All the Dynaco Speakers assembled in one big shot, just before I started selling them off. Yah. Two pairs of A10s, the original A25s, the A-35s, and the mighty A50s (which were amazing!). The little Allied 395 receiver was a short acquisition...not bad, for a sand amp. The Dynaco PAS3X on the top, along with the pair of ST70s monoblocked. Only one ST70 and the PAS remain.

Dynaco Renaissance.
Well sort of.
On a lap through the classified ads I found a clean looking but not functional Dynaco 400 amplifier for $400. That much for not working? Is this an indication of them becoming desirable? Not really, just a generation of audio people dying and things getting into estate sales. I should look into those.
Tumblr media
Back in the day I had this exact model I built from a kit. The guy wants $400 bucks for it but it needs major repair. By coincidence I have a full set of parts and pc boards for one of these. Those are spares for my Franken amp if it smoked. The only missing bits are the output transistors, and PS capacitors, I know where to get those. So I could fix it.
It has the right knobs and all the cosmetic bits which are often lost or damaged. The fundamental question is it worth fixing at that price?
It is prettier than a black box for sure. Oh and yes I would want to modify it to Franken status which disables the speaker protection and all that stuff. So strictly in the name of science I go looking for the value of these things fully operational and clean.
The prices on Ebay go from about $260 broken to $2500 CDN with the optional meters, (plus shipping). There are a couple near $600 claimed to be working perfectly. One is in Canada with only 50 bucks for shipping. So a working one for $650 all in. I take that to mean that $400 bucks needing a few hundred in parts and hours on the bench is too much money. The value of these as collectables is to leave them stock. The $2500 unit is with meters and is definitely collectable if that is your thing.
All these date from the early 1970s. The Dynacos were the equal of Crowns and better than Phase Linears according to the golden ears of the era. As is often the case people who have never heard them dislike them cuz they are old etc. This was also the era of Ampzilla and SAE who shared Mr James Bongiorno as the designer with Dynaco. Dynaco was first then SAE, then GAS (Ampzilla). They were good units.
Given the many kits of parts and upgrades and community support a lot of people share my good opinion of them. The base units all had a clever power limiting system that could be turned off, but is thought to degrade the sound a wee bit. The later 410 black boxes were stripped down to just the amplifier with no safety nets. My Franken-amp is from one of those. The mods I made were fairly brute force in the power supply with only capacitor tweaks in the amp circuit and the doubled up output transistors just like the 416. At its heart it is still a Dynaco 400. Well a Dynaco 416.
I can tell you with confidence mine is at least as good and in places better than my high end ARC Classic 60 tube amp dating from 1990. In twenty years the goal posts did not move very far if even at all. As far as I am concerned they still have not moved now in 2024.

Chase the ambience
Audio industry veteran and, at the time Chase Technologies CEO, Bob Rapoport invented the Chase Technologies HTS-1 ambience retriever which was marketed (around 1995) as a 5-channel full bandwidth surround sound system. I’ve acquired one from a local mastering engineer. It can be connected as a passive Hafler-type device, similar in circuitry to the Dynaco QD1 Series II (‘ambience generator’). In…

 Carver Black Magic 25
 Carver Black Magic 25
The Carver Black Magic 25 The amp runs cool, and provides a sound not as romantic as a vintage Mcintosh, Marantz or Dynaco amp, yet still delivers plenty of tubey, midrange magic that you’d expect. And of course, with only three input tubes, you can roll em’ if you’ve got em’ to fine tune and experiment. Thanks to careful design, this little jewel plays louder than you would expect a 25Wpc amp…

Ever get the feeling that you’re never all alone

by Bittersweet_in_Boston
“Whaddya mean, ‘something in your apartment?’” Nat looks at Bucky dubiously as she swirls her vodka tonic. Thankfully it’s early on a Wednesday at Dynaco so she doesn’t have to shout.
Bucky shrugs and takes a swig of his beer. “Just what I said, it feels like someone’s there, right behind me, and when I look around, there’s no one. It’s just me. But it’s weird.”
Nat’s perfect eyebrow raises as she sips her drink. “You sure it’s not all the drinking and partying you’re doing?” she comments.
“Fuck’s sake.” Bucky rolls his eyes, but underneath he’s smiling. Nat is his best friend and knows better than anyone that he hasn’t gone out for the last five days and rarely drinks more than a beer with dinner when he’s home alone.

