) names should have been swapped. that wouldve fit better. but oh well it is what it is and i dont wanna change it)

Tower of Dawn Review
5/5 stars Recommended for people who like: fantasy, magic, desert fantasy, multiple POVs, healers, Chaol Westfall, court intrigue, thriller I really like this one, but I will also readily admit that this is the creepiest book in the series. ToG had the creep/thriller aspect with the Ridderak and Cain, and CoM sort of touched on the side of thriller without actually diving in, but Tower goes further in than even ToG did. I like it, even the thriller aspect, but it’s definitely creepy. I can’t tell how I feel about Chaol for the first half of the book. He’s definitely still going strong on his end-of-QoS vibe, and he seems to have forgiven a lot of what he was angry about in that book, but he also still hasn’t let go of things—such as his loyalty and obedience—as much as he had in HoF. For starters, though, it’s nice to see Chaol return to being the kind of playful snappy he was in CoM, I’d forgotten how funny he could be. So, I really liked how jokey Chaol was in this one, and I liked his handling of the royal family, going so far as to scheme his way into a meeting with the khagan. I still felt that Chaol was a bit…condescending throughout the book, though he once again got better about it at the end of the book. I did really like being in Chaol’s head in this one, though. After reading this, I feel like he wasn’t really present in QoS as much as he was in the other books. Like, he was there and narrating, but he didn’t feel there. Seeing in his head in this one makes a lot of things suddenly make a lot more sense, and we even get an explanation for his previous blind obedience. Yes, admittedly, some of it was him being willfully ignorant, but more of it was him giving up certain privileges to knowledge in order to protect Dorian. Chaol’s journey with his injury was interesting. I’m not really a fan of how ableist he was being, but I can also acknowledge that shedding that ableism off was a crucial part of his journey and that we probably aren’t supposed to like it. Chaol needed to realize for himself that just because he couldn’t move his legs didn’t mean he was less than or couldn’t still contribute to the coming fight. His realization comes from the healing process, which has three different parts. One part is the physical healing that Yrene does to repair the damage to his spinal cord. Another part is the metaphysical/psychological healing that both he and Yrene have to participate in, and this is the part that really makes me understand him and how he sees things better. And then there’s the part that involves seeing things from the outside and realizing no one really looks down on him, and that his injury does not remove him from the prospect of fighting against Erawen. Chaol’s journey is a different version of Celaena’s story in HoF. They are both struggling with similar emotions, both wanting to be rid of them and ignore them, and both come to realize that ignoring them and being rid of their negative emotions and memories won’t solve anything. Same general arc, different people, different situation, different story, but a way to show many sides of the same issue. I love Nesryn’s side of things in this one. She’s a fun narrator, partly because she’s so excited to be in her home city, but also because she’s got a very relaxed vibe that none of the other characters really have. She’s worried and tense about certain things, but she definitely handles it better than a lot of the other characters in this series. Nesryn ends up with the rukhin riders and Sartaq for most of the book, and I would probably kill for a whole separate book just about the rukhin riders, Sartaq and Kadara, and Nesryn and Salkhi. Nesryn’s journey is one away from Adarlan. She loves the country, is willing to fight for it and the innocent people there, but spending time in the Southern Continent, exploring its reaches, has her slowly switching over. Nesryn’s main development in this one, I think, is deciding where she calls home. Regardless of where it is, she’s going to fight against Erawen, but I think a part of her needs that identity settled when we first come into this book, and her development centers around that. The world and culture there is so different from those seen in the rest of the book, and the prospect of people who live in mountain homes and ride the wind on the backs of giant birds is pretty awesome. Nesryn’s main goal is to find information to help defeat Erawen and to convince Sartaq to lend his aerial legions to the cause. Of course, things never really go to plan and Nesryn ends up venturing beyond the rukhin riders’ homes and seeing Stygian Spiders, which are called the khalankui in the Southern Continent, as well as visiting some thousand-year-old ruins, so a pretty wide range of places all in one go. It’s interesting to see a new land from the POV of someone who hails from that land. We didn’t really get to see that with Rowan and Wendlyn, since Rowan barely narrated that book, but Nesryn is one of the main narrators in this one, and she’s spent most of her life in Adarlan, so we get to see a mix of someone who loves that land, who sees it as her own, but is also an outsider and is still, to an extent, getting introduced to the land. I think it’s an interesting way to introduce a new land, and Maas sort of did it with Terrasen in EoS, except the group in that book didn’t stay long enough to really get as good a