Besides, he doesn’t have to see Zay to know he’s there. That’s one difference between his escapist fantasies and the real world he doesn’t think his imagination could get strong enough to fake. He’s always been attuned to him, like they’re tied together by some trip wire, and any time they share space his senses become sharper and the air gets thinner. Before, in the early part of the year when everything was in shambles, it felt like a survival instinct—an early warning signal to get the hell out and avoid potential attack that he probably deserved, only dulled enough to fail when under the influence. Even before that, even as far back as they’ve known each other, being in his presence seemed to set off something deep in his nervous system that he didn’t understand. Couldn’t understand, until he opened up enough to let in the truth.
Thin air, sweaty palms, racing heart. Zay’s here. Prepare for trouble.
It’s more than that, though, which he only learned once he let his guard down. When they got together and his world flipped upside down, that survival instinct became the way to survive. Not to run from, but to prioritize, to cherish and seek out every chance he had. Everything they shared was a secret, so he kept them a safe distance apart, but that intuition kept him going. They couldn’t stand together in lab unless specifically directed to do so, but he knew he was there, stealing glances during pas de deux or at the back of his head in Norton’s class. He could feel the reverberation of his steps on the stage during run throughs, the only ones perfectly in sync with his as they practiced complicated choreography. Bolstered by the private knowledge that if something were to happen, if for whatever reason he fell, Zay would be the first one there to catch him.
-- Zay & Charlie in sync, unreleased excerpt from a piece referenced while discussing “Pump It” in the opening of 103

Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Thoughts on 3.08.
Julie: Girl, it's objectively a terrible idea to take a child out to the place that Randall was afraid of, but it progressed the story, so as a member of the audience, I’m not mad at ya.
Henry & Jade: “Who the fuck are you?” I love that this show doesn’t forget who’s met who, and we get to see random introductions like this.
Victor, Sara, & Tabitha: It was nice to see Tabitha and Sara being calming and patient with Victor. It's also bittersweet, because it brings to mind how much poor Victor has been deprived of affection.
Jade: Glad he set that bottle aside. It now seems like more than a coincidence that Jade completely lost his shit it at the same time Tabitha disappeared, and that since he’s been spending time with her again, he’s decided to get it together. (Sure, in 3.01 he was bothered by seeing the freaky kids and the root symbol, but that was also the exact same time Tabitha disappeared.) Even though he never said it, I think Jade was majorly affected by the loss of the only other person who understood what he was going through.
Jim: Bro, you are trying to make it hard to like you. Last episode, I thought he was growing by not getting all possessive and flipping out on Jade. Turns out I gave him too much credit. He just saved it for later. – Though in my preferred headcanon where it ends in a throuple, Jim is actually pissed because he’s jealous that Tabitha is stealing Jade. Jim doesn’t know how to personally deal with being attracted to a man yet, so he’s taking it out on Jade.
Jade & Tabitha: I’m now convinced that Jade is falling hard for Tabitha. We’ve never seen Jade as angry as he was in response to Jim implying Tabitha wasn’t fully capable of making her own decisions. (Sure, part of it was Jim holding his collar, and the closest Jade has ever gotten to that angry was when Boyd dragged him away from the funeral or when Victor withheld info about the symbol. But neither time was this intense.) Jade was more angry about how Jim talked about Tabitha than when he was insulting Jade.
Jade’s hair: It looked so silky and soft this episode!

𝐍𝐎. 𝟗   ❛ 𝐝𝐨𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 ❜   |   THE DEN & LEONOR'S APARTMENT, MID MARCH 1991
❧  𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲  /  𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠  /  𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬  /  𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭.
❛  Outside the bar, a handful of photographers had greeted them upon their departure; stragglers who followed Leonor’s car across the city turned away only when they reached the private garage at Kore’s condominium. The car idled inside while Leonor implored her to have a sleepover. This idea struck her no sooner than as the driver shifted into park but, once it had, she was insistent. Tomorrow wasn’t a workday for Kore. Although a dedicated partier, she was responsible enough to build in a buffer of sorts. Leonor, meanwhile, couldn’t bear the possibility of the night ending. Riding home in an empty backseat, shuffling into a dark apartment, falling unceremoniously into bed … If Kore spent the night, the fun lived on. Even when they promptly crashed, it would be together. It would be only after at least an additional hour or two of aimless chatter and laughter—perhaps with vomiting or hair-braiding in between. Kore relented, and the car soon sped out of the garage and past the sole lingering observer.
