So I found out a fictional company name I have been using is actually the name of a real life company and I dunno where to go from here after reading your post about fictional company/corporation names. I've been trying to think of other names, but I'm drawing blanks. Any advice?
Fictional Company Has Real Company Name (Plus How/When to Change)
You may not even need to change it. The concern with using real businesses or names that belong to real companies/businesses is the potential for someone to confuse your fictional company with the real one and they lose business as a result. But if your fictional company or business couldn't be confused with the real one, it's probably not a concern. (Legal Disclaimer: I'm not an attorney of any kind, so nothing I say has any legal value. Just based on experience in the writing world...)
Let's say your fictional company is a well known (and evil) scientific megacorporation based in Madrid, but the real company with the same name is a small, obscure company that distributes photographic equipment in a small American city. No one is going to confuse your evil scientific megacorporation for a small company that distributes photographic equipment around Poughkeepsie, so they're extraordinarily unlikely to experience any negative impact from having the same name as the evil scientific corporation in your story.
But, if there's any way the real company could make the argument that they took a reputation hit and lost money because of confusion between them and your fictional company, it's better to change it just to be on the safe side. For example, it would be a bad idea to name your evil scientific corporation Adidas even if it's not a shoe and clothing company. Adidas is a big company and a very recognizable brand, so the risk of an issue is too big.
Start by looking for small changes to make. If the name that needs to be changed is "White Obelisk" change it to "Bright Obelisk." Let's say you were trying to use something like Adidas. The shoe and clothing company gets its name from the founder, Adolf "Adi" Dassler. His three-letter nickname combined with the first three letters of his surname. Perhaps you could do something similar. Let's say the founder of your fictional company is named Penelope Lawson. You could call it Penlaw, Penela, or Pela. Or, maybe you really like the sound of Adidas... how can you come up with something that has a similar sound? A is a vowel so how does it sound with other vowels? Edidas, Ididas, Odidas, Udidas. You could also try changing the "i" to another vowel: Adadas, Adedas, Adodas, Adudas. Or maybe try changing the "t" to a different consonant: Abibas, Agigas, Akikas, Atitas, Avivas, Azizas.
Let's say the name you wanted to use for your fictional financial company was "Belenus," which you chose after the Celtic sun god. But then you found out there's a real banking company with that name. Since banking is part of the financial industry, that's too close for comfort, so what are your options? First, have a look at other Celtic gods to see if one fits as an alternative. If not, try looking at the gods of other ancient cultures... just avoid using any from ancient cultures that are still being practiced today unless it's your culture. If that doesn't work, and if you're not attached to the ancient god association, try the name change trick used in the Adidas example.
Hopefully that will help get you on the right track!