feel of the land as we do in this one. I also think it’s a nice break from either a character has lived in land forever and has exactly zero reason to give us exposition, or a character is 100% new to the land/situation. Yrene is a new character if you haven’t read Blade. A healer from the Torre Cesme, she takes no one’s shit, not even Chaol’s. Actually, since her mother was burned alive by Adarlanian soldiers when she was 11, that makes her particularly unwilling to put up with Chaol’s shit. She hates Adarlanians the same way Aedion does, the same way all those other children of fallen kingdoms do. But she’s a healer and so she helps Chaol with his injury and unwittingly gets dragged into things. Based on who the Big Bad is in this one, though, I wonder if she wouldn’t’ve been dragged into things anyway. Yrene’s journey is for herself and for the rest of the world. She’s ready to go to the northern continent and heal people injured in the fight against Erawen, but she still has that simmering rage in her that started when her mother died. Her internal journey and arc is about repairing the hole her mother’s death made and cooling that rage until she realizes no one group is ever homogenous in its beliefs and actions. She’s healing and realizing this as she heals Chaol, which requires research. Unfortunately, her research sparks the interest of the Big Bad in this story, and that’s when the external struggle begins. Yrene has to contend with healing Chaol, healing herself, hunting for answers, and being hunted herself. Yrene has a connection to nearly everyone in the story. She’s a healer from the Torre, she’s actively healing Chaol, but she’s also a friend of the royals who rule over the Southern Continent. Yrene wants to help as many people as possible, and yet she also befriends royals and ends up in court schemes. One of the princes, Kashin, has a romantic interest in her, though she turned him down, and is protective over her. One of the princesses, Hasar, is Yrene’s friend and asks her to occasionally spy for her. It’s a complicated situation, and it goes to show the delicate precipice Yrene balances on. Hasar is the eldest princess, second oldest of the royal kids, and a nasty piece of work. She’s fiercely protective of the ones that are hers and over her country, but that just means she’s ruthless and cunning in other areas. She has no issue manipulating Chaol, Yrene, Nesryn, and others to get what she wants. This manipulation even includes backing Chaol into a corner where he has to swear Aelin would never do anything like burn Ellwye’s coast…which Chaol being Chaol can’t answer with a definitive ‘she’d never.’ Other stuff includes her using Yrene as a spy or threatening to block the Narrow Sea between the continents to prevent passage. I can’t tell if I like her or not, but I appreciate her character. Maas does a good job of depicting her as someone who cares deeply and will do anything to protect those she cares about. As a plus, Hasar is an openly gay, main side character, which is definite improvement for these books re: representation (I know we had Emrys and Malakai, but neither were ‘main side characters,’ nor were they together as much as Hasar and her lover, Renia, are). Sartaq, a rukhin rider and one of the princes, is another main side character. He spends most of the book with Nesryn in the mountains. I liked his character, he had a healthy dose of protective, relaxed, and funny rolled into one. I also liked the concept of his family in the palace being different than his hearth-family, or the family he has with the riders, and that the latter is far more relaxed and less vicious than the other. Sartaq wants to fly north, wants to do the right thing, but he also doesn’t want to go into it blind, which is part of the reason they end up seeking the Stygian Spiders to begin with. He’s definitely one of my favorite side characters in this book. That being said, it’s also pretty obvious that he’s mostly around to serve as a new love interest for Nesryn and to introduce the world of the rukhin riders…which is fine, but it would’ve been nice if he’d had a little more of his own development in the book. Hafiza is the Healer on High for the Torre, and she’s essentially Yrene’s adoptive mother. She teaches Yrene and helps guide her, but she also loves Yrene and genuinely wants her to succeed and stay safe. Like a mother, she even expresses disappointment when she feels Yrene is going against something she feels would strengthen Yrene. She was another funny character with a pretty dry sense of humor that I can definitely appreciate. I can’t entirely remember, but I hope we get to see more of her in KoA. Other side characters include Shen, a guard who lost part of his arm and had to have it replaced and is one of Chaol’s catalysts that makes him realize that if his wheelchair is a prison, then it’s a self-imposed one. The Khagan is someone we don’t see a lot of but holds a shit ton of sway over everything. Arghun is one of the princes and definitely the worst of the siblings, and he has no qualms undermining Chaol, Nesryn, and even Yrene at every turn. Kashin, who has already been mentioned, is really the one who gets Yrene researching, as he thinks there are already Valg in the Southern Continent. Below Sartaq, he’s my favorite prince simply because he’s open to what Chaol and Nesryn are saying, and he remains respectful to Yrene despite her rejection of him. Duva, is the now-youngest princess and doesn’t get a lot of page-time, but seems