❧ moving on, moving forward ! curious as to what y'all're noticing and thinking as we wrap things up ... additionally, family time soon :^) did anyone else forget leonor isn't an only child or just me—
𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐝 & 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭 ↓
They fell asleep as the sun rose, and Leonor awoke well into late morning with the slow, foggy realization that she was missing something. She stumbled out out of the bedroom and directly into Vita, who had been stationed nearby awaiting this very moment. Vita met Leonor’s alarm with reassurance. Having preternatural foresight, or likely just common sense, she anticipated the princess may have difficulties arriving on time for the day’s big obligation. So, she had made the necessary calls. Leonor nodded as if in a trance, attempting to wrap her mind around, not that it was handled, but that something immense loomed over her. The impossibility of it was splashed across her face as she returned to the bedroom—enough for Kore to notice and make an inquisitive expression in response. Leonor, slumping to the bathroom, waved it off as she passed her.
By the time they sat down for breakfast, rehashing the night’s escapades presented a welcome distraction. The sun was too bright on the balcony, but Leonor saw only the inescapable image of Mateo’s disappointed scowl when she closed her eyes. If she could laugh a little more with Kore before she departed—before she left the safety of her apartment to reenter her mother’s house, her own childhood home, where her brothers would be waiting—then she would put all of her focus on doing so.
Kore wanted to be serious, initially, however. It was understandable. Leonor nonetheless resisted the idea of analyzing her behavior and putting it some, any, kind of context. Her intention had been to shake off the oppressive languor, and she had succeeded. She said yes to Kore's invite and everything thereafter. If she had also wanted to be serious, she would have admitted what she told Renzo and acknowledged its explanatory power: nothing mattered anymore. It was easy to agree to every proposition if the consequences were immaterial. It wasn't a conscious declaration, but it was a visceral feeling blooming inside of her. Leonor had stepped out of the mourning period and into free-fall. If there was ground to hit, she couldn’t see it. She couldn’t feel it. It wasn’t that it didn’t exist; it did, but the threat of impact didn’t inspire anything in her. Once, it would have terrified.
In this new reality, whether permanent or transitory, indifference was the baseline to which she returned. She dreaded facing her brothers amid their mother’s belongings because it would replace the emptiness with something more durable than last night’s euphoria had been. She grinned and chuckled with Kore now, remembering the night with fondness, but those feelings were fading already. Her apathy receded only to flood in anew. Later, in the aftermath, the grief would sneak up on her. It would cast a shadow as she held items imbued with memories in her hands, promising to curl and crest and crash. When it did crash over her, it would be, not while she was in the house alongside Mateo and Gil, but when she was alone again. It would be expected but unpredictable. It would be familiar yet somehow, as had been the case for weeks, feel so raw as to be entirely new. Then, it would be over, and she would be left beached and inert while life carried on around her.
Leonor comforted herself as she dressed for the day with a rosier pronouncement of the future: Renzo’s hideaway wasn’t a dream, and she could retreat there in search of a jolt of excitement anytime she liked.
TRANSCRIPT:
LEONOR | It’s not like that, Kore. KORE | Lying through your teeth! Maybe for someone else— LEONOR | That’s so unfair.
KORE | [Laughs] Don’t even dispute it. Whoever that was last night, I’ve never met her before. Doesn’t mean I didn’t like her! I did. I wouldn’t mind seeing her again. However—
LEONOR | I can’t explain it. It’s cliche. I just—possibly for the first time ever—didn’t think too much about what I was doing and had fun.
KORE | Good euphemism for fucking a stranger in a public bathroom— LEONOR | I wasn’t talking about just that, but— [Both laugh]
KORE | Seriously, though. I mean it. I wasn’t trying to play matchmaker. That wouldn’t be good for you right now, especially so soon after how things ended with—
LEONOR | [Groans] Will you listen to me? That wasn’t even the highlight of the night. I thought you’d be proud.
KORE | [Chuckles] It’s just hard to believe, that’s all. You’re not unfun, but you definitely aren’t, you know, easygoing. LEONOR | I know. It was like a dream. But you know what? KORE | Hm?