Dynaco Repair Post No. 3
Friday Evening 12-15-23
Welp, no real physical progress to speak of today, although an interesting factoid caught my attention in researching all this and it may solve the PAS problem without much more intervention, if my thinking is correct.
On the PAS preamps, the diode kit does NOT replace the 12X4 Rectifier Tube! The diode kit on the PAS only provides the filament (LOW) voltage to the four 12AX7s. The 12X4 provides the HIGH voltage to the tubes! My 12X4 was not lit up on my test run!
So I found one on eBay for six bucks, and it will be here around the time the wafer switch arrives. Again, timing.
Tumblr media
And yes, I have decided to go much slower with things going forward. Too antsy to get it done leads to sloppy work and breaking things. Ya think I woulda figured it out by now....
At any rate, the cover and base are slipped back into place on the PAS, and it's set aside. I will be turning my attention to the ST70 in the interim.
BEHOLD THE BEAST:
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
"Bone Stock", just like I like 'em. And all original.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The dust and most of the corrosion will polish off the outside without much hassle. And rummaging through my bin of Dynaco parts, I came across one of these that I ordered a number of years back as a "spare" ( I thought they were all gone)...and so I will be replacing the original can cap with a fresher, never-used now-older-stock can cap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Underneath, it's as clean as it gets, actually.
Tumblr media
And again, everything is original. The electolytics get replaced by literal miniatures of their former selves, and the selenium stack in the very center gets replaced via diode.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And yes, the original beige & brown cord is stiff with age. I found a new manufacture 2-wire non-polarized cord, rated 10Amps, that I will clip the end off of and use.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
And with that, I'm going to end this one for tonight, and pick things back up tomorrow. I will probably decide to go with cleaning/polishing the top, front , and back of the chassis first, to get it out of the way. Plus, it's quite the big payoff, visually, once it's all shined-up to the tits and sparkling!
Tumblr media
While I didn't get much polishing done due to the crazy of the last couple days, I did manage to put the new power cord on.
Tumblr media
Wednesday evening, 12-20-23
Started this afternoon, and got the rectifier replaced with the diode, and did the swap-out of the bias-circuit components. Both went fairly smoothly, without much fuss.
First thing was to unsolder the two leads from the selenium stack:
Tumblr media
Replacing the long screw and stack with a shorter screw and two-lug terminal strip was easy enough, and the two leads were cooperative in going to their new lugs. Here's the diode and leads soldered in place:
Tumblr media
That done, I turned my attention to the bias circuit replacement. Here's the new parts, pre-install:
Tumblr media
After looking it over, I figured the best plan of attack was to leave the leads all soldered in place on the old lug strips, and then resolder onto the new lugs, one at a time, after I populate the new strip with the replacement parts.
Tumblr media
This was a little more challenging to get soldered, just because of the awkward size of the components and ensuring that there was at least a solid physical connection to solder. But things ended up going in fine, taking up a lot less room than the old parts:
Tumblr media
The next thing to do to the ST70 will be replacing the big quad can cap, and then it will be ready for tubes (which will hopefully be coming soon). I will tackle that in the morning. You can see the white spray of capacitor innards all over the corner of the PC board, as well as across the chassis on the other side. It will be the last piece of the puzzle, to get this replaced.
Tumblr media
One last note for tonight: the 12X4 didn't come today, for some reason. It's scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. If I get the can cap done in a reasonable amount of time, I'll start in on replacing the broken wafer switch.
Thursday evening, 12-21-23
After a few delays, I finally got to sit down and do some decent work on the Stereo 70. First order of business was ugly, but it had to be done: unsoldering all the leads that go to the quad can cap, and getting the thing out of the chassis. Using my 30-watt pencil made it go a little quicker; also clipped the leads on the two resistors to swing them up out of the way so I can get at the rest of this mess.
Tumblr media
Gaze into the abyss!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at all that dust and gunk! Time to put in a little elbow grease on the chrome.
Tumblr media
A stiff brush made quick work of most of the offending dust on the driver board, and I used it on the area around the transformers.
Tumblr media
And I found an easy solution for most of the gunk on the chrome, using a soft rag and some Meguiar's ScratchX scratch remover for auto paint. It was handy. It works! Now go back and look at how dirty it was after you gaze upon it after just an hour or so of going over it:
Tumblr media
And welp, it looks like I hit the photo limit again.
So now I go start Dynaco Repair Post No. 4!