sweet enough. And then there’s Falkan, a shapeshifter from the northern continent who lost 20 years of his life to the Stygian Spiders. If he sounds familiar, he should, Celaena met him in Blade as well. In terms of the romance in the book….umm. When a character like Yrene, who hates Adarlan and Adarlanians, is going to end up with a character like Chaol, who is not only Adarlanian but an Adarlanian lord and ex-Captain of the Guard, there needs to be more build-up. They’re cute and sweet together, but the two (??) months that they got to know each other were not enough to overcome all of that enough to start a romance, in my opinion. It probably would’ve been better for them to get together in KoA, following a similar timeline to Celaena and Chaol, or even Aelin and Rowan. I like them together, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t think it should’ve happened in this book. Nesryn and Sartaq make more sense to me, especially since they had a more obvious chemistry between the two of them. They complement each other really well in terms of attitude and respect for one another’s abilities—it will never not be funny to me when Nesryn blocks Sartaq from doing something and he gives her ‘an incredulous face’ or whatever. Despite their chemistry and the fact they liked each other, even if not romantically, from the get-go, Nesryn suggested they survive the war first and then see what happens. Obviously they’re going to get together, but at least the pretense of waiting a little longer is there….even if this is the couple I wanted to see formalize it in this book. Overall, good plot, characters, and world-building. The romance leaves something to be desired, but I think the rest of what happens and is revealed in the book more than make up for it…especially what’s revealed. The heartbreaking end chapter I could’ve done without, mostly because I had to then wait a year for KoA, but whatever.

This busy week started off with some great filming news; Someone walked thru the set and saw Gillian Anderson reading her script... (X) We got a video of Brick from the make-up trailer! And a picture of Brick from the same trailer.
And then, it happened. THE PICTURE of MULDER AND SCULLY IN BED, CUDDLING!!!! According to the new BTS video... The screenshot is not the best, but we have one, at least. It is exactly what we would expect from CC. Mulder’s face is weird, Scully is completely under the sheet. Like literally not a single inch of skin can be seen. But her head is on Mulder’s shoulder and they are sharing a romantic moment. On a sofa. That’s all that we saw and of course, it went how it always goes...we had more questions than we had answers. One thing is for certain, tho. Many many people are gonna go after CC in a very violent way, in case this turns out to be another cheap trick... 😄😄😄 Anyhow, here are some theories and summaries:

Day 364: Saturday December 30, 2017 - “Christmas Honu”
Got up early for an excursion from all of the Cunningham Clan - a Christmas Present used to move a nice one to the Bucket List Boneyard. AC had done some research and got us hooked up with a 7:15am launch with a great company from Waianae in West Oahu. As the sun was just getting up over the mountains, our EO boat was hitting the calm waters.
Here is some of the go pro footage from this Bucket Listing Day.
We grooved North to Makua Beach area - also the area of the “LOST” Beach - the views were good as could be imagined, but we werent there for the sight seeing, we were here for the Dolphins! Our great crew explained that the Dolphins were functionally sleeping as nocturnal animals, but half their brain still functions - weird! We got the flippers on and got out into the water, and it wasnt long before our dolphin friends came up and swam with us. Spectacular way to start the day. We got back on the boat, and I was excited knowing what would come next and hopeful that itd work out.
We pulled into a relaxed bay with a good 30-40 feet of water and a nice reef with many bright colored fish, AND Sea Turtles. We swam with them in that beautiful warm blue water, snorkeling away, for a good half hour or more. Getting as close as just a few feet at one point. A bucket lister, kicked to the boneyard, one the penultimate day of 2017.
Ive long had an affinity and kinship for Sea Turtles, resonating with what these very Green Sea Turtles stood for in the old Hawaiian lore - navigators, good luck, sovereignty, and resilience, all themes that would tangle up together starting in 2010. That summer Id read the Old Man And The Sea for the first time, and got Papa’s take on the survivor from the time of Dinosaurs... later, an old poet friend, prepping me from my great Alaskan adventure gave me the sage advice of “being my own navigator” using the example of the sea turtles who set out and travel up to 800 miles away before returning back to the same exact spot on the same beach to lay their eggs - - no maps, no gps, no coach - just instinct and intuition. The seas only gift are those harsh blows. Armed with ancient survivors resilience, and intuitive navigation, the endangered green sea turtle has long been my re-invented psyche’s spirit animal; Ive such a heart too. These mantras and teachings and advice served me well in 2011 as the ship turned and I found myself....closing circles here, as I swam alongside one giant one with Audrie, Bucket List Boneyard #32. Before getting back to port we’d see some whales jump and spout out in the distance to give us all something to cheer about.