LEONOR | You better get used to it. I’m changed. Different now.
KORE | [Laughs] Oh, someone had too much fun! Whoever dragged you out of your depression den deserves something nice for her efforts—maybe a roomful of roses or a new watch!
LEONOR | Not a matchmaker, she says, and yet …
KORE | I now pronounce you Princess Nora and Princess Nora’s New Favorite Hangout Spot. LEONOR | Ripped from tomorrow’s headlines, I’m sure. KORE | The nice ones. [Leonor scoffs]
LEONOR | [Sighs] … I should leave. KORE | You’re already late—at least eat your breakfast.
LEONOR | I did. KORE | You pushed it around the plate. Take some fruit to go? LEONOR | I’ll see you later this week. Thanks for staying with me last night. Hang out as long as you like, okay?
KORE | I hope it goes well. Give the boys my best wishes.

on my stranger things bullshit again anyway
Holly being a major character this time???? I’ve got SO many things to say about that. Because she’s been foreshadowed to understand more than she’s letting on this ENTIRE TIME. Like I’ve seen no one talk about this but Holly def knows more than she’s letting on. And we’ve been shown that for so long. Look at season three episode seven “The Bite” around 2:50. When the other Wheelers are on the Ferris wheel Holly sees the trees moving, (the mindflayer) and comments on it. Like!!!! She has been in so many background scenes commenting to Karen about things from the upside down. And in season one she is the first one to see the “messages” from Will and the pressing on the wall. Will and Holly are TOTALLY connected. I was genuinely confused when she didn’t get a bigger role in season four but now it makes sense.
Will is what started the series but Holly will end it. And the Duffers legit said that they were paralleling season one (going back to those groups) so wouldn’t it make sense for ANOTHER CHILD CONNECTED TO MIKE WHEELER (who has been intimately connected to the plot each season I feel like) to go missing??? This is the WHEELERS season and no one can convince me otherwise. It’s all about learning that it’s good to be different. It’s about the WHEELER family learning that.
and it helps Karen get involved! Because in all the scenes Holly shows Karen something she could’ve just seen it herself. Holly was, objectively, a character that didn’t have to exist before now. But she does BECAUSE SHE IS CONNECTED TO THE UPSIDE DOWN. My guess is that she is heavily paralleled to Will this season (the title of chapter two one of the biggest examples) and is going to be the main catalyst and I for one am HERE FOR IT.
Will is the main character this season but the Wheelers are the ones who create the plot.
in general the Wheelers have always seemed to be huge. When the Cali gang gets back it would make sense for El to be at the front, correct? Or will? But no, Mike the one “leading the charge” it looks like. He really is the heart. When his sister goes missing?? Oh it’s over for Vecna.
also manifesting a scene after Holly goes missing for Mike to have a mental breakdown about the similarities to when Will was missing and Wills like so confused??? Like Dustin and Lucas see it too and they tell Will about how insane he went and Wills just. Shocked.
also manifesting a scene for the party (or everyone) where they find out what happened at the quarry with Troy in season one bc that was so built up? (Scene where hopper says that for someone to jump off was a death sentence) and then NOTHING happened and I need it to be addressed. Like maybe something similar happens and Dustin comments on it, and everyone finds out?? Just in general I can see how losing his younger sister could lead to Mike nearly committing suicide (that boy is SO depressed, Jesus) also I know this probably actually means nothing but I’ve always thought Holly was getting a bigger role since I saw the episode title “Holly, Jolly” like idk? It always seemed so weird to me and I always thought “oh hollys going to get bigger” and she never did? Also idk the episode title is just plain weird. Like I understand it’s like a play on the Christmas lights and ironic cause no one is happy but what always gets me is the comma. Like I would’ve thought they would’ve named it “Holly Jolly” which in my opinion makes more sense and is more continuos. Plus it wouldn’t bring Holly to mind as much and wouldn’t foreshadow her being part of it. BUT MAYBE they are going to parallel that episode and I won’t be crazy but who knows even. This last paragraph is me ranting.
tl;dr Holly and the Wheelers have been foreshadowed since season one to play a bigger role and to be connected to the upside down and we’re gonna see it in st 5.