Stuff.
I had an interesting exchange with PT the tube Guru about certain electronic components. I do not want to trigger them by mentioning the parts (weak humor attempt). I am still processing it.
I was following up on some more information about the transformer in my Franken-Amp in response to a question. I found the manual, and it gives a part number and that is it. Beyond that the jungle drums say it was made by Hammond (in Canada!?) and produced a rail voltage of 75V. She is huge and heavy.
Tumblr media
Image from the 'net.
And that is as far as I took it.
While looking around the files on my computer I found a pdf of an old (of course) 1974 issue of "Stereophile" magazine. I had to read through it. I grabbed it a couple years ago as it is a bit of a watershed issue. In it there is a review of the Dynaco ST400 Amp, the Dynaco Pat 5 preamp and two Audio Research products the D76 and SP3a.
In summary at the time of publication the very best solid state amplifier available was the ST400. The very best tube amplifier was the ARC D76. The very best Solid State Preamp was the PAT 5 and the corresponding tube unit was the ARC SP3a, but not better by much over the little Pat5.
The ST400 was better than the Crown DC300, The Phase Linear 400 and 700. The P-Ls do not surprise me, the DC300 is/was an impressive beast popular with rock bands.
Depending on your speakers and if you wanted to compensate for something or other in the bass or extreme highs Solid state was better than Glass or visa versa. Fun read especially when you know how the story ends, if it has even ended.
Since then the ARC units are classic, collectable, but not great by today's standards. If you want to buy "Class" then good on you. Both are flabby to lumpy in the Bass and quite soft but lovely in the highs. I heard them both back when I could hear the flyback transformers on a TV.
The Dynacos have gone through a cycle of "they are all crap" to they were OK, to approaching desirability in the used market. Typical price is $700 USD in a recent ad. It can be a lot less if repair is needed. No romance though.
The ARCs are silly pricey as "collectable". Recent SP3a's are listed over $3000 typically. That ARC Classic 60 is, oh the price is down to $2250. It is the grandson of the D76. A basket case wreck of a D75 was selling for over a grand as first, needed a few grand in repairs if even possible, but yes there is that romance.
The ST400 is the daddy (uncle?) of my Franken-Amp. So take a ST400, strip out all the protection circuits and hot rod the living crap out of it and you have my beast. There is no Hardness in the treble and there is no cross talk in the stereo image. So by the late 70s even to the 80s it is at SOTA level. Ha there you have it.
When I actually fire the beast up I am happy with it. I gotta occasionally remind myself of that. I have to take a pill or maybe a scotch to suppress the tweak head in me. It comes in waves.
Remember everyone there is no best, just what you like. The goal is what you hear, not what you use to hear it. Really I mean it.
Good morning / evening to all, especially you PT.

How to Restore a Dynaco ST 150 Audio Amplifier
How to Restore a Dynaco ST 150 Audio Amplifier
Restoring a Dynaco ST 150 Stereo Amplifier Universal Tiger Amplifier Lately, I’ve been restoring a Dynaco ST 150 stereo amplifier. As my collection of classic vinyl grows, I’ve assembled a decent 1970’s playback system. Coming of age in the mid-70’s, I coveted a new high-power solid state amplifier. I read Popular Electronics issues (e.g. Oct., 1970) with interest, especially the articles that…