We’d take a break, but later follow the guides offering of advice and return back up to the Northwest Coastline, to the Lost Beach, for some good sun bathing and more snorkeling out here on our own. The water and sand perfect for one of our last afternoons in Hawaii. We’d hang the hammock and blow in the wind and eat sandwiches out of our picnic. We’d watch the sun go down into the horizon and wait for the first stars to come out around the full moon above the green valley behind us, before we’d wander our way out of the sand and back towards Honolulu. Over a poki bowl, Audrie sharded that this was her best day of the year, and I had reason to probably agree fully with her - it was a good one and a full one.

A COMPLETE LIST OF GREEK SKY GODS & GODDESSES
AEOLUS (Aiolos) The king of the winds. He was appointed by Zeus to guard the storm winds which he kept locked away inside the floating island of Aeolia, releasing them at the request of the gods to wreak their havoc.
AETHER (Aither) The primeval god of the shining light of the blue sky. He was conceived of as the substance of light, a layer of bright mist which lay between the dome of heaven and the lower air which surrounded the earth.
ANEMI (1) (Anemoi) The gods of the four directional winds and the heralds of the four seasons. Boreas the north wind was the lord of winter, Zephyros the west was the bringer of spring, Euros the east was the god of autumn, and Notos the south of summer.
ANEMOI (2) The Daemones of the violent storm-winds. They were sons of the monster Typhoeus kept locked away inside Tartarus or the floating island of Aeolus to be released only at the command of the gods.
ARCE (Arke) The messenger of the Titans. She was the sister of Iris and the goddess of the lost second rainbow. At the end of the Titan-war she was stripped of her wings and locked away inside the pit of Tartarus.
ASTRAEUS (Astraios) The Titan god of the stars. He was father of the planets and the four seasonal winds by Eos the dawn.
ASTRA PLANETI (Astra Planetoi) The gods of the five wandering-stars or planets. The leader of these was bright Eosphoros, the god of the dawn-star Venus. The other four were Pyroeis (star Mars), Phaenon (star Saturn), Phaethon (star Jupiter) and Stilbon (star Mercury).
ASTROTHESIAE (Astrothesiai) The spirits or living forms of the heavenly constellations. They were mostly heroes and creatures who were placed amongst the stars by the gods as reward for some service or, in a handful of cases, as a memorial of their crimes.
ATLAS A Titan condemned by Zeus to hold the sky aloft upon his shoulders and turn it upon its axis. Homer in the Odyssey seems to suggest that he was released from this labour and appointed keeper of the pillars of heaven, presumably the ones erected by Heracles at the ends of the earth.
AURA The Titan goddess of the breeze.
AURAE (Aurai) The nymphs of the breezes.
BOREAS The god of the north wind whose wintry breath brought the cold of winter. He dwelt in a cave in the mountains of the far northern land of Thrace.
CHAOS (Khaos) The primeval goddess of the gap between heaven and earth. She was the air which men breathed. Below Chaos her lay the flat body of the earth, and above the shining mists of the protogenos Aether. Chaos was the mother of Darkness and Night and of the birds.
CHIONE (Khione) The goddess of snow. She was daughter a daughter of Boreas, god of the wintry north wind.
CHRONOS The old god of time who turned the wheel of the heavenly constellations. He was sometimes equated with Cronus, the father of Zeus.
CYCLOPES (Kyklopes) Three giant sons of Uranus (Heaven) who forged the lightning and thunder of Zeus. Their three brothers, the Hecatoncheires, were the gods of violent storms.
EOS The winged goddess of the dawn. She heralded the rising of the sun with her rosy brilliance.
EOSPHORUS (Eosphoros) The god of the dawn-star (the star Venus) seen in the morning skies. He was originally regarded as being distinct from Hesperus, the god of the evening star.
EURUS (Euros) The god of the east wind and herald of the autumn season.
HARPYIAE (Harpyiai) Daemones of whirlwinds and storm gusts. They were known as the hounds of Zeus and blamed for the dissappearance of people without a trace.
HECATONCHEIRES (Hekatonkheires) Three hundred-armed, fifty-headed giants. They were the gods of violent storms which they released from the gates of Tartarus.
HELIUS (Helios) The god of the sun whose orb was he wore upon his head as a bright aureole crown. Helios drove a fiery chariot drawn by four winged steeds.
HEMERA The primeval goddess of the day. In the early morn she scattered the mists of her mother Nyx (Lady Night), to reveal the shining light of Aether, the blue sky.
