"Russia will fall when Ukrainian sun rises" said the first President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, Dzhokhar Dudayev born on this day 79 years ago.
Ukraine became the first UN country to recognise the independence of Ichkeria on October 18 last year but the close relationship between the two peoples date back. There are stories of Ichkerians saving Ukrainian people from prosecution of the USSR government by hiding them in the mountains. Ukrainians were also one of the only nations to help Ichkerians in the two Chechen Wars waged by russia, reportedly operating one of the few tanks in disposal of the Ichkerian Armed Forced lead by Dudayev.
In 2014 after russia annexed Crimea and started active warfare in the East of Ukraine, the Free Caucasus organisation based in Denmark, where large numbers of Ichkerians have fled to after the Second Chechen War, formed the International Peacekeeping Battalion named after Dzhokhar Dudayev. Ichkerians have been at the frontlines of the russian-Ukrainian war ever since. From November 2022 they have been operating in Bakhmut, the deadliest battles now are happening there.

"Russism is a special form of misanthropic ideology, based on big-power chauvinism, full of spiritlessness and immorality. It differs from known forms of fascism, racism, and nationalism in its particular cruelty to both people and nature... Russism is more terrible than fascism, Nazism, racism — all misanthropic ideologies. Whether they want it or not. And this terrible disease can probably be cured only by the most difficult tests. Perhaps the only people on earth who do not believe in anything, are spiritless, immoral, and hopelessly and long behind the development of humanity are the Russians.” - Dzhokhar Dudayev

Nothing annoys me more recently than people using pictures from the Chechen Wars and calling it some kind of “warcore” aesthetics.
Like, this is internet aesthetics taken way too far. The Chechen Wars were one of the most brutal conflicts of the late 20th and early 21st century so far, and they basically led to a genocide of the Chechen people and burial of their hopes for independent Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, and people treat it like some kind of entertainment.
(Of course, using pictures, stories etc. from other wars for such purposes is equally wrong. I’m just mentioning the Chechen Wars here, because it seems like many people, especially ignorant Westerners, are using mostly pictures from this particular conflict for their “aesthetics”.)

My (in fact, not only mine) theory: look for the origins of Russian fascism in the reign of Boris Yeltsin. Claiming that everything started with Putin is too superficial, and to say that "Russians have imperialism in their blood" is a determinism that explains nothing. Now articles and reflections about the Chechen war have begun to appear more often, but not about Yeltsin's two presidential terms. But in vain!
Revanchism and hatred of the West are directly related to neo-liberal reforms - the very same "shock therapy". Neo-liberal reforms were designed not only by guys like Yegor Gaidar and Anatoly Chubais, but also by Western economists like Jeffrey Sachs. The Russian market was filled with Western goods - in times of mass unemployment, hyperinflation and banditry. The US and Western Europe got on very well with Russia. All this created fertile ground for the growth of feelings of resentment and the mood "Russia was handed over to the West for McDonald's." And yes, although Putin constantly contrasted his policies with the 90s, he is a direct consequence of Yeltsin's rule! Why? Because:
Anti-democracy. "Putinism" won in 1993 during the shooting of the White House, when the Yeltsin administration didn't want to compromise with the Congress of People's Deputies and the Supreme Council. Btw, the problem also concerned "shock therapy", which was opposed by the deputies, but Yeltsin's officials wanted to continue it. "Putinism" also won in 1996, when a some oligarchs backed Yeltsin for fear of losing illegally privatized property. Finally, "Putinism" won during the election of Putin himself, when he was chosen as "successor" by Yeltsin's daughter and her husband, as well as by the oligarch Boris Berezovsky. Putin seemed to be the most loyal to Yeltsin and also the guarantor of the preservation of the oligarchy.
Tolerance for violence. Of course, the Chechen wars played a major role here. Although, tbh, the Chechen separatists led by Dzhokhar Dudayev weren't "good guys" (however many people now think so), the federal government had the opportunity to resolve the conflict peacefully. But the Yeltsin administration was a supporter of the deployment of regular troops into Chechnya (read - the destruction of the city of Grozny, the flow of Chechen refugees, war crimes against the civilian population). Now, during the invasion of Ukraine, we see many episodes of cruelty that were in the Chechen wars: attempts to "take" the city by carpet bombing, shooting objects (cars, houses) with the inscriptions "children" and "people live here", etc.

As I said, here are some of the quotes of Dzhokhar Dudayev, the first president of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, taken from his various interviews and compiled with the help of his wife into a book "Лицар Свободи" ("The Knight of Freedom").
About the UN:
"The multi-volume UN resolutions lie on the shelves and are not implemented in relation to the nations. And since the day this organization was founded, we have not heard a single thing in defense of the Chechen people during the worst repressions. And in general, about all repressed peoples of the old regime"
About Budapest memorandum:
"Therefore, we need to turn to the UN to protect Ukraine, help it, protect it from sabotage. It’s better to let these nuclear weapons be in Ukraine than in Russia. They have absolutely no control over it there. If we come together with a common position and program, we can stop the nuclear disaster and the killing of peoples. The only thing we lack is unity"
About ruscism:
"To peoples of the former USSR I wish nothing. What they deserve, they themselves do. The peoples of the former, present, or future Union and, in particular, Russia, are sick of ruscism. And this is a very dangerous and serious chronic disease. Ruscism is scarier than all other misanthropic ideologies. And this terrible disease can probably be cured only by the most difficult tests. Russians are probably the only people on earth who do not believe in anything at all. Spiritless, immoral and hopelessly behind the level of human development. Not inclined to spirituality, and, accordingly, to morality. And this, unfortunately, on a massive scale. What is happening now... Chechnya is just an excuse. And at the root of it all lies the misanthropic ideology. And for this, you have to pay."
About peace between Ichkeria and Russia (compare it to Zelenskyy’s peace plan):
"But there can be peace between Chechnya and Russia only if these criminals are handed over to us. Either the world community will condemn them and bring them to justice, or they will hand them over to us. This is the first condition. The withdrawal of troops from the territory of the Republic, so that we can at least bury people, tally up the casualties and accounts - is also an indispensable condition. Another condition is the restoration of material and moral damages, once again inflicted on our people. And guarantees of the international community of security to the citizens of the Chechen Republic and its state integrity. Under these conditions, peace will come. Without them, we will fight to the last. Both Russia and Chechnya. Russia as a state will not be on our land. And it has no chance here. But we have"
The importance of NATO for the European security:
"In vain, the Russians think that now they will intimidate the world with their army, criminals, and nuclear weapons. Humanity can no longer be intimidated. Everyone has already been through that, everyone has gone through this hell of ruscism. Either Russia will disappear as a state, or it will have to turn to the world community. And for this, humanity must make efforts so that there are no blocs, no military confrontations in the world. Especially the Russian bloc. Only one bloc is needed - NATO, and it must be expanded. Let countries join a single military bloc to protect the interests of all peoples of the globe. And the weaker the people, the greater the protection should be. Then there will be calm and peace on Earth. It's time to kick Russia out of the UN. Humanity must protect itself from ruscism by putting itself in the shoes of the Chechens. In this way, they will protect themselves from future destruction"
One of the interviews given to Ukrainian journalists:
"How long will this war last?"
"This war will last fifty years. Perhaps there will be a temporary pause, but the war will continue. Its scale will expand, it will smolder for a long time, and the foci of smoldering will spread more widely. Probably, until Russia as a state does not disappear"