HERA The Queen of Heaven and goddess of the air and starry constellations. The Milky Way was spilt from her breast and most of the other constellations placed in the heavens at her command.
HERSE The goddess of the morning dew.
HESPERIDES The goddesses of sunsets. The three Hesperides tended the tree of the golden apples on Erythea, the Red Isle, in the western stream of the river Oceanus. The apples were a wedding present from Gaea to the sky-gods Zeus and Hera. They were the source of the golden light of sunset, created to celebrate the nuptials of the sky-gods.
ASTRAPE (LIGHTNING)
HESPERUS (Hesperos) The god of the evening star (the planet Venus). He was originally distinct from his stellar counterpart Eosphorus, the dawn-star.
HORAE (1) (Horai) Three goddesses of the seasons and the ordering of time named Eirene, Eunomia and Dike. They directed the constellations and guiding the Sun in his heavenly course.
HORAE (2) (Horai) The goddesses of the twelve hours of the day. They were originally the same as the first three mentioned above.
HYADES Nymphs of the five stars of the constellation Hyades. They were daughters of the Titan Atlas. Their rising marked the start of the rainy month of spring.
IRIS The goddess of the rainbow. She was the divine messenger of the Olympian gods.
MENAE The nymphs of the fifty new moons of the Olympiad (a period of four years). Fifty moons were significant because this number marked the conjunction of solar and lunar calendars. The goddesses themselves were daughters of the moon-goddess Selene.
NEPHELAE (Nephelai) The nymphs of the clouds. They were daughters of the earth-encircling, river Oceanus from whose waters they drew the rain.
NOTUS (Notos) The god of the wet and stormy south wind who heralded the month of summer.
NYX The primeval goddess of night. In the evening Nyx drew her curtain of dark mists across the sky, cloaking the light of her son Aether, the shining blue sky. In the morn, her daughter Hemera (the goddess Day) lifted the dark mantle.
OCEANIDES (Okeanides)The daughters of the earth-encircling river Oceanus. Some of these were nymphs of clouds (Nephelae) and moistening breezes (Aurae).
OREITHYIA The goddess of cold, gusty mountain winds. She was the wife of Boreas, the wintry north wind, and the mother of Chione, snow.
PLEIADES The nymphs of the seven stars of the constellation Pleiades. They were daughters of the Titan Atlas whose rising and setting were of key importance in the agricultural calendar.
SELENE The goddess of the moon. She rode across the sky on the back of a bull, an ass, or in chariot drawn by winged horses. The moon itself was her crown or billowing veil.
URANUS (Ouranos) The primeval god whose body formed the solid dome of heaven. The Greeks imagined him as a bronze-bodied, star-spangled god whose hands rested upon the earth in the farthest east and feet in the farthest west. He was similar in form to the Egyptian goddess Nut whose starry arching form is common in art. Uranus was a eunuch god, having been castrated by Cronus at the beginning of time.
ZEPHRYUS (Zephyros) The god of the gentle west wind and the herald of spring. He was the husband of Chloris, the goddess of flowers, and the father of Carpus, fruits.
ZEUS The King of the Gods and the ruler of the heavens. He was the god of clouds, rain, thunder and lightning.
ZODIAC (Zodiakos) The spirits of the twelve constellations of the zodiac circled heaven measuring the seasons of the year.

Wildlife photographer Siddhardha Garige made this portrait of a Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) in St. Augustine, Florida using a Canon EOS 7D with a 100-400mm f/4-5.6 lens. The Florida resident writes, "The fall foliage in evening light provided a fantastic background for this egret in breeding plumage." Wildlife and nature photographer Sean Crane writes, "For an animal that is practically blind, Nine-banded Armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) can be difficult to photograph. They very rarely pick their faces up from the ground, and when they do it's because they smell a threat and then quickly run away. I knew that if I positioned myself upwind the armadillo would lift up for a second or two, catch my scent and run. I had to get on the ground quick, focus and shoot. I saw several armadillos on this particular day in Florida's Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, and used this method of shooting each time. This image was my favorite result." Florida resident Jessie Dickson photographed this young Florida Red-bellied Cooter (Pseudemys nelsoni) in Viera, Florida's Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands using a Nikon D80 with a 70-300mm lens.
Photographer Kathy Urbach writes about capturing this image of an American Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes fulvus) kit in Central Florida, "Arriving a dawn, we set up close enough to shoot with long lens and see the den opening and yet be far enough away not to disturb. On this particular day we had lots of activity. This kit wandered to the edge of the water for a drink and looked right at us ... such a treat to be so close to nature." Landscape photographer Daniel Ewert writes, "I walked into the bay at St. Joseph Peninsula State Park around midnight as the tide was going out. I set up my camera on a tripod facing the peninsula and took three 8-minute exposures in immediate succession to capture 24 minutes of star trails. This was one of the first times I was able to shoot a scene with star trails reflecting in the water." The Florida resident used a Canon EOS 5D Mark II with a 17-40mm f/4 lens. Photographer Valerie Begley made this Florida photograph of "a family of Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) searching for food while an American Bison (Bison bison) snoozes in the background" using a Canon EOS 50D with a 400mm lens.
Nature photographer David Seibel writes, "I noticed a number of Brown Pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) actively fishing along a beautiful stretch of beach on Florida's Gulf Coast and decided to try to capture them in flight during their dives. This trio gave me a terrific show shortly before sunset." The Kansas resident used a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV with a 500mm f/4 lens.
Underwater photographer David Fleetham captured this image of an "endangered Florida Manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) at Three Sisters Spring in Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge on an unusually cold day in January. The manatees seek out the springs for warm water." The Hawaii resident used a Canon EOS 5D Mark II with a 15mm fisheye lens in Ikelite underwater housing and dual strobes. Nature photographer Nancy Elwood writes, "I had my first opportunity to photograph an Eastern Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus virginianus) family from four weeks old to branching, in a nest that had been used for many years by this same pair of owls. In the beginning the adult female would spend a lot of time with the chicks, but as time went on she would leave them during the day. But she and the adult male were never far away, always staying close by to watch over their family." The Florida resident used a Nikon D300 with a 500mm f/4 lens.

Nature photographer Judd Patterson caught the moment a Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) grabbed a meal in Everglades National Park using a Canon 5D Mark II with a 500mm f/4 lens on a tripod. The Florida resident writes, "This heron was carefully stalking fish along the water's edge when, with a quick strike, the fish was caught and the heron swung the exotic Walking Catfish (Clarias batrachus) around for my camera to see before devouring it in one quick gulp."
Underwater photographer Steven Kovacs photographed this Yellowhead Jawfish (Opistognathus aurifrons) in Florida's Lake Worth Lagoon in Rivera Beach. He explains, "Jawfish are a species of fish where the male carries its eggs in its mouth until ready to hatch." The Florida resident used a Nikon D7000 with a 105mm lens in underwater housing with dual strobes.
Photographer Gema Saiz took this photo in Big Cypress National Preserve where this Great Egret (Ardea alba) "seemed to be posing for me," she writes. "It held its pose for an extended time allowing me to slow the shutter and capture the silky water." The Florida resident used a Canon EOS 5D Mark II with a 24-105mm f/4 lens.
Florida resident Elaine Kruer photographed this Robber Fly in her backyard habitat using a Canon EOS 60D with a 100mm f/4 macro lens. She writes about these beneficial bugs, "These mustache toting desperadoes are fast food connoisseurs, adept body snatchers, and accomplished alchemists. North American & Pelican Nebula - Wanted to go back and attempt some new palette options since I am using a duo-band filter with the L-eNhanced. I extracted Ha & Oiii channels in Astro Pixel Processor, and then used the Extract Ha-Oiii Mono option to give a luminance, or in this case, simulate a substitute for a Sii channel. I used the HOss blending method - assigning the Ha and Oiii extractions to the Red Channel, then the Ha-Oiii extraction to both the Green and Blue channels. This was all done in APP. I then processed the image in Photoshop. I like this palette option as it feels a bit more muted but can still be vibrant, while showing off a little more detail. . 45 x 240s (6-5-2021) 7 x 300s (6-6-2021) 20 x 360s (9-11-2021) 6 x 300s (6-21-2022) 800 ISO - Bortle 8 . As an astro-landscape photographer, one question I get asked all year long is, “What is the best time to see the Milky Way?”
Well, technically, the Milky Way galaxy, our galaxy, is something that you do see every night if you look up at the stars. (That is, if there’s no light pollution or clouds blocking your view!)

However, what most people refer to when they talk about the Milky Way visibility is, of course, the Milky Way core itself, the actual center of our galaxy. This beautiful, breathtaking band of stars is indeed only visible at night during certain times of the year.
Well, Milky Way “season” is approaching; in fact, it’s already upon us! So, here is a quick Milky Way viewing calendar, and a few tips for how and where to see the Milky Way best.

Best Places To See The Milky Way

Unfortunately, almost all of us live in an area with enough light pollution to completely drown out the Milky Way core. In fact, many of us are even lucky to be able to see any stars or planets at all!
So, obviously, to see the Milky Way best you must escape light pollution. Thankfully, you don’t have to just guess which places might have no light pollution. There are maps for that! Check out a website such as Dark Site Finder.
The Milky Way Core is only visible in the Southeast, South, and Southwest, (in the Northern Hemisphere) depending on the season.
Best Time To See The Milky Way

If the Milky Way core is not visible every single night of the year, when is it visible? The answer to this question is very simple, but there’s a catch, so pay attention:
I used to tell everybody that the Milky Way was visible in the spring, summer, and fall, but that’s because I live in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, indeed, seasons are opposite! So, when talking about when the Milky Way core is visible, we’ll talk about months, not seasons.
Starting in mid-February, the Milky Way core will rise just before sunrise. So you’ll have to either stay up all night or go to bed early and wake up at 3-4 AM!
By April, the Milky Way will rise at about midnight, and be visible in the sky for the rest of the night.
Then, in mid-June, the Milky Way will rise just after sunset, and will be visible all night long.
In July, the Milk Way will have already risen by the time it gets completely dark and it will set during the night.
Finally, from August until October, the Milky Way will still be very visible; however, it will set earlier and earlier each night, until in October when there will only be a very brief window of visibility before the Milky Way sets.
In November, December, and January, the Milky Way core will not be very visible at all. However, the outer band of the Milky Way galaxy will still be visible and does make a cool nightscape photography subject.

Last but not least, there are a few other considerations that will sound obvious when I mention them, but you’ll probably still need to remind yourself when planning your next (or first) big nightscape photography adventure:
Be aware of the Moon’s phase and location. If a full moon is shining, you can still see the Milky Way core, but just barely. If, however, the Moon is positioned inside the Milky Way (it changes position throughout each month), then all bets are off. Use apps like Sun Surveyor, PhotoPills, and The Photographer’s Ephemeris to match your Milky Way photography with a new, or waxing/waning crescent moon.
Be aware of the weather! Even the faintest amount of cloud cover can almost completely obscure the Milky Way in photos. Of course, you can’t plan for perfect weather months in advance when planning your future nightscape adventures, but just be ready. If possible, try and give yourself at least 2-3 different nights of potential opportunities to see the night sky. Nothing is worse than planning an adventure with only one good night to shoot the stars, and having that one night be cloudy.
Where Is The Milky Way?
Speaking of hemispheres, where in the sky can you see the Milky Way? This also depends on where in the world you are. In the Northern Hemisphere, the Milky Way will rise in the Southeast (the direction, not the place or the airline). Then, it will travel across the Southern sky and set in the Southwest.
In the Southern hemisphere, the Milky Way Core still rises in the Southeast and Sets in the Southwest. However, it does so at a totally different angle and travels in a very different path that arcs higher in the sky, crossing north instead of south. Again, you can use apps to find the Milky Way in the night sky, such as Sun Surveyor, PhotoPills, and The Photographer’s Ephemeris.

Best Destinations to Learn to Scuba Dive
With thousands of potential destinations, choosing where to learn to scuba dive can be a confusing process and something of a balancing act. On one hand, you’d like the best quality training. But on the other, you have a tight budget. You’d like simple diving to begin with, but yet you want to be prepared for diving elsewhere in potentially more challenging conditions. You’d like to see amazing marine life, but as a beginner you won’t have the skills yet to deal with the currents that often accompany large pelagic life. There is no one magical spot, but here are five of the world’s best destinations to learn to scuba dive, where you’ll find a bit of all the above.
Florida
With lots of reputable dive centers scattered around the Florida Keys, this is a great place to get started. Prices here are in the $500-600 range for an Open Water dive course. Most dive centers have modern, roomy purpose-built dive boats, and facilities are usually excellent. While you’re not as likely to see big pelagic life here as in some other parts of the world, lots of colorful reef fish and wrecks make for enjoyable dives. The training is likely to be thorough, friendly and professional.
There are many famous dive sites and wrecks along the Florida coast. As well as some excellent novice sites to hone your skills, legendary wrecks await for advanced divers like the Spiegel Grove. Visibility and temperature vary widely along the extensive Florida coastline, so for an accurate guide check with the dive center at your chosen location.
Best for: those wanting a professional service, high level of training, and a rich and varied dive experience.
Thailand
Thailand boasts many great diving destinations. With a steady flow of curious travelers, the island of Koh Tao reputedly certifies more new scuba divers than anywhere else in the world. Consequently, there are a myriad of competitive dive centers on the island offering courses from just $300 USD. The diving — while not the best Thailand has to offer — is still good. The water is 82 to 84 F (28 to 29 C) and usually clear. Colorful reef fish will compete for your attention, although beware the territorial triggerfish. There are around 16 to 20 dive sites scattered around the island. And, on lucky days at sites such as Sail Rock, you may find something larger passing by in the blue.
The super-competitive pricing means that dive centers often run courses speedily and with larger student to teacher ratios, so be sure to find a dive center and instructor you feel comfortable with. After you’ve completed your OW training, you can tie it in with an Advanced Open Water course on one of the liveaboard diving trips available on the west coast of Thailand from Khao Lak or Phuket.
Best for: travelers on a budget looking to have a good time in the water and then on land after they surface.
Red Sea, Egypt
The Red Sea is a great place to begin your journey into diving. Egypt stretches from the Suez Canal, which borders the Mediterranean Sea in the north, to Sudan on its southern border. Whether it’s Dahab’s stunning shore dives to the northeast or Hurghada or El Gouna further south, there is some great diving here for all levels. Here in the northern part of Africa, the water temperature can vary from 70 to 86 F (21 to 30 C), but it’s never cold. Visibility is often excellent with 40 to 60 feet (20 to 30 m) being the norm.
Even on beginner reefs, aquatic life is abundant. Wrasse, groupers, moray eels, blue-spotted rays, angelfish and butterflyfish add color to the stunning scene beneath the waves. On lucky days, divers may also witness some shark action. Although an Arabic-speaking country, training is available in many languages. Expect to pay approximately $300-400 for a three-day Open Water course depending on the area. There are lots of dive centers so carefully choose the center you feel comfortable with instead of using only the price as your guide.
Best for: good all-around destination for beginners and experienced divers alike. If you have a friend or partner who’s already certified this is a great place for them to join you. Lots of dive centers cater to all nationalities.
Scotland
If you want something different and are interested in maritime history, Scotland can be a great place to learn to dive. Although it may not immediately spring to mind when you think of scuba diving, Scotland is great for adventure seekers and budding wreck divers to take their first steps at Scapa Flow. The diving in Scotland is, by nature, more challenging than a tropical reef. You’ll learn how to dive in a drysuit, hood and gloves. But the reward is spending your first open-water dives on famous wrecks. Training standards are excellent; small ratios and attention to detail not always apparent in a tropical environment mean that you’ll be in safe hands. And, by taking those foundational steps in a more challenging environment, you’ll be ready for anything a tropical reef may throw at you.
The big draw of Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands is the history. A natural harbor for centuries — originally to the Viking fleet and then the British Navy — there are lots of wrecks to explore. Water temperature is usually in the 46 to 55F (8 to 12C) range. Visibility can be variable. The wrecks are covered in life: crabs and lobsters vie with wrasse and cod circling the wrecks’ perimeters. Brittle stars, turbot and scorpionfish often hide in the sand. On lucky occasions, a playful passing seal may even buzz by. At around $700 for a four-day Open Water course, this is one of the more expensive destinations to learn to scuba dive. However, the student-to-instructor ratios are excellent and the training is first-class.
Best for: adventure seekers, history lovers and those wanting a fun challenge who are unafraid of the colder water temperatures.
Australia
A vast country with incredible natural life above and below the waves, Australia is home to the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest reef system. Currently threatened by global warming, the Great Barrier Reef is a world heritage site and home to over 1,500 species of fish on approximately 2,900 individual reefs. You can choose from an abundance of dive-training centers, whether you favor PADI, SSI or NAUI. Most of the region’s quality dive centers utilize purpose-built pools for initial skill training in combination with air-conditioned classrooms. Qualifying dives are conducted via boat on the reef. Visibility can vary on the GBR due to the wind, tide, surf and surge. Average visibility runs from 60 to 75 feet (20 to 25m). Summer water temperatures can peak at 86 F (30 C) and never drop below 70 F (22 C).
Calm, sheltered, shallow areas around the islands are perfect for novices to practice skills, and gentle reef sites allow you to gather experience while enjoying rich fish life and corals. The marine diversity is fantastic, with some sites offering turtles, sharks, sea snakes, moray eels and a huge variety of reef fish. Prices can vary but, again, make sure the dive center is right for you rather than just booking the cheapest course on offer. Open Water Diver courses run from $700-800.
Best for: visiting a living legend – the Great Barrier Reef. A great place to learn with lots of professional centers along the vast coast and bountiful marine life.
